And it was just getting good too
I calculated that if the Great spirit robot was a set sold by lego, he'd be about 802 km tall (or 2 600 000 feet) to be at scale with the matoran and toa sets.
This collection seriously needs to be put into a museum. Or at the very least you turn it into your own. You practically have every single set ever released.
At this point, he owns every set, combiner, alternate model, mask, krana, kraata, kanoka, canister, and many MOCs that are as close to cannon for characters we'll ever get. Missing items from the real world history, such as statues, displays, banners, style guides, story bibles, unique 'artifacts' (like the pure platinum Kanohi Avohki), and prototypes would truly make his collection a museum, which I would love to see made for this incredible theme. And when it comes to media, this video, BionicleSector01, and the BioMedia Project have gathered a full, digital, and free collection of all Bionicle media.
I can't believe I didn't see it sooner, but the part about Teridax disguising himself as Turaga Duma and taking over Metru Nui, while having toa lured to their deaths at the hand of dark hunters stationed to be waiting for them, feels a lot like what happened to the Jedi during the events of the Jedi Purge and Order 66 in Star Wars.
This was a spectacular run down both audio and visually done. My only, only criticism of this wonderful anthology is the moment addressing the real world inspiration for Bionicle. There wasn't an actual lawsuit, representatives for the Maori people as well as other pacific Islanders reached out to Lego to inform them they were using sacred terms in an offensive manner. Lego responded by drawing up a new code of conduct for inspired properties with input from the concerned parties. Frankly, I think it's a bright point in Bionicle's history and that Maori and Pacific Islander culture deserves respect and credit for inspiring such a spectacular series.
Still sounds like the Maori and Pacificers who brought that up for some dumb reason were bitchy ass dipshits. I'd assume most Maori and Pacific Islanders thought everything with bionicle was cool and awesome, whereas likely a small minority of retards sent the "concern"
I was obsessed with bionicle lore as a kid. This is about to be nostalgic as hell Edit: wow, the origins of mata nui are way crazier than I remember Edit 2: holy SHIT this is a lot more complicated and dense than I remember.
It might have been more interesting to add timestamps instead of "Edit" and "Edit 2" (especially for edit 2. Did you comment this after the first 20 minutes or after finishing the video?)
It's funny, this lore is beyond dense and I didn't even know all of it, but so much of it was still tucked away in the back of my mind and I remembered it as if it was fresh despite up to 20 years removed from originally experiencing this story
Personally I like this way of telling hero stories. The timeline of bionicle borders on what I would call shared myth or legend rather than a true story. The language, structure, and manor of conveyance feels more like a shifting legend evolving as we uncover more history from unseen dig sites and artifacts. It’s like a secret culture we all got to experience as boys. We recall the adventures of the Toa Metra or Toa Inika with the same reverence you would here an Ancient Greek would speak of Heracles. I just think THAT is how you elevate beyond a simple hero and enter into something entirely different and much more enduring.
It wasn't really that they thought Hero Factory would necessarily be more lucrative under normal circumstances and more that the writers for Bionicle had other things they were doing and had to wrap things up
With how dense and sprawling the story had become, it became much harder for new kids to get into. Meanwhile the older ones were growing up and losing interest. It makes sense that LEGO would want to pivot to a line with a smaller plot that was easier to get into. It’s why Transformers reboots every few years.
It's kind of amazing that some 8-year-old me's favourite characters were the Voya Nui resistance, especially the weird one who was always telling the wise-sounding stories and driving everyone around him insane. Only to then find out many years later that he was one of the most important characters in the entire universe. Man, I love Bionicle.
I almost died from laughter when you pulled out the whiteboard. Thank you so much for making this video, I will rewatch it a couple of times whenever I want to relive my childhood. Have a nice day
Bionicle is literally almost perfect for a table top roleplaying game, come to think of it, I might have some ideas... Oh and also it might be perfect for adaptation into an animated series or something else
I always thought 2001-3 Mata Nui would be a great setting for an MMORPG. You get an open world with a bunch of different areas and stuff, and the finale of each year's story would make a cool dungeon or raid for teams of 6 players.
