The song is the ending of an emotionally complex album of the same name, in the album, J Cole raps in the perspective of a dead friend of his, speaking on behalf of him, and telling his story. His story is a heartbreaking one as while he follows the same cycle other black men go through in certain places, he meets a woman who changes his perspective on his life, eventually he wants to change for the better, but his past life catches up to him and he dies shortly after his daughter is born. In the end, the entire album is meant for that daughter, who now gets to know who her father was as a man. The record is beautiful and written extremely well, J Cole’s best in my opinion🙏
Loved it, didn’t know what to expect coming into this but your thoughts and perspective on this song and its message were pleasantly surprising. He’s my favorite living artist so if you want some more J Cole songs to review I’ll gladly assist there or maybe even some other similar tracks and artist that you can explore as well
By all means.
