Come for the furry content, stay for the life lessons. The speech about joy and anxiety at 15:03 really hits hard! There's a lot to be learned from these old shows, you're doing great work introducing them to a wider audience and diving into their themes.
I have a female fursona that I only play online, and /she/ gets harassed, stalked, and got me doxxed twice. All because I wanna get in touch with my softer side from time to time. I can't even imagine what you go through at cons. I'm so sorry.
I was hoping you’d mention Red Riding Hood at 4:06 as well as comment on the Big Bad Wolf and why people cheer for that antagonist. Also you can’t imagine how many times I was asked to draw the wolf from ‘The Wolf and the Fox’ at 21:57 on deviantart.
Good point! There is a lot more to say about the Big Bad Wolf and what he represents. Danger but also change, hunger, the threat of the uncivilized wild, a first love but also a killer. It's fascinating!
Yaaay! Enjoy! You'll have a favorite episode before long. The Japanese versions are definitely more heart-felt and emotional, but the American dub has this comfy classic feel with the narration, so I like both!
Really great video! The transition to the Nick Jr. bumper made me ugly laugh. I love the lessons and introspection you provide in your videos, and I think you out did yourself with this one. Fantastic stuff!
i am always here for my fellow upright-walking donkeys i took a class on fairy tales in art school, and i love 80s anime, so this was all right up my alley. Thanks for such an in-depth look at this show i only dimly remember!
Just listened to the full theme song, goddamn does that bring back memories after 30+ years. I don't even remember seeing most of these, I'm guessing Nick Jr. really trimmed it down to just the popular ones?
I remember watching this as a youngun and distinctly remember the cloak of furs from Donkeyfur but not its message. I also loved hearing you break after saying "The third son turns into a JRPG protagonist."
Oh dear. I remember watching some of these in school of all places. I saw the Little Red Riding one and the one with Hansel and Gretel… The one with Hansel and Gretel definitely scared me as a kid… Literally a demon…
Wow, that got real at the end. Thanks for being willing to open up and talk about that stuff. Humans are animals, and only our empathy and education separates us from beasts who aren't even aware of concepts like consent. We can do so much better, and I hope to see that 1/5 statistic become a thing of the past while still enjoying that sexual liberty you mentioned. Mindful empathy is key in every situation across the spectrum of all people/genders. ❤️
This was a long-awaited video, and it made for such a wonderful watch. Thank you so much! Now I remiss that I'm illiterate to deeper European folklore, but hares as depicted in myth tend to be characterized as entirely self-deterministic to the same extent as predatory species. I can only assume this may entirely stem from their lanky, emaciated appearance and vigor, like the dichotomy cast on goats and sheep in christian symbology for mere aesthetics. And on the topic as a whole, I deeply felt your sentiment of desiring to see earnest depictions of processing trauma in media at large. Not to dwelve much into my personal experiences, but I'll out myself as a man and despite years of intensive self evaluation and seeking to learn from the whole of human experiance to build an informed perspective, the patriarchical paternalism of my upbringing still roils up against media that aims at my pride in some way. To that, I hope we recognize our moral obligations to dismantle the systemic opression and repression inherent to societies though education, entertainment and communication. Thank you again for sharing your work and story, they've both been impactful.
What do you think about all the furry shows that were shown on PBS Kids like between the Lions Clifford the big red dog and fetch with ruff ruff Ruffman
Rabbits are nice/reasonable, hares are assholes. There are asshole rabbits, too, but they aren't the norm. ALL hares are assholes. It's what makes hares fun XD
as a young boy soemtime in the 90s ( am both a 90s baby and child) i read fairy tale book about snow white and her sister rose red and how they helped a beast in from the cold. i liked that one
The Hare and the Hedgehog seems to be a variation of another folklore story where it's the Devil being tricked by a bundle of hedgehogs in a field. Basically the same story, but swap the bun out for The Devil Himself! Hares in British folklore were definitely seen as magic ( and then later demonised as Christianity took hold, as with lots of magical things that didn't align to their beliefs). They were tied with phases of the moon, mega fertility ( iirc they can actually get impregnated while carrying young, so partly true!), they were thought to be hermaphroditic, then symbolic of female reproductive cycles. Due to this they became tied in with witch folklore ( as familiars or transformed witches) and then demonised. There's some interesting and bizarre hare-witch folklore out there. If you ever wanted to do an episode on old animal folklore ( specifically UK based) I'd be happy to help! I've ran con panels on the subject and have a lot of reading and research x'D
Excellent stuff! I didn't know that about the hedgehog story! Yeah I love folklore more than the average person, I'm so curious what panels you've hosted. Hares have a fascinating trajectory in culture because I think they're still seen as mysterious and otherworldly to this day.
