FHP Wild Chase in Collier County, Florida

- Police Report: On June 1, 2024, at approximately 12:14 P.M., I was on stationary patrol on I-75 (State Road 93) north of Pine Ridge Road when I took note of a silver vehicle traveling south with an illegally tinted windshield. I initiated a traffic stop just north of Pine Ridge Road. The vehicle was a 2018 Dodge Charger bearing a Florida tag. The vehicle pulled to the right shoulder and stopped. I met with the driver who identified himself via his valid Florida driver's license. Mr. Carlos Alberto Castellanos, DOB 04/17/2000, also gave me the registration to the vehicle. I could immediately smell the distinct odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. I called for a backup unit, to which Trooper Rodriguez #509 responded. As Trooper Rodriguez arrived, I ordered the driver to exit his vehicle. Mr. Castellanos was not cooperative and was making overt movements in the vehicle. At one point, Mr. Castellanos reached into the back seat, and I could no longer see his hands. I pulled my service gun and pointed it at Mr. Castellanos. I continually gave him commands to exit his vehicle, to which he did not comply. Mr. Castellanos put the vehicle in drive and fled the scene of the traffic stop. Trooper Rodriguez and I gave chase with both lights and sirens activated. Mr. Castellanos exited onto Pine Ridge Road and began to travel west. I attempted a PIT maneuver, where I missed completely. I was able to regain control of my patrol vehicle and re-enter the pursuit. I was able to get alongside the left side of his vehicle and executed a PIT maneuver, turning the vehicle in a counterclockwise direction. Mr. Castellanos was able to flee again as he crossed over the westbound traffic, entering the eastbound lanes of travel. Trooper Rodriguez was now the lead pursuit vehicle. We all traveled east, in and out of traffic, until we approached Logan Blvd. Mr. Castellanos turned right and began to travel on Logan Blvd. Trooper Rodriguez was able to execute a successful PIT maneuver where Mr. Castellanos’s vehicle turned, and I crossed over the raised cement median. Mr. Castellanos again attempted to flee the scene when Trooper Rodriguez maneuvered his vehicle's left front corner to the right front corner. I went over the median and placed the front of my patrol car to the right rear quarter panel of the fleeing vehicle. Mr. Castellanos’s vehicle did not move. I exited my patrol car with my gun drawn. I gave orders to get out of the vehicle, to which Mr. Castellanos finally complied. Mr. Castellanos was ordered to get onto the ground face down. Mr. Castellanos complied and was placed in handcuffs without further incident. Trooper Rodriguez jumped onto the hood of the stopped vehicle and had his gun drawn. I told him there was another occupant in the vehicle, to which he was able to extract that individual and place him under arrest as well. A search of Mr. Castellanos revealed a clear plastic baggie of a green leafy substance, which smelled like marijuana, in his left front pocket. There were no other drugs or illegal contraband located on his person. Trooper Rodriguez was able to search and secure the passenger, who turned out to be a minor. Nothing illegal was on his person. I asked Mr. Castellanos if there was anything else in the vehicle that we should know about, such as drugs, guns, knives, etc. Mr. Castellanos replied that there was nothing else in the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that the inside driver and passenger areas of the vehicle were clean. We searched the trunk and located a black backpack. Inside the black backpack were the following: a scale, five vacuum-sealed clear plastic baggies containing a green leafy substance which smelled like marijuana, a clear plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance which field-tested positive for fentanyl, a pair of scissors, many clear plastic zip-lock baggies used for packing illicit drugs, one used zip-lock bag with a corner cut out commonly used for distributing illicit drugs, one dollar bill in US currency with white powdery residue with a crease to distribute fentanyl, a clear plastic cup with green leafy substance residue for measuring marijuana, and another black backpack within the first backpack with marijuana residue. Mr. Castellanos was originally uncooperative but had a moment of clarity while on the way to the jail. Mr. Castellanos is currently on probation for similar charges, including fleeing to elude with lights and sirens activated. Mr. Castellanos placed the minor in harm's way by involving him in illegal drug activity and placing his life in danger while fleeing to elude Florida Highway Patrol Troopers after the legal stop. The Division of Child and Family Services (DCF) was called, and this incident was reported to that agency. DCF opened a case and will follow up regarding the child endangerment charges. Mr. Castellanos was charged with VOP as he is currently on probation and given no bond.
Per court records, the defendant was charged with the following:
1. Resist/Obstruct Officer without Violence
2. Possess with Intent to Sell, Deliver, Manufacture Controlled Substance
3. Use, Possess, Manufacture Drug Paraphernalia to Transport Drugs
4. Flee, Attempt to Elude Drive at High Speed or with Wanton Disregard for Safety Person
5. Trafficking in Fentanyl 14 grams - < 28 grams
6. Possession Controlled Substance
7. Delivery Controlled Substance
8. Possess Drug Paraphernalia Deliver to Minor
9. Aggravated Child Abuse
10. Induce a Minor to Become or Remain Delinquent, Dependent, or in Need of Services
11. Reckless Driving

Sad thing is car dealers cannot ask if they are American citizens when selling a car. They then usually get a 30 day temp insurance policy let it lapse and continue to drive around.

