Actually for being a toy franchise its great. The art direction and set designs are quite iconic, With its original aproach on biomechanical design, almost like a H.R giger painting mixed With star Wars and Cultural traits from various Ocianian Island Cultures. Its timeline is complex and are constently being shaped by massive cataclysmic events, cataclysmic is the keyword that defines bionicle. All combined With a ritch mythos perhaps even a bit H.P lovecraft inspired. There are also many interesting and somewhat complex caracters, altough its main villain is quite bland and conventional.
As a kid, I loved Bionicle because they were badass toys that could be combined and rebuilt like any Lego, but I never really realised how genius the designs were and how much thought and work went into its promotion and lore. This is easily the best thing Lego has done that whole decade.
Yeah... honestly I don't think anything they've done since has even touched Bionicle. Just from an all-around aspect. Storytelling, product creativity, replaying ability, just all of it. Better than anything since then imo.
I think it's the best thing Lego has ever done... Everything else up until that point were purely just toys with nothing much else to it, Bionicle was an actual franchise with a huge story... I know they've made stories and TV shows for some of their creations since but NONE of them are as unique, thoroughly thought out or interesting as Bionicle.. I doubt Lego will ever top themselves with what they did with Bionicle.

Here's the short version. Ancient being built robots to reflect on the universe and life's purpose. After many failures, they made the perfect robot capable of accomplishing this task named Mata Nui. His Cells that worked to maintain him from within were divided into 3 categories. The Matoran (workers), The Toa (Defenders), and Makuta (parasites). Mata Nui was so busy pursuing his programming that he didn't notice he was getting very sick/the Makuta were winning. One makuta named Teridax manages to get him so sick that he passes out and crashes on one of the 3 worlds he was supposed to lego brick together composed entirely of water. His body parts are the islands and Teridax continues to tinker with Rahi, Bohrok, Rahkshi, and other Makuta in order to buy time so he can take over Mata Nui's brain while he's still comatose. The good news is that his immune system didn't forget its job and continued fighting off these infections until they found his head. Once they found his head they started looking for his brain/soul. That's the Mask of Life. Once they found it, the Makuta went full force to keep them from putting the body back together now that they had his brain. They succeeded, but only temporarily. Mata Nui was put back together and woke up, but the big parasite Teridax managed to fling the Mask of Life out of Mata Nui's brain and replaces him. Now a parasite is running his body and the toa spend the next who knows how long fighting for their lives. Meanwhile, Mata Nui's brain/soul makes itself a mini body and finds one of the old failure bodies of past robots that were supposed to be like him. He puts one back together and gets back to his old body. Fulfilling his original purpose, he uses its power to bring the 3 planets of forest, water, and earth together. However, moving planets takes a while and Teridax isn't happy that Mata Nui is back. He tries to squish him but one of the planets that Mata Nui brought hurling into the earth they were standing on squishes him instead. Both bodies are destroyed, but their cells survived on this new world. Now that the world is the way it is supposed to be, everything Mata Nui was programmed to live for is now their opportunity to pursue. Unity of the Worlds, Duty to accomplish this task, and Destiny to see it done. Mata Nui disappears but the two last surviving defenders, Tahu and Taka, lead the Matoran and anyone else who wants to join in to rebuild their new world so they can enjoy it rather than spend the rest of eternity fending off Teridax and his massive ego.

They are not human. Greg Farshtey, the leader of the story team before BIONICLE G1 kicked the bucket, confirmed they are not, and also said that humans do not even exist in the BIONICLE universe, in any of the universes of the multiverse.
I love the amount of effort to the story Lego put into the bionicle line, it did get a little rocky near the end but it still holds up today for me. They also had some of the most epic commercials for a toy line, you can really see the passion they had for them and I think I speak for more then myself when I say it was greatly appreciated by the fans.
