Why is it called Ol' Painless? Explaining Every Fallout 3 Unique Weapon

Today, I try my hand at explaining every unique weapon of Fallout 3. I go over their stats relative to their standard version, I go over where they can be found, and most importantly, I go over their relevant references and explain why the unique weapon is named that way. Why is Eugene called Eugene? Why is The Shocker called The Shocker? I've got all (read: most) the answers!
(and yes, that is every unique fallout 3 weapon in the thumbnail)
I do plan on doing this for each Fallout game with unique weapons, but this video took quite a while to script, so it'll be some time before I get to work on those.

I know, what's even harder to believe is that the one-of a kind unique "Alien Blaster" in Fallout: New Vegas is a reference to the energy pistols wielded by the aliens in Fallout 3. I mean, the Blaster in NV is so much more powerful than the Blasters in Mothership Zeta!

My favorite part of any Fallout game is squirreling away all the special named weapons and armor. Putting them all in one container, and maybe using 3 or 4 of them. But look at my collection!

The Occam's razor could also refer to how using a knife in a fight is one of the simplest solutions to the many different ones when found in a combat situation.

Yeah. Generally if your in a fight, even if someone's specifically trained to take down people with knives, there's still a high chance you'll win. Because no matter what, something pointy wins over fists
Big Boss would agree with that, any seasoned CQC master would say a stick, baton or any small hand weapon is the perfect close range weapon cus of the amount of things you can do to control the fight
but a knife is invaluable to any soldier and most don't go out without one lol
i like how Naked Snake/Big Boss used his knife and pistol in combination, the ability to quickly switch between either one as needed.....

Bonus facts: Lincoln's Repeater AND Ol' Painless both have ZERO weapon spread! Making them S tier weapons for Small Guns builds especially in early game. ☺. Thanks for posting this. This was a real treat to watch and I'm ALL FOR Fallout 3 content. Lol. Thanks again.

I’ve always been a sucker for 3’s special weapons. I didn’t always get them each of my play throughs but each has a special place in my heart
I have a play through where I have every unique weapon in the game except Fawkes super sledge(I forgot to grab it in vault 87)
@@damonwandebrch2467 I did the same playthrough but in NV and did it twice. It's way easier in NV since uniques are everywhere, which is prob why Fallout 3's unique weapons more special.
@@TheChosenMoose01 More special? Its the oposite if you ask me, in New Vegas they have real unique look and they have some different attributes not just higher damage or critical chance like most of the times Fallout 3 "uniques" does. But thats only my opinion and no one has to agree.

I think both explanations work...simply it has no meaning its just a pun and also the simplest solution is a knife
I think maybe it’s more on the idea of the person wielding it. I do not know much about him (never played fallout 3), but maybe due to his actions it could lead to him living under the idea of “The simplest answer is the correct answer.” And the razor part is because it’s a blade.
I always felt Vengeance was a nod from the devs to the player for making it through the SANCTUARY for freakin' DEATHCLAWS. Congratulations! Here's "Vengeance" for every stepped-on twig that caused your untimely decapitation.
There is also the Fallout 2 lore where the Enclave destroyed a vault full of friendly sentient intelligence Deathclaws capable of human speech that were once escaped Enclave experiments

The fertilizer shovel might be a reference to how people in tribal stages of civilization used to cover their weapons in feces to infect enemies. Like, if I don't kill him now he still dies later.
Not tribal, that was a common practice for ages, while not necessarily feces, people would store things in dead bodies, or rust to increase chances of infection

My thoughts on the unique weapon names: In Fallout Shelter, Ol Painless’s description says that its used to put down horses, so its possible its high damage output is just a reference to how fast it kills that the enemy barely feels any pain.
The Victory rifle is probably just called that because its victorious in most combat encounters. For a funnier explanation, the target getting knocked down couldve made the previous owner believe he was victorious when in reality the fight wasnt over yet.
Vengeance probably has nothing to do with the enclave or the deathclaws, and its powerful nature it just that of getting revenge on people.
Smugglers end is definitely a weird one, but it couldve also been taken from a smuggler, referencing the end of a barrel.
I thought vengeance was referencing the screams of the ghost of king Lysandus from Daggerfall

Ol' Painless is actually a reference to Old Yeller as it's the nickname of the rifle used to put down the titular dog. The rifle being otherwise used for hunting, a hunting rifle. It's description in Fallout Shelter specifically mentioning putting down animals is another hint at the origin of the reference.

The great thing about Jingwei's shocksword is you can glitch an infinite durability version of it out of the simulation. Use the Gary glitch and during the final battle against jingwei you have to shoot his sword out of his hand with the gauss rifle. Then you pick it up and it goes in your inventory

The Alien Captain’s Pistol could be a reference to the Duck Foot’s flint lock pistol. It was a pistol with 3 or more barrels splayed out. He design was intended to suppress ship mutinies since the weirder could theoretically hit more than one person at a time.