Yeah, I personally never liked that twist. It was like the midichlorians in Star Wars. Trying to explain everything in a sci-fi way ruined the mystique for me.
@@robethematoran6975same, I knew about the robot and stuff but now learning that it happened inside the actual robot? I'm very disappointed. I know it has a very deep meaning for the creator but the way it's handled doesn't make sense. @@magnusprime962Except midichlorians is something George made up later, the great Spirit being a bigass robot was part of the story since the beginning.
to this day, our family uses the term "makuta plot" to indicate an incredibly well thought out plan with layers upon layers upon layers where you can't lose
Absolutely tragic it never happened, but Farshtey's novels were amazing, I read every one of those I could get my hands on. Plenty of comics too. I even enjoyed the second movie quite a lot. I remember 1 being a little cheesy and 3 being messy, but I remember 2 being very competent. Legend Reborn was pretty good too until the ending act for me (again cheesy with the beetles making a giant), but the first act of Mata Nui meeting Ackar was super cool. They were very well done.
The reboot was animated, it was terrible. Too safe to interest kids and far too simple to interest the old fans. It lasted one year, the animated series only lasted 3 episodes and was very heavily shortened. Also the toa mats had only personality trait each.
Thank You for this As a kid I thought the story of Bionicle was simple. There are good guys Toa, and there are bad guys Rakshi, Vakhi, Visorak or Pirakha. They fight for some special mask or their existence and that's all. I'm 26, I started to buy old Bionicle sets only for collection (my mom gave my old sets to my younger cousins, and the little bastard lost them when moving). I wanted to rewatch Bionicle first 3 movies in Polish dubbing, when I accidentally found this video. Now I see that Bionicle story is the best storyline written to sell toys since Transformers. I hope that Lego will someday come back to it.
I still remember the feeling of revelation I felt when it was revealed that Mata Nui was the Matoran universe this whole time. I remember when that reveal was made and suddenly so many things began to suddenly click in place. I don’t think I will ever experience a feeling like that again.
While I don't have first have experience with that, since I was 7/8 at the time and didn't care and about the lore behind the sets, I did have several instances like that in my experience with BlazBlue and Trails of Cold Steel.
i honestly never knew the story was THIS expansive. i thought it stopped after web of shadows when no more movies came out, i had no idea there were comics and shit that carried it on
9 and a half hours and this video still couldn't tell me where Good Guy fits into all of this. For real, though- this is an amazing video. I was an avid fan of Bionicle for my entire childhood until the series ended. I read most of the comics that came w/ LEGO Club magazine but there was so much in this video I never knew about. You are the real Chronicler, Duck. Bravo.
when i was a child i had absolutely no clue there was this much story told outside the movies, i'm utterly shocked at how much there is to know and how much info i had no access back then because of language barriers. i'm so happy to revisit this universe, thanks a lot! i'm enjoying it thoroughly
Hey DuckBricks, I just wanted to write in to say that this series has been honestly the best part of my days for the last few months, I loved every second of it and I couldn't wait for each episode to come out. You truly and absolutely have an incredible talent for narrating, editing, and writing. I can't imagine the sheer amount of hours that went into making all this, but either way, your hard work shows. As per usual you deserve waaay more subscribers and views :) I can't wait for what's to come and keep it up I honestly can't put into words how good this series has been
@@DuckBricks Any chance that you'll compile the names of each track used in chronological order in a pastebin or something and then put it in the video description. I highly doubt that many people can find all of the tracks that aren't blatantly obvious used in the vid with the names alone. I only managed to find one by myself, and that was the theme that plays at the beginning of each episode, which for those who're on the same quest as me and haven't found it yet, it's "Legend of the Bionicle" from the Bionicle: Mask of Light OST.
I say we petition Lego to do a soft reboot/animated adaptation of the whole G1 story. Any plotholes can be smoothed out, and the story can be given the attention it truly deserves
This is a damn masterpiece dude, honestly so well done and well edited overall. Thank you for being our chronicler for such an amazing and long-running storyline! Also the star wars styled intros to each episode are such a neat touch, and the Phantom Menace music whenever Botar appeared made me genuinely chuckle every time.