I remember when I got these on birthday in 2001. I broke my leg and couldnt go to school and my parents brought home these really cool looking canisters. Every year up through 2008 I'd buy at least one from each new chapter in the saga. This was really the crux of my childhood. I love the video, and anyone who is interested needs to dig into the lore as it's some of the deepest lore of any sci-fi/fantasy stories out there. There were Toa Hunters, Evil/Dark Toa, dimension/time travel, and a myriad of other plots to this over arching beautiful mess of story. I really wish Greg Farshity finished the stories... Anyways, Remember your unity, your duty, and your destiny. :)
Trying to get a complete book collection using Bricklink, and some of them are really hard to get, especially the tenth graphic novel if you know what I mean. ;)
I love how the lore of Bionicle always felt so odd yet amazing. Like totally insane stuff but at the same time its like those legends of old where powerful beings battled each other and Heroes pushed back the darkness. Really great example of a Good VS Evil Epic in my opinion
I was watching this with my girlfriend but she kept trying to take off my pants, very distracting. Against all odds, I was able to keep my pants on and learn the history of the great Bionicles.

What makes me sad is that I was born 2004 so I didn't really get to experince Bionicle, I remember being six years old and buying the Bionicle Stars. I kinda wanna be born 1995 or something so I can really appreciate Bionicle
Grunkan I was born in 2002 but luckily my father had some bionicles with him so i had some of the older ones too. Sadly i only found out bionicle had a story recently
I was born in 04 too, but i had a neighbour that had almost every set of the Bionicle franchise. He gave them to me because he was too old to play with them. So kind off, i grew up with all of it. But i loved Hero Factory too.
Everything from when the Bohrok-Kai came 0:40 to 4:28 with the Phantoka Toas was my Bionicle childhood. Damn.. and the video keeps going to 20 minutes. I don't know why, but the first years of Bionicle was amazing, and it has never escaped my memory regarding all the great deal of details included in the games, legosets, lores and just years of fun playing with the Bionicles. This universe just kept on going, just wish it never ended for me.
I hated what the *"stars"* sub theme did to the story in Bionicle. I understand that it was either cheap sets or nothing, but the story just felt way too rushed and incoherent to compensate for them. And for the lore to revolve around unity in every arc, only for the end to be all about one hero, was a huge disappointment.
Bionicle was actually officially cancelled in '09 but a team of lego staff got lego to let bionicle have one last round, which was rushed in order to release before hero factory wave 1
Was the ending of this story fully released before the bionicle stars came out? If yes then I feel the same. If not I then I appreciate that they wrapped up all the story arcs even if it was a bit rushed.
@@machduel second. They had plans for a couple of more years, the story of the Red Star, the third piece of Spherus Magna, where there should have been dinosaur-like Rahi, was still to be revealed, and the plots of Velika and the Shadowed One were to be completed. However, due to the closure, the authors had to actually fight to complete the story. In fact, Lego wanted to do away with Bionicles even before 2009, but fortunately, the new Glatorian build was correctly entered into the lore.
+RandomProductionz121 I don't know why people hate Hero Factory. It's not like they stopped bionicle, they just came to take over the action figure line till the reboot. I honestly liked Hero Factory(first year stunk bad,2nd year was when it got better, then it went downhill from there again)
+T.F. F (The Flying Fedora) It's not so much the idea that I disliked when i first saw them in stores, it was the over-simplification of the pieces, there is almost no creativity and they come with so little! I enjoyed all the little parts that allowed the creativity to build what you wanted with the original Bionicles but all the new pieces just look bland and lacking in detail....It's sad to me. Hero factory parts are smooth and maybe....supposed to look futuristic? Bionicle was never about the future, if anything it's a story where robots have existed long before we did....why the hell would they look like this? I don't have a problem with new looks and new parts, but making them over simplified and "easier" to put together is ridiculous. These toys who are indeed designed for children, seem to be targeting a stupider breed of child than I was growing up. I never had a problem building them or understanding how the parts worked, and it's obvious that many others feel the same. Why the change? Why are these products (both Hero Factory and the new Bionicle reboot) using these simplified components? They look awful!!!! They just don't look fun to build anymore.
