I wrote this specific orchestral version, glad so many people enjoy it. It’s truly a great piece and was an honor working with it. It’s part of a longer Aliens suite. Since I had no access to the original score, I had to listen to it and transcribe it by ear, I hope I was close enough for all Aliens fans :) some of those dense clusters took a while to decipher.

Incredible to think that Horner probably wrote this in a matter of hours as his schedule to complete the score was crammed into just a few days. It's like you can feel how frantic he was through the music, as though he feverishly channeled that emotion into the score and imbued the film with something so definitive that everyone knows it the moment they hear it. Legend. 💕

Absolutely agree. If you watch the documentary - I think it's one of the anniversary ones - Horner talks about the chaotic schedule and how ludicrously little time he was given to complete the final score. At that time Gale Anne Hurd was a relatively novice producer and had no understanding or appreciation for how soundtracks were composed. She simply had no idea and thought that shouting and threats would get results (as producer, it was also *her fault* for not devising a realistic schedule in the first place). Horner was a creative genius - that phrase is MUCH overused, but in his case it was absolutely true - and his professionalism and desire to complete the task eventually carried the day. And my God, how he delivered. This is easily one of the best cinematic scores in history, and an object lesson in how a lovingly and intricately crafted soundtrack can turn a mediocre sci-fi B-movie into an all-time classic cinematic experience (see also the original star Wars trilogy).

Not to take anything away from Horners brilliant work but he did reuse some melodies and arrangements from past work for Aliens, look up a video called “James Horner Self Plagiarism “

Absolutely amazing. Most versions tend to slow parts of it down but 0:52 just comes out swinging

0:38 - 0:46 the variations with the snare in those 8 seconds alone
0:52 - 1:00 as you mentioned, the overall quick tempo of the strings, French horns, and Timpani
      1:00 onward. That F*CKING Timpani

one of my favourite James Horner creations, have loved this for decades, love the whole sound track, what a shame no one could be there to enjoy it. I would have loved being there.

And originally written as Genesis Countdown in Star Trek II. Horner was under a lot of pressure to get the score for Aliens done (I did read he was given two days, but I'm not sure how true that is), so he recycled a few bits from earlier scores. It works brilliantly for both films. Horner was just too good at writing for action and sci-fi and put himself in a lot of demand in the 80's. How he did it all I don't know!

That wasnt the whole piece. Im not even sure that was half of it. Why did you cut it short? Only when you hear the whole thing can you appreciate the fact that Horner wrote the entire piece in just a few hours over one night.
