Great list MC! I have a few of those and a few of them I want. They're all good knives!
I am 62 y.o. I found a buck 110 in the seat of a 707 jet airliner when I was around 12y. O. I got to keep it.
Buck 110 was introduced in 1963 and was one of the first heavy duty locking folders, if not the very first.
I love my DLT Buck 110 in 20CV, if you like the 110 and want it in something superior to the 420HC, DLT has them in S30V, S35VN and 20CV, all of those models are sub $100. 20CV with a BOS heat treat for 97.95 yes please !
First knife I carried everyday, after my SAK, and BoyScout knife. And my dad still has one from the 70s or 80s
Ash Merch how does the diamond wood rosewood look in person?
@@TheJeffFortner it's not as shiney as the pictures, but mine looked awesome. The nickel bolsters looked amazing! Crazy that I'm carrying a knife without a pocket clip in 2020, well one of them in my rotation but still. I was extremely impressed with the build quality, I immediately battoned it through a pressure treated 2"x4". It had no noticeable effect on the knife. I was suprised it didn't even scratch the blade... I am 110% (😉) impressed. The best push cutter I own, came extremely sharp. I believe it will see use in field as my skinning knife this year. I'm suprised this knife isnt more expensive and is the reason I'm selling my Spyderco Police 4 in K390
Opinel knives stood the test of time.130 years old and still going strong.
You missed the knife that started the "modern" folder craze. The Spyderco Endura and Delica since they came out together. Only physical change is the clip being detachable and not molded into the handle. All other changes are manufacturing processes and not design.
Great video though. Made me think and wonder why I let this 1st generations go.
I didn't necessarily miss them. They're great models and were popular for a long time, but their current popularity i think is vastly overshadowed by a lot of these on the list. Its arguably a lot harder now for a 10 - 20 year old knife to be SUPER popular still. Hence some of the other knives I chose. If this were a top 20 list, then ya. For sure 👍
The first knife is NOT the "fighter". It's just the standard Kabar "USMC". Sorry about that!
The Buck 110,,,,the 1st lockback folding blade. Everything comes from it👍👍👍😎
the best thing I can afford on this list is the Opinel...
Save up for an Ontario rat two you can snag one for 20 bucks
The Benchmade 940 was first released at blade show in 2000.
Makes sense. I got my 710 when I was 14 (20 years ago) and I remember considering the 940 at the time. I just got the 940-2, while my 710 is beat up but still humming along.
Hence the titanium 20th anniversary edition released this year.
@@Nkdc333 WISE CHOICE, there's just something about the 710! I own 2 of them and one 940, I love the 710's and don't for the life of me know why they are discontinued!
The Buck 110 was the knife every fireman in my department carried in 1976. I lost track of mine over the years. It was my first hard use knife and I sure wish I still had it.
Speaking of the r2d2, I think you should check out way of knife and edc gearhouse. They do mods but also do some cool stuff with the rats. They have something called the rat builder, where you can custom order a rat 1 or 2. You can even get titanium, or just different blade finishes, carving, lasering. It’s pretty cool
Crud Muffins I never heard of them. Thanks for sharing. I have to check them out. Sounds fun!
I have to get the American Lawman at some point. Uncle Randy would be happy you included the 110. I think the 110 is older than I am.
😂😂😂 finally someone said it, I personally think all Spyderco's look like dead birds. You're the best!
I think the buck 110 came out in maybe '63. DLT also used to have an Auto 110, don't know if they still do.
I really think the Spyderco Endura/Delica series deserves a place on this list. They were released and 90 or 91 and had a massive influence on the life world. They were also the inspiration for bench made to release the grip Tilian. Another series of knives that I feel should be represented here are the Kershaw/canyon “onion “knives; particularly leak and chive.
Probably. Call it #11 👍
Agreed. I also think the Native and maybe the Dragonfly win out over the PM2 in terms of staying power. The PM2 is great, but in it's latest form, it's only been around for 10 years. As opposed to 23, 26, and 30 years for the Endura/Delica/Dragonfly/Native.
But... factor in current popularity. That was one of the main elements of this list. The pm2 is undeniably more popular, and maintains its relevance. Thats why we see so many sprints. It isn't just time.
Cold Steel American Lawman, could be one of the best edc knives you can carry...YMMV.
Sold mine. Didn't fit my hand. Front finger groove was too big for one finger and too small for two. So that point between the grooves would end up poking the middle of my finger. The recon 1 is a much better choice for me, fits my hand like a glove and if I could only have one folder for the apocalypse, it's the one I'd pick.
