The older I get, the more I love " The Caves Of Altamira ". It almost has a 1940s swing feel to it, yet still sounds modern, 48 years(!) later. Fun. Kudos to our host for the backdrop for both songs Green Earrings is about a professional jewel thief...only the Dan can make that sound cool and uplifting...tasty musicianship per usual...funky might be understatement Two more pieces of the genius mosaic that is the " The Royal Scam " album Got my daily SD fix in, thanks RIP Walter Becker
One of the most enigmatic sax players on display, John Kemmer, who had several interesting albums in the 70’s. A very unique style. Green Earrings has that great drum fill starting at 9:02 and ending with those great chokes. Purdie laying that groove!
It is absolutely without doubt that Steely Dan made the most sophisticated pop music ever to come out of the US. They were extremely subversive too, managing to sneak jazz into the pop charts. We'll never see their like again. 😢 Thanks for another wonderful reaction Brandon!
Two more compelling tracks to make the case for the best Steely Dan album. Caves is excellent and it's mood and sentiments are unique in this album. Earrings is one of my all time favourite Dan tracks. Everything about it so cool. Denny Dias is on top form here. Then just when you think it cannot get much better than this, Elliott Randall sweeps in with an absolutely jaw-dropping solo! And Bernard Purdie is super on the drums, as always. The quality of this music is phenomenal.
I'll assume every song on the album is a shiny A score or higher. Didn't expect such guitar overload and perfection in Earrings. Sure made for a memorable first listen. Both phenomenal indeed. 2 more songs that we definitely agree on!! Thanks
I love seeing younger generations "getting" Steely Dan. The Beatles changed music forever and bands still try to sound like them (and that's a good thing), but no one has come close to sounding like Steely Dan. You can't mimic genius songwriting and perfect execution. Now that I'm in my 60s I appreciate them and listen to them even more than I did in the 70s and 80s. Music isn't as important to me anymore and I'm real picky now. I'm bored with most of the classic stuff that used to get me up and shouting. But I still love and listen to every Steely Dan album. (And Fagen's solo work.)
Well informed and a great taste in music. But then again, Steely Dan is my favorite band of all time and it could be my biased opinion. 😅 One thing is for sure…You sir, got some class!!! Rock on !🤘😎
Yes, they got an extra turn, being in my "12 Days of My Favorite Things"! Glad I did both songs too. Thanks for revisiting your musical past with me today 😊
Brandon, you’re so YOUNG. I’ve been a Dan Fan since the day “Can’t Buy A Thrill” was released in September of ‘72, and dragged my entire family to the record store to buy some new music with my lawn mowing money… Good times. I STILL have that worn-out old album - and every other SD release!
Haha, I'm turning 50 next year, so I'll take that compliment! So cool that you've been hooked on SD for almost 52 years. Thanks for sharing that great memory, and for watching 🙂
Nice to hear these two Steely Dan songs! I always love the vibe you get from them and the awesome musicianship they provide! Still a lot of SD for you to cover…… what job security! Lol Thanks for the great reaction, as always! ❤
Yes, like P. Tree, they always hit in their own unique way. You're right, several albums to cover. That makes me happy. I want so many bands (including this one) to take over in the upcoming coveted weekly-monthly time slots! Ah the woes of being flooded with amazing retro music choices!! 😁
Denny Diaz did the first melodic jazzy solo and Elliott Randall offered the funky, syncopated chops in the second. The quick sassy fills between vocal lines were performed by Walter Becker. What a song!
The rhythm section on both these songs (and most of this album along with most of Aja) are the undisputed kings of funktastic grooves: Bernard Purdie on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass. On these two albums alone, those two laid down more tasty grooves than most do in a lifetime.
Aw, thank you so much for your subscription. I appreciate your support! Here's my SD reaction playlist in case you want to check out my older ones: ruclips.net/p/PL7SqQkBAxc6bCjsbS9LF7T9Tbl8eEADSy
Wonderful! Caves is honestly one of my favorite SD songs. I can easily listen to it over and over again...and sometimes I do because, like you said, it's on the shorter side and is over much too quickly 🥰
I must admit that I was never seriously listening to them way back but knew they were great. I loved the groove of that second song particularly, nice Clavinet, very 70's state of the art musicianship for sure! Not disappointed. Have a nice weekend Brandon!
The lines about a wooly man without a face and a beast without a name, sounds like verses from The Book of Revelation. I was given a CD from a cameraman that worked with the production company that produced American Choppers. I’m a friend of Mikey’s and we went to a party at the cameraman's house. He produced a Hip Hop record titled Boardwalk Empire. When I put it on, the first track started with a sample, the horn intro from The Caves… Blew my mind! Green Earrings sure sounds like a rape or at the very least, a ravaging. The guitar on this track is stunning, freaking deadly.
Green Earrings is about a man that steels his girlfriends jewelry to sell it, because that is who he is. She knows about, and he won't apologize. Then he does it again, and again...
Thanks Brandon, another band I grew up with, sort of ignored because I was obsessed elsewhere. Always quality though. Must have been my low IQ.... That reminds me.....................................?
More masterful funk and groove with superb musicianship as always, paired with their great storytelling.. Thanks for watching! 🥰

