Jazz meets funk, performed by top shelf talent, that's Steely Dan. Almost every song in their large catalog is a great one. Music that makes you smarter just by listening to it.
Your not lying Brother! It DOES make you smarter!
Well said!!
Steely Dan is just so unreal. The music is typically enough for most reactors to love their songs but when you get into the lyrics is when they go to the next level in my book. So cryptic and funny. Best group ever!!!
Royal Scam is still just too good of an album. Too many of the greatest studio cats of all time. Still teaches the rest of us musicians how it's done.
That triple hi-hat cymbal fill is a trademark of Bernard Purdie, he used in some 60’s R&B tracks like with Aretha Franklin.
👑
Is that him in Rock Steady?
Green Earrings is quintessential. Here's my list: FM, Kid Charlemagne, Razor Boy, Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Night by Night, Don't Take Me Alive, Caves of Altamira, Doctor Wu, Sign in Stranger, Haitian Divorce, Pretzel Logic, Home at Last, Jack of Speed, King of the World, Black Friday, Your Gold Teeth, Your Gold Teeth II, Janie Runaway, Green Book, West of Hollywood, Babylon sisters, Bad Sneakers, Boston Rag...
Doctor Wu was their all time best 👍🏻
That island vibe is thick in Razor Boy. Any song of theirs with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on pedal steel guitar is gold.
Great list. I would add Third World Man and Godwhacker. x
Great solos by Elliott Randall and Denny Dias. i know they're not everyones taste, but I can't think of a bad tune that Steely Dan recorded. As a musician, the arrangements and musicianship is second to none.
and that my friend can be said of a very "few".........but Steely is one of those bands. :) Peace & Love
E, W, & F has very sophisticated and varied arranging, but SD can rival anyone.
Why not just write, Earth Wind & Fire? It’s a pain in the ass to have to figure out your use of goddamn acronyms?!
How and why would you write that you know that these two tasty monster musicians are not everyone’s taste? I’ve never heard that kind of criticism regarding the guitarists they use.
@@woodstockorientalrugcleani430 I agree, some of the musicianship is amazing, but the odd media, let's just say I agree.
You guys will love "The Fez" off this album...guarantee it!❤️
Might I suggest a few more Steely Dan songs to blow your mind? Babylon Sisters, Black Cow, Josie, Dr. Wu, Deacon Blues, Monkey in Your Soul. That should get you started or leave your mind in shambles from the explosion. Great reaction y'all!
"Night by Night" is a concise jam by them.
This x 100. Still blows me away that song is so overlooked.
Q: What is your favorite SteelyDan song?
A: The last one I listened to!
For me first place is Peg, which is my favorite song period. Second is Time Out of Mind. And I have a 15 song tie for third!
Imagine, being able to afford the best musicians... to play the brilliant ideas of Fagen and Becker... and spend as much time as you needed to record and produce things until they were perfect. The result? The pinnacle and high-water mark of jazz, blues, and soul based rock. The short "wawa, wawa" sound you were digging half way through was a keyboard called a Clavinet or Clav for short. Usually heard in crazy syncopation and adding punctuation. Probably played by Don himself. In the guitar outro solo by Elliott Randal when he goes ham he steps on an effect pedal called a Flanger (flan-jer). Enjoy the rest of the SD rabbit hole.
Just saw Steely Dan at the Hollywood Bowl last weekend and they were fantastic. RIP Becker, but the bones of the rest of the band have been there for 20+ years now. Super tight and fun. Fagan still got it!
@@guitearist Glad you enjoyed it. We'll be at Wolf Trap here in Virginia on 6/26. Gonna be a great evening.
@@richkurl Awesome! Hope you guys have a blast!
I've never heard a Steely Dan song/album/solo work that I have not been blown away by. These guys are the musician's musicians. Pick any song on any album and you will learn from it. I 'd love to watch you guys deep dive every SD album.
Denny Dias performs the first solo and Elliott Randall does the second one at 11:56, as well as the solo at the end. Elliott Randall is legendary for his guitar solos on "Reelin' In The Years". A+
More from this album, check out: Kid Carlemagne, The Caves of Altamira, Don't Take Me Alive, Sign In Stranger and Haitian Divorce.
Fave album! 🔥
this (Royal Scam) is SD's grittiest album and my fav too.
I'm always surprised when people suggest Caves of Altamira, but I agree 💯
Oh Cmon! just Put the Album on sit back and Enjoy!
That bass, and that Purdie shuffle with the drums! This song is so funky and groovy!