Great video man. I have a 940 from 2000. Love it. Was my first knife that was actually a knife lol.
the 940 came out 17 years ago. I bought one one my 20th birthday, and it had JUST come out that week
I’ve owned 150-200 production knives. MT Socom Elite (manual) is my favorite. I’m not a fan of big knives (even though 6’4, 270lbs) but it’s close to perfect. High quality, carries well and tough as nails. It’s been around a long time.
This is a great list. I own most of these.
Great vid buddy! I would also add a GEC blade in there.👍
I love the 940, I just wish it was like $30-$40 cheaper
i want a 940 so bad but holy moly they are overpriced, like all benchmades.
@@kylehiebert1688 actually that is a really neat looking knife and reasonably priced. i would buy it right now if it werent outta stock
also that must be old cause they arent that cheap anymore haha i thought ide just see what they are on ebay. like 140ish now
The 940 just had the 20 aniv model offered. Neat knife ! You should have had a case peanut, maybe a 120 years .
Current popularity is a factor here. So ya the Case Peanut was a great model for a long time, but its outshined by everything here when that's factored in.
The peanut is a top seller for case .
Right. For Case. But I don't think it's as popular as the ones listed here.
At some point I'll have to get my hands on a Sebenza (but I almost want an Inkosi more) and an American Lawman. I'm not sure why none of the knife shops near me have a single Cold Steel
Cold steel recon 1, cold steel leatherneck sf and the Gerber LFM II has stood up as well
Paramilitary 2 was a knife i never thought I'd love, but here we are!
I have experienced 4 knives on the list.. owned 3. Love it... Don't know why but I have always wanted that Ka-bar USMC up in my closet just to have it.
Also Laguiole stood the test of time..almost 200 years old!
I think that is a very fair list. They are all iconic. I have a bunch of them. I think the KA-BAR was a great choice for the fixed blade. They all seem to be around forever.
Cool vid. Probably would have put the CRKT M16 on there in place of the American Lawman. Cheers 🍻
That certainly is a good point. I had forgotten about the m16 👍
....opinel,even if its dull, still cuts an apple.
cuts.
...not a pry bar...
I don't think that all the others folders can do it.
And ,by the way is an historical piece in Museum of Art in Paris.
Great video and alot of great blades my buck 110 is still my go to when I head to the woods great heavy duty folder rat 1 is a frequent go-to for an edc and the sak classic is always on my keys and definitely some on the list I'm gonna be checking out
DLT Trading has a Buck 110 exclusive in CPM-20CV... Its by FAR (to me) the best traditional pocket knife... yes better than the schrade, case and GEC knives the only knife that can even see the 110 in 20CV is the Benchmade Proper. The Buck 110 has to be one of if notes the most beautiful pocket knife ever made
I tried to like the griptillian,it just felt cheap, stuck with the Henry/McWilliams
Nice list for sure !!
Buck 110 1964
Buck 112 1969
Super classic American made knives
Got a small fortune in knives but the delica 4 is always in my pocket ! It’s perfect!
agreed about the opinel, so unsexy but really functional and ridiculously affordable
940 just had its 20th anniversary thats what the Ti with red standoff and thumbstud was all about and the Buck was in the 60s 63 I think
Yeah, I have an Opinel that sits on my shelf. I have a Victoranox Champion that I bought a couple of years more than 40 years ago.
Hay MC you can now get an automatic Buck 110! You can get those in the fancy variants too (handle material, blade steels, and bolsters)! I have the original and it is iconic!
The 110 comes in auto now as well. Great video MC!
Only reason to own a 110 is the grind. Actually it’s super thin behind the edge with the deep hollow grind. Probably 15 thousandths or less.
Interesting list. The only one I would disagree with is the Rat. One thing I do notice about all of them except for the Rat and the PM2 is that they have clean, simple lines that make them as attractive as they are functional. They are just classic, iconic designs.
I think these knives are also the 'everyman's knife'. Not sure if a mid-tech like the Sebenza is a good fit for this list.
This list didn't have a price criteria. It was simply "unchanged design over a long period of time" and "still incredibly relevant/popular". The Sebenza fits that definition perfectly. Price/classification has nothing to do with it.
*edit* - the Sebenza isn't a midtech. It's a very high end production knife.
Goes from an opinel from 1890s a true test of time, to a ten year old knife 😄 still great list
USMC KBAR was never issued in that balck "tini" blade color..mine is grey carbon 1094 or 1080 i think
R Sjr Ka-Bars come with a Parkerized finish, not black ti.