As a kid who didn't use the internet much and didn't know there were any other bionicle books/comics outside of the couple I received as free promotional items, it was a DELIGHT to finally hear the full story. Is it bloated with all the side adventures and pointless leaps into alternate universes? Yeah. Is the amount of betrayal, mind-control, and fits of blind rage eye-rollingly hilarious? Also yeah. BUT, the depth, consistency, density, and dedication of this universe is BADASS, and goes beyond any other toyline I can think of. The blurred lines of good and evil is an especially unique feat. This franchise deserved more than to be abandoned like this, without a doubt. You've done us a great service by presenting it in the densest form possible (funny as that sounds).
It's absolutely insane to me how fleshed out the lore of Bionicle was, just for a line of buildable action figures. It's such a fascinating universe that was created. It's so much deeper than it looks on the surface. The fact that you've taken the time to streamline all of the story, told across all the different mediums of books, comics, webseries, movies, games, etc. is amazing because I think this is the first time I've actually seen everything told in a comprehensive and entertaining way. I also really like the little interjections for pieces of trivia here and there. This is a series that means a lot to me, as it does for everyone else who grew up with it, so I just wanted to say thank you for putting in clearly a huge amount of work to make a video like this. Bionicle may be gone, but it lives on thanks to people like you!
5:30:40 Man, Federation of Fear was the only story I actually did read as a kid, because I truly always loved Vezon whole design and idea and wanted to see more. That story is so genuinely good. Glad to see others think so as well!
I remember reading a lot of it but not finishing it. It's such a good idea putting all these past underused characters from different eras together in one team. Not entirely sure why Carapar was there though 😅 Vezon's always been super enjoyable. I remember his taunting of the Toa Inika in the chamber of the Mask of Life very vividly. He felt insurmountable. I don't even remember how they beat him.
The Ignition Trilogy was so amazing as a kid. My grandma always bought me the newest comic book every month. Good times. Still a bit sad, that we did not get another trilogy of movies for that story arch.
I loved Bionicle as a kid and fell down the extended lore rabbit hole about two days ago. I'm very glad this series exists to fill me in on lore I didn't even know existed.
Watched this whole thing. This video is well crafted well written and edited. I hope many new fans will watch this massive video to learn the full legend of bionicle Thank you for making this wonderful video this is something that will last forever
Unironically, one of my first and favorite pieces of epic storytelling. I still remember finding Beware the Bohrok at a book fair in grade school and being taken by its worldbuilding.
This video and the story of Bionicle that was written come together to make one of if not the most impressive pieces of media to exist in the modern day. The amount of human effort that was done by those who wrote the story and you who collected it and made this video is something I will always cherish, but cannot begin to fathom. The story, however, is now a thing people are able to hear in full. Thank you for what you have done.
I don't know what to say. Watching this back, all the pieces fell into place. I had a few sets scattered across the breadth of the series, but I never realized how they all fit together. I read the story of the Metru Nui in the Mask of Time book, I picked up the comics in 2007 with LEGO Magazine at the start of the aquatic arc, but I could never reconcile them all until now. All throughout the video I felt like Jack at the end of Bioshock: flashes of recognition at different images as everything clicked. Thank you so much for this. It's made me appreciate the series so much more than I ever could have as a kid.
I agree with Noobie Dewbie, because these series have touched me more than anything else i've seen in such a long time. It tapped into a defining part of my life as a kid. Your work and passion has not just brought the love and nostalgia back to life for me, it has enriched it unlike anything else. It's become even bigger now than it already was. Seeing all those cool characters again, dealing with their own moral fissions is just amazing. So amazing that some people even missed the like button. Thanks for all of it man!
This has been a fantastic series. Thank you for your hard work sharing this fantastic story. I've had the chance to show this to friends who never realized how indepth this franchise got.
