It has always also amazed me how Chris can sing other singers music in his natural voice and makes it seem that the song is just as great when he does it, meanwhile not overshadowing what the original artist has done.

  • @hellaslayin7175

he changed his live technique to a less gritty and more clean later on in his career. If you listen to the same track live during meteora era he sings it as on the record. You actually never find more then double track on all lp records. For instance the power section in "in the end" is the most gritty and porwerful section of the song yet it's only single track while the chorus is doubled. His ability to sound really musical with a lot of pitch while singing really aggressive was definitely his trademark.

Back when this first came out, I was blown away by the chemistry of their voices. This has to be one of the definitive duets in Rock history. Kinda sad, that it only ever was a live bootleg.
That as a bonus track for an album or a live DVD with one performance from that tour would have been absolutely ridiculous.

Chris cornell has such a way of using little details to make his delivery of the 2nd verse his. The way the words just fall out of his mouth as if he’s barely opening his mouth, the way he leaves out the a- when he says “(a)gainst my will..” he delivers like only cornell would.

You spoke on Chester's "boyish" tone here and I just had a thought that it's interesting he sang in such an innocent tone but at the same time also portrayed such lyrics of negative self - conflict at the same time. it's an contradicting blend . it's the equivalent of someone pretending they're all good but than in-between the lines you see there is much more going on internally that they are struggling with.

Thank you Chris. I watched the live version video and then your reaction was recommended, so I just finished it. Your comments were 100% my thoughts from watching minutes earlier, so thank you for unconsciously agreeing with me. I'm serious though man, from Chris' classy & humble entrance right down to hugging his buddy! That doesn't mention our agreement on the technical differences in their voices. Sadly, I really think Chester had found the big brother he'd been needing his entire life when he found Chris, that's pure brotherly love man, and now it's just very, very sad. When Chris Cornell passed, my wife and 3 grown sons did NOT want to tell me man. I am a baritone, and my wife swears I sound like Chris Cornell, I'll humbly accept in the lower octaves. Haha. Also, everytime I play/sing Hunger Strike my wife and sons think its the radio. Without fail. Still unfortunately, I can't make it into the stratosphere. I had worked almost three years straight doing vocal exercises, with the sole purpose of being able to sing those high parts like Chris Cornell and now like Chris Liepe does. Nearly 3 years of expanding my range to sound more like Chris. A 3 year steady diet of Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Chris' Solo stuff, then my family had to break the news to me when he left us. I was CRUSHED man. I was also an STP/ Scott Weiland fan, he was my second favorite rock singer from my generation. So that sucked too. I sang 11 or 12 stp songs in the last band I was in. But after Chris' passing, I did not sing, I did not hum or even whistle for 2-1/2 years. So I'd lost any gains I'd made and then some. When I found your channel I started easing into it again, you really are inspiring man, so hang in there please. My voice is still not were it was 10 years ago, much less 4, but it is coming back. Your tribute to Chris "The Day I Tried to Live" blew my mind brother. Well I could go on for days, so I'll shut up now. Peace & Thank you Sincerely.

One thing that thins out Chester's voice during these live performances is that he's constantly cupping his mic. Chris doesn't do that (in this performance, I know he did it sometimes) and you can hear how much more dynamic/open he sounds. It makes the contrast between their voices so much bigger.
