  • In this video, I go right back to the start to look at the absolute basics. Today, we'll look at the fundamentals - the properties of watercolour and how it behaves. It's the first in a six-part series for those of you starting off painting watercolor landscapes, but those of you with more experience should keep an eye on the basics too... they're vitally important and often overlooked.
As always, thank you for supporting the channel.

Brilliant tutorial Oliver, as usual. After doing watercolour painting for a couple of years I have lost motivation for it over the last year but your tutorials are giving me the zest again to keep going. Just have to not watch you late at night as your soothing voice always sends me to sleep and then I have to watch you again next morning! I think you are by far the best teacher on RUclips.

I have fallen in love with this watercolor teacher. I've been painting in various mediums over my long lifetime. Watercolor is my favorite painting medium. I wish I could have started my art lessons with tutorials with Oliver Pyle. Although, I'm grateful I'm able to watch him share his knowledge at this time to keep me interested in painting more. In life, you never stop learning with teachers like Oliver.

Finally! I have painted with water-soluble oils and also acrylics for a number of years. Now that I'm retired, I have been experimenting more - and although I have watched several other water colourists, your style is much closer to how I want to paint. Even though I sometimes enjoy just splashing colour around to see what happens, I enjoy realism the most - and your work is the first I have discovered on RUclips that 'speaks' to me in watercolour language. I have only watched about 3 of your videos so far and am delighted to see there are many more to choose from. I am so glad I found your work. Your teaching skills are as effective and inspiring as your finished works. Thank you!

I started painting watercolour very recently and went in blind with a small watercolour set and pad. I did a few ‘paintings’ then came across your channel and your tips videos. Even after my first watch of one of your videos my paintings have vastly improved! And each video I watch provides massive insight and helps so much. Thank you for these videos, they’re great!. I also love that many of your landscapes are in Dorset, which coincidentally was where I bought my watercolour set on holiday a few weeks ago. It’s such a beautiful place and I aim to be able to capture its beauty on paper too.

I am learning so much from your videos. Painting light to dark is totally new for me. I am 64 and just started painting 4 years ago in acrylics, then oils. It feels much like going from my experience as a water skier where I lean back on my skies to snow skiing where I lean forward. It is definitely foreign and one I will have to practice, practice, practice. Your calming voice and patient style is inviting and encouraging. I was just commissioned for a watercolor last week and started with a tree (from your tutorials) which got nearly 200 likes on FB thanks to you! Your teaching is getting me there. Thank you so much! I have shared your YT channel and FB page with friends and family.

I’ve been painting in acrylic and decided to try watercolour a year and change ago. Small very limited palette aimed at portability and small studies to start. I think I have absorbed as much as I can so time to hit the paper and put these accumulated theories to work.

Bravo! I've been painting a few years, learning the hard way! I could have progressed much faster if I watched your videos. Thank you.

Thanks so much for showing basics. I really like that you showed the mistakes. I started watercolor last year when my dad died. I love painting landscapes so I discovered your channel and it has been a really big help. Please keep it up your doing amazingly. Have a blessed day😀

Thank you Oliver. This was really helpful for someone like me who has just started water colour painting. All I've done so far is have a go at Negative painting using random ideas from my head to try to get started but I have yet to paint anything real!!! I look forward to the next video.