+Corey Arnett I'm gonna be honest here, the combination of the Hero Factory pieces and the Bionicles may be the best thing ever. I like the old style, but the new Toa are super-cool. Imo anyway. I just wish they'd put this much effort into the new storyline, forget this cartoon crap they're dishing out on the new site...
Bionicle came out when I two years old. That said it holds a special place in my heart and my childhood. Thank you for this video. The nostalgia is real
Bionicle will always be remember by me as fantastic toys and the starting point for my appreciation for storytelling. Both the official story of the franchise and the fan-made stories based around it.
This was my whole life at one point. Part of the reason why I loved Bionicle so much is the story. The storyline was absolutely incredible. I read all the books and seen all the movies. 2001-2005 was my favorite. To me, that was the golden age of bionicle.
Bionicle must continue as a fan base we come together for contests and fan story's but... most of the original fans are getting older we need kids go know of this glory with toys bionicle will then live ON!!!!!!!!!!!
I was so young to realize what was going on with this series but as i am now i see it has become more than just a toy franchise it was a gift of childhood and a part of my life the story that progressed with it as i aged was amazing and im so happy i got to experience this and relive it ❤💯
The original writer of the Bionicle lore was diagnosed with (benign) brain cancer at around the time he started working on the world building. But to prevent the tumor from growing, he had to take pills every day and one day, he had a thought. He imagined that inside the pills were tiny soldiers, guardians, who would fight hard and never give up until he could finally wake up and be healthy again. The writer is Mata Nui, the cancer is the Makuta, and medicine he took are the heroes that arrived on the beaches of the island of Mata Nui in mysterious canisters. That's all you need to know to truly understand Bionicle.
I remember as a kid being so confused with how the movies showed the toa transporting the matorans to Mata nui via a tunnel seemingly out of nowhere. Now it makes more sense, and it is pretty cool
Jordan Washko dude WTF. What dies durable mean in that sentence? Cause inika builds really loved snapping when you took them apart. And figures have gears, AND poseability, boohoo! Lego made a system thats meant for all action figures, and didn't make a WHOLE FUCKING NEW ONE! FOR A NEW LINE! THAT WOULD COST A FORTUNE. Lego made it clear the ccbs system is to stay, it isn't never was, and never will be, the "hero factory' system. Take off your nostalgia goggles, and grow up. The new sets are great.

They are not human. Greg Farshtey, the leader of the story team before BIONICLE G1 kicked the bucket, confirmed they are not, and also said that humans do not even exist in the BIONICLE universe, in any of the universes of the multiverse.
I love how it blends Oceanian aesthetic with futuristic looking tech.
We need a true tv adaptation of the entire Bionicle storyline
This man knows something
Anyways,
Remember your unity, your duty, and your destiny. :)
Trying to get a complete book collection using Bricklink, and some of them are really hard to get, especially the tenth graphic novel if you know what I mean. ;)
My childhood is pretty much this... And I'm fucing proud of it.
Yessir
NOSTALGIA
the greatest memory of my childhood, thanks so much
I love how the lore of Bionicle always felt so odd yet amazing. Like totally insane stuff but at the same time its like those legends of old where powerful beings battled each other and Heroes pushed back the darkness. Really great example of a Good VS Evil Epic in my opinion
This is fantastic, I love Bionicle!!!
Watse D'haene me too!!!
The nostalgia it it's to much I'm gonna I'm gonna pass out.
I was watching this with my girlfriend but she kept trying to take off my pants, very distracting. Against all odds, I was able to keep my pants on and learn the history of the great Bionicles.
Oh worm
@@darknova9298 she was attempting so fondle my worm, but I resisted, and now I exist on a higher plane of existence because of the knowledge contained here
Realizing Bionicle was heavily inspired by cell biology adds yet another layer of awe to the series. Ironic how its introduction was from happy mealed with mcdonalds lol but yea Bionicle forever
What makes me sad is that I was born 2004 so I didn't really get to experince Bionicle, I remember being six years old and buying the Bionicle Stars. I kinda wanna be born 1995 or something so I can really appreciate Bionicle
I was born 1995 i remember getting my first bionicle (Toa Tahu).
