Beezy said he would play Chaos Warp in “non-black” red decks. I think that Chaos Warp is still particularly relevant in rakdos decks because of the lack of enchantment removal.
Fun little interaction with Imprisoned in the Moon and Song of the Dryads: If you put them on a non-land permanent and then use something like Vesuva to copy it, it comes in as a copy of the original permanent, so it can be a creature or planeswalker that can't be countered. Get you an Ugin, perhaps?
I recommend Reap and Sow, in a deck that wants to find specific lands (field of the dead, cradle, whatever). Untapped even! It's like Acid Moss but good!
I'd like to submit for consideration: Wellspring. Its effect -- 'sharing' a land -- seems innocuous enough, but then it provides a sacrifice target for your other lands and spells. It's so satisfying to send someone else's permanent to the graveyard when you're supposed to be paying the cost yourself.
I play casualties of war in my hapatra and windgrace decks. It's always felt like a ton of value and been great. I'm a green mage who likes to ramp like a beast so while 6 is the top end of almost all my decks it's not untenable, especially in windgrace obviously. I will say that I play a suit of lower curve target removal along side it.
I can easily say that Casualties of War is a great card. Everytime I've played it, it does plenty of work and i never feel bad about the mana investment unless it's countered. Unlike decimate, you don't need all the targets to cast it, which makes it incredibly handy in all the situations where you really need it. I usually need to get rid of two problem permanents, and getting an enchantment and the best land, (and on rare occasion a planeswalker) is just gravy on top. Also, 1v1, it can often just win you the game.
I like running cleansing wildfire in my landfall decks to target my own lands, using it as a landfall trigger and cantrip. However I still have it if there’s a coffers/cradle on the other side of the table. It’s really a nice card for two mana.

As someone who played decimate for quite a while in yidris, I don't think its as bad as you make it out to be. I'd say like ~70% of the time you wanted to cast it, you can. And when you do cast it, it feels really good, basically a casualties of war for four mana. Obviously, this starts the debate of is it worth it to trade the consistency of not always being able to cast it, for the upside of a really efficient removal spell. Its a very swing card that will either feel amazing or terrible. Overall, my stance is that the occasional headache was not worth the upside so I eventually cut it for some more consistent cards. But I think the stance that its a never include kind of card is a bit overblown. Some people like to gamble.
i mean, sure. having inconsistancy for fun/gimmick purposes is fine, but not the bar to evaluate cards. just objectively looking at it, decimate is not worth the risk.
@@NitpickingNerds Well my point is when you take Expected value into consideration. If you expect to get 1 card's value out of any one card, then you would obviously need decimate to be worth more than 1 card when it can be played. If you look at it in that statistical sense of Expected Value, it doesn't seem as bad. Obviously, its not a perfect model of if a card is good. But if you were to say that decimate is twice as good as a normal 4 drop removal spell. Then the expected value would be 2*(0.7) + 0*(0.3) = 1.4. The problem with this evolution is that its hard to say how much better it would be than any other card you are running (when castable). There are also the other implications (its not an easy 0.7-0.3 split since you can still get mana screwed. Also the value of the card would be different in different situations). My conclusion - The card isn't always going to be a great fallback, which is sometimes what you are looking for in a removal spell. But in a pure value sense, which isn't always valid in a 4 person format, it seems to be a somewhat decent gamble. I'm not saying you have to play the card or anything. But I am saying that writing the card off immediately, because it led to a couple "feel bads" might not always be the best approach. In a perfect world, if we had something like a chess computer for magic, we could run a million games with it and get the real numbers. Finding out if this ~.4 in increased card value in the removal slot would actually lead to increased win percentage. But this also depends on if you are playing vs a lot of enchantments. And if you are, I think this card becomes wayyy better. Alos, nothing in this world feels quite as good as targeting someone that annoyed you with all 4 parts of decimate when you have the chance.
What about Shivan Harvest for token decks? 4 mana and a creature for the first land but you can repeat it for 2 and a creature as many times as you need.

