Justin, Thanks for your help on this, I love my Kamado Joe Classic (2017) edition and I think it is perfect size wise for my wife and I (Having a few friends over and I definitely see why a bigger grill would help depending on what you are making). Here are my pros and cons to supplement your list Pros: - I have been grilling for over 20 years but being able to set the temp and rely on the fact it stays steady is unreal! - The ash bucket is brilliant - Being able to shut down the airflow to reuse the charcoal is unreal - Getting the grill up to temp is surprisingly fast (compared to an offset smoker) - The fact that you can get the grill hot enough to self clean is brilliant (thinking of bringing my cast iron pans in for a deep clean) Cons: - The only significant downside that I have come across is the top vent seems to get gunked up with regular use and requires regular cleaning to keep it from sticking. Recommended add-on: The JoeTisserie is phenomenal, I wasn't sure how much I would like a rotisserie without an infrared heat source, but being able to add a light smoke flavour (British spelling) at the same time as getting the self baste of the rotisserie has reset the mark! Man, thank you so much. your videos are amusing, getting the other youtubers and manufacturers together for helpful tips and tricks is great and I've definitely improved my outputs accordingly. The grill has officially been inaugurated - Ribs: check - smoked pulled pork: check - single rib boneless Ribeye ~2 1/2" (reverse seared): check - Rotisseried and smoked chicken (two even): check - Rotisseried and smoked pork belly (that's right, rotisseried and smoked then seared skin): check and highly recommended - Super low beef jerky: check (reminds me of the old beef jerky from when I was a kid in Wyoming) - Smoked salmon: check - Crispy skin chicken: check (I need to work on this one more) - Pizza is on the list of to do's Thanks again, subscription must!
I bought my Kamado Joe in 2006 and have never had a problem with cracking of any ceramic parts. The only way that opening the lid would bother anyone is if they had a defective shoulder joint caused by an injury My 110 lb wife can do anything and everything on our KJoe. It's a great product with excellent customer service.
Great feedback. Keep in mind, though that I'm not making up these changes...you can see them in the video. Why would kamado joe redesign their entire hinge assembly and firebox if the older styles were perfect already? Also, check out some of T-roy and Beer and BBQ with Larry's videos and you can see the issues they had with the hinge. From personal experience I can tell you that I've owned 3 kamado joes before this and the were all great products but each one without fail had the firebox crack until this one...and KJ replaced them all immediately. My inclination is redesigning the firebox was a self defense move since they are on the hook for it.
Great review ! Definitely a game changer in comparing ceramic grills. I agree with kick ash basket, easy clean up, better temp control and I like loading lump and wood chunks outside of cooker. Keep up the great videos!
Hey Guapo, I think KJ is definitely onto something. The kick ash is really nice. I never thought about loading outside the cooker...I bet that keeps all the fines and dust of the way. Great top. I feel like it saves me a ton of time between cooks as well. Wish I would have thought of it. lol. Thanks for watching, Justin
Excellent review Justin! Wow, Kamado Joe has came a long way with improvements! This thing is a beast! Can't wait to see it in action. I about busted a gut laughing, when I saw my mug on that dollar bill!!!! Dude, you are such a natural at this! I know I've said that before, but seriously, you got some awesome talent!
Thanks, man. You have said that before. In fact you said it after one of my first few videos and it meant the world to me at the time. I figure the least I could do was give you a little chuckle.
I have the regular sized 2017 Kamado Joe and absolutely love it, my three other smokers are mostly gathering dust to be honest. Just wish it was a tad larger, can only do briskets up to about 12 pounds with some careful maneuvering on the grate. Big Joe looks awesome!
If you turn the vent cap on the BGE so the "Big Green Egg" letters are sitting on the backside of the grill, there's no "flippy flippy". There's a small protruding piece of cast on the vent adjustment that prevents the adjustment plate from flipping outwards that way when it's properly aligned. Just FYI. Great review!
Just grabbed a 22" weber smokey mountain yesterday, and they had a 2xl big Green egg that caught my eye. The size is awesome, but it seems like the kamado Joe's are just far more user friendly and that divide and conquer system is awesome. Looking like the big how is the one to get; someday...
Thank you for a great review. I think this video was one of the reasons I bought my Kamado Joe BJ a year ago. Now it plays a major part in my videos. Love your stuff.
Justin, great review as always! I'm not much a fan of the ceramic cooking devices, but thanks for the Kamado Joe review. I am, however, a huge fan of Weber. So definitely looking forward to your one year review of the WSC. I really appreciate what you bring to the smoking community in terms of these videos. Don't stop bro!
Thanks Derrick, I like theses kamados but I'm a Weber fan too. I get it. If a tornado took all my grills tomorrow, the first one I would buy back would be my 26 kettle. (though I still call it the 26.75 because that's what it used to be called.) Lots of folks are asking for the review of the summit so I'm definitely going to do that one. Thanks for watching, man. I really appreciate it. Justin
Would love to see a one-year review of the WSCG, but really looking forward to some cooks on the Kamado Joe. I'm trying to decide whether or not I have to have one of those two grills, so some comparison between the big KJ and the WSCG would be wonderful.
Great review. Few years I ago cheaply dipped my toes in the Kamado water with cheap char-griller Kamado for $225. After five years showing its age (who knew?) And been looking to upgrade. My wife thinks I'm nuts of course, my food isn't going to be drastically better, but they're fun toys. Fun how you interact with other RUclipsrs or whatever you're called. Nice you have wife that tolerates your many grills, mine looks over my shoulder reading reviews and sighs.
LOL. My wife did too, but now that the youtube thing is taking off she's not as strict on me as she used to be. lol. The Akorn is a great starter Kamado. 5 years is about right. I have a friend who bought one that needs work after 2 years. He lives near the ocean though. One thing to keep in mind is a lot of the replacement parts can be bough fairly cheaply from Chargriller. For example, I think it was $45 bucks for the entire lower ash assembly when I checked a couple years ago. That's not as fun as a new grill, of course, but if you want to buy some time while your deciding what to get next, it's an option. Justin
A possible solution for the fire box divider. Use some threaded rod long enough to stick through the charcoal grate, and it should hold the divider upright without needing to be bolted to the grate.
Hey great stuff. Just found your channel today actually while going through some of T-roys stuff. You seem really genuine and honest about what you're doing and that's a great thing! Really enjoy your stuff.
Thanks Bud, I've been burned in the past by people who didn't disclose everything and it was very frustrating to me so I try to be as open as possible. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the kind words. Justin
Nice review, and great to see the new hinge. My old school Bog Joe hinge needs adjusting every 6 weeks or so as it starts to "sag", even with adjustng it has caught me out twice.
Hey Spence, Thanks for the feedback. When you say "sag" what you do you mean? I want to know what I need to be keeping an eye out for. Thanks in advance, Justin
Hey Justin, sorry for any confusion. The "sag" is on the original hinges with the spring tension system. If i adjust the lid so that it stays fully open then within around 6 weeks i will notice that the lid from fully open will drop a little, say 1/4 -1 /2 an inch, not fully shut but just drop a little, However, if i do not re-tension at that point within another week or so it will drop on its own, that has happened twice. I have now set a monthly reminder to re-tension the springs. From what i read not all Big Joe spring hinges need this regular adjustment it seems to have been a batch issue.
