I've got a KJ warranty story for you, James. I received my Classic I back in August of 2011. This grill was given to me at no charge for helping them demo grills that summer outside of the store on Saturday mornings. So I didn't have a receipt but I managed to register my grill on their website at the time. A year later I filed a warranty claim for the thermometer and Bobby Brennan (founder of KJ) himself replied to the email, as KJ was still relatively small. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I decide it's time to replace the cracked firebox I've been using for a couple of years. I contact KJ but they can't find me in their system. Not surprising since they've changed ownership since then and mine was a special case. They asked if I had the receipt, but since it was gifted by the dealer, I didn't. I asked the representative if an email approving the warranty claim from Bobby back in 2012 would suffice as proof of original ownership. They asked me to forward the old email over and they'd check with their supervisor. The next morning I had an email stating they would honor the warranty and I got my tracking number late last week. Assuming everything arrives correctly this week, I would consider this to be exemplary customer service and support. My current firebox is the original that came with the grill so it's the old design. I got 6 tracking numbers from KJ so it looks like I'm being upgraded to the "petal" design.

Again a very balanced view of both cookers. BTW after doing my 6 month maintenance you suggested. I found my thermometer on the dome was broken and I could not adjust. Stayed at 250 degrees no matter what I did, noticed that difference when I got and used my Meater probes. I reached out to warranty as you mentioned above on line, was resolved in under 2 hours with them shipping me a new thermometer. Thank you again for your wealth of knowledge, so we can keep firing it up.

Another great video James. I like the chapter divisions, especially on the 101 videos, because it makes it easy to review just the info you need. I also wanted to mention that, when it comes ro taste and texture, I find /here is something about the Primo XL. I have had several conversations with enthusiasts that agree. I don't know what it is, but between the Primo XL and the Bog Joe 2 with the Slo Roller, the XL takes it every time. Thanks again, and keep firing it up.

I had a problem with the upper band on my CIII moving when I opened and closed the lid. It had started making a crunching sound and I could see small bits of ceramics drop out with every move. I asked the local dealer here in Norway what do to and also asked in an online forum. The forum advised me on tightening the band, which resolved the problem. In the mean time the dealer forwarded my question to KJ, which offered to ship me a replacement base. I told them it was fixed and I probably didn't need it, but they shipped it anyway. I guess I will swap it out at one point since it takes up a lot of space in the basement and use the old base as a gigantic plant pot out on the deck complimenting the grill that is always there!

Last year I went through the struggle of deciding which one to purchase, the egg or the joe. After many RUclips videos and online forums, I went back into my local dealer, and talked to a super nice employee (to this day still remembers me when I walk in) and sold me on the egg. Mainly due to the no hassle warranty. They delivered it, setup the table, took their time reviewing everything, giving tips, etc. At the end of the day I think I would've been happier with the results either way. Plus the accessories you can find cheaper online or even use some of the joe's accessories on the egg.

I've only added the ceramic heat deflector (for indirect cooks) and a bluetooth temp sensor but absolutely love the cast iron grates and the 2nd level cooking grate. As an owner of a hand-me-down 2010 BGE I'm really interested to see the results of your upcoming cooks comparing the KJ to the BGE. One thing I am curious about is there any potentiantial interchangeability of the parts between the brands? Does the KJ "petal" firebox design work in a large BGE? Slo-roller? Considering you have both brands at your disposal, it would be kinda cool to see what I could do to my BGE to freshen it up utilizing some of the KJ innovations. Either way, red, green, blue or whatever color the komodo...this is my favorite BBQ channel! Thanks James!

have not watched this thru yet but already I like the two compartments for coals that the Kamado has! I have been considering this type of grill but the way I grill is to sear over high heat then move to indirect heat to finish cooking and it works very well for me, I also like to cook some items fully on indirect heat but get the smoke from the coals ,as far as I understand the big green egg just has one big dish for the coals and not any really nice way to keep it to one side, I am sure this can be worked around but I liked that accessory I saw just now! Will the KJ Divide and conquer fit on a Green Egg with Sloroller? I guessing the food will taste the same if you do the exact same thing to the cook. I’ve had my Kamado joe big joe 3 for about 2 years and love it. I’ve never used a big green egg so I compare, but what I can speak of is the Kamado joe warranty and customer service. My dome cracked where the control tower is attached, I contacted Kamado joe through the chat, I uploaded a couple pictures and within 10 min start to finish they told me a new dome was ordered, no charge. About a month later the main bolt on my airlift hinge broke making it inoperable (they have since changed the design). Again I contacted them through chat, uploaded a couple pictures and within 10 minutes had a new airlift hinge ordered and on the way, again free of charge. I will always recommend a product with outstanding customer service. I’ve had the same customer service with vitamix blenders, so if you need a good blender I highly recommend.

I think the KJ classic 3 is a no brainer in value over the BGE large. I would be interested in seeing your take on the BGE XL or 2XL vs the Big Joe 3 as the jump from a large BGE to the XL is about $400 usd and the jump from the classic 3 to Big joe 3 is closer to the $1k usd mark. Love the videos and comparisons!

