When the teacher asked if any of them had been imprisoned, and that girl asked if a refugee camp counted as being imprisoned...I dunno why but that moment really struck/hit me emotionally.

People are saying this scene is cheesy and corny and sure they're right I guess but I love this scene because it's helping them realize they have more in common with eachother than they thought and that they're all going through something.
and it was that much effective because in the scene before, you can see Erin Gruwell seeing an invisible line of segregation in the front of the school.
It's all very touching I'm sure, but yet again we see the trope of the big white hope.

This scene gets me every time. A few years ago we did the same at my school. There were tears, but at least now we can understand each other better. There was even a former bully Who apologized for her misbehavior against me. And now we're friends, I find this Challenge Day (that's what we call it, a few American people come over here to organize this thing) or step on the line an awesome way to listen to each other's stories and so to eventually understand each other better. And with more understanding, there is (at least here) less bullying.

This is in a poor area and back in the 90s when racial tensions where higher.
speaker came to my school last year and played the trailer before the exercise. Apparently he went to this high School. If his questions applied we stood up. At first it was do you like Kendrick, Eminem, 21. Then continued to get stronger. Have you witnessed violence, has your friend died from gang violence, do you know a drug addict personally etc. Have you attempted suicide. One girl cried in her friends arms and I tried not to cry in front of the school since it was in the gym. The whole point was to see you were not alone by looking around the gym with all 9th and 10th grade. It was tough but eye opening to see some of my friends standing up.
My school is like 95% Latino here in tx and a lot of teachers are white or from other parts like this class,

My AP English Lit teacher had us play this game our junior year of high school. It got pretty honest, pretty intense, some students even cried. It ultimately made our bond tighter as a class.

This scene sealed it for me. They hate each other with everything they have, but they have the same likes and experiences. They're all just troubled kids looking for fun, acceptance and hope.

@@Kyiverdam And, what's the problem? The kid still had lines from the actual journal itself, and even made good friends with his classmates. Even if he didn't have the exact same problems as his other classmates, he was still appreciated and accepted despite his skin color, which was the entire point of the movie/real experience that happened. I wouldn't doubt that there were some white kids in the journal that went through of those things too.
my highschool attempted this, problem was they cheap asses needed us to buy the journals, and they WERE graded

That's totally unfair to say that your "school" is cheap when it is the teachers who purchase supplies. We buy everything ourselves. I do my best for my students, but there comes a point where I can no longer afford to supply everything.
Tiffany Bolton I'm pretty sure in public schools classroom supplies come under an allocated budget or it is part of a booklist for students to purchase themselves.. It is pretty weird for you to have to buy your own supplies. Unless of course the school doesn't deem the supply a necessity for learning, in which case of course it wouldn't fund it. And if students really can't afford the supplies, they can get help from the school. This is what usually happens in Australia.

This makes me cry ( this movie is wonderful) this scene makes you think and in the end no matter what color or races you are we all have struggles we're dealing with. But I cry even more because in today society we have forgotten that and a lot of people don't see this anymore and only see hate... it's sad

I had my own Mrs. G back in middle school. I'm asian and a minority (only have 4 of us) in a school in long beach. He would set up classes like this, he was also our english teacher. He made us dream, made us write, made us question. He is a great teacher, one I cant ever forget.
We played the line game in my class but with different questions. Similar to this we truly saw what everyone was going through. The questions included
Who’s parents are not together anymore?
Who has ever been homeless?
Anyone who has lost someone close to them?
I stepped onto the line for all 3 of them and many others. I was the only one who had been homeless in the past (temporary accommodation) I got so much support after that and now I’m living in my home x

This was by far the most powerful scene. Cause it shows that she was truly interested in getting to know her students and how to work with them as a first time teacher dealing with students who have been thrown to the wayside by the system. And it was a wake up call to them that they are not as different as they think. Kudos to the teacher.
What the movie is trying to imply and infer to us about how these students may be POC’s and may be struggling with certain issues in their home and family life such as poverty, homelessness, single parent houses & drug addictions along with mental health issues.
It’s so sad but dearly empowering & beautiful to see it from that perspective.
i feel like as she asked more questions and the deeper they got and almost all of them stayed on the line there was a deep connection and they all started to realise it as they looked at each other and i like the way she let sindy decide.
I will never forget the times teachers did this exercise with my class, twice in middle, it started off as innocent but once the questions get deep it brings back many memories like once a girl it my class began to cry when the teacher asked if we have any family members who were deported and it trigger a sad memory for her, she was allowed to stop and see the counselor. Another time I will never forget when a teacher asked "step over the line if you've ever tried drugs/drink" everyone except me stepped over then I did the I love you sign because we had to, then on the flip side a question that still haunts me was "step over the line if you've ever been bullied by a teacher" I was the only one to step over, and in that moment I felt so disgusted because I was in a class where everyone was popular or favor by teachers and I thought "they'll never understand the trauma of what that feels like" I felt so jugded even though the exercise was meant to join us together, looking back that class was full of snakes. I'm over it now but damn.
The Hispanic gang in Long Beach were called " East side Longos " and the African American gang were called the "crips" so the Asian were involved too called "Tiny raskel gang". And these why the kids had so much beef in school because where they were from and what color was better or protect their race in Long beach 1980s - 1990s