I think Acid Slime really shines if your deck really wants both parts of the card. If you don't need a 2/2 deathtouch body around, it's probably a terrible card. I still run it in a casual leaning deck, where it's usually a 2 for 1, since it'll block and nuke something coming in. 5 mana is a bit for that, but to destroy what Acidic Slime does costs 4 mana in mono-green IIRC (creeping mold... Totally a playable card! Totally!), so the body is actually great value for a lower powered deck, where blocking is a thing. For cards like Encroaching Waste, I feel like it's a bit annoying, since I don't actually think 4 and a land is a horrific price for that effect, we're insanely spoiled by Wasteland and Strip Mine, both of which are way, way too good, and should never have been printed. That said, I can't think of anywhere I'd want to play that card, and I even have an ultra budget legacy land destruction deck (which is Rakdos, and wouldn't mind the colorless cost), and it even likes having lands of my own in the yard. So yeah, maybe I should be quiet, if I don't think the card would fit into a $5 legacy deck, it really does not have a home. Edit: Most of the single target removal stuff with no upside is just plain awful in a 4 player format, almost regardless of what it can kill, because 4 players. Things like Avalanche Rider weren't designed for 40 life, it's supposed to be a combined Shock and Stone Rain, which was a good card in a 2 player 20 life format, but in EDH, neither of those cards should ever, ever be seeing play, meaning it's 2 bad effects for a small discount. I would consider Sink Hole if I could handle the black cost, but the lack of versatility really sucks. Wants to try Casualties, but Decimate is a trap?? I just tried Casualties for the first time in my most recent deck and the 6 mana part is the feels bad. Its almost always your whole turn and it goes exactly as you described. Kill 2 good things and just mop up whatever else, just because. That feels really bad. Decimate or even Hull Breach let you double spell. Casualties def low power. Test failed Imo.
Joe please do try out that Decimate .. I run it in all my lists containing Gruul... it is 90+% of the time NEVER dead... someone is always running an enchantment of some kind. Especially since there are quite a few enchantment creatures now a days thanks to Theros. 4 for 1 for 4 mana always feels real good and just decimates your opponents.
Although i do have to caveat that with... there have been times where it has forced me to destroy someone's basic land which for me gives me a little feel bads because I don't like to pick on people's basic lands. I am just not a destroy my opponents basics or mass land destruction kind of person.. I want everyone to be able to play the game.
@@Malverde888 Yes that is everyone's argument against it.. and yes that is a valid concern if your meta doesn't have enchantments for example.. but that is very rarely a concern here. However it does not fizzle if someone sacrifices the creature in response for example, it will still hit the remaining targets. That is something people generally get wrong about it.
casualties of war is very mediocre at best. There is very rarely a scenario where you feel really good about tapping out to cast it, because you really want the value of 4 for 1 to do so. It seems versatile, but it's actually not very versatile at all, for it to be an effective spell you need a very specific board state. I have taken it out of my 2 decks I tested it in because it just sits in your hand and forces you into very questionable plays. Often you run into a situation where you have 1 good target that you really need to take out, but the other 3 targets don't really feel relevant enough to tap out for. You're just better off to run cheaper removal or a board wipe in it's place
Dust Bowl is terrible. You tap out to destroy a land. You almost never use it more than once, you just need to get rid of a problematic land (like Gaea's Cradle, for instance), the rest of time you have better things to do.
@@dino-wer-kuh3498 Strip Mine and Wasteland are still better. You're wasting a third slot to tap out and go down one card against 2 of your 3 opponents. The next turn they'll go archenemy against you for what? For destroying a couple of random lands? In a game where people get to 5-6 mana on turn 4? Great plan, dude....