Yes nothing bad to say about their customer service. I actually had a spare hinge assembly as KJ sent me one with a replacement base, which arrived damaged from the dealer. Both the original and the replacement hinges had the same issue. Rather than ask for a third i was looking around to see if i could get an uprated spring set. I think KJ have now said a version of the air hinge may retrofit to the older model so i might just buy that. I'll wait to see how folks like yourself get on with the new hinge first.
That's pretty smart before you spend more money. Feel free to hit me up in a few months here or on Facebook (remind me of this conversation) and i'll let you know; however, if my lid sags, I'll definitely talk about it in a video. It just may take me a while to get to it.
The only thing that made me cringe in the video was the fiberglass gasket. I had one on my Broil King Keg. It leaked like crazy after about 10 to 20 cooks. It drove me nuts!! I ended up replacing it with a gold old fashioned felt gasket. In me experience they hold up much better. Now the KJ gaskets may be much better quality but I will be curious to see how this one lasts. However, It would not stop me from getting a new KJ.I love that new top damper, the ash catcher, the pedal firebox, and the air assist lid. These are all awesome improvements. Great video Justin. Thanks for the unboxing! And also a big Rog, for the Summit one-year review.
Hey John, You know what's interesting? I have had the exact opposite experience with those types of gaskets. The one on my Summit leaks but I think it's actually because of the way the lid closes on it...the gasket itself is in good shape. But my keg and akorn both did great with them and the felt one fell off within 10 cooks on my BGE. I guess it's just one of those luck of the draw things. I'll try to remember to report back how this one holds up over time. I sure hope it does well...would be a pain to replace. Justin
They did a large amount of cooking when testing the new gasket with zero issues. I doubt those other gaskets were developed in conjunction with the same American made gasket company. Davlyn oven gaskets. Should be great quality..........I hope.
Stephen Hickey That's really good to know, Stephen. I've been "better gasketed" so many times that I admit, I just sorta keep my expectations down. 900 testing cooks sounds very promising though.
Man, your initial review of the Summit was what got me onto your channel to begin with, of course I want to see a year follow-up! And maybe one day I'll have more money than sense so that I can bring myself to pull the trigger on one.
Thanks for the feedback, Chris. For what it's worth, I sincerely hope that some day you have more money than sense. (Why does that sound weird to me? lol) Justin
Great review Justin. That is one thing I do love about Kamado Joe, they are constantly innovating and upgrading their cookers. Those improvements you highlighted are game changers. Can't wait to see how well it cooks. I loved the SmokeyRibs buck you used.
Yeah, Tom, I totally agree. They seem to be always working to improve which is nice to see. It also pushes the other manufacturers to keep improving as well. Great for all of us as consumers. We have options.
They do a decent job of taking what others have done and improving on those ideas (smoke ware cap, joe blower, and the weber summit gasket). Weber summit vs Big Joe PLZ! oh, love your videos!
I totally agree. Also, the hinge seems to be inspired by komodo kamado and the divide and conquer from Primo...but heres the thing I like. They are looking to solve problems. I really like that. Every thing they do is a solution to a problem or limitation that other people were not able or willing to do on their cookers. They will do well if they keep at it. Justin
It's a nice cooker. I've had some issues with the top though. You might want to look into that before you buy it. I now they are planning on coming out with a fix soon. (It leaks liquid down the back of the cooker and the paint has been pealing off for some people.) I'd hold off till they get that lined out but other than that it's great. Justin
I won't be buying until I get back from my Trip to America in October so hopefully that sorts that issue out before I buy(I live in Australia). There are a few others I have been looking at the Weber has always been a family favourite, I just am looking at the ceramic firebox. I had a look for your Weber here and doesn't appear they have many stockists here. It's still pending approval?(Not 100% sure). A mate of mine has a Primo XL and he loves it but they're about the same price as the Big Joe here.($2295AUD)
Thanks, Sal. Yeah, it sure looks that way. Hopefully that will prove to be the case. Only time will tell for sure but it's looking really good here at the starting line. Take care, Justin
Hi Steve, I know, right?!? What's all this screwing around with a perfectly clean cooker? Time to get some meat on there!!! lol. Thanks for watching. Justin
+Baby Back Maniac - Congrats on your success on RUclips! a guest appearance on T-Roy's show, 2 channels of your own, free grills......you are a rising star!! Keep up the good work & smoke on....
I own several grills myself and have been thinking about downsizing to maybe the "one" to rule them all. Internally in my brain though I have been protesting the price of the Summit with the table.
Hey Pete, Tough decision. For what it's worth, if I had to pick just one, it would be the Summit...but ONLY if it had the cart. The cart and all the features that come with it are what puts it over the top in the "if I could only have one" category. The KJBJ would probably be my second choice it could also be (this might be surprising since it's so much cheaper) but it would be the 26 inch kettle with a Slow 'N Sear. I could live with any of those and be happy with them. Let me know what you end up deciding. I'm curious. lol.
Justin, another excellent review. I wish you would mention the warranties of both cookers. I would love to see how the Joe held up after a year of use. Thanks brother! Keep em coming.
Yeah, it gets tricky there because there are so many factors to way in. I could do a whole video on warranties and still not cover it all. You have the actually warranties, what they cover, what they don't, exceptions (both good and bad), logistics, availability of parts, customer service interactions, etc... It just got to be too much. Justin
Hi Tim, Yeah, it's compelling, isn't it? I was a BGE owner when i first saw the KJ and I think that's what made me attracted to it. They seemed to get what worked about the BGE and fixed some of the little annoyances. There are a ton of other stuff that I couldn't put in the video because it bogged it down. Bigger therms, stronger stand, removable side tables that won't stain or fade, yada, yada, yada. Thanks for watching. Justin.
Man, I sure do enjoy your humor Justin. Great job on the review brother!!! They sure have changed the guts of the Big Joe since I got mine. I look forward to seeing you fire it up and cooking on it!!! Maybe I will swing by and cheer you on? LOL Cheers brother!
Absolutely! That would be a blast...except for Fifi but she can come too. By the way, I talked to my folks last weekend and my mom was like "Fifi really didn't like you, huh?" They thought it was hysterical. It's funny but I think they actually watched your video and then didn't watch mine. Which is crazy for them. My dad's the type of guy who is so excited about this he checks my subscriber count 3 times a day and calls when I hit a milestone. lol. It's cute...and weird that they totally missed an entire video. Yeah they really did change up the KJBJ this year. It looks really promising. What I like about these changes are they aren't just changes for change sake. They seem to really be trying to solve some of the problems and limitation of ceramic grills and I admire that. I hope everything works as planned. Sometimes the proof is in the pudding.
Yeah man, my Mom does the same thing always letting me know when I hit a milestone on my channel. Too funny!!! I think I will leave Fifi when I visit you. And I just found out that my last day at work will be May 12th, so I will have time to travel this Summer!!! I'm looking forward to an early retirement!!!
