Royal Enfield Classic 500 2-UP - Old v New - plus breaking news

- No trip to Haywards of Cambridge necessary to try this Royal Enfield 2-up. This time it is my very own Royal Enfield Classic 500, Bertie. Although I have had him a year, Mrs TAYM has never been on the back of him. I don’t know why but I had thought that he would not perform as well as the more modern Royal Enfields with a pillion on. I had hoped it would not go well just so there would be no objections to me removing the back seat so that I can replace it with a rack. I was also keen to see if Bertie could topple the Classic 350 and Himalayan?

I started to watch this because I was interested in the 500's ability with a pillion. However I found the most interesting part was the memorial. I've seen plenty of similar silhouettes - yet never one for every fallen soldier in a small village. This is perhaps the most moving and profound memorial I have ever seen to them - and it brings home the sheer scale of the loss. Thankyou for showing this.
Thank you. I found it very moving, almost as if those poor young men who lost their lives where there with me. At the time the village would have been much smaller, it must have accounted for half the male population. Very sad to think about it.
@@TAYM That was the very same feeling I got while viewing the video - surrounded by the ghosts of the past. Incidentally I did look up the census data - in 1911 the population of the whole parish was 828 - and the village would have been fewer as there were a number of hamlets - my guess is that most families in the village would have lost someone.
@@Bob-us9di wow, that’s terrible, poor families. 😞
@@TAYM I have a pretty good idea of the impact. My great uncle died from artillery fire France in 1917 - his body was never recovered although his name appears on the memorial there. My grandmother kept a photo of him, her little brother, on her bedside all of her life until she died in the mid-70s - yet never revealed who it was to her two sons - just couldn't talk about it. I found a photo of him as best man (he being my grandfathers best friend - they signed up together).at my grandparents wedding in 1915. My father recognised him - only then, aged 80, did he fully comprehend the loss to both his parents. This is the legacy of WWI - similar stories must abound by the many thousands - people who buttoned up their feelings and experiences for many, many years - nursing private sorrows. So yes - we must remember.
@@Bob-us9di we must and will though I worry about the younger generations understanding of the enormity of it. Thank you for your comments and own memories 😊
The RE never fails to deliver 👍and a nice Remembrance Day tribute 🎖 Well done sir.
Thank you, he doesn’t 😊😂😂
Nice try on getting Paddington in the stable. Worth a try! Took a walk outside today with a bow as I took karate 🥋 years ago. Thank you for sending out your energy to my healing along with RR! It is up to myself to recover as I see as a health professional. Another note, glad stopped by and paid respect to one who did there job and did not get to continue with this thing called life. You are the best channel on youtube. Most inspirational to explore someone on another piece of land that I only wish I was your next-door neighbor. Thank you!
That’s a very kind comment, thank you 😊
Whoever came up with the idea for that tribute in the village deserves a pat on the back.
You also filmed it at just the right moment as well.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.
On a lighter note though, don't you just love how women can instantly guilt trip us men when we suggest something that's going to exclude them!?
"Oh that's fine if you don't want a cuddle from me and you'd rather have him all to yourself"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
She played a blinder didn’t she and got her own back by rejecting Paddington 😂😂😂 very subtle 😕
What is not to like about Bertie. Very powerful lest we forget.
Very true 😊
The filming of the silhouettes at that time of day with the sun just about gone was perfect , nice words well said . 👍
Thank you 😊 I had wanted to do it on the Friday in the fog but it was too foggy.
Though this video was about the two-up experience (which was excellent by the way) I have to agree with the previous comments that that was indeed a wonderful memorial. 👍
Thank you 😊 I did consider separating the two but it just all felt right. I don’t know why. I think because My grandfather was in the signals and died, after serving in Europe was shipped out to the east, in Burma. Just one of the forgotten. 😊
Good morning mr & mrs TAYM Bertie proved himself that’s a lovely village with the remembrance soldiers 👍👍🙏
Morning Derek, it is a nice little village but like all others, growing 😂😂
@@TAYM they all this day and age you start seeing townie houses being put up everywhere spoils the feeling of an old English village 👍👍🙏
@@SOLOMOTOUK it does 😕
Thank you for showing the memorial. So sorry my comrades from the USMC weren’t able to help until 1917. Some of us remember, thank you.
We have a couple of USAF bases close by who also do tributes to the fallen. Always happy to see them helping protect the skies over Europe, as they have done for the past hundred years 😊 Terrible to lose your own but even worse to lose them fighting someone else’s war. So thank you for your lost loved ones, food, equipment, weapons, and support. We would have been a bit stuck without it. 😊
@@TAYM thank you and yours for holding off the menace of fascism, standing alone against all odds, showing us what courage a great nation can have. My father served 20 years in the USAF, my brother was Army, my Grandfather was Navy, and I served in the Marine Corps. We all felt like it was our greatest privilege to help do our part.
@@ericweber1969 let’s hope none of us have to do our part in the Ukraine
Wouldn’t of thought for a moment that Mrs TAYM wouldn’t have loved it on Bertie and as you said it only takes a moment to put the seat back on 👍 thanks for keeping the manurial on, so many lost from such a small village.
