Honestly, the very end of Sarah Lynn's final episode, when Bojack goes "Sarah Lynn. Sarah Lynn?" Is the single most memorable line of television I have ever heard.
I was more horrified that there was no "SARAH LYNN!" moment. Really showing how detached bowjack was in this moment. ruclips.net/video/fgDzzDvNuLY/видео.htmlsi=rBI72wIDRdAm-IUU
I didn't think Sarah Lynn's death could be any more tragic, but your break down doesn't miss a single crack. I did not catch the "bear fur" comment nor did I realize her step-father was one. Her last words were already haunting, because they're so childlike and innocent. It's like what a kid would say when you ask the "What do you want to be when you grow up?" but she never had that option.
I feel like it's even more poignant to realise that her last words are the exact answer to this question, it encapsulates everything about Sarah Lynn's life: how she didn't get to do what she wanted, how she never had a proper childhood and how she never actually grew up.
not to mention how her manager was her stepfather and also her manager leaked her nudes to gain more popularity for her , and also he was a photographer . it all adds up horribly .
Haunting fact about the Ophelia painting: the model who posed for the original version of this painting was lying in a cold bath tub for hours so the artist could paint her, never complaining because she needed the money to support her family. By the time she got out of the bathtub she was extremely sick, and her doctor prescribed laudanum (basically opium) so she could cope with the pain. She became addicted to the opium, lived a terrible life because her husband was shit, and then she died young because of an opium overdose. The model’s life and Sarah Lyn’s are like mirrors to each other, both being forced to do something that led to drug addiction and death, whoever thought to put that painting in Sarah Lyn’s room must’ve been an art historian and a genius.

This is what writers always get wrong. You generalize the “killing off of a character just to get rid of them” too much. Death happens at random and suddenly it doesn’t always need deep meaning. It should do something for the story or characters in a way, but you shouldn’t always be making a character that has to be killed off only to impact a character in a specific way. My bestselling novel series has gotten good reviews and responses to the very real form of death shown.
@@CeCeHoran22 I wouldn't say I was dissapointed. While I very much expected and wanted to see them tackle Beatrice's death, I do believe that Sarah Lynn's death was more important as far as the effect they had on Bojack in comparison to his mother's death.
There's a lot of talk lately about "Subverting expectations" and "Creating twists that the audience can't see coming" lately and I'm glad that you pointed out how it's completely possible to have a meaningful impact on the audience while still staying firmly within expectations and that a writer doesn't need to rely on twists to shock us. I remember there was a point in the episode where Bojack is pouring his heart out to Sarah Lynn and she's laying very quiet and still on the bed and I thought "Oh, she must have ODed" Only for her to wake up a few seconds later and say she's bored. They telegraphed how very possible and probable it was that Sarah Lynn would die minutes before it actually happened and yet I still stared at the screen completely blown away with shock and sorrow when it happened in the exact way I thought it would.
I think a nice example for character death and subverting expectations was Mami Tomoe from Madoka Magica. Viewers went into the show thinking they'll see a cutesy magical girl-anime thanks to the art style and well, because magical girl-animes are harmless by default. However, there were a few early hints that implied otherwise: The antagonists of the show had an unusually nightmarish design, mentions of suicide and Mami herself urged Madoka to really consider if she wants to become a magical girl, because it's not as easy as it looks. Then she got her head chomped off by one of the monsters she was fighting. And the tone of the series shifted dramatically from there. The girls who witnessed it were pretty much traumatized and immediately abandoned their idea of picking up her lifestyle. The world itself suddenly seemed more bleak and hopeless, and even if you had a glimmer of hope at some point, it was snuffed out almost immediately. But what really sets this apart from other "shock moments" is that Mami is still being treated with respect afterwards. She wasn't a nameless girl who was killed off for shock value and shifting the tone. It's later established how she was one of the very few altruistic girls in this "profession", she became a role model for one of the characters and characters still talk about her long after she died. We even get some additional character development for her later on in the form of flashbacks.
Why is it every video you make on this show only makes the show even better rewatching it? And why is Bojack Horseman such an incredible show? God, it's just such an amazing sitcom.
Sarah Lynn's death on this show was probably the saddest episode of this entire series and the fact that they did it early on to haunt BoJack thru the later seasons makes it even more sad.
Sarah Lynn's death was so devastating. When BoJack and Wanda start dating, Kelsey Jannings tells Diane that every celebrity has an age of stagnation. They stop growing once they've hit a certain level of fame. For Sarah Lynn, that age was when she was a child. She didn't progress emotionally or in maturity past whatever very young age it was when she made it big on Horsing Around. Following the downfall of her fame, she was stuck in a perpetual state of childhood, using drugs and alcohol to keep afloat because she most likely wasn't able to come to terms with why she stopped being successful. Mentally she was forever that little kid in the dressing room who wanted to be an architect, which makes her death all the more sad. She never got a chance to grow up as she should have. I feel like this makes her story relatable not only to anyone who feels trapped in the entertainment industry, but to victims of childhood abuse who also didn't get to grow up properly and are stuck trying to fulfill a childhood they never had. Sarah Lynn's death was a kick to the stomach because she will never get the chance to be better. There was hope at the end of the episode just before she died and now there's nothing. It was flawlessly done but incredibly painful and unfair.
The saddest thing about Sarah Lynn's death is that literally everybody knew it was coming, including Sarah Lynn herself. She laid out her own fate in the episode she was introduced in.
What is even more beautiful is that Holst's Venus from the planet suites is played during her death scene. Venus is a very turbulent planet as it regularly rains acid on its surface. But beyond its toxicity, it has always been depicted as the greek goddess of beauty and feminity. Perhaps, before her death, Sarah Lynn managed to overcome her toxic nature, and finally reach that level of serenity.
Venus: The Bringer of Peace. I'd want to argue that it was simply chosen because it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever but also I think you're right. It's about peace and beauty.

