    Beezy said he would play Chaos Warp in “non-black” red decks. I think that Chaos Warp is still particularly relevant in rakdos decks because of the lack of enchantment removal.

    Fun little interaction with Imprisoned in the Moon and Song of the Dryads:
    If you put them on a non-land permanent and then use something like Vesuva to copy it, it comes in as a copy of the original permanent, so it can be a creature or planeswalker that can't be countered. Get you an Ugin, perhaps?

    I'd like to submit for consideration: Wellspring. Its effect -- 'sharing' a land -- seems innocuous enough, but then it provides a sacrifice target for your other lands and spells. It's so satisfying to send someone else's permanent to the graveyard when you're supposed to be paying the cost yourself.

    I play casualties of war in my hapatra and windgrace decks. It's always felt like a ton of value and been great. I'm a green mage who likes to ramp like a beast so while 6 is the top end of almost all my decks it's not untenable, especially in windgrace obviously. I will say that I play a suit of lower curve target removal along side it.

  • @kurtisyoung6739

    I can easily say that Casualties of War is a great card. Everytime I've played it, it does plenty of work and i never feel bad about the mana investment unless it's countered. Unlike decimate, you don't need all the targets to cast it, which makes it incredibly handy in all the situations where you really need it. I usually need to get rid of two problem permanents, and getting an enchantment and the best land, (and on rare occasion a planeswalker) is just gravy on top. Also, 1v1, it can often just win you the game.

    As someone who played decimate for quite a while in yidris, I don't think its as bad as you make it out to be. I'd say like ~70% of the time you wanted to cast it, you can. And when you do cast it, it feels really good, basically a casualties of war for four mana. Obviously, this starts the debate of is it worth it to trade the consistency of not always being able to cast it, for the upside of a really efficient removal spell. Its a very swing card that will either feel amazing or terrible.
    Overall, my stance is that the occasional headache was not worth the upside so I eventually cut it for some more consistent cards. But I think the stance that its a never include kind of card is a bit overblown. Some people like to gamble.

    • @dino-wer-kuh3498
      @dino-wer-kuh3498 3 года назад

      i mean, sure. having inconsistancy for fun/gimmick purposes is fine, but not the bar to evaluate cards. just objectively looking at it, decimate is not worth the risk.

    • @NitpickingNerds
      @NitpickingNerds  3 года назад

      A card being off 30% of the time you want it sounds really bad IMO

    • @trumpetperson11
      @trumpetperson11 3 года назад +1

      @@NitpickingNerds Well my point is when you take Expected value into consideration. If you expect to get 1 card's value out of any one card, then you would obviously need decimate to be worth more than 1 card when it can be played.
      If you look at it in that statistical sense of Expected Value, it doesn't seem as bad. Obviously, its not a perfect model of if a card is good. But if you were to say that decimate is twice as good as a normal 4 drop removal spell. Then the expected value would be 2*(0.7) + 0*(0.3) = 1.4.
      The problem with this evolution is that its hard to say how much better it would be than any other card you are running (when castable). There are also the other implications (its not an easy 0.7-0.3 split since you can still get mana screwed. Also the value of the card would be different in different situations).
      My conclusion - The card isn't always going to be a great fallback, which is sometimes what you are looking for in a removal spell. But in a pure value sense, which isn't always valid in a 4 person format, it seems to be a somewhat decent gamble. I'm not saying you have to play the card or anything. But I am saying that writing the card off immediately, because it led to a couple "feel bads" might not always be the best approach.
      In a perfect world, if we had something like a chess computer for magic, we could run a million games with it and get the real numbers. Finding out if this ~.4 in increased card value in the removal slot would actually lead to increased win percentage. But this also depends on if you are playing vs a lot of enchantments. And if you are, I think this card becomes wayyy better.
      Alos, nothing in this world feels quite as good as targeting someone that annoyed you with all 4 parts of decimate when you have the chance.

  • @mightyone3737

    I think Acid Slime really shines if your deck really wants both parts of the card. If you don't need a 2/2 deathtouch body around, it's probably a terrible card. I still run it in a casual leaning deck, where it's usually a 2 for 1, since it'll block and nuke something coming in. 5 mana is a bit for that, but to destroy what Acidic Slime does costs 4 mana in mono-green IIRC (creeping mold... Totally a playable card! Totally!), so the body is actually great value for a lower powered deck, where blocking is a thing.
    For cards like Encroaching Waste, I feel like it's a bit annoying, since I don't actually think 4 and a land is a horrific price for that effect, we're insanely spoiled by Wasteland and Strip Mine, both of which are way, way too good, and should never have been printed. That said, I can't think of anywhere I'd want to play that card, and I even have an ultra budget legacy land destruction deck (which is Rakdos, and wouldn't mind the colorless cost), and it even likes having lands of my own in the yard. So yeah, maybe I should be quiet, if I don't think the card would fit into a $5 legacy deck, it really does not have a home.
    Edit: Most of the single target removal stuff with no upside is just plain awful in a 4 player format, almost regardless of what it can kill, because 4 players. Things like Avalanche Rider weren't designed for 40 life, it's supposed to be a combined Shock and Stone Rain, which was a good card in a 2 player 20 life format, but in EDH, neither of those cards should ever, ever be seeing play, meaning it's 2 bad effects for a small discount. I would consider Sink Hole if I could handle the black cost, but the lack of versatility really sucks. For the record, don't forget that Mwonvuli Acid-Moss curves right into the very funny Plow Under, in case you want to run mono-green salt.

    LOL You know I am going to mention that I like Acidic slime. casualties of war is very mediocre at best. There is very rarely a scenario where you feel really good about tapping out to cast it, because you really want the value of 4 for 1 to do so. It seems versatile, but it's actually not very versatile at all, for it to be an effective spell you need a very specific board state. I have taken it out of my 2 decks I tested it in because it just sits in your hand and forces you into very questionable plays. Often you run into a situation where you have 1 good target that you really need to take out, but the other 3 targets don't really feel relevant enough to tap out for. You're just better off to run cheaper removal or a board wipe in it's place

    Dust Bowl is terrible. You tap out to destroy a land. You almost never use it more than once, you just need to get rid of a problematic land (like Gaea's Cradle, for instance), the rest of time you have better things to do.

      Dust bowl is great in lands decks like gitrog monster. Together with loam and multiple landdrops per turn it does serious work

      @@dino-wer-kuh3498 Strip Mine and Wasteland are still better. You're wasting a third slot to tap out and go down one card against 2 of your 3 opponents. The next turn they'll go archenemy against you for what? For destroying a couple of random lands? In a game where people get to 5-6 mana on turn 4? Great plan, dude....