Mwonvuli Acid Moss is the signature spell in my Kiora, Behemoth Beckonner oathbreaker deck. It's really busted, especially for 1v1. Turn 1 mana dork. Turn 2 Kiora. Turn 3 and up as long as Kiora has l oyalty Acid Moss
The best spot for Rider is Alesha. Repeatable etb land descruction. Very easy to wipe peoples mana bases down. Otherwise, not super playable.
Love the video 😎👍
How is Vindicate any different or worse than imprison in the moon?
Color restriction, WB have lot of good answers. Also you want enchantresses usually when played them.
Decimate every time I try and play it there’s either no enchantments and all artifacts or vice versa. Quite annoying. I cut it a few months ago.
I like “hull breach” in gruul decks. I know it can’t hit land or creatures but I will play it over decimate for sure.
@@jakeapplegate6642 do you know of an instant version? I agree that is a great card I just prefer my removal to be instant.
@@shamtactics4712 force of vigor might be what you are looking for.
Green and red have beast within and chaos warp, I would definitely start with those when making a removal package in those colors.
It’s hard to beat the 2 mana for a 2for1 that is hull breach though.
Slime is ok on a Birthing Pod curve.
What about Cyclopean Tomb? Reusable swamp converter
What do you guys think about conquer or orcish squatters ?
Wants to try Casualties, but Decimate is a trap?? I just tried Casualties for the first time in my most recent deck and the 6 mana part is the feels bad. Its almost always your whole turn and it goes exactly as you described. Kill 2 good things and just mop up whatever else, just because. That feels really bad. Decimate or even Hull Breach let you double spell. Casualties def low power. Test failed Imo.
Decimate needs all 4 targets and that is why we don't like it
I like to run Terastodon in my Chulane deck and just blink it to abuse its ETB destruction.
I do that in my Meren deck and than force them to sacrifice the 3/3 tokens ;p
That is one we missed it solid but more off top end value card than land destruction
I like Rith's Charm.
Great content! I think the one card missing in the playable tier is field of ruin, don't you think?
Field of ruin is terrible in commander! It ramps your opponents! Never worth playing in a 4 player game.
Decimate is bad IMO cause it's sorcery speed and it needs all 4 targets alive or it fizzles.
there are just **plenty** of cards without the risk. why not run a card you can play 100% instead
@@dino-wer-kuh3498 Sure, but how many of them will get you a 4 for 1 for 4 mana
Boy it sure would be nice if I could play fulminator mage in my karador deck 🤔
Too bad he a red boi!

I'm a fan of uncontrolled infestation. That's just me though
12:59 Guys, how many times do we have to go over this?! _COLORLESS IS NOT A COLOR!!!_
I play all in Gaddock Teeg lol
casualties of war is very mediocre at best.
It is 1 year later and I am still reading this comment.....
Dust Bowl is terrible. You tap out to destroy a land. You almost never use it more than once, you just need to get rid of a problematic land (like Gaea's Cradle, for instance), the rest of time you have better things to do.
Dust bowl is great in lands decks like gitrog monster. Together with loam and multiple landdrops per turn it does serious work
@@dino-wer-kuh3498 Strip Mine and Wasteland are still better. You're wasting a third slot to tap out and go down one card against 2 of your 3 opponents. The next turn they'll go archenemy against you for what? For destroying a couple of random lands? In a game where people get to 5-6 mana on turn 4? Great plan, dude....
I love shivian harvest in muxus
Seems a little pricey but might be a cool finisher of sorts
Also all my Christmas wishes would come true with the return of disclaimer guy
Hey, do y’all need any (very unofficial) advice on setting up like SEP IRAs as you make this channel an actual business? I’m a registered rep, so I can’t give you official advice on anything, but I could help out with some of the process
The only land destruction spell that's worth it is a "mass land destruction" spell
You wouldn't play Beast Within, Chaos Warp, or something like that?
@@NitpickingNerds I only warp myself in hopes for an impending disaster...
I love using Obliterate/Jokulhaups and leaving my Mogis Groupslug-chantment board basically untouched while my opponents typically scoop. LOL Rakdos version of group hug :P
Shout out to Helldozer
but why would I kill one land if I can kill them all!?
Because you have a heart lol

We are talking about single or multi-target, not mass destruction lol
*FIRST ALPHA MALE*
Nice!
I may have missed it, but field of ruin?
I think that lets everyone get a land card not just the person you destroy a land with.
It ramps all of your other opponents.
NEVER!!!! :P
Not in commander! No way no how!

Nice!
Smallpox is a good one
Unfortunately it's not targeted, this list is more devoted to dealing with specific threats.
Field of Ruin
Give all players a land so it is pretty bad
Nitpicking Nerds I like it in my landfall deck, because it then has extra value of a landfall trigger for me. And I’m usually so far ahead on lands that a single land drop for my opponents doesn’t have as much of an impact.
Yeah, I was in a Modern state of mind at the time. Sometimes it’s hard to shift gears from a format where a card is really really good to a format where it’s really really bad.
Decimate is super great.
Its really not
It cost 1 per permanent type that's a great ratio. I've very rarely been unable to cast it.
@@TonySnow663 the fact it does NEED all 4 permanents on the field to even be cast is the dealbreaker. I much rather play less versatile, low CMC instant speed interaction without weird restrictions