If I ever need to teach any younglings (edited) the way of the Bionicle, I'll make sure to refer them to your highly informative video. Impressive job in putting everything together from the Bionicle Storyline/Universe! :)
@Oil tank Nah most are millennials as the youngest of them would have been the exact earliest age that BIONICLE was recommended for by LEGO in 2001, which is six-seven-ish. Zoomers would have been the second biggest one, ofc. Still a huge part of fans were them, yes. And many of them would have been six too. But it’s also said that older kids liking stuff often means younger kids will start liking it too. That’s how LEGO marketed their toys. Make it for more grown up kids and the younger siblings will follow suit because what the older kids think is cool is seen as cool by them.
I'm extremely happy and satisfied that fans are carrying this series on all these years. I and Lego themselves put the story and stuff down but you guys keep it relevant for revisiting. I too, hope for a revival... maybe somebody will come along and make the animated series discussed in other comment threads...
I don't know if you read all of these comments, but I wanted to thank you for making these Bionicle lore videos. I was obsessed with Bionicle as a kid, and finding this video reignited a passion that's been dormant for over fifteen years. Hey DuckBricks, the audio cuts out towards the beginning, and I’m assuming that it’s because of copyright, but if there’s a way that you can edit back your audio, that would be cool.
This was honestly fantastic. I am HUGE Lore guy so learning every little thing about this world that I’ve known about for so long is fantastic! I remember seeing Bionicle a ton growing up, but didn’t really get into it to any major degree until the end with some of the final sets. Why? Because Bionicle started when I was 1 and I wasn’t allowed some of the more “advanced” Lego Sets (as my mother called them) until I was like 8-9. Cause ya know. Small pieces? So after years of not touching the franchise I am very happy something like this exists for someone like me who wanted to get into the series for a long time, but either missed the whole thing because of age, or possibly found all of this really…really complicated due to ALL the various media. So DuckBricks…thank ya. Greatly. You have earned yourself a loyal subscriber.
Just wanted to thank you for this awesome video, which had been playing in my headphones the last two days while sorting out my old Bionicle collection that has been in pieces since I was a kid.
I am a woman and I didn’t grow up with this. I am watching this entire thing to make my fiancé happy. If this doesn’t prove my love I don’t know what will, wish me luck.
The real world is absolutely terrible and gets worse every day Thank you for bringing this world back to me, and helping me to appreciate parts of it I didn't even realize were parts of it Thank you for reminding me there used to be something I was always excited to see the next chapter of, and ultimately something I can still be excited to one day see the finale of - even if no one ever actually writes an official ending.
Takanuva's detours through the alternate dimensional timelines must have been a truly sobering experience. Seeing so clearly how justice is not safe just because heroes exist. His expereinces in these doomed timelines would have redefined to him what heroism means.
Took me five days to watch this incredible impressive video in its entirety but it was damn worth it my dude. Extraordinary job, well done and thank you so so much for all your effort and passion put into it. I stumbled upon it by a mere coincidence and I do not regret clicking on in one bit.

This was fantastic. I was never expecting it to be so easy to digest, but your impeccable narration allowed me to finally comprehend this amazing universe!
After watching segments of this video at a time, over the span of a couple weeks, I must say as a big Bionicle Fan that this is one of the greatest videos I have ever seen! There is so much detail of the lore and it covers everything in a way that is informative, engaging, and entertaining. As someone who still misses Bionicle and continues my passion for this franchise by collecting any Bionicle merch I can get my hands on and cherishing the memories of the stories that make up the legend, from the bottom of my heart I say thank you DuckBricks for this amazing video. Thank you for putting together this grand tour through childhood nostalgia, fantastical wonder, and epic storytelling.
This is one of the greatest compilations of lore, artwork, and masterful audiovisual storytelling I have ever experienced. I loved Bionicle as a child and now I appreciate it even more, thank you DuckBricks for this incredible monumental work!
The Agori/Glatorian are still 85% organic, so I feel like the toys as well as especially the Legend Reborn appearance are not very accurate appearances
I always assumed the organic parts were mostly inner parts like organs, muscles, and blood vessels. I pictured it like General Grevious. A mostly metallic and cybernetic exterior, but if you were to break open the metal armor and casing on the outside, you would see organs and other organic living tissue.