Love both songs as expected and I love the cave painting backdrop for sure! Ah, the Dan- a tasty buffet of funk! Glad to help give you your Dan fix 🙂
Nothing better than the Dan.
😀 Love em! Thanks for watching and being first today! 🥇

Agreed!!
Hello. Great analysis there. You're welcome and thanks so much for stopping by!
Well, never is a very long time. So I hate to say “never again”. I bet it will come around again. Might take a century it two, if we’re still around.

GREAT backdrop, Brandon! You put so much care into your reactions. Respect. 😘
Thanks! I really like the cave painting one...Hope your year is starting off great! 💙

Dayum... deep diving into Steely Dan!!! Niiiiiice!!! Been a while since I heard these!!! LOL ❤

We used to use this song to test our speakers back in the 70s

An example of 2 incredible tracks that got/get almost no airplay.

Love ‘the caves’, one of my favourite SD tracks ….never ages.
love both songs love the dan

Oh! I'm happy now.... thanks Brandon 🎶🤩
Woohoo! Their music tends to have that effect as we all know. You're welcome, always a pleasure discovering more Dan. Hope your week is going well!

Your backdrops are always so well chosen and thoughtful - no one else does that detail - respect!
Thank you for that Warren. It's fun picking them to match the song. I appreciate you watching!
Wow…I had a John Klemmer album! Had no idea he had played with the Dan!
Nice tracks, Brandon! 😁👋
Cool, and I had no idea he had a full solo career! He sure sounded great here 🙂
nice
For sure. Thanks so much for watching Jamie!

Caves so cool, both musically and lyrically. Glad you love it too! Thanks Haley..
Love It!
Me too! Thanks so much for watching Michael!

Good choice
Thanks, agree completely. What an album so far! I think I just have 3 left to hear now. Thanks for watching!
Great selections. 💙🎵🎶🎶 🎸🥁🔔🎹🎺🎷📯🎤🎶🎶
Agreed! What a special band..and those session musicians! Always top tier. Happy Friday and weekend!!! 😁
Yes!! Happy Friday and weekend to you. Glad your back!!😀
Weird not having PF Friday haha....Thank you so much 🤗
No PF Friday because of your 12 selections, right?
Yea, but you know I had to keep Genesis in their Sunday spot!

Green Earrings always sounds to me like it could have been on The Crusaders Street Life album (1979). It's Steely Dan leaning in hard on jazz fusion.
Green Earrings is about a man that steels his girlfriends jewelry to sell it, because that is who he is. She knows about, and he won't apologize. Then he does it again, and again...
I leave you comment under Vangelis.
By now 'tis apocryphal, but I'll say it again: a steely dan is to be preferred over and against a flaccid dan, although not literally.
😄....thanks 4 watching!
Thanks Brandon, another band I grew up with, sort of ignored because I was obsessed elsewhere. Always quality though.