That's great, man! Good to have some finality to everything. I have this sneaky feeling your "youtube retirement" is going to end up being busier than when you were working, but it will be cool to see what this next phase is. I know I've said this before but I really do have a guest room you are welcome to use (though I'm not pushy if you have someplace else you'd rather stay) It would be a lot of fun having you over here for a video. If you know anybody else around here you think would want to collaborate, they can come too. I actually don't know anybody else doing this in Dallas.
I think in the next few years I’m going to get a kamado joe. It appears I can use kingsford briquettes. I have over 600 pounds of charcoal in my basement, all purchased at Lowe’s/HD at $9.98 for 2x 18.6 lb bags.
Ah HA! The cost of one Bad Beast BBQ/Baby Back Maniac tee shirt is one SmokyRibs dollar. I need to get busy and print a few... Wait, that's called counterfitting, isn't it? And it's still illegal too, isn't it? What an amazing komado, Justin! Can't wait to see what magic you create with it. This video is so good, that I'm binge-watching it from all of my channels!
LOL. Thanks buddy. I'll take all the views I can get. Though I gotta admit, I'm a little shocked how fast this one has come out of the gate. Maybe everybody is watching it from all of their channels?!? I should send everyone a thank you note. lol. Thanks for your support, Dan. Justin
Hey Justin, I think a 1 year of ownership on the Summit would be a great video. It's nice to see the initial reaction video and bookend with another later on.
Hi Kurt, Yeah, I think I'm going to do that video. Everybody is asking for it and I want to do it so it's a win all the way around. The problem I have with videos like this is there is SO much to say and I have this internal timer than goes off in my head when things go on too long (and just thinking about a Summit review makes it go off. lol) Thanks for watching, Justin
Thanks Justin , I'm thinking of ditching the Genesis Gold C and Smokey Mountain and getting a ..... something. I still have my two Webber portables so if I did buy a non Webber I wouldn't feel hollow and empty inside 😉
LOL. I used to have the Silver C and I really liked it. Had to sell it in a move because it was Nat gas and we aren't plummet for that here. sniff. We have a propane never Genesis and it's probably better, but not the same. Justin
We watch RUclips videos in den on smart big screen tv. Showed your videos and everyone all the others to the family. They love watching. You are #1 on the list. Can you love BBQ too much was their favorite. Your video editing is killer. We have laughed a lot. Oh, by the way, your food is great too. I'm seeing now anyone can shoot video, but the biggest part of success is in editing what you shoot for presentation, entertainment, and educational value. Everyone brings something different. Some are technically spot on and serious, while others are down right hilarious. We want and need all of it. Keeps it from being boring. As HMB at Heavy Metal BBQ would say "Smoke On"
Thanks Phil, Editing is the most important part, I'm learning. You have to have good content...and then you have to be willing to cut good content when it doesn't fit. I think that's one of the bigger mistakes you tubers make. They leave in stuff that is unnecessary or irrelevant because it's something they feel like they need to say instead of sticking to the main theme of the story (or they don't realize they are telling a story.)
yep yep yep. You just keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep doing what I'm doing, which is trying to copy you and Russ and all the others. That is when I figure out how. LOL. Hey, I see your subs are beginning to be exponential. About to hit the 10k mark. Thats great. Your channel is about to soar. Good Luck and keepem comin.
nice innovations! I always thought the gaskets sucked and told them so. The lid weight was an issue too especially with many women in the family. I have been a Costco roadshow rep for KM, so I foresee better sales coming up now. Fabian
Hi Fabian, Yeah, the lid weight was the worst thing about it for me. What they have done here is really cool. The gaskets seem solid too. Like I said in the video, I've heard that before so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Justin
Of the Kamado's type grills I like the Kamado Joe, the big reason I like the cart I feel it is much better design and won't get wobbley and not tip over. My neighbor tipped over a large Green Egg and broke it. I was wondering if Costco is selling these on the road shows.
Hi Jim, I agree with you on the cart. I almost dropped a big green egg once too. It was a medium though. It was so a smart thing to do for KJ to make a sturdy cart that isn't tippy and doesn't take an hour to put together. Why they don't all do that is beyond me! Justin
Hey Justin! I'd love to see some videos about keeping grills clean and general grill maintenance! Your grills look so clean in every video, what kind of maintenance do you do on them? Do you ever worry about having to do a big deep clean on the kamados, or do you have any tricks for the tough spots where carbon and cooking grease can build up?
LOL. It's funny because I get this question a lot. Honestly, my "secret" if you want to all it that is I usually take a dish towel out every time I cook and whatever grill I'm working on gets wiped down so they never get THAT dirty. Then if I'm going to use a grill in a video, I hit it with windex. I'm not really OCD in any other area of my life but I like to keep my grill stuff relatively clean. Justin
Think you're being a bit picky with the top air vent being flippy flippy on the old classic... Have the retaining screw facing you, no flippy flippy ....ever. Great review of the new version...want one just for the new hinge
I never made that out to be a big deal. I just made it out to be something that was an improvement. Sometimes people get so used to using their products they don't even realize they're doing a workaround to how it was intended to function. It's like learning to drive a car that doesn't have third gear. After a few years, you may forget you don't have it because the car doesn't "Need it" but that's not how it was supposed to run. So this is just a fun way of drawing attention to the improvement. And that's what this was, more about the improvement then the "problem" (which I agree isn't a huge deal.)
The hinge is great. The gasket is incredible, the firebox hasn't cracked but I never take it out because I don't want to piece it back together. lol. The top vent I was so excited about was a complete failure and some of the "stainless steel" hardware rusted. All in all, it's fine.
I want one of those shirts lol. Thanks for all the reviews and how too’s. There are tones of the same things all over youtube but yours are fun and interesting to watch.
I have a BGE and I was looking to buy another one to keep where I work (I live and work in two different states) and never questioned the possibility of buying any other grill than a BGE, but this video has convinced me I need to check the Kamado Joe out. Two questions...1) Do you know of any vendors in North Dakota? 2) In the event of a component of the multi-piece firebox failing/cracking, are they individual parts replaceable or do you have to buy a whole new ring with all of the pieces? First time viewer of your videos...I'm really liking them. Thanks!
Hey, They have a dealer finder on their website...but the best deal is the Costco Road show. Check out this video. ruclips.net/video/rFJlBgNqfyE/видео.html Its long but there is a table of contents where you can skip around. I talk about why I recommend the KJ over the Big green egg. As a Big Green Egg guy, you'll appreciate it. Justin
Nice! Getting a new Big Joe like that is awesome! My Big Joe is the 2015 model. It is lacking of all of those enhancements except the ash pan and D&C system. Mine even has the old bamboo shelves. It sure would be nice to get that new hinge and cap to replace the ones I have now. I'm a little wary of the new gasket. My old Akorn has something like that.
Hey Larry, You are the second person to mention the gasket. I never had any problems with mine...maybe I just didn't give it enough time to start acting up. Cool that you still have the bamboo. Mine didn't last a single summer. They rotted from the inside out. I still think they look slick though. I read on the internet that they will be selling the hinge as a retrofit. At first, I don't think that was the plan so I'm glad they were able to make it fit. Have a great weekend, my friend. Justin
Wait, that firebox divider has to be bolted at all times to use it? Does it not stay in place with just those stubs? I think the pre-2017 models worked with just setting it in there...was it unstable? Seems like a strange change.