Marphey My favorite, and Vakama.
Grunkan
I first got into Bionicle at 2006. I really wanted Matoro SO badly. Ahhhh.... Good times!
When you see this stuff again....It's so cool.
The _Gravity_ of this series _hurts_ , man.
ba dum tsssss
Everything from when the Bohrok-Kai came 0:40 to 4:28 with the Phantoka Toas was my Bionicle childhood. Damn.. and the video keeps going to 20 minutes. I don't know why, but the first years of Bionicle was amazing, and it has never escaped my memory regarding all the great deal of details included in the games, legosets, lores and just years of fun playing with the Bionicles. This universe just kept on going, just wish it never ended for me.
Bioncle? I haven't heard that name in long, long time...
So you do know him?
The Fridginator and so...you’ll hear this.
if we get permission from Lego and crowd fund, anyone wanna join in making a better bionicle movie of this story?
Toamastar15 Well Bionicle Revolution is being made
I'll join.
+77 Sadly, It got scrapped...
I would join
Scratch that, we need a trilogy.
The lore is still fascinating to this day
I feared that the lore would be way too complicated for me, but after watching this, I now know everything.
I know that I'm probably writing this late, but in general, there is a video that simply retells the entire main lore of Bionicle in *9 HOURS*
The narrator trying to do an American accent for the Mistika commercial was pretty funny! He couldn't quite get it down.
My undrealized dream from childhood: Bionicles animated series (with all model generations).
Mach it actually continued for a year after and continued to be written by one author I’m pretty sure
7:04.
this music sounds very creepy. in the dark when watching this bit, it will make you think that someone is behing you.
imagine if someone said: hero factory ripoff… (the way everyone would kill him in the comments would be hilarious…)
+RandomProductionz121 I don't know why people hate Hero Factory. It's not like they stopped bionicle, they just came to take over the action figure line till the reboot. I honestly liked Hero Factory(first year stunk bad,2nd year was when it got better, then it went downhill from there again)
2.0 were the only good ones to me. Even though witch doctor looked 2x as cool as fire lord
+Corey Arnett How, pray tell, are the basic sets of either building systems more complex than the other?
If you want complex, buy Technic.
RUclips algorithm. Gave me a gift. I humbly thank you
God damn that voice still gives me goosebumps
Bionicle came out when I two years old. That said it holds a special place in my heart and my childhood. Thank you for this video. The nostalgia is real
Who remembers getting a Bionicle toy at Subway back when they did those kinds of things?
It was actually McDonald's, and I still have most of Maku. The throwing arm and one of the legs disappeared, though.
You get a strong sense that despite the crazy stuff that was happening in Adult Life, All of us Kids from 2001-2010 Grew Up in the Age Of Heroes.
This video is actually so nostalgic for me. I miss it
Holy crap I was so young back then ... I had no idea the story was so in depth , this is interesting writing.
Man this is so nostalgic it hurts
The nostalgia is real thank you for making this video
I am super glad that I traded lego's with a friend and got a green visorack for free!
Best toys ever made..
does anyone notice that the guy who voiced Mata Nui also voiced Tensen in Legend of Korra?
Its not J.K Simmons, Mata Nui is voiced by Michael Dorn in the Mata Nui shorts and the Legend Reborn movie.
I want to thank you, because this was and will always be my childhood. Respect.
2021 they should rerelease the most iconic bionicle sets
I never even owned a Bionicle yet it was still my favourite Lego series. You just made my day.
I will always pronounce lewa as lee-wah
Pikman Gamer i used to call him luu-wa
Lanni Thai 👍🏻
The Bionicle Encyclopedia says it's supposed to be pronounced "LAY-wah", and I've always just gone with that.
its a matter of personal opinion really, you can either pronounce it as lee-wah loo-wah or lay-wah
Pikman Gamer
I pronounce Lewas name in a phonetic/finnish way
Thank you for the words at the end.
