- NASCAR has a long history at Rockingham, but that all halted for the Cup series in 2004. Today we are revisiting the last race in Rockingham's history, which had great racing, crazy crashes and a flip, and a wild finish.

I miss Rockingham, I wish NASCAR would race there again, just only once a year. I'll never forget that last race there in 2004, Carl Long flipping down the backstraightaway, and Kasey Kahne almost won that, but Matt Kenseth holds on to win it. That was outstanding.
Man I was at this race and sat on the backstretch right where Carl Long flipped. I miss Rockingham dearly.
Too bad Rockingham is in really bad shape today. I would like to see NASCAR come back to it.
We're seeing the opposite to North Wilkesboro thankfully, as it is being rebuilt.
It can't be in that bad of shape it just got repaved like 12 years ago and been less than 10 years since its last race.
@@captainnebulous2918 yea so happy to see wilkesboro being brought back and rockingham could too it's actually in decent shape still.
It's actually not in terrible shape and NC has given it money to help with renovations, along with Charlotte and North Wilkesboro.
@@RedWingsninetyone Actually the Biden administration gave NC the money to give the tracks. All of this money for all of these old tracks being renovated is coming from the infrastructure money. Although this detail is not being mentioned much due to the number of conservative voters in those regions and that they don't want inbred morons refusing to go to the races just because it came from Biden's bill.
It makes my day when you upload :)
I'm hoping to see NASCAR return to the Rock once the renovations are completed
Seems like i remember carl saying he remembers seeing someone in the stands eating chicken 🐔 while flipping
😂
Please bring NASCAR back to this track!
The beauty of Rockingham is it's natural abrasive nature - taken from the local sandy soil. Tire management is the key. As Fast as the first lap is fast - the second lap is slower !
WHAT!!! Robby Gordon also got on his side? i have never seen that one before!
good candidate for "forgotten Nascar crashes"
I wish nascar would bring back Rockingham
Yeah, I miss when that track was around.
RUclips is doing you dirty. How I have never been recommended or shown a video of yours, until NOW is crazy with the amount of these type of NASCAR videos I watch.
If I remember right, Carl Long had borrowed that car. The only thing he owned was the wheels.
bruh imagine borrowing a car and then barrel rolling in it, that would be one hell of a debt
I miss rockingham so much. It was such a fun racetrack.
I remember that Carl Long flip, what a wild ride.
Just 20 minutes down the road from me I grew up at that strip.
it's amazing that when NASCAR started all of the changes to entice new viewers, they started having viewers drip the sport. its almost like the fans came for the sport as it was.
I don't think that will make new fans coming to the track if the track comes back, you see you have to know where this track is from, like in 2022 we have Richmond and Martinsville, there in Virginia, Bristol is in Tennessee, next door to Virginia, also the national fairgrounds is in Tennessee, even north Wilksbourgh is also in north Carolina, same state where Rockingham is, and do you wanna know how far north Carolina is to Tennessee and Virginia? there next door to each other, my point is this, if your from the west rocky mountains on the other side of California, or near the central, your not going to bring fans all the time in the eastern states, so your gonna ask local people to come watch these races several time a year, in 2022 we have Richmond Martinsville and Bristol battling each other with the cup racing with fans watching 3 cup races a week, that's tiring to watch, and the unanimous of you people in the comments are asking to bring Rockingham back, it makes nascar 10 times worse, why can't anyone understand that? your asking fans, to drive 3 weeks on the road, near Tennessee and Virginia, this is horrible, if you just going to have short tracks in 3 states battling each other, this it good for the fan base.
Yay! ❤ Always love your uploads
Carl Long has the worst luck of anyone I've ever seen.
Nice video
Nice vid
Can you also do final races at Riverside, Chicagoland and Kentucky please?
My dad was at that race and I was excited to find out that that was the last cup race at the track.
😂 DW - "boing, boing, boing"
The dodge intrepids back then had better aerodynamics n was much faster than the dodge chargers back in the late 00's . i miss the dodges ....
Rockingham is my favorite track that isnt on the schedule
I wish Rockingham returned to NASCAR.
I was at that race right by the restart line
I love how people pound the table that they miss Rockingham and want it back but the attendance was horrible. 10k empty seats during NASCAR'S boom. Hell even when the trucks went, the attendance dropped a crazy amount from year 1 to year 2.
That flip was nothing compared to Bobby Allison’s flip down the back straightaway in his Cam2 Mercury in 1976. I was sitting back there when he flipped down the whole straightaway and then got hit by a car when he had stopped. I sure hope nascar comes back, I think they know they messed up by leaving. I still have the Texaco hood from Jamies car hanging up in my garage to this day.
Thanks for the story! Do you know if a clip exists?
@@extragoogleaccount6061 yes it does exist. On RUclips. If I find it again I will let you know. I'll look right now.
@@extragoogleaccount6061 the clip is called Bobby Allison flip at Rockingham 1976. Lol. Of all things.
Dang, I didn’t even realize how long it’s been.
you should do one for trucks
MARKingham. This track needs to get put back on the schedule in a bad way.
Ul the the recap of the 2002 Advance Auto Parts 250 please
One of several races Kahne deserved to win, but didn't. If only.
i was at this race
Why is it always a crash during ad breaks
2004 was probably NASCAR's wildest season overall for the Cup Series. You had a new title sponsor, Rockingham's last Cup date, Kasey Kahne finishing 2nd a bunch throughout the season, DEI dominating the superspeedways, Kurt Busch almost not winning the championship, did I miss anything?
Why get rid of such a fun track?
There's a number of reasons, like it said in the video the attendance was going down, also they would have had to take away a majority of the racing groove since Nascar was implementing the Safer Barrier
Few people remember it this way these days because they have a selective memory, but Rockingham was a very technical track and the useless casuals would always call it boring because it wasn't a bump-to-pass track like the other short tracks. So that's one thing fans need to keep in mind if it gets brought back to Cup. We need to make sure to silence the casuals if they start saying dumb shit again. Casuals literally only like bumping and banging, demo derbies, and 3 wide and that just has never been what good racing is about. Bumping is a symptom of good racing, not a cause of good racing. The good race is what made the bumping cool, the bumping is never what made the race cool.
The place didn't have safer barriers. That was an old fashioned race track, I was 3 when this race was ran and I still miss it
NASCAR's Last Cup Race.... until some point in the next 2 years. This is one of the 3 historic tracks likely to return to Cup by 2025 IMO. (others are Wilkesboro and Nashville Fairgrounds... I'd say Wilkes has the least chance might only get Trucks and Xfinity)
The racing was prolli ONLY good b.c of the gen 4 car & rules + tricks made it good. Today it would suck
ACTUAL RACING- actual passing and tire management. Comers and goers, not this slot car crap these days