The previous one sat in there fine because it rested on slots built in to the firebox. The problem with the old one was you could not pull it in or out without pulling out the fire ring (it didn't fit past it) so I never ended up using it. Technically you don't have to use the bolts, I guess. But it seems like there is a reason they put them there. It doesn't take much to tip it over. Like I said though, this is my first impressions. I'll give it a shot and report back what I think.
wow. I've been grilling on a green egg every sat and Sunday for the past 4 weekends for my staff, and really love it. ....this new KJ makes me question my love.
lol. Never question your love. BGE's are great grills. They just need to step up their game when it comes to some of these convenience features or they're competition is going to catch up to them. lol.
Great job as usual. Your humor and thoughtful observations make Baby Back Maniac one of my favorite channels. I would very much like to see a one-year review of the Summit. What is your opinion on the Summit's build quality and projected longevity after a year of hard use. Is it your favorite Kamado-style cooker? Keep up the great work :)
Hi Robin, Yeah, I want to do that review as well. It's definitely still my favorite. I LOVE the design and features. I feel like the built quality is perfectly adequate...and that's not code for "crappy but I'm dealing with it." I think Weber did exactly what they needed to do. No more or less. It's not showing any obvious signs of wear or rust and I don't think it will have any surprises any time soon. I really wish they would have done a few things differently (like not put one set of plastic wheels and one set of metal...or redesigned the lower vent so it's not EXACTLY like the kettles (with fake leg sockets and EVERYTHING) but all that was there when I bought it. I hope that makes sense. I really appreciate you watching and your kind words. Justin
Thanks Justin. I am working towards a decision on my next smoker, and your opinion on the Summit is the reason it is on my short list. I am trying to decide between: The Weber Summit Charcoal M Grills M1 Smoker Lone Star Grillz Vertical Offset Smoker Obviously the last two are primarily intended as stick burners and the Summit is intended for charcoal, but I love the versatility of all three. Thank you again for putting so much thought and hard work into your videos. I know you felt pulled towards creating a channel long before you took the plunge. It is clear that you were born to do this, and tremendous success is in your future. Have a great weekend. Robin
Thanks, Robin. It's weird because if you would have asked me 2 years ago, I would have told you this is the LAST thing I could see myself doing. I knew absolutely nothing about cameras, videography, editing, public speaking, or this side of youtube. The learning curve was straight up. I do feel like I have a bit of a knack for it, but I'm not sure why. Lone Star Grillz is about 3 hours from me. I went down to their facility a couple years ago to see what they had and met Chris and Amber. I would absolutely LOVE to have one of their offsets. I was looking at horizontals and not verticals but I can't imagine how anyone could be disappointed in a stick burner from them...if you are sure you want to deal with all the issues related to having a stick burner in the first place. The attention to detail is incredible and they are great people. I have not seen an M Grill in person but a guy I know from a forum has one and loves it. Sure looks like a solid cooker. Isn't it cool to have options!?!?
Great review, I just bought new big joe from costco. I have tried to smoke tri tip and one 40 mins into smoking at 250 noticed the chimney cap is leaking and that nasty leak was dropping on the ceramics. Also, the fire box being broken into six portions is not that much of a deal, I still prefer the cracked version. The ceramics quality...seems like BGE has better ceramic quality. I am seriously considering returning it to Costco and heading to BGE dealer. I know you are a Weber guy, went to check out the summit, man what happened between performer at $400 and summit at $2000. I do not want to pay $1,600 for hinge, metal heat deflector and a gas starter, otherwise they look identical.
They look identical in pictures but they really aren't in person. Weber clearly didn't do a good enough of a job distinguishing them though because I hear that just about every day. That's on them. lol. I had the same issues with my cap on my KJ (I talked about it in the next video...the one we are commenting on was an initial review of the new features). KJ is coming up with a replacement cap to stop the leaks. You should ask them about it. I don't know if BGE has better ceramic or not but even if they do, it's covered under warranty. There is still a lot more to like about the KJ. You'll figure that out if you switch. The only real reason to get a BGE is just because you want one more...which is a completely valid reason in my book. :-) Thanks for watching! Justin
Baby Back Maniac Don't know about one more. But KJ is about to be evacuated back to Costco. I gave it another chance yesterday to smoke tri tip at 225, low and slow. So, I went to get a nap only to find out in the morning that the KJ coals died on me and my tri tip just sitting there at 80 internal....and I am not a newbie at bbq. Yeah, I think we are over with KJ at this point. Changed my mind about BGE, turned around and got Primo Oval XL and am so excited to smoke some brisket on it when it arrives, the primo oval is just made for that-smoking oval shaped briskets lol:)
Great upgrades, I really like the new Hinge and Gasket. I have never used the Divider on mine, I like the new one but you are right about the bolt on thing, not good. Great Video Justin.
Thanks Lumpy, I would have used the divider more on my old one but the ceramic didn't fit between the fire ring...therefore I had to pull the whole grill apart to take it in and out which sorta defeated the purpose to begin with. This fits but has a similar drawback. I probably will do the Kick Ash thing at some point. It seems like the best work around. Then again, last time I found the Divide and conquer to work just fine. Justin
Always love your videos! Would the the charcoal trays from the Weber Summit Charcoal Grill fit in the Big Joe? If so. using the trays would be easier than messing with the firebox divider. I am fairly new to BBQing, and I really appreciate your videos. I am in the process of determining which cooker (Big Joe vs WSCG) to purchase and have found your reviews genuine and informative. I'm glad you overcame your pellet grill aversion, as I have enjoyed mine. However, I need to convince my wife that our family really NEEDS a kamado cooker for emergencies in the event of one our legendary horrible Georgia winters leaving us weeks without power.
Thanks for sharing . I have been researching these.. I want the Jr. I saw one review where the thermostat was off by 50 degrees he said it was a easy fix. he put he end in boiling water & reset the thermostat with a nut in the back of it. beside that it looks to be a awesome ceramic grill. :")
Hi Angie, I actually think that's a good thing. Sometimes these dial thermometers can be off but you can't even fix them. I have a miniature the Big green egg and probably wouldn't recommend it as you're only Grill. It's great for small cooks but if you ever plan on cooking ribs, briskets or turkeys you'll be happier with an 18.5 inch (large) size... And they don't cost that much more. Hope this helps Justin
Noticed this is was old video but anyways, just that little.. "Or Consent" cracked me up... Keep em comin BBM! I sense an amazing summer up and coming.
Boom baby. Nice video Justin. Thoughts on the summit rusting are a concern for me. Great big joe details concerned about ceramic cracking. Still interested in the blaze aluminum kamado but only 20 inches. The struggle is real brother. 💨🔥🍗👀
Yeah, I still need you to get the Blaze and let me know what you think. Also, 20 inches really isn't that much smaller when you take out the size of the the firebox. There is really only about 21 inches of span for direct cooking. Soooo....yeah. What's your excuse again? lol
I'm assuming the smoked meat that comes off these are closer to a stick burner than pellet grills? Also, what's the closet you can get to stick burner flavor without actually using one?
