PixieSpells Actually DO belittle the situation because it happens to be in a movie, which is more often than not overly dramatic, or false, or a skewed perception of real life. Instead if you want to congratulate the girl, find out the name of the real girl and what she actually did, so credit goes in the right place.
@Mark Joseph Middleton Oh I see, like this kind of situation NEVER actually happens in real life. The thing is (fiction or not), if it teaches a good lesion who the hell cares?! Are you going to belittle every single good lesson from a book because it happens to be fiction? Just because it's film does not make the point invalid. This isn't a fantasy world with dragons flying around. It's at least attempting to resemble reality. And if a serious lesson is to be learned here than No it should not be belittled.
PixieSpells Yes I am going to be little every single situation that comes from fiction, because it is fiction not real life. It is a fantasy world. The problem with movies, tv, and the news is, for many people it skews their perception of reality. You only need to look at the cult following some hits have, and how people then reference real life situations using it as a base. The reality of day to day life is it's fairly mundane, most people don't pay much attention to the person next to them. Can you learn a lesson from a movie, sure, but you have to take it in context. Watching an hour of hollywoods representation of what these kids life is REALLY like doesn't cut it. Or if you want to get specific 10 - 15 minutes for each of them.
@@ronixdelcroix6542 True but at the time she lied because she was closed minded and she grew up being told "Protect your own and your own alone". That's all she knew. So she did the mature thing and fixed her mistake. It's life. It happens. For some ppl, when you're taught one specific thing your whole life and it's been enforced in your head and you were told you HAVE to follow it, and then someone or something else comes along and challenges your belief and you're given a life test to choose between belief and right/wrong, that's a tough decision. It's the end choice you make that matters. The choices you made in the past matters but your ending choice that can change your life forever is what's the main and most important choice. Everyone makes choices that land them in touch situations, it's all about how you end up handling it and doing what's right/best. Eva fixed her mistake. And her life changed for the better.
I think her mom was crying because she told the truth. She was proud and sad at the same time. Her daughter did the right, and put herself at risk. Mixed feelings in soul. In the end she loved her bravery and honesty.
That's what I believe too, but the movie never specified 🥺 the thing I remember from it is that her father didn't want to see her anymore, and due to the circumstances Eva had to live with her aunt ☹ I'm still making theories on the reasons why her mom didn't leave with her, but the one that makes more sense is that she had to stay there because she's the wife of the major gangster in prison, so the gang has to protect her 💔 and I guess that's part of the crying too, because she couldn't leave even if she wanted to.
To those of you calling her a "rat"...how would if you feel if your life was on the line? Your entire freedom flashing before your eyes, knowing you'll have to spend the rest of your life in prison over something you did not do? What if that was your son, daughter, wife, mother? Do you believe they deserve to die for something they didn't commit in order for someone else not be a "snitch?" Please answer that.
Obviously the right thing is to admit who actually did the crime...but doing that while you're in the hood and have gang affiliations can kill you. There's no such thing as the right thing in gang crime, it's all about protecting your own and turning a blind eye. I used to live in the hood and whenever these types of crimes occurred, no one gave any info to the cops, even if they saw everything. Because if they did, they could find themselves and their whole family killed the next day.

Rainey156 In a previous scene the man you see being prosecuted was arrested for the shooting of a man he did not kill. (Sorry, don't remember their names. He was the brother or friend of the Asian family you see sitting in court). In an even previous scene the man being prosecuted and Paco, the man at 0:52, were in a physical altercation. In the heat of the moment from bitterness he pulled out a gun when they were at the gas station and tried to kill the man being prosecuted. He fired several shots; however, he ended up killing another man instead. Eva, who was considered to have witnessed the crime claimed it was the African-American that killed him, when it's evinced in the film that it was her boyfriend, Paco. (In a court of law, if a witness has no intention of malice, their statement is considered evidence). After several reality checks through out the film she realizes it's time to do the right thing and be truthful about what really occurred and what she saw. After seeing everyone's family and the negative effects her life had caused, she was finally honest and told the courtroom that Paco was the man who actually killed him. Woo. Sorry if some of that doesn't make sense. It's 11:30pm at night; I'm exhausted and refuse to proofread.
At least Eva chose to do the right thing. She knew that her boyfriend had to pay the price for committing murder. After that, it just sucks that she's forced to live with her aunt for safety.
It's not easy to tell the truth, but when you feel that something doesn't feel right and your heart is saying that you have to tell the truth then you should.