Very true, there may be a compromise there to be had 🤔😂😂😂 incredible isn’t it, it must have half the male population, very sad
Hi Mr and Mrs TAYM, pleasing to hear Mrs TAYM is a fan of Bertie and indeed who wouldn't be,The memorial was very moving especially so in the setting sun .Lest We Forget!
Thank You 😊
Shame on you Mr TAYM, how could you have doubted Bertie. Uncle Stu says they are the Perfect Gentleman’s Tourer. I think Bertie was just being a perfect gentleman as he had a lady on board. He wasn’t going to get out performed by Paddington.
Great video, and a very poignant memorial to a generation we should never forget or take for granted.
Thank you. I know how could I 😞 😂😂
Thanks for thinking of me Mr TAYM.
That looks like the spot you parked up in on the V7 850?
Out of Moon boots & been on crutches for 2weeks & progressed to a walking stick & bare feet round home & walking stick & sneakers outside last 3days.Still saw & back between shoulder blades where I broke discs still saw & can flare up.
A long way to go & is still early days of my recovery.I feel for I.T & HIS back injury those guys do a fantastic job moving & sliding & saving people like me around.
Pleased to hear you are still going in the right direction though, even if slowly. Thanks 😊
mannn... not just a machine its an emotion ❤️
😊 a lot of emotion 😊😂😂
Absolutely marvellous 2UP Mr T 😁 I could just tell that Bertie and your good self, were smiling all the way there 😊 You have definitely found your ultimate bike in him. No need to look elsewhere. Anything else that comes along would just be a nice addition to your stable or, of course, another 500 or Paddington especially for 2UP... work on that 😁
I think you might be right😊 the problem is I won’t know until I’ve tried everything😊 I didn’t realise this when I set myself this little quest😊 honest 😊😊
@@TAYM Hehe, nothing to stop you trying all the other bikes out there. We enjoy watching you try them out too, so everyone is happy! 😊 Keep up the not really needed but why not keep going quest 😂👍
@@DoomNedwob 😂😂😂😂
Nice one Mr and Mrs TAYM, Bertie just gets on with it, what a great way of honouring those young lads who gave it all for the generations that followed....
Thank you 😊 what struck me was how many died from such a small village, which at the time would have been even smaller. Very sad
I have the same model, but have never ridden it two up. My Wife last rode pillion with me in 1967, but I live in hope.
According to Mrs TAYM she will love it 😊
Hi Mr and Mrs Taym, another great video, very sad near the end, true we must never forget.
Thanks David 😁 yes, almost that time of year again 🤔
Fantastic video and tribute to all the old soldiers on the perfect motorcycle. ❤️👍🇬🇧🏍🙏
Thank you 😊
Brought a tear to my eye, nice one Tayms
Mine too, thank you 😊
Another great video an excellent tribute to the fallen. You can't blame Bertie for doing 35 in a 30 limit it's the person on the throttle.
Thank you 😊 I think that was the car but on any account I recall sharing the blame and said ‘we’ 😂😂😂😂
Marvellous video , very symbolic that memorial, very sad, my English grandfather died in the war also, he was on the HMS ACASTA , sunk by the Germans.
On a lighter note, yes put the rack on Bertie and next year get a Super Meteor 650 with a pillion seat, they look super comfy for Mrs Taym 😊😂
Marvellous idea 😊😂😂😂😂 thank you 😊
I thought Mrs TAYM looked a bit cold at the start, I know she may be a bit of a fashionista but you really need to get her some warm gear with proper protection. I think she was a little bit hurt too when she realised you wanted to ride Bertie and leave her behind. No wonder she gave you the short sharp shift when you mentioned adding Paddington to the stable. Your going to have to really float her boat with something special now to add to the stable.
That was indeed a touching memorial at the end, not only was each lost soul remembered but the height of the silhouettes served to remind us that most were barely adults. What I will definitely never forget is the lack of respect afforded to our fallen the past two years. Two years ago you'd be arrested for attending a memorial. Last year they chose 11/11 to sack all the care workers who would be looking after the survivors, for not having the imaginary protection.
Choosing that day was as evil as it gets, but then they planned to top that by sacking 100,000 nurses on April fools day. Now every day hundreds of "young men of fighting age" are being ferried across the channel. One has to wonder who exactly do they plan for them to fight against and in what manner is this paying respect to those who gave their lives to protect all that is British?
Mrs TAYM doesn’t feel the cold, apparently, and has all the appropriate protective gear at hand. On most occasions she does as she is requested to do but occasionally she doesn’t. 😊 there are some terrible things occur in the world and some terrible decisions, that is for sure.
Hats off to you both!
Thank you 😊
beautiful video as we are used to 😉 I also removed the pillion seat from my classic chrome 500 ... it's nice ... really a retro look now 😉
But Mrs TAYM’s reaction to that wasn’t good 🤔😂😂😂
@@TAYM
So was Mrs Geeraerts's reaction 😂 !