That Purdie Shuffle makes my backbone slip. I don't know what that means, but I'm pretty sure it's true. Best shuffle ever.
Actually not a shuffle at all, Purdie or otherwise. More straight-ahead funk, but Purdie puts it in the pocket and makes it percolate.
It's Purdie but it's not the Purdie shuffle. The Purdie shuffle is on Babylon Sisters and Home at Last
@@sharkmedia5969 Babylon Sisters is one of my favorites!
Steely Dan is such a deep dive! Anyone who loves good music & listens closely can't help but love the DAN! Song's about a thief who can't help himself btw
They have no idea. There are dozens of tunes in that rabbit hole the next one just as good as the last.
Love watching you cats enjoy my favorite band… 67 yrs old and still rocking..!!!
Kid Charmaine has got the funk, and some of the best guitar solo work ever recorded
The Royal Scam might be my favorite Steely Dan album. But it's so hard to tell! Too much to choose from.
Ya'll should all wear Steely Dan t-shirts every time you do a Steely Dan reaction video from now on. In their song Showbiz Kids they actually say "Steely Dan t-shirts" in one of the lines. Plus it's one of their best songs...actually it's FIRE 🔥
Here's a P.S.: Maybe you should put up a community poll. Five Steely Dan songs, and let your loyal viewers pick your next foray into Steely Dan land!
I recommend:
1. Do It Again
2. FM
3. Rikki Don't Lose That Number
4. Reelin' In The Years
5. Deacon Blues
6. Kid Charlamagne
7. Hey Nineteen
8. Any Major Dude
9. Don't Take Me Alive
10. Black Cow
Then everything else in any order over and over.
Gotta do Big Black Cow or Kid Charlamane by Steely Dan. So many amazing songs
I'm glad it's not just me. When I was y'alls age this song did the exact same thing to me. I wore it out on a graduation week beach trip, in 1983 (Dirty N. Myrtle). It still does it. D.Diazzling guitar work!
Absolutely Kid
Suggestions: "Hey Nineteen", "Reelin' In the Years", "Babylon Sister", "FM (No Static at all)", "Rikki Don't Lose that Number", "Don't Take me Alive"
Steely Dan will confound your expectations at every turn.
Try “Peg” next. One of the greatest pop songs ever!
This song is just filthy. Such a great groove.
Denny Diaz solos on "Your Gold Teeth" (1973) from their Countdown to Ecstasy album. It's one of my favorites -- so very groovy.
OMG!There is so much going on in this song!🤯
🙋🏿♀️ I suggest 'Kid Charlemagne'! 🥰 Enjoying the Dan reactions! 🤗 Don't wait so long next time! 😊🐰
You can't go wrong with every track on 'Can't Buy A Thrill' [1972]; 'Countdown to Ecstasy' [1973]; 'Pretzel Logic' [1974]; 'The Royal Scam' [1976], then check out 'Katy Lied' [1975] and the later ones. Bearing in mind I've been into all kinds of music and listening to Steely Dan since the 70's and they never get boring, so much in them.
Love, love, love your reaction, great points and fun grooving ❤️ I’m a massive Dan fan and I can’t wait for the journey, expect the unexpected 😉 Next up Glamour Profession 😎 Take care guys!
I know this song so well because I grew up with it .. and once again, I realize that I have taken for granted how amazing this music is....!!! Thank You for taking the time to appreciate Steely Dan and other amazing artists that have been around for a few decades!!! Sending love from the Memphis area! : - )
Hunt on RUclips and you will find a ‘rhythm section only’ version of this song…and the jam just keeps going. Worth your time.
These are (always...) some of the finest musicians you will ever hear. Bar none.
This group was my jam back in the day! They don't have a bad song.
Brilliant - Can't go wrong with Steely Dan.
Listen to Haitian Divorce. Seen them live a dozen times before Becker passed away and they are sooooo tight. Also check out Donald Fagan's solo albums -- The Nightfly and Kamakiriad are BRILLIANT.
LOL...I was watching for your reaction to Purdie's hi-hat sass 7:37 and then Denny Dias' bridge solo...you didn't disappoint! 😂..Enjoy the ride!
Jammin' ! 👍👍👍
Have never heard that one.
502 Crew 🤘 Thanks.
I can't explain why it took me so long to appreciate Steely Dan. However album by album they might be in top twenty of all time 🍷🍷
I see that you've been told this song is about a thief who can't stop stealing. Try any of the songs off of this album. Or react to the album in its entirety. My favorite album of all time! It's all FIRE! Nice reaction guys, peace. Btw the album cover is of a predatory city hovering, hulking over you. And the depiction of the condition of a man lured to the city, ...the Royal Scam.
