CREATING a tiny JUNIPER BONSAI TREE from a small nursery start. JUNIPER BONSAI TREES for beginners.

  • I take a Green Mound Juniper from nursery stock and turn it in to a Bonsai tree. It's got a long way to go. These Junipers are also known as Juniper Procumbens or Juniper Nana and are commonly used for bonsai. Originally I thought I might make a cascading bonsai style out of this tree. It had a really nice lower branch that would have had a nice flow over the edge of the bonsai pot but I decided to take it in a different direction and make a more informal upright style bonsai after getting a different vision for this tree.
    Instagram: @HerbandRootsGardening
    Before you water, the soil should dry slightly. Juniper roots don't like soil that is too wet. Misting the tree is beneficial to increase humidity, especially after the tree has been repotted.
    Juniper Bonsai trees can be repotted every couple of years or longer using well draining soil mixture. Don't prune the roots too aggressively.
    Juniper Bonsai trees sold commercially are often Japanese Garden Junipers, also called Green Mound Junipers (Juniperus procumbens nana) just like the tree you see in this video. Other popular species are the Japanese Shimpaku (Juniperus sargentii), the Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), the Japanese needle juniper (Juniperus rigida), the California Juniper (Juniperus californica), the Rocky mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) and the Sierra Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis).
    The foliage colors range from dark blue-greens to light greens and the foliage can either be scale-like or needle-like. Scale junipers usually have needle-like foliage when they are young (called juvenile foliage), the typical scale-like foliage appears later. After heavy pruning or bending, overwatering or other stress often juvenile foliage will grow again. It can last a few years until enough normal scale-like foliage has grown and all the needle-like foliage can be removed.

I fear I may have overfertilized it since this is in an all organic mix and most of my other trees are not but I used the same water/fertilizer combo. I will put an update in a future vid.

      You can leave it outside all Winter in a sheltered spot. You want it in a spot where the root ball does not get a lot of temperature fluctuation. Some people will bury the tree with the pot in the ground to keep it a stable temp or just mulch around it. In Spring you can repot it when it is coming out of dormancy. Good luck with your tree! Let me know how it goes.

    I just got back into the hobby I'm reading watching and learning. I got a rock juniper from Eastern leaf. Apparently I'm doing something right because the growth has been amazing within only eight days. I definitely need to prune some shoots that are crossing into one another what not. I have read cut in between the needles, scales or leaves I don't want to hack them off at the base can you help me with this where should I cut. Let's say I have a one and a half inch shoot that needs to be trimmed back where do I cut it as I don't feel comfortable cutting it at its base?

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  3 года назад

      That is awesome! Try to cut it back to an outward facing bud and leave a bit of length for die back. Cut between the needles to avoid browning of the tips which can be unsightly. If in doubt leave more length. You can always cut more later if necessary. Start small and it might give you a different perspective on how you want to proceed with branch selection. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

    Hey quick question! I just bought a juniper bonsai tree, but I don’t have much of a choice of leaving it outside due to my current living situation. Is there a way I can keep it indoors without killing it?

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  3 года назад

      For optimal health they do need to be outside year round but realistically that isn’t always possible and we’re just trying to have fun and grow some trees. The main thing is that it gets a seasonal change. Junipers will grow in zone 10 which is basically tropical but they will get some seasonal change in that zone too. If you have a cold space near a window where is doesn’t go above 50 that might work. We’ve just got to do the best we can and experiment, have fun, learn from fails and celebrate wins. A year indoors for Winter will not kill it but without dormancy it will get weaker and weaker over time. I’ve read studies that say the minimum dormancy is about 6 weeks. If you’re able you could try keeping it in the fridge for a couple months. I would love to hear your experience with that if you try it. My wife would kick me out! Good luck with your tree.

    I just got one and I was doing some research. Do I water it until water drains out the bottom or do I just give it a little water every day? My instinct is not to give it enough water to drain but I’m not sure.

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  3 года назад +1

      Generally it is best to water them very well so the water is running out the drainage and then let them dry out a bit. That way the soil is not staying wet from daily watering. This will also depend on how much Sun it gets, temp and humidity. In the hottest part of the Summer in full Sun I was watering daily. I have this planting in a standard potting mix with quite a bit of perlite added to it.

    My girl just got me a juniper bonsai. I live in Arizona. It's an outdoor one so I've done some reading and doing my best with it on the patio and in a spot that gets sun in the morning but not beat down by the hot sun all day. Any tips for the weather out here to keep it alive?

    Sir can some one do bonsai plant growing business on mass scale and if yes is it good profitable ??

      You can do it as long as you know your market and are passionate about it. I would start small as a side project to get to know the ins and out and then scale up from there. Good luck.

    Please, put this tree-to-be on your bench, water and fertilize it and just forget you have it. I can see me when I just began bonsai, the urge to keep working on it is a siren's song. DON'T DO IT! The only way to get a nice big trunk is to let it grow for at least a year. I'm no expert by any stretch, but this I learned early. I know that it's so tempting, but by constantly pruning it, it will never get bigger.

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  3 года назад

      @@anthonyzivkovich8665 I keep it outdoors in full sun during the Summer. Sheltered spot outdoors in Winter. In the Summer in full sun, I water daily and use a very dilute 20-20-20 fertilizer each time. I have it in about 50/50 peat-based potting soil and perlite. I am in zone 5a and it is getting cold so I have been watering about once a week now. Watering will depending on the amount of sun, humidity, temperate and type of growing medium. I will repot in the Spring and make an update. Let me know how it goes!

    No it will not give it a longer growing season. They need the cold winter dormancy to survive. I would leave it outside year round. You’re gonna kill by bringing it inside every winter.

      @@Shavenerd53119 Thanks! I did do some research on that prior to bringing it inside. That is what I based the 2 months on this year since one of my trees can't survive my usda growing zone (5a). Most resources I have found state that generally 1000 hours or 6 weeks of dormancy is the minimum. For example, www.evergreengardenworks.com/dormancy.htm. Thanks again for your input! I do plan to leave this one outside year round in the future. Might experiment with minimum dormancy in the future.

    Grow it out bro. Put it in the open ground preferably in good soil full sun and let it grow out there largely untouched another ten years or so, before even thinking about starting the refinement stage.
    And in that time, learn learn learn. ))
    Then another 5-10 years you might have a bonsai, a nice one too.
    Leave it an a tiny pot and keep fidlling with it and 100 years later itd still be a twig in a pot.
    I knowit can be hard starting out but, discipline yourself brother and youll be reewarded. ))
    Id recommend getting a more advanced or "finished" looking bonsai or two (or more idk) if you can afford it, to look at and fiddle with and show off and all that. Then as you orogress and learn you wont be so tempted to mess with and hack up all your tress that are still in the development stage (as opposed to refinement stage. )
    Which will be the vast majority of your plants. Maybe some more advanced nursery junipers or aomething too that are closer to refinement atage and can get practise on and get something that looks like a bonsai quick. Or practice wiring and stuff with branches that have been cut off a larger reee.
    Anyway just my two cents. Good luck bro. I bet youll like and be real good at it if atick wit it....i can tell. :)

    I'm not impressed , you had a beautiful plant to start with and you hacked it because of shelf space? 😵
