Imo one of the most senseless trades in the world. A potato must be one of the most easy crops to grow. It starts producing shoots just when you look at it. So there must be a lot of trade and transport be going on that is completely unnecessary, as everyone can grow them at home. But believe it or not, here in West Europe in the supermarket you can find little potatoes from ... Egypt of all places! Grown probably somewhere in the desert with water pumped up from an antique aquifer, or from a canal diverted from the Nile.

Ireland actually produces the most potatoes in the world, but they eat them all.

No. China is currently the world's #1 Potato producer. India is #2, and the US is #3. Russia is a close #4. Ireland's annual Potato production is only about 350,000 tons, so they are not even in the top 10 Potato PRODUCERS. There are more profitable and reliable alternatives for Irish farmers, who still face the vagaries of climate that also contributed to the Potato Blight in years past.
You likely overlooked this because both China and India export little of their Potato production, which is intended to improve food security by augmenting more traditional carb sources such as Wheat and Rice. India is currently the world's #1 Rice exporter, even though Delhi briefly reduced Rice exports over concerns of food security issues.
Also, although the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium are top Potato exporters, they do not rely on greenhouse cultivation (which is unsuitable for Potatoes and cereal grains) as they do with Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Peppers.

@@Arend-q8p Perhaps Ireland is the largest producer per capita? Or the largest consumer per capita? There's got to be something with potatoes they are #1 at. We've just got to dig deeper.

@randomwaffler You missed my (quite inoffensive) joke in response to the first comment on this thread because YT blocked it, even after I tried to repost it. You are aware of how rigorously censored and shadowbanned these comments boards are? Also I don't currently live in NYC, and I have Anglo-Irish as well as Dutch and Belgian ancestry.

Those potatoes go all around. It is pure nonsensical business. Here in Belgium you can buy potatoes from Egypt...