@@FurryFoundFootage I've done a few panels now for Confuzzled; Feral Folklore ( hoping to submit a sequel panel for 2025), Antique Furries ( Very similar to your content, tho we try to keep is pre 1980s) and Curious Cryptids. I believe 2 Antique Furries and my Cryptids panel were archived on CFZ tv - as these were during lock down so we did a video version. But I've done a few in-person events now and despite being nervous, it turns out I do enjoy them and attendees like them too. I'm still getting used to public speaking.
The late great Mike Reynalds (voice of Gennai) voiced several of the characters in this show. (The greedy landowner in The Faithful Watchmen and the demon in The Naughty Spirit for example.) Fun Fact: He also played a minor antagonist in Golgo 13: The Professional where he uses loud curse words like punctuation. Hearing Gennai curse like a sailor is both surreal and hilarious to Digimon fans.
Oh yes this anime series. Literally the opening is a 1-1 of the japanese version thank god. Anyway, most of the voices I heard from the clip with the donkey and Rooster from the "musicians". Long story, most of the voices I heard would be anime alumini that I would hear and be staple voices for later anime like Gundam. Heck I think I heard Lord Zed as the rooster.
Very good as always. You might also want to check out Hungarian Folk Tales sometime. Each episode is only about 5-10 minutes long and all of the episodes can be found on RUclips. There's a lot of overlap with Grimm's Fairy Tales (some are literally the same story with minor changes) and there is plenty of great animation and cool animal designs as well. There are also some really great Hungarian movies I saw as a kid like Willie the Sparrow and Vuk the Little Fox (nice if you're a fan of birds, cats and foxes) that I'd highly recommend. Lastly, I have a small question. What is your opinion on King Thrushbeard? It's probably the most controversial of the GFC stories with some calling it outright anti-feminist while others say the princess in the tale got what she deserved for being a spoiled brat. What's your take? Were the punishments the princess received too extreme or completely justified? I was hoping you'd address this episode in your video but it was one of the not furry stories. Also yeah, Bluebeard was pretty crazy! Ha ha!
I LOVE Hungarian Folk Tales! I think it would be worth doing a video on sometime, but I try to focus on things I saw in my own youth as much as I can first. It's hard when there are so many delicious cakes (shows and movies) I want to eat! As for the princess and King Thrushbeard, I'm of the same opinion as in the Frog Prince story: sometimes a lesson learned is love gained. I think King Thrushbeard especially is a great lesson in how low-income doesn't mean low-heart, something our modern gilded overlords could stand to learn.
I feel like I recognize a lot of these voice actors from 80’s and 90’s anime. Edit: Weird, a lot of the imdb pages for the show seem to lack many of the va credits.
What year were you born in?. I was born in 1985 so I’m a late 80s-90s kid and I remember watching this on Nick Jr back in the day. Nick Jr played a lot of Japanese Anime and Eurotoon stuff in their early days.
Yeah...me too. I honestly thought she played into that stuff, with how flirty she is with her audience and how sexualized her sona is. But it's understandable. Her suit (at least the one she posts) isn't sexualized at all so people doing it at cons is completely uncalled for. Honestly as an autistic guy it's really hard to read consent cues, especially in sexual spaces, but I've never been offended when someone says no.
the best rule of thumb is to never assume! asking for consent is a really great way of showing your respect for the other person and prevents any accidental overstepping! even if someone may seem receptive always ask. our society as a whole needs to make big strides into teaching consent and respect for others and the best thing we can do now is continue to learn and do better next time!! /gen
@jaketucker2559 You guys are okay! It's totally fine to say Im hot because it's a fact 😈 especially given I'm using a furry drawing as an avatar as a layer of distance and safety. As long as it doesn't go too far it doesn't bother me.
@@cyaneous227Yeah, I mean of course, I try my best to do that.