It's actually more similar to a pellet grill (both in ease of use and smoke profile) but you can always add more wood. In my experience, the closest I've seen too replicating an offset are a kettle with the slow N Sear and the Weber Smoky Mountain. I am not sure why though. It probably comes down to increased airflow with the Weber Smoky Mountain. Not sure what makes the SNS so similar though. It just is.
Loved your review Justin. Just got my KamadoJoe KJ23RHC Classic II Ceramic Charcoal Grill, Blaze Red yesterday. I am trying to convince two coworkers to gimme a hand on lifting this puppy which is super heavy thanks to the ceramic interior. I will tell them BBQ is on me if I get their help. I think it's fair enough.
@@BabyBackManiac I ended up doing myself dude. Gathererd all the strength I had yesterday (rehab mode today) lifted that thing twice (once to get the grill off the upside down cart and on the ground twice to get it on the cart). Had to take all the parts out first of course. Thank you for the tip in that Kick Ash Basket. Ordered it already. Love your channel and keep up with good work you've been putting in do far.
New viewer, and now new sub here. Man I'm hardcore Big Green Egghead, but this new Joe is something else! I'm in the market for a new cooker of this style, and I'm seriously considering the Joe. Thanks for the great review.
That's Jason, I specifically did this review before using the grill just to outline the new features with the idea that if I had any problems, I'd report back in future videos. Watch the video I did after this one where I cook Wagyu briskets. I'm having some issues with my new cap. Not a big deal but something to factor into the decision process. Hope this helps. Good luck with your next cooker! Justin
you have a few grills at your disposal. KJ. Egg, Summit, and your WSM at least from the videos. What else do you have and do you us them all and what do you use the most? Do some get used for different cooks or could they all do the same? WMS i know wouldnt be good for the hot sear cooks. But if your smoking with the others would you need a WSM?
Hi Philo, Thanks for asking. I used to have a handful of grills that all had separate jobs that they did best but since I started youtube, I've had opportunities to add a few that I don't really "need"...but I enjoy having them and gives me variety and creative options to come up with RUclips content. The WSM is definitely not one that I "need" but I love it. If somebody was looking for just a pure smoker (not versatility), I think it's the best bang for the buck. Hope this makes sense.
For sure. Thats what i have is the 18" WSM. But i really need to justify the price (meaning convince the wife)of going for a ceramic device. KJ was the top of my list since it offered so much more for the price than the BGE. But now this Gorilla Grill has peaked my interest. But first would need to justify the use for it. Dont want to pay for it and not use it. Along with my WSM i just have a Weber 22" standard performer. Which does everything i need it to. But the KJ or GG would be a nice new toy and maybe wouldnt need the performer anymore.
If you are trying to "justify" price, I think the best value upgrade you can make is a 26 kettle...with the next step up being to add a Slow N Sear and then replacing the WSM with a 22 WSM (if you need the space.) The main advantage to kamados is convenience, versatility, aesthetics, and just to try something new. I was told this when I first bought a kamado and I think it's true. I do NOT think the food is going to automatically taste better. (Different and still awesome, yes! Categorically taste better, not really.) I think people who say so aren't experienced cooks coming from Weber kettles. They are mostly new cooks and their food tastes great because they are having a blast cooking, doing it more often, and getting really good at it. Again, that's a generalization and there will be exceptions. However, if you want to come down to one awesome, versatile cooker, that is a heck of a lot of fun to use and looks great on the patio these kamados are a great for that.
Hi Justin. There is a lot of "buzz" about the ceramic grills, "It's the one and only grill you need" and such. What's you honest opinion about that? Congrats to the new one btw, you lucky.... 😁
I think if you are looking for a "one and only grill" they are one of the best options you can get because of the versatility. Smoked meat doesn't taste like it came off a stick burner and pizza doesn't taste like it came from a pizza oven...but the food is still great and you can do anything on them.
Yo, Justin, fabulous review, and the shirt looks like it came out great....thanks for the shout out! Man, that Kamado Joe is the one I want, if I go out and purchase it myself, the wife is still anxious to buy me a BGE, we will see.....great video as usual. Keep'em smokin'
Thanks Daryl, I really liked my BGE when I had it but the features of the KJ make it so much more fun to use. BGE is a bigger brand and more well known though...at least for now. When I sold my old Big Green Egg, it only took a matter of hours. They also have a bigger forum. That said, my wife and I both prefer the red/black to the green. Maybe somebody will offer you a hookup at some point and it will be a moot point. I've heard Grill Dome is another company that has done that for some folks in the past as well. Just FYI. No problem on the shout out. It's my pleasure. This video is off to a really good start so hopefully it will help get the word out about the new venture. I love that shirt. The likeness is uncanny. First time I posed like that I was like "Holy crap! He nailed it!" I couldn't stop laughing. Did you draw that? Justin
Hi Pat, Any time. I'm going to upload a video this week where I will talk about some of the issues Ive had after using it for a few weeks. Nothing major but there are a few things to look out for. You can check out my Facebook page to see some of the issues now if you don't want to wait. Justin
I'm trying to decide between a Summit and a 24" ceramic to consolidate a Kettle22 and a WSM22. What are your thoughts on the BJ2 vs the Summit? They look really nice but man they are expensive.
Thanks for the review. Bought it today. It was standing between this and the Summit, but in the end I wanted to try something else than another Weber. :)
Awesome vid Justin!! It's Big Swole again from the Brethren. Now you have me wanting to spend more money. Lol I really like the new big Joe! Keep up the good work brother.
I really appreciate you identifying yourself every time. It's super helpful. That said, I now officially know you by this name too so you are good to go. lol. Glad you liked the review. I think it turned out great. What's weird is it actually sucked the first time I did it and I scrapped the whole thing and started over. Much happier with how this one turned out. How's the cop business these days?
Well I forgot to leave my real name, which is David. lol But I know you respond to a lot of people so was just making sure you had a way of making the connection. Anyway, I love your video "style" and sense of humor. That's what makes a great channel. Well , my line of work is always stressful but luckily I don't deal as much with the crime and paperwork part as I use to. I'm in a special unit that gets to do a little more P.R. stuff that's more fun most of the time. Thank you for asking. Keep up the awesome vids and God Bless brother!! David
Yeah, making that association really helped me because ever video gets a hundred comments...and then some folks also reach out on Facebook because they don't like leaving comments here so it gets confusing. I'm not sure how people like T-roy or Rus with significantly larger channels are able to keep up with it all. Anyways, that was very thoughtful of you. That sounds like a cool gig. There is a guy around here that does that. I see him all the time. He's the one that always ends up on TV or talks our HOA or stuff like that. He's also the guy you end up talking to when something bad happens in the area and you call in to find out what's up. (At least that's what he said...I haven't ever felt the urge to call.) I always thought that was a pretty cool gig. Yeah, the spray bottle thing made me laugh as well.