I think red looks better :-) I used to see the BGE at various hardware stores, usually as I was window shopping somewhere with my wife. I saw the price vs. a Weber and I just couldn't justify the huge price. What sold me on the KJ was a certain southern Canadian who showed me how the KJ can be a smoker and hot-and-fast grill. The KJ assortment of goodies that come in the box pretty much let you do it all. I have a Smokeware cap coming for my Big Joe -- I really dislike the KJ top because it gets gummed up so easily. I have the Smokeware cap for my Jr. and really like it. BTW, I love the metal shelves for the reasons you cited. Wood shelves look nice but the practicality factor is very low.

Hi James, great video on comparing both BGE and KJ. Both are great kamados, from your review of these products and your 101 videos, I had very much considered getting a kamado from Kamado Joe. However, a friend of my picked up a Kamado from a on-site work place because the owner didn't want it anymore as they are moving out of the country. So he decided to "donated" the grill to me because he didn't know how to use and doesn't have any place for it. The Kamado is from Vision Grill and I have seen review that it very comparable to both BGE and KJ. As you mentioned about your upcoming video on comparing brisket on both BGE & KJ, would you be able to do a three way comparison between BGE, KJ & Vision Grill as these are very similar ceramic cookers?

It would be nice if you would exchange some accessories of the bge in the kj & vice versa (do they fit/does work). As well, I would of love to see if you could do a Frankenstein by putting the green ceramic parts on the kj hinge and ring. I love the Red Color but i find the green nicer to match in a home. Thank you.

the new hinge doesn’t close on the JoeTisserie like the old one could and the DoJoe does not fit at all. the JoeTisserie with an air leak can be used

I have a question about the egg. Could you create a double indirect setup using both the half moon deflector plates and the conveggtor at the same time? Might you have to use the top half of the eggcessory rack to place the meat, so it has a little space between itself and the conveggtor, or would/could you just have it right on top of the grates that are above the second deflector? Maybe even stacking the half moon grates under the full time grate, to keep it further from the top?
    Asking ... for a friend with a BGE.... ;)

I have had BGE for well over a decade now. Although BGE itself has been slow and expensive with accessories stuff like the woo ring have better purpose and functionality than either the KJ or eggspander stuff. All for a lot less money. At this point I could sell my eggs for significantly more than I paid (My large still has the 4” handle). They are just as up to date as the series III and the new stuff from BGE YEARS before they were available from either OEM.

I'm team green. Having my egg now for quiet a bit, this will be the forth season. Have it like the one your having, build a bar around so was good it came without a nest ;). Just about the cracks, my egg is build within a bar and never moves. It also doesn't have any cracks. So maybe you had more bad luck, mine also got a bit of space around so maybe as your mentioned at the Joe that the little space around makes the difference. (By the way if you have an older model you can buy an upgrade package to make your egg like the new models)
Not sure how this works for the Joe but what I do with my thermometer is when I'm sitting away from my BBQ I turn the thermometer so the dial should point up for being the right temperature

I can’t attest to the bge but I own both a kj big joe 3 and another named brand large kamado. The kj is by far superior when it comes to temp stability. It blows my mind every cook how stable it is even during 8 to 12 hour cooks and I am no bbq wizard at all. The big joe does the hard work to perfection. Almost mine stood outside in sun, rain and snow for a long time no. Wipe it off and it looks brand new again. Great weather resistance

How would you say the hinge mechanism on the BGE compares to the KJ? I know the airlift hinge can be "lifted by a child", but ... if for example, the hinge on a KJ3 can accomodate 95% of the weight of the dome, and the hinge on a KJ only accomodates 10% of the weight of the dome, where would you say the BGE lands?

@@SmokingDadBBQ I didn’t think so either but companies will try to differentiate themselves some how. For me, I like the aesthetics of the KJ and the accessories. It really allows you to do various types of cooking all in one unit. Wished they came up with a safe and cool way to use the KJ to deep fry but it’s not absolutely necessary.

In Australia the kjoe's classics are $1299, $2299 and $3299 for the 1, 2 and 3, for the large bge you're paying $2199 with a cart or $1899 without a cart... Not sure why anyone would go bge over kjoe series 1 when it costs almost $1000 more and is on par at best

  • @hazardo4378

As an owner of a fairly new XL BGE, I'm going to call the brisket challenge in advance. I have the EGGspander, and it is possible to add wood mid cook as you can lift the entire cooking apparatus out and drop in more wood, however I can't find a way to use the plate setter and additional ceramic plates for a "double indirect", which is clearly your preference. That and there's no slow roller option either. I think the Joe will edge it.

Competition is a good thing. It breeds innovation. If not for KJ and the other ceramic grills out there, BGE wouldn't have made any changes. That lack of innovation is precisely the reason I got a KJ about 5 years ago instead of a BGE.
