July 2014 my hubby started passing blood in his pee. He went to the docs to have the usual pee sample etc. But the doc emphasised to him that if the blood stopped & restarted, got worse or continued for more than a further couple of days he must go to A&E. The blood got progressively worse & became very dark & lots of it. That was life-saving advice. Hubby ended up having numerous tests & scans etc he was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer & had his right kidney removed 3 months after the blood in his pee was first noticed. It did become Metastatic spreading to his liver, ending up having 70% of his liver removed, his Gall Bladder & 2 'pizza wedges' out of his right lung in 2016 & last year he had a further 2 'pizza wedges' removed from his right lung. He was also diagnosed with MDS in 2017. The end of 2015 we were advised hubby would be lucky to see 5 years. I'm very very happy to say hubby is still here over 7 years later certainly because of the very wise advice given by his doc in July 2014 - HD saved his life ❤

Great life-saving video on getting hematuria checked out promptly! I was 65 and healthy, when I noticed occasional urethral burning and pinkish urine. Being a non-smoker (except for second hand) I procrastinated for weeks, thinking it was a UTI or bicyling-related. When I then saw a rice-like piece in my urine, I had a CT and a Cysto, showing two 7mm tumors. When my HMO scheduled surgery for 6 weeks out, I jumped to a nearby NCI-designated cancer center, where two low-grade stage-Ta tumors were removed two weeks later, and all was then well for 3+ years, despite faint periodic initial-stream blood found to be from an enlarged prostate. Then 9 months ago, an annual surveillance cysto showed a new Ta tumor, this time high grade, for which I had a second TURBT followed by periodic catheter instillations of gemcidabine. All seems well for now, but I wish I had gone in for evaluation at the immediate onset of initial symptoms!

My dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer in his eighties. He had frequent urination, and then blood in his urine. The blood was dark red. His doctor did a CT scan and saw a mass on his bladder wall . At one time he bled heavily and needed a transfusion. He couldn't do surgery to remove the mass because of his weakened state. His doctors said that the surgery could be risky for him. He had to be taken back and forth to hospital to have his bladder irrigated whenever the bleeding was heavy. He died five years after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. Thanks for sharing this video.

Back in 2005, after moving to a new location, I literally peed out blood. It was total blood, not just a little, and looked like an artery might have burst somewhere! After being examined by a specialist, he found absolutely nothing wrong, and said it could have been from a passed kidney stone, and If it happened again, to come back. I haven't had a reoccurrence since, but I've often wondered why that happened! If it was a kidney stone, the pain is supposed to be worse than that from childbirth, and I didn't feel any pain at all! Strange things happen!

But no irregularities in my bladder. Nonetheless, I do want to add something: I got a bladder infection afterward, and so had to go back to the doctor to get that treated with antibiotics.

I was airlifted to a big city hospital after receiving 12 units of blood at our small country hospital, I had internal bleeding caused when I had pancreas surgery. I was unconscious for at least two days at the big hospital. When I regained conscious the nurse told me I was being discharged. It was 3:00 pm and I couldn't get a ride. The hospital did not want me there, so they hired a Lyft driver to take me 50 miles to home. On Friday I called my VA nurse and told her I was still bleeding out my butt, she told me to go back to the hospital. I think they just didn't want me dying in their hospital. I bleed out three times before two doctors did an experimental surgery up my femoral artery and tied off the wound with wire. Two years later I'm regaining my health.
I can't help but think the hospital made a conscious decision to send me home hoping I'd just die there.

How dare he minimize the pain involved and laugh about it when some people are traumatized. Doctors who are very disconnected from patients’ pain seem to always use the “it’s quick” excuse for not wanting to take the extra effort for proper pain management. I just went through cancer, and was shocked at what doctors consider acceptable for inflicting pain. I never went back for any follow ups because of the way they downplay your suffering through procedures. They went to school to learn a skill and yes we need them, but if they know they’re hurting us and don’t help, then they don’t care about us. How dare they make light of it like this doctor. I am possibly going to die because of doctors like that. 😢

I hear this over and over and over again. You can obviously observe and hear your patience while you’re performing a cystoscopy so you cannot honestly say that it is not a traumatic experience. Granted not every patient such an excruciating experience, but I would say it is the majority at least in males. So once, and for all can patients get a straight answer about what this mysterious duration of pain that doctors accept and are taught. There is some kind of agreement among medical professionals that the intensity of the pain is only important if it lasts a certain undefinable duration. What is that duration?