Good video man - as usual. I had a KJ a few years back (standard not BIG) and found it too small. Sold it thinking I'd move up to the Big Joe and life and other $$$ needs took priority. The new Big Joe looks bad ass and very well thought out. I think KJ listens to their customers and makes the needed changes. Hopefully one day I'll have enough pennies saved, until then, the Performer gets the gig. Cheers
Nothing wrong with the Performer. That's all I used for years. In fact, the best brisket I ever made came off a performer. I agree with you about KJ listening to their customers. At the end of the day, i think that's what I like about them most. They fix problems instead of pretending like they aren't there.
ah, the 12million dollar question. lol. My general answer to this question is either the 26 kettle with a slow N Sear is the best value, the Kamado Joe Big Joe is the best ceramic, and the Weber Summit Charcoal grill is probably my all time favorite. I don't think anybody could go wrong with any of those three if you are looking for a "only one" grill. It's just a matter of what you have to spend.
Outstanding video Justin. Kamado Joe had already out paced Big Green Egg with their last round of features but now they have moved the bar even higher. With the addition of the new air assist hinge system, the mesh gasket & the new cap they've put some real distance between themselves and their competitors. These are innovative well thought out additions that bring great value to an already outstanding product. Yes; I would like to see a year in review of the Weber Summit Charcoal. Lastly; you referred to your Kamodo Kamado in past tense, what happened to it?
Hi Mark, I sold it last year. It's a very nice and extremely well built piece of equipment but when it came to using it, I find I enjoy using my others more. Then I realized I had a lot of money tied up in a grill that I wasn't totally in love with and it just made sense to move on. It worked out great, I recouped most of my investment and the new owner loves it. We keep in touch. It was a very hard decision...don't let that brief explanation fool you. lol. Thanks for watching, Justin
Jeremy Hasselbacher If you don’t it will fall over and then pieces of ash get underneath it and you can’t put it back up....and babying it when you are messing with the coals or cleaning out the ash to keep it from falling over is a bigger pain than bolting it.
Your reviews got me curious about the weber summit ... but for $1000 *extra*, does it really make it worth it over a Kamado Joe? That's a lot of restaurant bbq meals!
You mean…… companies give you stuff for doing this???? Wow! LLLLLL I like the the new design of the firebox, which has the separate petals. Much easier to replace one petal, than the whole ring. You Kick Ash My Friend! \m/
This comment slipped by me. I don't think it showed up in my comments feed. very strange. Anyways, yeah, they gave it to me...can you believe that crap?!? I was as surprised as anyone. I actually knew about this all the way back before the holidays. Maybe as early as Oct/Nov. They found me on a thread in a public message board and said they'd like to send me one out of the blue. I found out when everybody else on that thread did. I didn't talk about it because I sorta couldn't believe it. One thing that was really good was they made it pretty clear they weren't looking to buy me off. In fact, I think the way I treated the Summit (talking about the good, the bad, the ugly...but fair) may be what got their attention...which is actually great because I wouldn't have been able to accept it if they were going to tell me what to do or say. I think the best thing I have to offer here is (kinda like you) experience with multiple types of cookers so being able to keep my objectivity was important to me.
Bobby Brennan, the owner of Kamado Joe, is a class act. He does stuff like that all of the time in our KJ FB group. Very respected! Great Video. I look forward to seeing it in action on your future videos.
This one is mine and I work for Adrenaline Barbecue Company. Though to be honest, Dave Parrish is more of a friend of mine now than client. ABCbarbecue is a really great company to be associated with and the Slow 'N Sear is growing in popularity like crazy. There are some really cool things coming in the future so I'm having a lot of fun with it, and it's been a great arrangement for both of us.
I just purchased the classic with the new counterbalance hinge. After my second cook I noticed that the hinge wasn't holding the lid open on its own. This could be because the gaskets were a bit damp thus throwing off the balance. Just wondering if you've encountered this issue? Would adjusting the tension solve this? Thanks great channel!
Hey Kevin, I haven't had this issue but if I were you I would definitely call them and let them straighten it out for you. That doesn't seem normal to me. Let me know what they say. Justin
Nice looking smoker. I'm sure you will get plenty of good cooks on that. How do you like it compared to the Weber. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a blessed day
Thanks Ashley, I love the Summit and the reasons I bought it over a ceramic are still in tact. KJ is such a great grill and a great company that is mitigating alot of the things I like better about the summit. It's great to have options, ya know?
Justin,
Thanks for your help on this, I love my Kamado Joe Classic (2017) edition and I think it is perfect size wise for my wife and I (Having a few friends over and I definitely see why a bigger grill would help depending on what you are making). Here are my pros and cons to supplement your list
Pros:
- I have been grilling for over 20 years but being able to set the temp and rely on the fact it stays steady is unreal!
- The ash bucket is brilliant
- Being able to shut down the airflow to reuse the charcoal is unreal
- Getting the grill up to temp is surprisingly fast (compared to an offset smoker)
- The fact that you can get the grill hot enough to self clean is brilliant (thinking of bringing my cast iron pans in for a deep clean)
Cons:
- The only significant downside that I have come across is the top vent seems to get gunked up with regular use and requires regular cleaning to keep it from sticking.
The grill has officially been inaugurated
- Ribs: check
- smoked pulled pork: check
- single rib boneless Ribeye ~2 1/2" (reverse seared): check
- Rotisseried and smoked chicken (two even): check
- Rotisseried and smoked pork belly (that's right, rotisseried and smoked then seared skin): check and highly recommended
- Super low beef jerky: check (reminds me of the old beef jerky from when I was a kid in Wyoming)
- Smoked salmon: check
- Crispy skin chicken: check (I need to work on this one more)
- Pizza is on the list of to do's
Thanks again, subscription must!
Awesome. Congratulations. Thanks for watching
Justin this review is awesome. Kamado Joe if you are watching good move in giving this to Justin!!! Because I'm buying one now!!!
Thanks Maddog8148!
I am really glad you found this helpful, man. I think you'll love it.
Justin
Same, just ordered my Big Joe II 5 minutes after watching.
Hey Guapo,
I think KJ is definitely onto something. The kick ash is really nice. I never thought about loading outside the cooker...I bet that keeps all the fines and dust of the way. Great top. I feel like it saves me a ton of time between cooks as well. Wish I would have thought of it. lol.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
Yep. Good point. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Derrick,
I like theses kamados but I'm a Weber fan too.
That's an interesting idea. Thanks of the tip, Bruiser2117.
Divider is NOT bolt in. Simply insert the prongs into the matching holes in the grate. It’s quite rigid and stable.
Love their customer driven innovation and expect more as I think they have just begun!
Yeah, I get that feeling too, Tom. It will be fun to see what they come up with next.
Justin
Baby Back Maniac can you say controller!
and yes that is you on the shirt!
Going to the Kamado Joe Roadshow here in Ca this Saturday with the wife...let's hope she likes it too lol. Need one bad!
I know that feeling well, my friend. Good luck in your quest.
Justin
Would love a summit one year update. The new kamado looks awesome. Grill envy.
Thanks Jeff,
I'll try to get a review of the Summit up soon. Thanks for watching, man.
Justin
Hey great stuff. Just found your channel today actually while going through some of T-roys stuff.
You seem really genuine and honest about what you're doing and that's a great thing!
Really enjoy your stuff.
Thanks Bud,
I've been burned in the past by people who didn't disclose everything and it was very frustrating to me so I try to be as open as possible. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the kind words.