@@hughgeeraerts738 😂😂😂
Awesome video m8. Bertie sounded marvelous and sounded like he was keen to keep thumping away all night. Mrs TAYM,s no to another bike sounded serious 😳 😆😅🤣. It's only a 10 min job to swap out for seat so not all bad. He'll look outstanding with bags and rack. To everyone who have served for our freedoms. Thank you 🙏
Thank you, he did sound splendiferous didnt he, definitely out to impress Mrs TAYM I think, and it worked. She didnt understand it but now she does 😊
Loved the love for all
😊 😂😂
Excellent as always 😎😎😎
Thank you 😊
Keep the wife happy. I think seat looks fine anyway. Only thing is it covers the nice paint lining but at the same time think without the seat the lines of the bike are not as pleasing. The clincher though is rather take mrs than look at pinstripes 😁👍❤
😂😂😂😂 marvellous and of course right 😊
Marvellous what ?.I feel like Im back on Arthur that wonderful round dash with the back light its so beautiful., the more weight you pile on them, the more they like it I reckon.
😂😂😂😂
Bertie may well be the answer to the question of the meaning of life, the universe and everything; or it could be Paddington 😁😁. The silhouettes were very evocative; I like that kind of art.
I think he might be 😊😂😂😂 thank you 😊
Cracking video, yes they’re a great bike and makes it hard to chose between the two bikes if anyone buys one !
I know how good they are ! The 500 is a good pulling bike for sure 😊it will look better with the rear seat off and you’re panniers and rack
How mine was 😮
What a lovely tribute in that village to the fallen soldiers.. lovely that is 😊😊
Love the fact that you think that Birtie is the 2nd best thing apart from Mrs Taym!
Great stuff 😊😊😊
Thank you 😊
This is so funny, my concern is if the good lady likes it I have to leave the back seat on. Of all the bikes I have had I really love my RE 500
😂😂 me too 😂😂
I had a classic 500 the same as yours. Same colour but mine was a 2016. It had a drum rear brake. I do miss it. I do love my meteor 350 and the classic 350 but there is something about the classic 500 but I still have the continental 535GT which has that old overhead valve engine, which I love I’ve had for seven years never sell it
Another enjoyable video 👍
Marvellous bike the 535GT, very jealous. Thank you 😊
@@TAYM yes something about that bike that I can’t part with it
@@henrysmith5604 they become family members 😊
@@TAYM I think you right 😊🏍️
Another great video!!!
Thank you 😊
I'm enjoying these 2up videos and what a gorgeous model you have helping you. Svelte lines, beautiful curves, and the Mrs isn't bad either. 👍
😂😂😂I know, I am a lucky man ...... but not alone, they made thousands of these classics 😊
pooooor padington 😭 - evening squire, good old Bertie. Despite the difference in casualties there is something far more emotional about WW1, the utter waste of life, the enthusiasm with which many went to their deaths - lest we forget 🏵
A lot of very bad decisions I think. Summed up very well in the film, o what a lovely war. Very sad
Marvellous vlog! In which village is the castle and memorial garden?
Thanks Eric 😊 it’s in Haughley near Stowmarket, Suffolk
@@TAYM Thank you👍🏼😃
Very poignant reminder nice to see !!! and a lot of folks from that village died and yet today it still happens what the hell is that about . Very enjoyable watch gotta ask why it is necessary to take the seat of for a rack ? it is a really nice looking bike as are most all of the Royal Enfield's I think that Mrs Taym is going to miss out not getting on the bike really 😉👌👍
Very difficult to understand how we let it still happen isn’t. The rack I had given goes in place of the seat. I have a feeling Mrs TAYM will get her own way, least some of the time 😊😂😂😂
Very poignant and moving Remembrance day imagery.
It must be very pleasing that Mrs TAYM now really understands why you got Bertie and that she wants to share the experience with you. Well worth putting the seat back on when required. Good luck with Plan B and Paddington though.
Yes, both good and evil 😂😂😂 I also have a plan c, d and e 😂😂😂
Oooo, Paddington can stay where he is 😮 😅
I know right, piff 😕 we’ll see about that 😂😂😂😂 she was clearly rebelling against the idea of me removing the back seat 😂😂
@@TAYM 😂
🙏 nice video. Thank you.
Ride Safe 🙏🏼
Thank you 😊
It's a wet old greasy day today,. Get Mrs TAYM some riding boot,s
She has all the gear in various styles but on occasion decides not to use it 🙄
Get her to put some on ,or take the seat off ha,ha, stay safe.
2 up should be no problem for Bertie, in India they carry the whole family and a week’s shopping, don’t they… 🙂
I passed the remembrance tribute in Haughley last weekend, it looked fantastic. 🙏
Thanks Stu 😊 must have a ride out with the mars bar kid if you are still on the road? 😊
@@TAYM That would be great...
@@anvil259 I will get hold of MBK and let you know 😊
I see your clock on the brake reservoir but I will send you a pic of something nice to mount a clock an a 22.2mm diameter handlebar.
Marvellous 😊
Suspension on 500 is definitely better than 350. Better for a pillion with the torque too. Obviously not as smooth. 👍
Yes, really surprised me😊
Bonjours et bravo! 👏👍✌🇫🇷
Thank you 😊
😉
😂😂
My opinion, take the seat off. You have others in your stable to ride with her on the back.
😊