Well said Russel! Well said! And I agree, the album is fire! My fav since I first came across it in 1983.
You really went far down the trail. I have never heard this song and i love this band. Man 70's vibe right off the jump! Love the break down at 7:19. Nick has has "stank face" on a lot! This is a great song! You guys had a great time doing this song!!!! Love love love!!!! This, by far. Is the most animated i have seen Nick! So fun!
The guitars along with everything else was just so great. This was a hot one in musician circles back in the day and still is. How about mentioning the other musicians by name as well?…like Chuck Rainey on bass and Bernard Purdie on drums. Check out Rainey's bass during the guitar solos...incredible chops. This was a master class on what a world class rhythm section sounds like and on how everything is structured. You can really get into the weeds on this one, but it’s well worth studying.
Any time you have Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie laying down the groove you have a hit. Great song enjoy the rabbit hole that is Steely Dan, been going down it since the 70s
Edit: great song but not even the best on the album
Only about 60 more great songs from SD's classic period (1972 to 1980) for y'all to experience. Yep, every song they did is fantastic.
The Royal Scam is amazing!
Also FM is solid FUNK!!
I saw them in 1974 in Las Vegas. While I really wish I could sound impressive and tell everyone what a magnificent show it was, I was 13 years old, not really into Steely Dan yet, and with my parents. 20 years later I saw them in San Jose, and could fully appreciate every nuance of every song. Now we get to the part where I tell everyone how magnificent it was.😉
It's my favorite SD song. I push for it every time I get a chance. It's so funky and it just gets better and better as it goes along.
Pharrell is actually a huge SD fan.
I have watched a LOT of your reactions and there are some REALLY GOOD songs that you have said "That's on my play list!!" I would LOVE to see the list since a LOT of the music would be on mine too!
Just started watching you guys!
You are smart to dig into 70s music so much great music in that era.
You crack me up, talking about it being a chase scene because you actually had the chase seen going on live in the back ground lol
You guys are awesome 🎧🎶✌️
IF you were ever going to do a whole Album reaction from a Band, THIS is your Band! Anything from Can't Buy A Thrill till Gaucho would work very well!
Yo yo yo. If you haven’t heard, Steely Dan is every band’s favorite band. You want some deep funk? Check out Black Cow. Want possibly the best guitar riff ever? Bodhisattva. Please please please more Steely Dan!! ❤🙏🏻
Denny Dias was an original member of Steely Dan
Doctor Wu, again, I feel confident you will all like!
Are you crazy? Are you high? Or just an ordinary guy (or girl as the case may be)?
This is my favorite song off what I consider Steely Dan's best album. Every track is fire but the groove laid down by Purdie and Rainey is beyond sick and the guitar work is absolutely sublime.
I love your review of this tune. 3 guitar solos, right? Denny Dias, then Elliot Randall, a bridge, then the outro Randall "under water" solo to close. Yes, professional thief seduces beauty with the green earrings and Greek medallion, then robs her blind with barely a hint of remorse. "Sorry, angel, I must take, what I see" and "Sorry, angel, I get hungry, like a child". He digs her, but ultimately he can't control his impulses, and has no interest in controlling his impulses. You also noticed one of my favorite parts of the song, that brief "Wadup, Wadup" just before the Dias solo. There's no band anything like Steely Dan. Unique, original, and a genre unto themselves.
So over the top good! Funky as all get out. Great jam.
Pharrell is a massive Steely Dan fan too.
"FM", "Babylon Sisters", "Black Cow", "Peg", "Hey Nineteen", "Kid Charlemagne" to start with.
My kids use to call this Sunday morning music 🎶 my kids are in their 30's now✌️
this album rocked my world. it's my desert island disc....
I think the guitar melted
Its a dream on the cover
Been waiting since you did Aja, to do some more Steely Dan, because I was convinced you were gonna love it! This song is so funky and captivating, and totally different from the two songs that you did previously. And that’s one of the best things about this band. No songs are alike. They always experimented with lyrics, style and moods.
It’s such a deep repertoire of great songs to pick from for your next video, and they’re all good. My only hope is that you’ll get to them soon. Anything from their albums in the 1972-1980 run is gold. Maybe Glamour Profession if I had to highlight one particular gem of a song.
Hope to see them return shortly to the channel!
This Entire Album is a Masterpiece. . "Kid Charlemagne" will always keep blowing me away.
Reeling in the Years, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, and Peg are their more commercial hitss
This band will give you the permanent stink face. The DAN reigns supreme
All those ghost notes on Purdy's drums.
