Putin once said (paraphrase) that whoever did not regret the demise of the Soviet Union has no heart, but whoever wants to go back to the Soviet Union has no head. So, while Gorbachev's legacy is reviled by Putin and most Russians, they respect his view that the political and economic system was deeply flawed and had to be changed. Putin's mixed but respectful response to Gorbachev's passing is entirely consistent with the national sentiment.

His failure to rule the USSR resulted in one of the biggest economic catastrophies in modern history. The economies of Russia and Ukraine still haven't reached their 1990 levels 30 years later. Now brother nations hate and fight each other, even though they had conquered space together 60 years earlier. Gorbachev ended the Cold war peacefully but set the ground for a new Cold war. And this is his only achievement. His economic and political rule was hopeless.

The Problem is Russia can join "free world" only as resource colony. In order for Russia to become truly great country it has to conduct its own political agenda. For that Russia has to have meaningful Ideology and provide greater value for the world. Socialist Revolution was exactly such attempt, that stumbled in 1953... It has to resume, or Russia is going to be scavenged for its resources by neighbors. Putin's Russizm isn't enough. Russia has to come with something of a global appeal alternative once again

Reagan spoke directly to Secretary Gorbachev on political issues and it always seemed to be accepted. If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You most look outward if you wanna be successful in life.