She knew that was a real possibility, and yet she showed great bravery by telling the truth anyway. She was lucky to be spared because her father was respected.
Eva was inspired by miep gies. That's why she testified. Eva knew what was coming for her if she told and still did it anyways. Ms. Gruvall's attempts to educate Eva finally worked.
Her attempts to teach Eva were always getting through, it is why she was so adversarial. On the one part, she is an ingrained part of the gang life, she is a legacy, on the other half, the things she was being taught resonated with her, and it is confusing and complicated when she feels it should be simple, which makes her angry because its not, and she lashes out at the person she feels is responsible. She is basically at war with herself, battling over what is right, and not knowing which, this is why she yells at her mother before her testimony, she was reaching breaking point about the two mutually exclusive paths she was being pulled down.
Not just her but all those boys and girls in that room who were involved in the gang. Lady g opened their minds and showed that they dying because of the gang people would follow Their lives normally and then they would easily forget about them

I liked the subtle reaction of the kid who is on trial when she finally told the truth. It was as if he had snapped back into reality from the dark hole he was in to shield himself. Like the walls finally came down and he could see the light again
Just because her dad did doesn't mean she has to. She doesn't have to be like him. He raised her to think all this time that only winning for herself and her people is all that matters, but then she saw the effects of calamity it causes in the long term. She's finally free. They all were.

If your family member is guilty, "blood ties" go out the window. Don't let innocent people suffer. Have heart.
Why? Why!? Why is it so bad to tell the damn truth!? All of the people in the world who call others rats for telling the truth make me sick! Telling the truth doesn't make you a rat, it just makes you an honest brave person with courage, don't listen to what others say, instead, stand up and tell the truth.
What hairspray she us cause her bun stayed on!! 🤔🤔

Being brave is the hardest choice to make and you do not always get respect. But knowing that you did the right thing is a feeling that can not be beaten.
Some criticized Eva for turning on her own people, but she did the right thing. Blood is thicker then water, but right & wrong is thicker then blood.
Doris Santiago thanks for clearing this up for me!
Omg can I use this for my English🤫
@@shumishu6019 right
At least Eva chose to do the right thing. She knew that her boyfriend had to pay the price for committing murder. After that, it just sucks that she's forced to live with her aunt for safety.
Sooo relieved Eva told the truth about her own boyfriend killing that Cambodian guy
in the convenience store! Paco looked furious.
This got me im the feels. Especially the background music. It just made it more emotional for me. I legit teared up whe. I saw the boy and his mother.
SAME
God bless Mrs G. For letting Eva hide in her classroom until it gets super late so Eva wouldn’t get jumped God bless her soul ♥️
Evas my favorite character... i love how her eyes are opened throughout the story
it's not everyday you find real people like who sacrificed something to do the right thing.
I'm glad my teacher back in middle school made us watch this movie during class. Such a good movie👏🏻
It's not easy to tell the truth, but when you feel that something doesn't feel right and your heart is saying that you have to tell the truth then you should.
We're watching this in my journalism class.
same!!! me too but in my math class LOL!
Clorox Bleach why would you watch this is your math class lol
I watched this in my Adult Living class my Senior year of high school in '07.
That's why it's call fake news lazy ass fucks don't know how to cover real shit
Thia scene was so...wow! O.O
I was really shocked! But that's the right thing she did!
I really love this Moviel!
It's soo sad and cute! 3 That the story is true makes everything sader...
No
The people calling her a rat I’m Praying for y’all , y’all need help , like the freedom writers was fortunate to get
R.I.P armand he will be missed bye his family friends and others he is safe in gods hands now may God bless you all🙏🏾❤️🕊️