These videos make me wonder why so many cops seem to insist on using their back seat as additional storage space. I assumed that the back seat is for transporting suspects so it should be treated like a mobile jail cell. It is a security risk to keep other crap back there! It also looks really unprofessional.

I live here in Naples off Pine Ridge Rd and was leaving the store when this was in pursuit. Heard the engine revs and sirens fly by. Thank God no one was injured. What a mess. This kinda crap is happening more and more here lately. Like, at least once per month there is a high speed chase involving a Stellantis performance car. Great job, FHP! Thank you for all you do for us here throughout The State of Florida.

Number 1 rule when riding dirty is to NOT ATTRACT ATTENTION! I’ll never understand why most criminals drive the most obvious suspect vehicle *(Dodge Charger)* and always have illegal tint then *break simple traffic laws* even when not being chased for no reason making it easy for cops to spot them. *Don’t stand out, blend into normal traffic if hauling drugs, got a suspended license, warrants, no insurance etc.* 🤷♂️

I've watched so many of these where there actually wasn't any contact with other motorist. Police cars get roughed up, the perps car is usually totaled, but I am pretty sure if the car is involved in a crime by the policy owner it is not covered by insurance. Our insurance is high because of bad drivers, but also because of the cost of repairing modern cars is retarded.

I think both Florida and Arkansas have the most aggressive state police vehicles for such. I know Tennessee uses the Ford Explorer Police Package with a six-cylinder, but being an oldie from the yesteryear, there is something about these V-8 engines that have both a great "throat" and power. If other states use a V-8, I am unaware. Thank you, Florida, for keeping the roads much safer.

7:12 has to be one of the most PERFECT pit maneuvers I've ever seen. Waits for the perfect moment in traffic, cuts corner more sharply than the suspect, immediately sees an opening and attemps the maneuver. That officer is more skilled than most rich kid NASCAR or Indy drivers today.

Collier County Sherif arrested this guy back in 2019 for a high speed chase that led to seizure of drugs and a weapon.
He only got a 6-7 secounds on the troopers, when he fled. He lost that in one uturn.
That went in mom’s one ear, and right out the other! He’s worried about the A/C and she’s worried about the car! 👌🏻

I drive down that road that the chase ended on when coming home from work. Had he tried to run at 5pm, he would’ve been stopped under the overpass for I-75 because of traffic. That’s crazy. For anyone wondering, the road he turned on was Logan Blvd and at the end of that road is a bunch of winding corners and clustered traffic. He would’ve wrecked out eventually.

Exiting onto Pine Ridge road to run from the cops ? Most days it’s a parking lot. I can’t believe the cop pulled him over for speeding as he wasn’t doing 95 weaving through traffic like 10% of the cars are on 75 on that stretch.

Can’t understand why large trucks (tractor trailer) are allowed in the left hand lane of traffic. As a retired LEO from HI, there are laws prohibiting large commercial trucks from using the lane.

I lived in Miami, I hated it the day I drove in, and the day I drove out. I was fortunate to live in the best areas, but that doesn’t mean much when your surrounded by the city.

Can't say I ever saw so many Crown Vics, Explorers or Tahoes put out as much smoke as those Chargers do. Best buy actual American cars with a history of building tough stuff for this job.
Police cars are not subject to emissions or smog control requirements like regular passenger cars. The more you know 🌈

You are correct, but if you see what I am talking about in this video, you'll know there is something wrong with the cruiser.
It isn't like I was comparing apples to oranges here, either. The Crown Vic, Explorer and Tahoe are all build for the same thing. There are even more models adapted for these purposes, but those are the main ones currently and in recent past. The Charger is a turd for police use. That's just a fact.
It's too bad that the Italian Charger is all that's left for V8 pursuit vehicles. The Crown Vic 4.6 may not have been the fastest pursuit car, but they didn't smoke at 50k either.