The Terrible Shotgun and Xuanlong assault rifle are the two guns I always go for in every playthrough they are my favorite
The Samurai's Sword is called that because it belongs to the NPC Toshiro Kago from Mothership Zeta DLC. Dude is a samurai from feudal japan who was abducted by the aliens.
I did a TTW playthrough one time with the goal of getting every unique weapon/item. Finished fallout 3 with all weapons and armors (aside from ones you cant get in a single playthrough), bobbleheads (all the ttw exclusives aswell), and a lot of unique misc items. Got about halfway through new vegas before I lost interest, but my stash at the sink is legendary.

I'm fairly certain the Pint Sized Slasher is based off Halloween. In the remake, Michael Myers starts killing as a child, while wearing a clown mask as he kills his sister, her boyfriend, and his step-father.
He does that in the original, it’s the first scene.

@@FoxSenpie Rewatch the original. In the opening, Michael Myers kills his sister with a kitchen knife while wearing a clown costume, _including_ a mask. Almost the entire scene is shown from his perspective, and you can see the eyeholes on the mask. It ends with him walking outside to his parents, who, after noticing the bloody knife in his hand, take the mask off and ask him about what he had just done. It's the first scene of the film.
Worth noting that being worth less caps is actually an advantage at repair merchants, as cheaper weapons cost less to repair.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention how Biwwy is a reference to the famous black child character, Buckwheat from the old black and white tv show, Little Rascals.
The character was made famous (and adored) for his iconic speech impediment, the same kind used by Biwwy in Fallout 3. The actor who played the character in the old tv show, William Thomas Jr, went by the nickname “Billie”, and thus Biwwy is an homage to both the character, as well as the then young actor who played him.

I worked on a young girls Jeep, that she just bought, where the e’s were shockers. poor girl made a remark about getting honked at all the way to the shop for an oil change. I told her I knew why and to look up shocker, I’ve never in my life seen a girl that embarrassed. She looked like she was going to cry! I’m surprised the jerk that sold it to her didn’t say word. Some friends of mine replaced the logos for free, poor girl had to wait a week though.

I like to think that the character you play as is coming up with these names when they're approaching them, maybe in some cases, something about it stands out to the rest of the weapons that we can't see (even tho it's most likely not that deep but i just like to see it that way)
That's literally the way I've always seen it.For the majority of these guns,your character has no right to have even known the guns name anyhow.Its not like there's a plaque on display explaining the majority of these weapons names,and origins.

Having the Xuanlong Assault Rifle named after the dragon of the North and winter makes a lot of sense since the major escalation between China and the US was due to the Battle of Anchorage in Alaska pre-Great War
Paulsons revolver is an amazing weapon in ttw with 44 hollow points being added. Every pellet getting a chance to crit plus cowboy perk and hollow points shreds through any lightly armored enemy
ol' painless is an ol' yeller reference. It's a reference to what the boy says before he shoots his own dog. "Don't worry boy, i'll make it painless"
One thing about Destabilizer, it doesn't use the same animations as the regular Disintegrater, instead it uses the Plasma Pistol animations. Which tells me it was a literal last minute addition and since there is a Unique Plasma Pistol in Mothership Zeta, its possible that someone could have messed up the anim files.
My guess for the shocker is it was to be used by single,childless,petless people in home defense as a tazer
Atomic pulverizor is the beast weapon in F3.....
as mentioned the AP cost is really good., more shots in vats, it's the lowest cost AP weapon of the game, using it with grim reaper's sprint and Action Boy allow the best usage
take all your shots on one target get a kill AP resets do the same to the next....best weapon on game...it makes mince meat out of deathclaws....it's a game breaker and it's glorious!!

The Shocker fits better with the superhero, because if you think about it, the Power Fist is pneumatic, it uses blasts of air to move the pistons and strengthen the damage. This could just be speculation but it make sense to me.

OLD STAR. A super nova is when an OLD , dying star can’t keep its equilibrium of nuclear explosions in the core and gravity pushing in on it when it runs out of helium and hydrogen to use and when it starts fusing iron it implodes then explodes leaving a white dwarf or other mega dense star . They are small. It could also produce quasars and magnetars and such but if the star is massive enough it could create a black hole .
The Protectron's Gaze VATS behavior makes sense. Most of the unique weapons are pre-war military and would take such technology into account. The mechanist is a product of the wasteland and he doesn't have a pip boy, so no VATS and no accounting for it in the weapon. Lore-wise, this one makes perfect sense.
Interesting note on Lincoln’s repeater: that bit about a gift to influence Lincoln to buy more of a particular rifle did happen. But, it was not for a Henry repeater for which lincolns repeater is modeled. Rather it was a spencer carbine, the Henry’s direct competitor. The spencer was a technological dead end though whereas the Henry birthed a long lineage of lever action rifles.
100% certain it's based on the 1860 model of Henry repeating rifle, as this model would eventually lead to the Winchester repeating rifles. Lincoln's repeater is extremely similar to the Henry rifles, and looks nothing like, nor functions at all like a Spencer rifle.
Dude, the Metal Blaster is _the_ endgame weapon _unless_ you use VATS. In VATS, the shot spread becomes insane, but when used in regular gameplay it's surprisingly accurate and easy to hit enemies with basically all shots. Totally overpowered, I love it.
i wonder if the creation of the miss launcher is what led to grenade launchers being in new vegas? seems like a very obvious throughline since its not like 3 had grenade launchers. they just took that code and made it a cool weapon
There technically *is* a grenade launcher in Broken Steel's files, but it's just a combat shotgun that fires frag grenades.