in real life she would have been killed over this its a damned if u do damned if u dont situation regardless of outcome she knows she did the right thing its just sad people can be killed for doing the right thing
Renee Diaz She had the advantage of having a well-respected father
Renee Diaz This did happen in real life though. The film was based on the dairies of these real kids.
U forgot this movie was based off of real life events. This WAS real life, it was just acted out
@@Cr0wn_Vic No it didn't. The lady Eva is based off is still alive...
She knew that was a real possibility, and yet she showed great bravery by telling the truth anyway. She was lucky to be spared because her father was respected.
She broke a generational curse that day
Eva was inspired by miep gies.
Lady g opened their minds and showed that they dying because of the gang people would follow Their lives normally and then they would easily forget about them
If I was in that situation and snitching gets you stitches idgaf!!! I'd rather tell the truth then lie straight up!!!
Rest in power Armand (played the kid in the orange jumper)
Don't you go into protective services after something like that?
Esther Rogers yeah if that’s offered or if you desperately need it
This girl had incredible guts especially at that young age
This is my favourite scene of the movie. Very powerful and full of emotions
1:10 saw them
1:31 running
1:37 talking
1:53 let’s go

I think it's impossible to watch this film without crying 7 billion times.
It's so amazing and so well done. Should be on everyone's watch list.
Eva was going 2 lie but she decided to tell the truth even going against her own people that took bravery
They would call this snitching. But the truth is every day like that. She saw Asian family lose their family the ppl who were guilty and the black family who was going to pay then her mother… it’s only snitching when it comes down to ur people remeber that it’s only snitching when u finally need help …. Which both is false U do what’s right and nobody should be siting in prison for someone else’s mistake . They should of protected her and has her in watch even though in end she was sent off to her aunts. Then again this is now new age there’s cameras everywhe
That’s the moment I cried the most in front of any movie ever
When Eva looked at the family I felt so sad
Cupcake Cult I think she told the truth because she saw the whole family there and well the family didn’t would want the guy in the orange suit in prison for something he didn’t do
@@Davidbautista683 I know
R.i.p Armand Jones (the boy in the orange jumpsuit) he was killed on the last day of filming just 18
The film wasn't even released yet. 😢😢😢
Rip Armand Jones.
Those people who think she’s a rat should be ashamed.
Better to be “rat” than not saying anything or speak the truth.
I was proud of her.
This was one of my favorite movies. I read the book in middle school and actually met Ms G when she came to flint mi to speak. She was so cool and nice.
You met her ? How lucky
Ela cresceu aprendendo que se deve proteger os seus independente do que houver, mas aprendeu a fazer o certo
She grew up learning to protect her own no matter what, but she learned to do the right thing.
When it said Paco, I thought it said PacMan did it xD
GeekMario xD
Eva was never a traitor for coming clean. She witnessed everything that one night and had to tell the whole truth rather than let an innocent young man be locked up for a crime he didn’t commit
looking at his family did it to her. I won’t lie it would break me I couldn’t send a mother’s child someone son/brother to prison on something they didn’t do.
Only because she told the truth under oath? Oh my god!
I’ve lived in Southern California my entire life Im Hispanic and the one thing you never do is snitch unfortunately the system is set up in a way that if you do the right thing and tell the truth about a crime in court it will haunt you until you die .... it will follow you through the rest of your life if you ever go to jail and you are Hispanic you’re automatically required to be placed with your own kind and there’s always one main individual that runs your unit - block - dorm and paperwork about and of who you are will be immediately brought to light so if you have ever snitched against another member of a Hispanic gang that is ran by the Mexican Mafia you will most definitely meet your end in jail... and I’m not even in the Gang.. but as soon as I hit county jail I am a resident which stands behind southside Mexican gangs and I am forced to take orders as if I was in the gang.. what a beautiful country we live iland of the free and home to the brave🇺🇸