To me the fact that the toys had hands stood out starkly for me as opposed to the not so handly hands of the toys I had before. And aside from the movies they didn't really have any hands prior.

That’s amazing!!! I’m so glad to hear that ^u^
I would say it's a low point, you don't need people's permission to make cultural references
Still sounds like the Maori and Pacificers who brought that up for some dumb reason were bitchy ass dipshits. I'd assume most Maori and Pacific Islanders thought everything with bionicle was cool and awesome, whereas likely a small minority of retards sent the "concern"
Friendly reminder that officially, Lewa is still missing in the jungles of Bota Magna. #findlewa #justiceforlewa
I smell a tabletop champaign
And the story stopped being continued right before Velika was about to try to kill him and his unusual company.
not my boy Lewa
I was obsessed with bionicle lore as a kid. This is about to be nostalgic as hell
Edit: wow, the origins of mata nui are way crazier than I remember
Edit 2: holy SHIT this is a lot more complicated and dense than I remember.
YES! EXACTLY THIS!!!
Same! This took TWO HOURS to get to the parts I was familiar with! When did the lore get so crazy?!?!
It might have been more interesting to add timestamps instead of "Edit" and "Edit 2" (especially for edit 2. Did you comment this after the first 20 minutes or after finishing the video?)
Yeah I remembered so much of the lore and then that was actually only like 45% at best
It they just had better ways to convey their stories back then, I might have stayed invested for much longer.
@@porky1118They did a pretty good job through the books, but it seems like a lot of fans only read the comics.
The fact lego gave this up for hero factory boggles my mind.
@@magnusprime962and yet here we all are, back after all these years
It's kind of amazing that some 8-year-old me's favourite characters were the Voya Nui resistance, especially the weird one who was always telling the wise-sounding stories and driving everyone around him insane.
Give me about 3 months and I'll write this

It's a very nice touch, since many of the 2000s kids watching this grew up with both franchises.
It’s a testament to just how hard they worked on this that I’d unironically watch a grittier more serious version of this as an adult.

Kind of mind blowing that the bionicle universe was just them living inside a giant robot
Yeah, I personally never liked that twist. It was like the midichlorians in Star Wars. Trying to explain everything in a sci-fi way ruined the mystique for me.
@@magnusprime962 i agree that almost ruined bionicle for me not gonna lie it took many years to come to terms with that
@@robethematoran6975same, I knew about the robot and stuff but now learning that it happened inside the actual robot? I'm very disappointed. I know it has a very deep meaning for the creator but the way it's handled doesn't make sense. If the matoran were supposed to be robotic and not sentient, why create an entire ecosystem / universe inside the robot? maybe i missed it in the video but I think it doesn't make as much sense as everything happening outside as I supposed it was before

to this day, our family uses the term "makuta plot" to indicate an incredibly well thought out plan with layers upon layers upon layers where you can't lose
This is the most wholesome thing ever, thank you
We definitely need a Bionicle animated series.
There was one for a short amount of time, if i recall. I didn't watch much of it though...
I agree plus ultra
The reboot was animated, it was terrible. Too safe to interest kids and far too simple to interest the old fans. It lasted one year, the animated series only lasted 3 episodes and was very heavily shortened. Also the toa mats had only personality trait each.
we did get a 4-episode miniseries in 2016, but it was pretty mid all things considered. pretty animation tho
The sacrifice of Matoro is up there with the death of Ace in One Piece as one of the best moments in comics/graphic novels/manga history.
Wtf ace dies awww shit
Man, that was one of the moments in fiction that really made 8-year-old me come to terms with mortality.
It was better in the book, but the comic did a good job of it
Thank You for this
As a kid I thought the story of Bionicle was simple.
I feel your pain bro. My mother dumped my bionicles...
I thought so to I was wrong it interesting how much lore there is.
They did bring it back for a year or 2. It was terrible
@@C._Bradford correction: I hope that Lego will someday come back to it and don't screw it up.
I too lost my own collection I only have one unique build I did that I preserved for my son when he's old enough
I still remember the feeling of revelation I felt when it was revealed that Mata Nui was the Matoran universe this whole time. I remember when that reveal was made and suddenly so many things began to suddenly click in place. I don’t think I will ever experience a feeling like that again.