    • @TalkingWithDocs

Hi Pete. We aren't urologists but they do use local anesthetic for the procedure and some patients receive sedation. It would really depend on the patient, the surgeon and the nature of the procedure. Sorry for the pain you experienced and we agree that limiting this should be a primary goal

after a gross hematuria - which scared the daylights out of me - I had it done - cystoscopy - uncomfortable but definitely not painful - the numbing gel was the worst part and that's about as painful as a dental shot. you can definitely tell when the scope moves past the prostate. and if they fill/drain the bladder for clarity - you feel like you have to pee but not to worry.

Wish I had seen this video weeks ago. Im 75. Had Microscopic blood in my urine. Urethra had scar tissue from prostate radiation. Very painful test. Found cancer in my bladder , surgically removed and chemotherapy in my bladder for about i hour. They removed the scar tissue and left a catheter for a week. I now have to do a self catheter 2x a week to hopefully keep urethra open. Sounds easy and clear cut, it is not. It’s scary, painful only because of the scar tissue. Took awhile to learn the self catheter routine. Which continues to be painful but less as time goes by. Will be checked every 3 months. Im an ex smoker and a Vietnam Veteran. The VA now considers bladder cancer as a presumptive illness related to agent Orange exposure. One thing I have been doing is talking openly to my 3 grandsons about the bladder cancer the prostate cancer and throat cancer I’ve had. Making sure they know what needs to be checked out medically.

Or, could microplastics perhaps damage the urinary tract over time? If so, would you suggest a kidney biopsy to attain a clearer diagnosis? Would be helpful to know more about this.

I told my doctor who had me give a urine sample but heard nothing back. Over the last 20 years I've been told I have reduced kidney function, and I also survived non Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014 -15 after r-chop chemo, and since then I've had a semi chronic cistitis. I'm a 78 year old woman. I surmise that the recent bleeding episode was a kidney stone although I havent been assured of that but it seems likely to me. Thanks for this topic. I feel reasured.

I'm 44 and relatively fit. I did some very strenuous work for 6-7hrs non stop in the heat. The water I brought tasted bad so I couldn't drink it. I only had about 20oz of water that entire time and I was drenched in sweat. I felt a pain in my kidney and took a pee. It was pretty alarmingly dark. I drank a ton of fluids and it did lighten up some. Today, 12hrs later I had visually noticeable blood in my urine. I don't have any pain or discomfort and I know I really overworked myself, I am going to wait a few days and if it doesn't completely clear up, I'll head to the doctor's office. I really need to pay better attention to what I am doing to my body. It provides and naturally I take it for granted. 😬

In 2020 and 2021 I was on unemployment and had time on my hands. I began to collect whiskey, and began drinking a fair amount too. It was fun. I was 65 in Aug 2022, and one day I couldn't pee. Went to the ER got a catheter and my urine was dark red like Merlot with huge clots of coagulated blood. After several hours it was clear yellow, but still passed long stringy clot and globs of coagulated blood. Continued occasionally for 2 weeks. Something had happened upstream, but all the test like the MRI, and the CT Scan, blood, urine,... all came up negative, and I felt fine. I stopped ALL alcohol, and sugar(Hyperinsulinemia is an issue with BPH), and went Carnivore Diet. 3 months went by and my Urologist was insisting the only remedy was surgery. Would not do a trial without catheter when I asked him to. On the way home I stopped and got the syringe I needed to deflate the balloon on the Foley Catheter and removed it myself. That was last November of 2022, 11 months ago. No surgery, no meds. Beef, Bacon, Butter, Eggs, Cheese. I ate no bread or potatoes or rice, or any carbohydrate for 6 months. It's magic.