They made us watch this in middle school, I'm now a college graduate and I still think about this movie sometimes. Seeing this scene makes me wanna rewatch it
i respect white boy bc he was so scared once he realized he was the only white student in his class he could have easily switched out but he stuck it out and became family with this class

This is so devastating to me as a mother. To think of babies having to fight so hard for basic human rights to grow and be nurtured and loved and have opportunities.
I showed my mom this movie a year or two ago. It's one of the few she wasn't scrolling on her phone and made her cry. It's an amazing story. And shows just how impactful one person actually giving a dam can do

This part is so sad... not many movies these days can have even half of emotion, connection, or effect that this one movie does.
She has changed many lives. She willing to teach them about we are all individuals and they have a voice and someone does care. They live in a-neighborhood where the support is almost less ten 0. A good teacher cares and will use any tool to get their attention.
This scene is really moving, it made me think about all the suffer and all the terrible things that a lot of people have to go through. It shows how despite all the differences people can all have something in common, from the best and happiest one to the worst one.
I was taken by all the games of glances that all the students shared that made me undestand their feelings and the mutual understanding from all the tragic and bad things that they all have lived.
Definetly on my watchlist!!!
In middle school a group came to my school. The presented the line game and it was the first time I had ever seen it. I don't remember the questions asked. I don't remember what I answered. I have really a really bad memory problem. What I do remember is crying and making a friend. I can't remember who she was, I believe she left later that year. That line really made a big impact on my life though and made me think about the need to be empathetic towards others. I'm in my late 20's now. I still think about it to this day.

I loved this movie because I used to come from a school similar to what’s potrayed in the movie, filled with gang violence and fighting everyday. It’s heartwarming to see that we shouldn’t be fighting because most of us probably go through similar things 🥺
Its not only that the students get to know each other in a personal level buts its that she gets to really see through and deep in them for the first time, that makes this lesson so powerful
I really love the way she doesn’t give up on her students. I think the journals can be a good idea, ‘cause it can help them open up and see that they are more alike than what they think. I wished our school had a teacher like her!

This movie hit different, the first time I saw it I was amazed.
Our 6th grade teacher made us play the line game because that day, we were reading about the Freedom Writers. The end of the year we met the real teacher too! Our teacher was even invited once to join the freedom writers. I miss that teacher very much..

I met the teacher, the real teacher, Ms.G she was a very nice lady.
In my life I've had a few teachers like her. I wish all my teachers were like her, I would probably would have done much better in school and wouldn't be so afraid of myself most of the time.

I think it’s a stunning scene because it shows the reality of the life of many teenagers. The game played is a beautiful way to make young people understand that they have in common more than what they think. I really loved the meaning of it!
I like how she was teaching those greater values to the kids to say that where ever they came from or what ever set or hood they've claimed it's nothing compared to anything that go going on now....their friends that gotten killed or end up betrayed shows that they didn't have to end up down those paths, they could be better then them....live better learn to forgive learn from their mistakes,embrace their strengths and acknowledge their characteristics for what they are based on what they go through.Parts of this I've done in school too we would write about things they make us who we are...and things about those that inspire us and make us be proud of being be what we are it's relatable to me.
We all have something in common and we all are going through something in life so instead of seeing the differences in eachother, let's just see how we can help eachother and learn from eachother and just live together and be happy
This makes me want to be a teacher and work with kids. Let them know that I’m here for them, to have someone to talk to. Someone to look up to.

I went to a school with Mexicans, Asians, and blacks and I was one of the only white people in my school. There was a “white school” in my town where the majority of students was white. People at my school which the majority was color thought I was white privileged. They hated me but we did this same thing in class and I could answer every question like everyone else. When we were asked to take the journals people came up one at a time and when the bell rang and everyone left I left (without a journal) and my teacher asked why and I told her “why would it matter? And I just left. My teacher gave me the journal next day in class and I took it home but never wrote in it and when my teacher found out why it broke her heart. Because I was so involved with gangs I didn’t have time to write in my journal when I was wondering if I was going to die tonight. So she told me to write about that and I did.
Wonderful thing about this exercise is; it shows we are all different and yet experience the same things. Nobody knows your story unless you tell it!

Teacher played this game during my freshman year. Really humbled me in the end
I remember watching this movie at 2 AM and enjoying every second of it lol
My class (8th grade) did this but instead of gang violence it turned to mental heath problems and eventually sexual assault. Now some people might think this scene is cheesy or dumb, but the truth is I think it really helped our whole class bond closer. By the end of it, everyone was crying, except for a few students who were laughing, though they got shunned; and yes, I feel that teachers should do something like this more often. It really helps people understand how many people have gone through something similar.

At a camp I worked at, the staff and the older kids both did this. We called it the privilege walk though and we took a step forward each time something applied. It was crazy to see how far back some people were or how far forward some people went. I highly recommend it 👌🏼

4:01 Chris, Pablo, Lanky, Wickedly, Alex, Ryan, Jennifer, and a few family members. I know there’s more but it’s been years since so I sadly don’t remember all of them. I wish I can cry about it now but all my tears have ran out so much before. I almost got murc (murdered) growing up too and even a few times that happened recently. It’s a cruel world out there and it sucks there’s more violence than love. Spread love not hate because saving one can save a lot more than you think.