God the nostalgia is real
Bionicle will always be remember by me as fantastic toys and the starting point for my appreciation for storytelling. Both the official story of the franchise and the fan-made stories based around it.
Still got all my Bionicles that I occasionally get out when no one else is home just to relive it all lmao
You play with them?
@@durantheexplorer7982 I poo on them
@@FreedomFighter1759 I pee on mine
@@durantheexplorer7982 i cum when i see them
Mislav Grosinic I do the same when I see Roodaka /s
This was my whole life at one point. Part of the reason why I loved Bionicle so much is the story. The storyline was absolutely incredible. I read all the books and seen all the movies. 2001-2005 was my favorite. To me, that was the golden age of bionicle.
Nostalgia, the Bionicle Ages are never forget by me :`)
Luciano Coutrim I forgot this at once, and I realise this now(I thought my memories are sh*t).
“And the dreaded Rahkshi-servants of the evil Makuta.”
The way the narrator says Rahkshi is perfect!
It is tho
Bionicle must continue as a fan base we come together for contests and fan story's but... most of the original fans are getting older we need kids go know of this glory with toys bionicle will then live ON!!!!!!!!!!!
And from what I've seen, there are.
y e s
Mislav Grosinic yep
Vakama: _"Gathered friends. Listen again to our legend of the Bionicle..."_
Wait a minute.... "Reboot the Bionicle universe"..... in 2015 bionicle was rebootedLego planned this
I was so young to realize what was going on with this series but as i am now i see it has become more than just a toy franchise it was a gift of childhood and a part of my life the story that progressed with it as i aged was amazing and im so happy i got to experience this and relive it ❤💯
I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND THE FULL LORE ITS BEEN 15 YEARS AND I STILL DONT GET IT
The original writer of the Bionicle lore was diagnosed with (benign) brain cancer at around the time he started working on the world building.
@@Galimeer5 Holy shit that'S deep.
@@Galimeer5 I just thought it was a matter of Lego trying to be hip with the kids by using cultural appropriation of Polynesian words and beliefs
@@otaking3582 stfu
@@Galimeer5 that's actually beautiful, thanks for that! :)
This video is beautiful.
to this day this will always be my childhood

"Reboot the Bionicle Universe, or submit to the power of Makuta...."
Damn
I remember as a kid being so confused with how the movies showed the toa transporting the matorans to Mata nui via a tunnel seemingly out of nowhere.
Now it makes more sense, and it is pretty cool
Let's all begin a GoFundMe to pay Morgan Freeman to narrate the entire BIONICLE storyline from 2001-2010 and maybe 2015-2016 also!
not g2...
Fuck yeah
+TheRoyal , Herald indeed
Or put him as the narrator of Generation 3!
I watch this over and over and over again for hours on Lego.com those were the days
I loved bionicle, but I've got mixed feelings about the upcoming reboot, because, y'know, herofactory.....):
I really don't like hero factory.
PaperBoy570 the sets use the same parts as hero factory and look very restrictive in the way you can build them yourself
PaperBoy570 I hate the reboot.
James Chumsa-Jones agreeded they are nowhere near as customizable or durable as the original the just make me want the original more then ever
Thank You So Much for the Summarization of the Bionicle Journeys from 2001 to 2010! Bionicle consisted of the 6 Elements of the Universe >>> Fire , Earth , Water , Wood/Plants , Metal & Wind ... The Bionicle teached us to Live Harmoniously with Each Other & to do Good Karma together & to Stay away from being Egoistic , Selfish , Greedy & having Revengeful Hearts that brought nothing but Sufferings! Before the end of 2010, Bionicle was in a golden age of prosperity.
It started with exploring the Island of Mata Nui featuring the Toa Mata and the Matoran.

This could make a good cinematic universe
Thank you for completing a piece of my childhood.

The music of the narrated history is EPIC!