We know how gangs work. And it’s not just Mexican mafias, this is how gangs work all over
@@amberaiyana9203 no all gangs are different, black gangs are clumsy and beef with each other in the inside while Mexican gangs stick together locked up
This still is my favorite scene of the movie...
So strong when she decided to tell the truth.
Honesty!!!!!
You're cool
You're both cool
You're all cool
I didn't do it.
I really hate these fixed ads that invariably appear before every clip. Can someone do something about it?
Al Black I know I hate them too especially if it’s for 15 seconds
This shows why parents should make sure their daughter NEVER dates a criminal, especially gang members.
I hate the term snitch, it puts other people down over something that is right. And teaching other people that the person who tells the truth is a snitch, it makes people not want to tell the truth because they don't want to be put under the Shame, and creates new consequences of it. She is being honest and she shouldn't be called a rat or a snitch over something that universally is the right thing to do. To be honest about the guilty. Just my opinion and sorry If I offended anyone
its funny i tend to be called like that in a catholice private middle school and i never knew the word snitch was and i simply felt proud of being the other orderly eye for the teachers (i moved in 2015 all the way from southeast asia and boy we are strict to be discipline on our character) so i was naive on the whole smitching culture and i even thought that doe'snt make sense on why people hide such petty truths?.. boy until i heard that history.. it felt so long ago (1990s kids era) but i hope it's lessening with each new generation... on freshman year was the first time i saw a pregnant teen & exposed to seeing a school fight for the first time (i barely seen it back home as it's rare for kids to fight but bot the level of violence in the US where we gotta prepare on school shooting to one time false alarm bomb threat) but this 2021 i seen none of it now maybe in my place but its a small change and is probably happeing somewhere else and all it needs is the kids some support, rationality and motivation to make a dedication of change.
Tough line to walk. Being loyal to who you are or what you are.
WOW this is a powerful scene in the movie . I damn near cried
My most favorite scene in the movie.
This is the reason you don't commit murders with co defendants period.............
All of you people calling her a “rat”, would have done the SAME damn thing if you all were in her position or better yet, you all would do ANYTHING to get out of a situation where you’re already charged with a crime, with your freedom at risk
Her diary entry is sooo crazy!! Its more detailed. Shes so brave
She didn’t die like a so called “rat” because her dad would have those guys killed if they tried anything but she will have no allies for the rest of her life if she chose to stay in the neighborhood I pray she makes it out to a life she decides and not what is decided for her.
Me, my sister and pops went to see this when I was in high school. Haven't talked to my pops in years but this was a neutral memory I suppose.
When people need your help, help them it doesnt matter if its court or at a gas station, help out, show people you count as a person and you are not just mario-cell block-10, ah! You know what i mean, peace!!!
I still cry over this scene Mexicans ride for their family till the end being a traitor is bad but she had to make a choice either continue with that lifestyle or want better things in life
Maria G Some Mexican don’t ride for there family...
Had nothing to do with her being Mexican. It’s the influence everything had on her
I always had a crush on the asian girl lol
Yeah she is too
+Soulja Fraud I know, she's a Muy Thai fighter now too lol
Kyle Aaron that's cool. I like a girl who is beautiful and can kick ass
Nah I always had a crush on her bf🤤
Can yall not? Missing the whole point of the movie to lust after someone.
There are some things you can/and cannot live with, it's as simple as that!
Ive watched the movie a few times and never understood why she said Paco did it instead of making up some person so both people would walk.
Because the person that she said did it could go to jail and lying under oath is a crime
Its not fair how a random black kid has to wear an orange jumpsuit and didn't even comit murder
This movie was beautiful
