    This season finally put Mr. Peanutbutter on blast about how his devil-may-care attitude can be just as toxic, negative and dangerous as Bojacks nihilism and addiction to dysfunction.

    • @zvexevz
      @zvexevz 5 лет назад +145

      Just as toxic? I think not. That would be to let Bojack, and guys like him in real life, off the hook somewhat. Their behaviour hurts and scars people in ways that Mr. Peanutbutter's doesn't. But what they did do, and very well, is show how the so-called "positive attitude" that many choose to adopt in our culture, can also be hurtful to others, and how it also represents a position of extreme self-deception. In an era where everyone and their dog (literally so in many cases) is exhorting people to be positive no matter what, as if this absolves them of any moral responsibility towards themselves or others. In this case, Mr. Pb's positivity in the face of everything leads to him living a lie and marrying someone he doesn't love. Something that will cause Pickles untold emotional distress when the truth comes out. But that's not on the same scale as the physical and emotional trauma Bojack caused Gina when he assaulted her.

      It's the antithesis of the network animated comedies' time warp approach. They keep characters basically frozen for 10 or 20 or 30 years without much actual, enduring change. BoJack doesn't have episode resets or multiple-choice pasts; it just has accumulation

      It is beautiful! I’ve only just watched Bojack for the first time, and before I started I watched the walking dead. The walking dead is exciting and suspenseful, but exactly what you said here - that the show makers changed and that’s why the show changes - didn’t happen with the walking dead. It really started to drag in the later seasons and I had to stop and start a new show. That was Bojack. And Bojack horseman is worlds apart from the walking dead. The walking dead is just an exciting show with lots of action, but Bojack horseman is so incredibly deep and wise. And you’re right, it changes, which is so beautiful. Now, I’m finishing the walking dead and it’s mildly entertaining, but I really really miss watching Bojack horseman.

    Maybe the reason why BoJack is so unhappy is partly because he doesn't really know who he is. Instead his sense of identity is always tied to whatever he's starred in, and what other people think of him. It's all external sources. And as we all know, a true sense of self-worth has to come from within. Instead he keeps trying to find it elsewhere, and it's not working.

The way the show is able to create such a genuine world that shows depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and countless other legitimate struggles faced in the real world never fails to amaze me. Whenever I'm having a bad time I watch bojack, by the time I get to season 5 I always end up super emotionally invested in bojacks growth because I know everything that happened with him and know he can be a good person just like how I want to see myself. This final time I decided it was time to change myself just like bojack. I phoned my doctor, got prescribed antidepressants and I'm going to start seeing a therapist. Bojack let's me think about things and see life in a better light. I keep being brought back to the view from halfway down. I think it eludes to so much more than it’s saying. One, we often make rash decisions and realize it’s a mistake, but we’re already halfway down. I also see it as if your entire life is falling down. Only until you realize the reality of things are you able to see the beauty in life. You need to see the first half of ugliness to notice how good the view is from halfway down, and it would’ve been more beautiful higher up but you can’t go up, all that time was wasted. In order to see the good and amazing things in life you have to open your eyes before it’s too late because life only last so long; We’re all going to die. So enjoy the view from halfway down.

As an artist, I don't owe the public an explanation of my work; they can either take it or leave it, the audience is not automatically entitled to an interpretation. In Season 2, Diane tries to get people to come forward over a network star and received death threats for it. Bojack and Peanutbutter both tried to get her to stop for different reasons, but the show never made fun of her or saw her in the wrong for wanting to do what she did, even if it didn't have the outcome we wanted. And that unfortunately happens in real life.

    Your obsession with Bojack Horseman has lead me to try (to really try) to get through the show. But I'm not done season 1 yet, and honestly I'm bored 90% of the time. And I like all the talent involved. It's just not engaging. I think your appreciation for it will have to remain a mystery to me.

      WalterLiddy honestly its takes season 1 to reach its stride and its much more engaging after that

    Did anybody else not like the Henry Fondle arc at all? Like to me it was lazy and out of place for this season. I didn’t understand it until it was made head of the company. And the entire arc of Todd being the head of a silly company didn’t make any sense to me at all. I cringed at that arc. If it was meant to be social commentary then it just fell flat for me.

      It fell flat to me too. (No joke intended). I found myself skipping Todd's scenes to avoid his and the stupid robot plot.

    I had such mixed feelings about season 5 - it was an insightful parable about how perspective can distort your view of the world (in just the ways you described), which is an impressive outcome, surely. But it felt like it sacrificed all heart and comedy to do so; the show used to be maybe 3/4 funny and 1/4 insightful/preachy, which I thought was a perfect combination. This mixture varied at times, but it was still always a story first and an allegory second. Season 5 couldn't help feeling like lecture/parable/allegory only with no focus on story or humor anymore. I think "overbearing" is the word I had in mind while watching. I still liked it, but it was the first season I want to describe as overbearing.
