Love the fact the first part of the list was Cold Steel. If your a tough knife fan then for the money IMHO Cold Steel can’t be beat. They are absolutely built to be beat on!
I carry my SR1 everytime I cut the grass just looking for stupid excuses to beat on it. "Oh look, a one inch or greater in diameter tree branch, I should probably hack that up before I throw it into that brush pile for some reason."
My brother gave me a gerber 06 auto when he was stationed at fort benning. That was my first high end knife and there was no looking back! The 06 will always hold a special place in my collection.
@@metal_complex also, if the ColdSteel Trailmaster isnt #1 we'll revolt ! 1/4" ? no way junior, that thing 0.32" on the spine !! it is very much a ColdSteel
Spyderco Manix 2XL has been my EDC the past 6 yrs. I absolutely love this knife , it's my favorite folder. I think this knife is highly underrated & doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Whenever I hear the term "hard use" for a folding pocket knife, that to me actually makes sense and is a practical hard use test, is the tire cut test. I can't remember who posted one of the first ones I seen, but he compared a Marauder H and a PM2 I believe, and cut the entire sidewall out of a tire with each knife. I think that was a good test/comparison for those two types of knives and where a "hard use" knife excelled in a "hard use" cutting situation. Even with the thicker blade it excelled in the cut, ergonomics, and the long term handling of the task on your hand. It seemed like a good simulation that can translate to other hard use cutting tasks to see if a knife will perform like you would want. No, it wasn't a run-flat lol.
Top Ten Knives To Use As A Literal Boat Anchor? Come on man, the Benchmade Adamas needs some love! If you haven't checked out the SOG Seal XR it would definitely be a good honorary mention. Great video.
I'm agree with you...i have bouth of them and I think they deserve 2 places in this list...like this will be the top 12 best hard use folding knives :D
Mayor Fuglycool's destruction test on the Cold Steel Voyager is probably the best testament to the ridiculous strength of the tri-ad lock. He basically uses the knife like a hammer & spinewhacks it hard dozens of times into bricks & cinderblocks with no failure. Yeah it's excessive strength beyond what most people would realistically need but still very impressive.
Thanks MC. I've had the CS American Lawman on my "must have" list since I started watching your channel and still do not have one... What is my problem! Added note: RAT 1 is also on that list.
My hard use is definitely a Strider SMF with S35VN. I’ve had it since 2008 and has been to Afghanistan three times with me. I trust that knife with my life, literally.
Of the list, I'd probably own the AD-10 and Shaman. They look like they have some of the best ergos for use. I always seem to prefer contoured handles over flat scales, especially if you have to apply a bit of force to the knife. While I'd usually go for a fixed blade (carry an Izula around the house), there's something to be said about a durable folding knife that still cuts really nicely.
Back in the EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) days for three years, I used 3 knives on the tool belt/suspension systems, 7 in Camilius (KABAR) combat, 5 in USAF survival, 3 in Buck 112, in addition to more specialized EOD tools . The Buck 112 did the most “fine”work. In looking back, too bad one handed opening/closing was not common. Today the Cold Steel 3.5 in American Lawman would be the folder choice. When proper pry bars/hammers were not present, the 5in USAF survival knife performed adequately.
I’m not a CS fan but can’t argue with the strength of their knives. Steel Will Gekko made by Viper in Italy has a special back lock that I’d bet is close to the Triad in strength. But, it’s a much more refined, smoother knife. I’ve owned 2 for 4-5 years. MT Socom Elite manual is a tough knife. I’d trust that over most frame locks
The best tool for the job is the one you have with you… and that’s normally a folding knife! Thanks MC for doing what you do! Great subject matter and even better attitude from you brother.
I love the mean look of the coldsteel folders,my only problem with them is the handles. They all seem to have that darn pinky swell to lock your hand in. I just can’t seem to get into them, with the exception of the American lawman. My pinky kind of hangs off the end and I’m super used to that so it’s fine. I just wish I could afford a Hinderer. One day...
The CS AD15 is my fav knife. Loosened the pivot screw a quarter turn and now it’s very easy and swift one-hand manipulation. Now I need the black one. Great list!
@@metal_complex lol I just thought it was funny. But that was good to hear because I've been eyeing the Protech SNG for a while, oddly enough I can't find it online but my local watchmaker has one in stock :/
Great list. Well thought out and rational arguments. I was glad to see the Hinderer included. People forget that he doesn’t make pocket jewelry. He makes strong, overbuilt, working knives.
If you want to witness some over the top abuse of the AD10 check out DBK's vid on it. They actually hammered it true a brick. And that's not even the worst they did... They live by fixed blades but couldn't get the AD10 to fail.
I've handled and reviewed the 4max. Its unquestionably durable for sure. My problem with it is that it's just a little bit over the top in the size department. Not much I could do with it that I couldn't do with the other smaller knives on this list.
I use my eklipse every single day at work as a cabinet maker with the Teflon washers. I just got my slicer no choil and am deciding if I want to make the slicer my work knife or just keep using the eklipse at work and keep slicer for home.
I've had many blades cross my desk this year but I still have never had a Shaman. Don't ask me why either.... lol. Great picks though for sure. The ad15 is probably my favorite.🍻🙏
Several months back, Pete from Cedric and Ada made a list of maybe 25 or so manufacturers and ranked them on 5 tiers of production quality, with number 5 being the highest rated. Only 2 manufacturers made the top grade - above Chris Reeve, Hinderer, and etc - Cold Steel was one of those 2 (Spyderco being the other one). Are they #1 on my list, no. I can have my Code4 in one hand and my Sebenza in the other and 10 times out of 10, the Sebenza is what I am reaching for. Now, having said that, when Pete talks, I am prone to listen, even when I disagree.
I think the triad lock has it's place in the knife world, but I also think it's not the best lock for regular folder use, because it does sacrifice usability and deployment and closing ease. Because if I have to keep getting my knife out and putting it away over and over, I want the action to be easy and hasstle free. If I was using a folder for very hard use I would want that triad lock, but when it comes to regular repeated use I could do without it.
Hi M-C I’m just wondering where can I get a xm18 3.5 besides dlt trading , because I’m after a dlc blade and they are all sold out I’m wondering how often does hinderer release knives weeks ,months ? Or is there a secondary market place for hinderer knives ? hello from Australia ,loving your xm18 rants
Can't be traipsing around work with a fixed blade when it comes time to cut a tire tread cap out of the brake drum of an 18wheeler. Just saying I need a folding knife for legality sake. It needs to be tough cause it's job is gonna be rough
What are some good hard use folding knives that retain a sharp blade well? I'm a lineman and have to cut ropes, twine, and straps often and my knives get dull fast.
Great video. Having a little fun with you now. How can any Hard Use list not include the Benchmade Adamas? You can debate the Spyderco or the Buck 110 but no Adamas? The Adamas is given on any list and the debate then is it the #1 hard use folder.
Everything on the Adamas screams capability except the omega springs. I didnt include it because I believe the integrity of every knife on my list will outlast those springs. Sorry 🤷♂️
Very disappointed in you nonsense stance on Benchmade. I guess the guys downrange and saving lives are using a weak knife. 20+years and I've only heard of spring problems on the internet. Yet Spyderco makes the list with its tip that is more delicate than my snowflake heart. SMH