I'm only 7:32 in, but it seems like you missed the line from season 1 where Sarah Lynn says it's too late for her, and one day she'll die tragically young. Like she predicts her own death in season 1.
Honestly it'd make sense if he drowned - there's a lot of allusion to him drowning literally, more than just in the opening. Ofc it could be metaphorical, who knows
Agreed, apart from the whole grosses of someone dying as a way of escape (which I think the writers are aware of the optics of that) bojack isn't a show about having someone who harms others and seeing no way around it other then a quick conclusion. It's about coming to accept that there is no fixing the harm you've done. Just acknowledgment of it and finding a way of making sure it never happens again. Bojack dying doesn't really feel like a meaningful way to convey that
Now that the show is over, there should be another video about death and the penultimate Bojack episode. That episode was a masterpiece and it was harrowing.
I got spoiled about Sarah Lynns death by reading the bio looking for the episode i left off from but It was kinda sad seeing that I knew her death was coming and I was expecting it but I just didnt wanna see it happened still.

Amazing job and worth the wait! Ive been rewatching Bojack and im about mid season 4. Sarah Lynn's death rocked me to my core the first time, but I did expect it. Upon the recent rewatch though, what had caused the impact is the flashback to Bojack seeing her after her concert to pitch her the Bojack Horseman Show. That ended so terribly between them that the next time they see each other is when she shows up in season 1. With everything you've talked about and with season 5 being hailed as the best meta commentary of the show, i wish someone would talk about how they did meta commentary in season3, they just didn't make everything in the season tied to it, just a few characters. But that meta commentary is what makes you realize that she wasn't gonna magically come back when she finally dies.
My first ‘in your face’ clue was when BoJack and Diane went to get the BoJack drug and the graffiti just said “BoJack kills” I was pretty sure she was dead, that he was going to push her and she would overdose. Ophelia definitely confirmed the episode.
I’ve always found the way that the night sky was used not only in the title sequence but when Bojack looked at the vodka so haunting. It’s like the tiny part of his brain that was sober that night will never let him forget that he killed his co-star, his lover, his friend, his daughter. It seems like for a moment he understands that it wasn’t anyone’s fault but his that Sarah Lynn died.
Gosh I saw the pictures of the old man alone after his wife died in Up and immediately started tearing up. The first time I saw this movie I was too young to understand. But I rewatched the movie recently and that scene I didn’t even remember was simply so crushingly sad.
I added in a spoiler warning card at the beginning of the video to help out. Very sorry everyone! Also, thanks to Karol Chruzik for locating the source to the art at 6:14! In my tangled series fics, the death of my oc's father is two fold like Sara lyns. The dad died way before the father did. My oc, Erica, now has to explore why she still feels horrible about it even though in his final moments? He was actively trying to kill someone. She's noticably absent for his death representing how far he's fallen as a parental figure. He went from being her dad to being a total stranger and one that haunts Erica as she's still alive.