Considering the fact that Victorinox makes "Swiss Army Knives" then perhaps the Soldier model might be the oldest in their lineup. I'm not sure but, seems to make sense. Oops, went to research it found out that model has undergone some serious changes, however the Spartan model seems to be what the Soldier was.
Isn't the ka-bar a rat tail tang? Aka something you wouldn't want for a utility knife especially one that large
Yes. "Can be used as" and "should be used as" are two completely different things. I chose my words carefully. Despite the thin tang, these knives have proven themselves pretty thoroughly. Not only was this knife used extensively in WWII, but if you look it up on Wikipedia, Ka-Bar actually lists it as a fighting/**utility** knife.
Good list. Like em or not, they're still here for a reason.
The buck 110 has an auto version I've had my eye on
Well for the Benchmade 940, the 940-2001 came out to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 940. That came out early this year i think. I never liked the 940 until I got one a week or two ago, so I'm not an expert. The Sebenza 21 has become my grail of the week because I realised they are discontinued. I have an Umnumzaan and love it, but I prefer the traditional lockup of the 21 a great deal over the ball lock up. So the race is on for me to obtain a black micarta small insingo 21 and a large black micarta drop point 21. They're getting scarce.
Michael E Sebenzas come with micarta scales? I thought they were only available in titanium.
@@leighchristopherson6598 well not scales, just inlays. The micarta inlays stand proud a bit over the titanium. I was able to handle one in my local knife store before the 21s disappeared. The micarta inlays feel very good, and very attractive to me. At the time I bought something else instead. Kicking myself now. Large 21 drop point with black micarta is strictly a secondary market find now. Although places like DLT still have the small 21 drop point Black micarta, and even a large 21 in natural micarta. Or you can get the exclusive red linen micarta 21s at knivesshipfree. For me though the blasted scales and stonewashed blade with the black micarta inlays is where its at.
@@leighchristopherson6598 I almost forgot, knifeart has the exclusives that do have a solid carbon fiber show scale with the blasted titanium lock side. So i guess there is one sebenza that isn't all Ti
Maybe the victorinox Tinker 🤔 but the classic definition does
Not being a dick, but you said the Buck 110 wasn’t ground very well and was kind of thick BTE, but I’m pretty sure it’s actually pretty thin BTE because of a fairly deep hollow grind. I’ve never owned one, I’m just going off what other people say. Just wanted to let you know. Another great list. Thanks Merman. 👍🤘
Benchmade 940 was released in 2000
In 2017 Opinel manufactured 5,000,00 knives
Thanks for the video.
Good lord!
What about A G Russell K93?
Opinel - circa 1890
I mean.. the Spyderco Native made it's debut 13 years before the PM2 (7 years if you count the original Paramilitary), and the Endura/Delica came out a full 20 years before the PM2. So if we're talking about knives standing the test of time (while still enjoying great popularity), those win out for sure. That said, it's a good list, just have to slightly disagree with you on that one.
Current popularity is a huge factor in this list. It's not just time overall or popularity during any given time period. This list would include 100s of models if were the case. Current** popularity AND time spent unchanged is the criteria.
XM-18?
Too many changes. Current gen is only 2 years old.
MC I own 2 American lawmen and both came with an offset edge apex. Like a 20 degree on one side and a 25 on the other. Is that done on purpose from them? Thanks
Crkt does the same asymmetric grind on a lot of it's blades. Handy for right-handers
The Spyderco Delica. The Kershaw Leek.
I own 7 of the 10 not too bad! I don’t have a USMC, SAK or Cold Steel.
Now you often read something like: "I have my grandad's Buck 110, he carried that knife for over 30 years." In 40 years time people will be saying something like: "I have my grandads Microtech Halo vi, grandpa carried and used that knife for 30 years." :)
kuh-BARR?!
I’ve actually never heard it pronounced like that! 😂
I believe it’s “KAY-bar”.
Osborne came out in the early 90’s I think
No love for Randall fixed blades?
The 940 came out in 2004 I believe
sorry but how can you make such a video and include the pm2 but not the og military?
The 940 is a least 20 years old.
Not kuh-bar .. k-bar
With all due respect, it's 'Ka-Bar' (pronounced K-Bar), not kabar.
Why are your pronunciations so off? If you're a knife guy then you would never say kabar instead of kay bar. It happens a lot on your channel.
Not doing your credibility any good by mispronouncing Ka-Bar