Justin
Nice review, and great to see the new hinge. My old school Bog Joe hinge needs adjusting every 6 weeks or so as it starts to "sag", even with adjustng it has caught me out twice.
Hey Spence,
Thanks for the feedback. When you say "sag" what you do you mean? I want to know what I need to be keeping an eye out for.
Thanks in advance,
Justin
Hey Justin, sorry for any confusion. The "sag" is on the original hinges with the spring tension system. If i adjust the lid so that it stays fully open then within around 6 weeks i will notice that the lid from fully open will drop a little, say 1/4 -1 /2 an inch, not fully shut but just drop a little, However, if i do not re-tension at that point within another week or so it will drop on its own, that has happened twice. I have now set a monthly reminder to re-tension the springs. From what i read not all Big Joe spring hinges need this regular adjustment it seems to have been a batch issue.
What a pain. Have you asked Komodo Joe about it? Their customer service is usually pretty good in the past.
Hey John,
You know what's interesting? I have had the exact opposite experience with those types of gaskets. The one on my Summit leaks but I think it's actually because of the way the lid closes on it...the gasket itself is in good shape. But my keg and akorn both did great with them and the felt one fell off within 10 cooks on my BGE. I guess it's just one of those luck of the draw things.
I'll try to remember to report back how this one holds up over time. I sure hope it does well...would be a pain to replace.
Justin
Interesting.....maybe I had a faulty gasket. Who knows.
They did a large amount of cooking when testing the new gasket with zero issues. I doubt those other gaskets were developed in conjunction with the same American made gasket company. Davlyn oven gaskets. Should be great quality..........I hope.
Stephen Hickey
That's really good to know, Stephen. I've been "better gasketed" so many times that I admit, I just sorta keep my expectations down. 900 testing cooks sounds very promising though.
Good to hear. I am sure KJ did their due diligence. Thanks for the info!!
(Why does that sound weird to me? lol)
Justin
For now, I'll just have to stick with swinging by my local dealer to gawk at it every few weeks.
Justin
I found you very entertaining. I am looking at this grill myself. and I am looking for honest reviews. Thanks.
Looks like Kamado has fixed all the very small problems they had.Awesome Grill, shirt, video! Rock On!
Thanks, Sal.
Yeah, it sure looks that way. Hopefully that will prove to be the case. Only time will tell for sure but it's looking really good here at the starting line.
Take care,
Justin
One year review of the Summit would be great! Your videos are great! Thanks.
Hi Todd,
Thanks for the feedback. I will try to get that done.
Justin
Nice Justin. Yes the one year review would be great to hear.
Hi Adan,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to make it happen soon.
Justin
Love the upgrades to the Big Joe, now let's see this baby fired up and cookin!
Hi Steve,
I know, right?!? What's all this screwing around with a perfectly clean cooker? Time to get some meat on there!!!
lol. Thanks for watching.
Justin
+Baby Back Maniac - Congrats on your success on RUclips! a guest appearance on T-Roy's show, 2 channels of your own, free grills......you are a rising star!! Keep up the good work & smoke on....
love the new shirt really captures your likeness.Whould love to see a one year review of your summit.
Hi William,
Uncanny, isn't it? lol. Yeah, I want to do that review as well so it will probably happen. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks,
Justin
I own several grills myself and have been thinking about downsizing to maybe the "one" to rule them all. Internally in my brain though I have been protesting the price of the Summit with the table.
Hey Pete,
Tough decision.
I'm curious. lol.
As always Justin, awesome video, love the picture quality, and your sense of humor.
Thanks Anders,
It's a lot of work but I'm having fun with this. I really appreciate you watching.
Justin
Thanks for the review Justin, having gone "green" I didn't think I would ever consider "red" you make some compelling arguments.
Yeah, they did some good stuff in this. It's clear they put a lot of emphasis on innovation. I like that.
Thanks for watching, man.
Justin
Love my BGE, but am really loving everything about KJ's!
Hi Tim,
Yeah, it's compelling, isn't it?
LOL
Cheers brother!
One year summit review sounds great.
Hi Manny,
Noted! lol.
Justin
Hi Kurt,
Yeah, I think I'm going to do that video. Everybody is asking for it and I want to do it so it's a win all the way around. The problem I have with videos like this is there is SO much to say and I have this internal timer than goes off in my head when things go on too long (and just thinking about a Summit review makes it go off. lol)
Thanks for watching,
Justin
You lucky S.O.B. Yes 1 year , year end review review would be cool
Thanks, man. Yeah, I'll keep working on that review.
Love your review. Great mix of humor and presenting facts
Yes do a 1 year summit review!
Thanks Angus,
I'll try to do that soon. Appreciate you watching.
Justin
As HMB at Heavy Metal BBQ would say "Smoke On"
Thanks Phil,
Editing is the most important part, I'm learning.
Thanks Phil. I appreciate it. Yeah, the channel growth is pretty crazy. About 1500 a month. I honestly can't believe it but I'm excited about it.
Congratz on getting Kamado Joe onboard cant wait to see all the videos
Thanks, Charlie. I can't wait to make them. lol. I appreciate you watching.
nice innovations! I always thought the gaskets sucked and told them so. The lid weight was an issue too especially with many women in the family. I have been a Costco roadshow rep for KM, so I foresee better sales coming up now. Fabian
Hi Fabian,
Yeah, the lid weight was the worst thing about it for me.
Hi Jim,
I agree with you on the cart. I almost dropped a big green egg once too. It was a medium though. It was so a smart thing to do for KJ to make a sturdy cart that isn't tippy and doesn't take an hour to put together. Why they don't all do that is beyond me!
Justin
I call shenanigans! Very impressed though by the lid those things are typically very heavy
Now that you've had the Joe for nearly a year would love to get your thoughts.
The hinge is great. The gasket is incredible, the firebox hasn't cracked but I never take it out because I don't want to piece it back together. lol. The top vent I was so excited about was a complete failure and some of the "stainless steel" hardware rusted. All in all, it's fine.
@@BabyBackManiac interesting. Thanks for the reply! Would you recommend a different Kamado at a similar price point?
@@Fraaip They all have quirks. Right now the ones I like best are the Primo and the Weber Summit Charcoal grill.
@@BabyBackManiac thanks! Keep making the awesome content! Thoughts are with you and your family.
Thank you!
Thanks!
Hey,
They have a dealer finder on their website...but the best deal is the Costco Road show. Check out this video. ruclips.net/video/rFJlBgNqfyE/видео.html
Its long but there is a table of contents where you can skip around. I talk about why I recommend the KJ over the Big green egg. As a Big Green Egg guy, you'll appreciate it.
Justin
Which would you prefer (say is better) the new kamado joe or the big green egg? Thanks in advance.
Kamado Joe
Hey Larry,
You are the second person to mention the gasket.
Justin
You need to get your hands on the new one with the slo roller. I wanna see of the slo roller is legit or if it's just hype.
Ahh that makes more sense now. I'm interested to see how useful it actually is. Thanks for the reply and sub'd!
Any time! Thanks for subbing.
I'm looking forward to seeing the follow ups on this grill. Especially the fire box.