When in the story was this revealed? I was too young and missed this reveal..
@@tiotoy99 2008 I think. Dang, that was a crazy moment.
“Click into place” sounds like a perfect metaphor for Bionicles 😁
The simple "oh....OOOOOH!" só many people felt at that moment
While I don't have first have experience with that, since I was 7/8 at the time and didn't care and about the lore behind the sets, I did have several instances like that in my experience with BlazBlue and Trails of Cold Steel.
i honestly never knew the story was THIS expansive. i thought it stopped after web of shadows when no more movies came out, i had no idea there were comics and shit that carried it on
There were a lot of books too. Not just guidebooks, genuine novellas for kids that continued the story. They were often the best parts of the story
Bravo.
How Good Guy fits into this?
Well, Velika watched over the Matoran Universe for the longest time. But someone has to watch the watchers...
Good Guy was actually planned to be Mata Nui reincarnated, however the storyline ended before this could be implemented
20-something years ago I pulled a little po-matoran out of a happy meal.
Now I'm wasting company time watching the entire lore series
when i was a child i had absolutely no clue there was this much story told outside the movies, i'm utterly shocked at how much there is to know and how much info i had no access back then because of language barriers. i'm so happy to revisit this universe, thanks a lot! i'm enjoying it thoroughly
As per usual you deserve waaay more subscribers and views :) I can't wait for what's to come and keep it up
I honestly can't put into words how good this series has been
Thank you so much for the kind words - I really appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed!’
@@DuckBricks Any chance that you'll compile the names of each track used in chronological order in a pastebin or something and then put it in the video description.
I highly doubt that many people can find all of the tracks that aren't blatantly obvious used in the vid with the names alone.
I only managed to find one by myself, and that was the theme that plays at the beginning of each episode, which for those who're on the same quest as me and haven't found it yet, it's "Legend of the Bionicle" from the Bionicle: Mask of Light OST.
you have no idea how much my inner child pops off whenever this full grown man comes out on screen, holding actual Bionicles
I say we petition Lego to do a soft reboot/animated adaptation of the whole G1 story. Any plotholes can be smoothed out, and the story can be given the attention it truly deserves
This whole franchise was a journey. It truly was one of a kind and to this day I miss it greatly. If only I could go back and experience it all again.

Before this video, I never knew that was Makuta an order and not a person. Definitely makes a lot more of the lore make sense
Good to know that the 5 hour lore video wasn't the longest one

9 HOURS???
This will literally make 9 blockbuster movies
5:30:40 Man, Federation of Fear was the only story I actually did read as a kid, because I truly always loved Vezon whole design and idea and wanted to see more. That story is so genuinely good. Glad to see others think so as well!
"Don't say it..."
"We're gonna need a bigger boat."
And yeah, Vezon is probably at least one of my top three favorite characters.
I remember reading a lot of it but not finishing it. It's such a good idea putting all these past underused characters from different eras together in one team. Not entirely sure why Carapar was there though 😅
Vezon's always been super enjoyable.
One of the greatest sci Fi epics of all time.
I loved Bionicle as a kid and fell down the extended lore rabbit hole about two days ago. I'm very glad this series exists to fill me in on lore I didn't even know existed.

Unironically, one of my first and favorite pieces of epic storytelling. I still remember finding Beware the Bohrok at a book fair in grade school and being taken by its worldbuilding.
The Voya Nuvi part of the story is elite. The entire bionicle history is flawless but that specific part is just fantastic

If I ever need to teach any younglings (edited) the way of the Bionicle, I'll make sure to refer them to your highly informative video. Impressive job in putting everything together from the Bionicle Storyline/Universe! :)
@Oil tank I thought it was millennials. But it could be Zoomers too. I've updated my description to "younglings"
@Oil tank There are 30 year olds who are prominent fans too. But maybe you’re right. At least there were more millennials early on, I’d say.
hey yeah, i'm 13 and i just got into this fascinating bio-mechanical world and fandom last year