About a year ago, I sought out a new primary care physician, after which I had a routine physical with that physician. Two things showed up. Trace blood in my urine and a high PSA count. I was sent to a urologist.
My prostate was biopsied, and early stage cancer was found with the amount confirmed with an MRI as well. I also had the cystoscopy of my bladder and ultrasound procedures of my kidneys to confirm if my cancer had spread outside of the prostate and to find the source of the trace blood in the urine. Thankfully, there was no spread or other serious issues found.
Of all the procedures my urologist conducted or ordered, the only one I had an issue with was the MRI, my being somewhat claustrophobic. Aside from the natural fear of the unknown and the waiting time between the ongoing tests, the actual procedures were far less invasive than expected.
Don't fret routine physicals or medical tests. Had I done so, I may not have discovered my cancer until it was much worse. I'm under active surveillance for my cancer as it is generally slow growing. This entails updated PSA tests and prostate biopsies as needed. If things worsen, then more aggressive treatment will be sought. My urologist is now a friend to me and not someone to avoid.

Me, 50+, VA ONLY for medical coverage. I have enlarged prostate (3-6x normal and doc has no idea why, no cancer markers and no pain, just friggin HUGE) and 3-4 yrs ago I had very red colored urine at the very start of stream with chunks and clots then went to rust then normal. We had just changed my pain pill and it did a number on me, I was dizzy and started pissing clots out with strings of blood . Went back to OG pill and all good. They did the scope of bladder down the pee hole and its not that bad, just felt pressure.
Current day, I have major back problems and I never thought my kidneys could be the issues. However, Lately I had water retention in my legs, I have been a kb warrior for awhile now and didnt think anything of it. Started drinking more water, laid off the monsters, got off the Meloxicam and now only RX is pain and bp med at lowest mg. Started to get dizzy yesterday and today started pissing blood again. it was rust colored at start then normal yellow from vitamins. in eve, it was REALLY BLOODY at start of stream, like I cut myself and poured it n there. I went back to drinking a TON of water, I use a 24oz metal canteen bottle and am trying to drink one every hour or two which I felt was the reason my legs stopped swelling due to proper hydration, but who knows. Maybe its the mushrooms Im taking and those did lower my bp to normal range after a month or two of using them. I would be 155/90 most exams and had to really sit and do deep breathing to get to 140ish to be able to leave. Last check was 133/80 my weight is horrible at 250. The mushrooms brand is called InForce. Many people have had good results, I feel its a combo of them and not drinking monsters so often.

When I had gross hematuria, my urine looked like coffee. Seriously! Talk about scary. I had the cystoscopy and decided then and there that anything that starts with a C and ends in -scopy is no fun whatsoever. But the cystoscopy wasn't terrible. I've had Paps that were worse. I had my Prostate removed at 46 then had Radiation on the prostate bed 3 years later...a few years after that i was seeing blood in my urine, this has been happening off and on for over nearly 4 years now. Ive had 2 workups over that period and the consensus of opinion is that is the damage that was caused on the lining of my bladder from the Radiation. It's infrequent but then it'll happen for weeks but not huge amounts...Weak blood vessels that get aggravated. So if anyone else in the same position as me can at least see this and maybe relate(But see your GP!)...i'm now 57 and perfectly fine with no blood at the moment. I actually don't freak out like did when i 1st experienced this nonetheless it's an alarming sight lol

Had gross hematuria that scared the heck out of me. Wnet through urine testing, ultra sound that found a small lesion ad a cystoscopy that confirmed the fact of a polyp in the bladder. Scheduled a TURB procedure to remove the polyp. The initial cycstoscopy was very uncomfortable mainly because you are nervous and very tense with anticipation which does not do anything to ease the passage of the scope. The follow-up cystoscopy was much less painful given that you know it will be somewhat painful but for a very short time and you are able to be more relaxed thus easing the passage of the scope. Anyway, polyp was removed and found to be cancerous but of a low grade slow growing variety with no muscle invasion. Just follow-up cystoscopies now to keep an eye out for recurrence .