Hi Keith,
Yeah, me too. Will keep you posted.
Justin
Yes on the 1-year Summit review!
Thanks, Gary.
I really appreciate you watching and giving some feedback. I'll try to get that done soon.
Justin
Hi Robin,
Yeah, I want to do that review as well.
I am trying to decide between:
The Weber Summit Charcoal
M Grills M1 Smoker
Lone Star Grillz Vertical Offset Smoker
Obviously the last two are primarily intended as stick burners and the Summit is intended for charcoal, but I love the versatility of all three.
Great review,
I just bought new big joe from costco.
Thanks for watching!
Justin
Baby Back Maniac
Don't know about one more.
I would like to see 1 yr review of the summit
Thanks Matt,
I will try to get that done. Lots of people felt the exact same way. I appreciate it.
Justin
Which Grill is more fuel efficient, The Kamado Joe or the Weber Summit?
Yes-Please do a 1 year Weber Summit Review
You got it, Brandon. Thanks for watching!
Great upgrades, I really like the new Hinge and Gasket. I have never used the Divider on mine, I like the new one but you are right about the bolt on thing, not good. Great Video Justin.
Thanks Lumpy,
I would have used the divider more on my old one but the ceramic didn't fit between the fire ring...therefore I had to pull the whole grill apart to take it in and out which sorta defeated the purpose to begin with. This fits but has a similar drawback. I probably will do the Kick Ash thing at some point. It seems like the best work around. Then again, last time I found the Divide and conquer to work just fine.
Justin
In my research for a Kamado Joe I totally forgot you have one. I need that email from them asking if I want one. Haha!
However, I need to convince my wife that our family really NEEDS a kamado cooker for emergencies in the event of one our legendary horrible Georgia winters leaving us weeks without power.
lol. Sounds like you should pray for ice and let the elements make your case for you. lol
Yes would love to see your one year review of the Summit
Thanks Gino,
I will try to make that happen for you. I really appreciate you watching!
Justin
This was a great video. The host was funny in a dorky way and knowledgeable.
Thanks Sigmund,
That's exactly what I'm going for in these videos so I'm glad you liked it. Have a great week.
Justin
Thanks for sharing . I have been researching these.. I want the Jr. I saw one review where the thermostat was off by 50 degrees he said it was a easy fix. he put he end in boiling water & reset the thermostat with a nut in the back of it. beside that it looks to be a awesome ceramic grill. :")
Hi Angie,
I actually think that's a good thing. Hope this helps
Justin
Thank you I am leaning towards the larger one so I can do ribs on it. :")
I think you'll be happy with that. I like the small one but I don't use it very often.
Noticed this is was old video but anyways, just that little.. "Or Consent" cracked me up... Keep em comin BBM! I sense an amazing summer up and coming.
Thanks Kathul!
I really appreciate it!
TBaby Back Maniac
What's your excuse again? lol
Great review!! Also I need to saw that your "rain" test on the top vent was epic! Loved it. Keep crushin it.
Thanks, man. I really appreciate it. I try to keep it fun. By the way, I've watched a few of your videos and love your vibe.
Justin
Thanks man, Would love to chat with you more about what your up to one of these days.
Sounds good. Hit me up on my Facebook page or email me at baby back maniac at gmail (no spaces) if you ever need anything.
Totally fair, Gino. If they won't lift a grill for bbq then they don't deserve your bbq. lol
Thanks man. Hope the hernia surgery goes well. LOL
@@BabyBackManiac LOL. I'm all good now.
lol
Hi Philo,
Thanks for asking.
If you are trying to "justify" price, I think the best value upgrade you can make is a 26 kettle...with the next step up being to add a Slow N Sear and then replacing the WSM with a 22 WSM (if you need the space.)
The main advantage to kamados is convenience, versatility, aesthetics, and just to try something new.
Those gaskets are awesome. Can you get them for the BGE?
Baby Back Maniac interesting I was hoping it would taste like a stick burner and pizza from a pizza oven
Thanks Daryl,
I really liked my BGE when I had it but the features of the KJ make it so much more fun to use.
Justin
No I didn't draw it, just happen to have a graphic that came close, change a few things, but I am glad you like it, enjoy!
Pulled the trigger after your review! Thanks for putting all this (review + channel) together!
Hi Pat,
Any time.
WOw I want a Kamado Joe now! can't believe all those new great features
Yeah, they are constantly innovating. I really like that about KJ.
Justin
Thanks for the review. Bought it today. It was standing between this and the Summit, but in the end I wanted to try something else than another Weber. :)
As always Justin great video, and yes to Summit review video!
Thanks, Scott.
I'll plan on doing the review video. Not sure when but probably in the next 2-3 videos.
Awesome vid Justin!! It's Big Swole again from the Brethren. Now you have me wanting to spend more money. Lol
I really like the new big Joe!
David
My favor scene was your spray bottle face! LOLOL

They fix problems instead of pretending like they aren't there.
ok Justin, if you were forced to sell all of your smokers but one, which one would you keep? maybe that's another video...😁
ah, the 12million dollar question.
I still can't work out where the huge price tag comes from? It's a ceramic bowl and metal!
SCG 1 year review YES!
GS I,
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate you watching. Have a great weekend.
Justin
Outstanding video Justin. Kamado Joe had already out paced Big Green Egg with their last round of features but now they have moved the bar even higher. With the addition of the new air assist hinge system, the mesh gasket & the new cap they've put some real distance between themselves and their competitors. These are innovative well thought out additions that bring great value to an already outstanding product.
Yes; I would like to see a year in review of the Weber Summit Charcoal.
Lastly; you referred to your Kamodo Kamado in past tense, what happened to it?
Hi Mark,
I sold it last year.
It was a very hard decision...don't let that brief explanation fool you. lol.
Thanks for watching,
Justin
I saw another video on the big Joe and I don't think you have to bolt the coal divider to the grate I think it just sits in there
Jeremy Hasselbacher If you don’t it will fall over and then pieces of ash get underneath it and you can’t put it back up....and babying it when you are messing with the coals or cleaning out the ash to keep it from falling over is a bigger pain than bolting it.
Dude, I laff-cried at "flippy flippy!"
Your reviews got me curious about the weber summit ... but for $1000 *extra*, does it really make it worth it over a Kamado Joe? That's a lot of restaurant bbq meals!
You mean…… companies give you stuff for doing this???? Wow! LLLLLL
I like the the new design of the firebox, which has the separate petals.
Love your videos, keep it up! I'd like to see a year end review for the Weber Summit
Hi David,
Yeah, I want to do that video too so it will probably happen. I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave feedback.
Justin
Justin I must ask do you own both this channel and Adrenaline barbque or do you work with them?
Hey Kevin,
I haven't had this issue but if I were you I would definitely call them and let them straighten it out for you. That doesn't seem normal to me. Let me know what they say.
Justin
Nice looking smoker. I'm sure you will get plenty of good cooks on that. How do you like it compared to the Weber. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a blessed day
Thanks Ashley,
I love the Summit and the reasons I bought it over a ceramic are still in tact. KJ is such a great grill and a great company that is mitigating alot of the things I like better about the summit. It's great to have options, ya know?