Gerber 06 would be a nice consideration for this list.
I've always liked the 06 auto. It definitely is a hard use blade for sure. 🍻

In California it’s against the law to conceal a fixed blade so a hard use folding knife is more practical if your worried about breaking the law.
In my humble opinion Cold Steal SR1 would be my choice for best hard use folding knife., or tool.
If you want to witness some over the top abuse of the AD10 check out DBK's vid on it.
They actually hammered it true a brick. And that's not even the worst they did...
They live by fixed blades but couldn't get the AD10 to fail.
The S.O.G. Seal XR Flipper should be on this list !
Am a electrician and use my Griptillian ever day.
2 Words: Cold Steel
Cold steel is King, I have an SR1 and AD10, by far my favorite knives *I’ve* ever held, owned, used and seen.
They're great. Let's hope they stay great now that Lynn sold the entire Cold Steel company.
One that you should consider is the Cold Steel 4 Max scout a tank of a knife that begs for real hard use 🤔🤔🤔
I've handled and reviewed the 4max. Its unquestionably durable for sure. My problem with it is that it's just a little bit over the top in the size department. Not much I could do with it that I couldn't do with the other smaller knives on this list.

my favorites , Protech Strider SNG and cold steel recon 1 for hard use
Wait I'm the only one who uses my knifes for diving boards? Never mind found another lad who partakes in knife boarding.🍻
I still live in California. So fixed blades get you sideways looks.
I'm sorry, hopefully one day you move to America.