And just like in the photo he stood there watching her die at an arm’s length distance. Going so far as to leave her alone while she overdosed in the planetarium and wait to call the police.
I'm only 7:32 in, but it seems like you missed the line from season 1 where Sarah Lynn says it's too late for her, and one day she'll die tragically young. Like she predicts her own death in season 1.
You're quickly becoming my favourite youtuber. I cried listening to this, thank you for making this video.
Well thanks for revealing the endings to several shows I was thinking of watching without any warning. Mainly death note.
Man, you're amazing. This is some of the best content I've ever found on RUclips.
Omg if they did a live action of Bojack, Lindsay Lohan should totally play Sarah Lynn!!
Came in not knowing what to expect (since I didn't know your channel), left impressed. Keep on going, mate!
This video’s a spoiler Lamborghini.
I think my uncle drives one of those.
she just wanted to be an architect
i feel like the show will end with bojack dying
Honestly it'd make sense if he drowned - there's a lot of allusion to him drowning literally, more than just in the opening. Ofc it could be metaphorical, who knows
No. They've gotten people so attached to Bojack. He's a symbol for a lot of things. It's almost irresponsible for him to die.
Bojack dying doesn't really feel like a meaningful way to convey that
nah, he can't escape himself.
@@zoedegenerate6703 Well this comment aged like fine wine
What a well articulated and insightful video. This video was the best 12 mins of my day. Thank you
Now that the show is over, there should be another video about death and the penultimate Bojack episode. That episode was a masterpiece and it was harrowing.
I love your videos. Thank you for the time, thought, and energy you put into creating them. 😊
I got spoiled about Sarah Lynns death by reading the bio looking for the episode i left off from but It was kinda sad seeing that I knew her death was coming and I was expecting it but I just didnt wanna see it happened still.
11:10 i think bojack has finally reached rock bottom in season 5
Nah, he can fall harder
the writers: "bet"
Well
Oh honey
6:17 ohhhhhh mannnn..... i was teary eyed but this really hit home........
Amazing amazing amazing video! Luckily a lot of these references you made I've decided not to watch, have seen already, or don't have an interest in watching (also I don't care about spoilers too much) but my goodness for others be a bit more careful with the spoilers especially with some of these stuff that are so recent like Hereditary and A Quiet Place. I feel like you were naming soo many examples when you're point would have been illustrated with just one or none at all even.
Finally, the episode I have been waiting for. Thank you, you beautiful-voiced man.
Even just the clips made me cry... I don't cry to tv and never to a cartoon, fucking props to these writers
this is such a well-thought out/worded analysis
"recency bias" (lion king was released 25 years ago)
You already shattered my heart at Violet Evergardens "Never coming back" at 0:00
Fantastic video man, this one made me tear up 😢
Beautiful video. Please keep up the great content
Gosh I saw the pictures of the old man alone after his wife died in Up and immediately started tearing up. The first time I saw this movie I was too young to understand. But I rewatched the movie recently and that scene I didn’t even remember was simply so crushingly sad.
"Never coming back" did me dirty, man.
Best video on the show I've ever seen
Beautifully constructed video, man.
I've never watched a single episode of bojack horseman why am I here amd why did I watch the whole thing
Just finished RDR2 and this applies so heavily
Her death was foreshadowed so much to the point where they even had a fake out within the episode.
It got me then she woke up and i was like oh
Your so underrated man these videos are very well made
"I'll just surround myself with sycophants and enablers until I die tragically young"
Now this is a good fuckin video
Holy shit this video has so many spoilers for unrelated media 🙃
Sarah Lynn's death saddened me, but this took it to the next level 😭
So glad i found your channel. thanks a lot
I added in a spoiler warning card at the beginning of the video to help out. Very sorry everyone!
Also, thanks to Karol Chruzik for locating the source to the art at 6:14! I couldn't find it for the life of me.

In season 1, she predicted her own death. "I'm at a place right now where I never need to grow as a person or rise to an occasion because I can constantly just surround myself with sycophants and enablers until I die tragically young. It's pretty much to late for me."
Oh my god i didn't pick up on that bear fur comment. She's one of those characters you just want to hug
I'm glad I've seen enough of this show to not be spoiled by the thumbnail.
huh, you changed it
Love your channel, keep on going!
You want a job as a professor bro?
God violets music playing in the back breaks my heart.
Great analysis. Looking forward to more 😄
Damn he wasnt kidding when he said Bojack could fall more
When u talked about ls death I thought u were gonna talk about n takes his mantle. Gave me a soft chuckle, whether intentional or not
the fact that you used a picture of joel to represent facing death not knowing that a year later he’d have one of the most controversial deaths in video game history
When he shows Joel: “you like golf ?”
*i hear the violet evergarden background music bro*
It's hilarious how even Voldemort seems horrified by Umbridge in that picture.
Watching this video after the latest James Bond movie hits in a whole new light.
I'm not crying... you're the one that's crying
3:30 The rehab centre is called Pastiches, rather than Promises, isn't it?
Coincidental spoilers for The Last of Us Part II
Great in-depth analysis!