Just one thing you missed on Drone Cannon EX-b is that projectiles are lobbed where as the normal drone cannons projectiles have travel time. Also Wazer Wifle could also be a reference to Elmer Fudd.
I'm a total loot goblin in video games as I will hoard every unique weapon, outfit, and item I can. I'm having one hell of a time in Even Ring that's for sure.
I've been playing this game off and on for years and I haven't heard of 75% of these special weapons. It's insane just how much replay value you can find in an old game from 2008.
Obviously your not playing the game right cuz literally 90% of the weapons are found during exploration or quest items.

Paul’s revolver, is also a unique model besides not having a scope, look closely and you’ll see the cylinders are not the same. Paul’s is enclosed and you can’t see the .44 rounds while it’s in the gun, where as all the other .44’s you can see the casings of the rounds in the game.

I really love fallout 3 and nv special weapons, they actually feel unique. I hate to throw shade on fallout 4, but the special weapons are just downright disappointing when compared to previous entries in the fallout series.

Honestly playing Fallout 3 again on my Xbox One S is pretty nostalgic and looks pretty good honestly it's just better looking and I never actually got a chance to play it while being updated with an internet so it's pretty good and fun. Also I love old painless I got to get them early next time.
The fertilizer shovel’s effect and what the guy says “don’t cut yourself on it it’ll make you sick” is a reference to the disease tetanus where it can be contracted through cutting yourself with a rusty object

Mauler - another reason it may have been named that is because in 1984, Pittsburgh had a USFL team called the Maulers, mostly likely a partial reference to their owner, Edward J. DeBartolo who owned a lot of malls. The team lasted one year...the USFL 3 years. Ed's son, BTW, owned the SF 49ers for 23 years.

The hunting rifle referenced in the title of this video, is *not* referencing the name of the minigun in Predator. Rather, it's referencing the same weapon that said minigun is named in reference to. In Old Yeller, the hunting rifle that was used to put down the titular dog after he caught rabies, was named "Ol' Painless."
And it was named that because bein' dropped by a shot to the head is a lot quicker and more painless than a lot of death's one could suffer on a farm in the days the movie was set in.
The perforator is one of my top favorite weapons in the fallout series. It became one of my first go to weapons whenever I ran across some wasteland scum.

Btw, you don't need to say "point (number)" when talking about weapon caliber, just say the number. Just "32 Pistol" rather than "Point 32".
The shocker may not seem to use blasts of air but power fists use hydraulic pressure to function so kinda

I feel like "Victory Rifle" is a reference to when an appointment is knocked down in combat of multiple forms it's deemed a victory. War, boxing, etc.
Edit: Slow Burn is possibly not using flamer fuel but could be a Napalmer, using napalm instead it would burn slower making more damage.

The reason why Butch's toothpick has less durability is actually revealed in prologue section as it is revealed that Butch's toothpick originally was a spring-loaded switchblade. James and Jonas took the spring from the switchblade to use it for the BB gun you get during the prologue in that you can use during your escape a vault 101 since the spring had been removed you have to manually open the toothpick every time therefore damaging the mechanism therefore making it less durable than a normal switchblade. The increased damage makes sense in this context as well since it's been in a vault and is obviously sharpened in comparison to all the other switchblades in the wasteland it makes sense that it has more damage as well because sharpening a blade makes it deal more damage.

I'd imagine the 667 hits is in a reference to the fact Paradise Falls is basically a type of Hell and, for sure, the effect upon breaking of the weapon being the reference stated in the video around 17:00
The Captain's sidearm alien blaster is actually meant to reference duck-foot pistols that captains in the age of sail used that had multiple barrels so that multiple people could be shot at once in the event of a mutiny.
The “pint sized slasher” is a direct reference to Halloween and Michael Myers because his first kill he used a large kitchen knife just like the FO3 knife and wore a clown mask and was just a little kid.

When I think of the reservist rifle i think it is a joke on how you will have to be going into your reserve's of ammo more often due to the smalls mag size and the faster shooting speed
If you're talking Star Wars, the "End" in the name of Smuggler's End could refer to the phrase "business end of my barrel." The phrase refers to the front end of the gun barrel where the shot comes out, so the name could be referring to the business end of the smuggler's gun barrel where the laser shot comes out.

i think paulson's revolver shooting pellets rather than a normal bullet may be a reference to the Le Mat revolvers from us civil war fame, that besides the 8 bullets they could carry also had a small shotgun barrel
It most likely refers to trick shooters from the old west using modified rounds that fired birdshot instead of slugs. This is how they could consistently hit plates out of the air and the like. Even when firing from the hip.

Atomic Pulverizer actually means the same thing as atomizer, it pulverizes things to atoms, or in other words, atomizes.
Same with Destabilizer and Disintegrator I imagine.