Royal Scam is Steely Dan's best album IMO. Green Earrings is awesome. Kid Charlemagne is even better! Hard to believe, but it really is! :D
This song kinda shows their movement towards Aja, which was their next album. The keyboards here are very jazzy and you can just imagine Fagen and Becker deciding to zoom in on their jazzy tendencies for a whole album.
Dreams make sense, it just takes time to learn them
Pharrell is a huge Steely Dan fan
Elliott Randall. Last part of the guitar solo and the outtro solo.
Let that bass bump and thump baby!
Recommended songs:: "Kid Charlemagne," "Don't Take Me Alive," "Deacon Blues," "Black Cow," "Midnight Cruiser," "Reeling in the Years," "Only A Fool Would Say That," "Fire In the Hole," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Any Major Dude Will Tell You," "With A Gun," "Black Cow," "Peg," "Black Friday," "Bad Sneakers," "Daddy Don't Live In New York City No More," "Doctor Wu," "Your Gold Teeth," "Chain Lightning," "Your Gold Teeth II," "Time Out of Mind," "Glamor Profession," "Babylong Sisters," "Hey Nineteen," and just about any other of their songs on any of their albums, Listen to all of my suggestions or a few.
I guarantee yo will not be disappointed with any of them.
Knew you guys would love this!
The album cover art was originally done for an Elton John album that was never released. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker said in an interview that they thought it was the ugliest album cover ever conceived, so they decided to use it for this album.
Van Morrison album, actually (Mechanical Bliss).
I love listening to interviews because they're comedians as well.
Btw, thanks for clearing that up. I've spent too much time looking at it, trying to figure out the meaning.
I request: West of Hollywood, Haitian Divorce, Hey 19, Gaucho and Almost Gothic. That's my top five today.
Tomorrow might be all different. Honorable mention: The Second Arrangement.
Awesome band guys, maybe listen to Kid Charlamagne, Deacon Blue, Black Cow, and Peg ( Michael McDonald on backing vocals) also forgot to mention FM, ( no static at all ) Hey Ninteen there’s too many to list 😀xx
Jewel theif steals his girlfriends earrings and doesn't mind the look on her face when he takes them. Great analysis and reaction gentlemen!
Great and funky reaction guys. Also funny ofcourse.
Kid Charlemagne would be next in the Steely Dan Progression. My Old School would be a suitable step as well.
Chuck Raney, from Cleveland on bass. He's a monster player
Guess Im about the only one thats not crazy about this song but I like about every Steely Dan song. This Is a real good album though.
This is a Dan song that doesn't do it for me either....sigh.
You are finally hearing some if the best musicians the Dan put together, they were the best in the biiz
The Fez & Kid Charlemagne same album. 🔥🔥🔥
My Old School, Pretzel Logic, Don't Take Me Alive, Hey Nineteen, Babylon Sisters are 5 that give you a nice range of styles and greatness. There's only abut 55 more just as good...
This track is about a thief planning to hiest the Girl he's datings jewelry ( Green Earrings) and how it won't make him feel bad at all!
"Royal Scam" among others worthy of reactions. You guys have so much fun.
Yay...glad you revisited Steely Dan...Must do reactions IMO...Black Cow, FM, Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues...pretty much songs off AJA and Gaucho Albums....you'll definitely enjoy!! 👍❤️
Welcome to the Steely rabbit hole. To date you’ve done songs from Can’t Buy A Thrill, Aja, and Royal Scam, or #s 1, 6, & 5 in their catalog. Lots of reactors like to see how bands have progressed historically through the years. Steely Dan breaks that (Pretzel) Logic. Due to the fact that they started off fully progressed from the get go. 1st album, last album, doesn’t matter, genius from Becker and Fagan in all they produced. Keep diving, because as the Eagles said, “they stab it with their Steely knives”, and you’ll enjoy it all.
You need "Steely Dan - A Decade Of Steely Dan"
You guys should react to Kansas, "Dust in the Wind" , "Carry on Wayward Sun" , "Point of No Return"
One badass groove...
Wicked
DAN-TASTIC !
This album is awesome. The title track same name as the album is great.
Ya'll done stumbled on their best song.
Realing in the years.
Steely Dan is a HUGE rabbit hole, but have you done Jazzman by Carole KIng yet? You haven't? Well, what the hell are you waiting for?? You all say you LOVE the sax but you haven't even done a song ABOUT the sax yet? Un-believable! Any Steely Dan song will do but I'm pulling for Deacon Blues. Have a great day!
