School lunches are in shambles. From a downgrade of quality to labour MPs calling themselves out... it's been a strange few days!

Why don't we highlight the ex ACT president Jago. He got name suppression from January 2023. If that had been me, my name would have been released the same day if not before. So much for all being equal under the law.
You’re all talking from a place of privilege, the entire point of this was to ensure those who can’t ford to send their kids to school with lunch weren’t disadvantaged, yes it means everyone gets a free meal but $130 million that used to go to the local economy is NOTHING compared to the tax breaks our government is giving tobacco companies. That is in the BILLIONS, it’s facts. The government is making poor choices and you’re focussing on the wrong issues.
Parents should be responsible for their kids... not me
New Zealand taxpayers should not be forced to pay for food because parents or guardians who are initially responsible for feeding their children choose not to. Easy way to solve that would be to make it donation based.
Feed these meals in Parliament, looks like shit.

@@ray-rm4zz it actually comes out of their basic expenses allowance - for ordinaryl MPs it's ~$19k per year which is to cover meals, passports, gifts, luggage, entertainment etc. This is on top of their ~$170k salary.
Consider this Duncan, This might be the only healthy nutritious meal these kids are getting. No matter whats going on at home kids deserve a healthy feed plain and simply.
And just because your mum was able to feed doesnt mean ever other child has a mum that can do the same
If this is the only healthy meal the kids are getting then their families/whanaus should be stripped of their children and prosecuted for neglect sir
The whole point of being a parent is to raise the child. Some people need to stop looking to the taxpayer to pick up their slack. You breed 'em, you feed 'em.
@@openmind5973 Whilst we can agree on that point that doesnt stop people breeding and unless you want to go full N*zi and bring in a breeding program where on licensed people can have kids then we need to steep up and make sure the kids here now are feed and taking care of.
But this doesnt count for people who are the working poor. That do exist. Or the familys where there is an abusive parent who wastes the money whilst one trys to hold it together. There is sooooo much that goes on that you dont think about.
So whats the harm in feeding kids a healthy nutritious meal? They have billions to give landlord, and 2/3rd of nz landlords arnt mum and pop, millions to Phillip Morris ciggis. they have wasted how much money messing with the ferries, Seymours pet Ministry cost 4x the amount of the one it replaced. But you dont want to feed the kids??????
No! David's mates who supply these lunches are definitely cutting corners and no doubt pocketing the bulk because what on earth was that slop? I've seen govt provided lunches before and this pet mince bs is far from those.

The govt should let Māori run the program...at least Māori can feed 10K mouths EASY!
A genuinely hungry person is not fussy.if it’s neutral and edible it dosnt matter what it looks like.80% of the workspace population would probably be more than grateful for a meal of that standard
Nothing wrong with a sandwich, fruit and a cookie. Sometimes a yogurt, small chipped or leftovers. Parents are responsible to feed their own children, it’s not hard nor expensive.
@yolandascholten2012 I agree ,why hot food. I only had 2 sandwiches in my lunchbox. Sometimes, an apple , but not often, an axanzac biscuit for playtime.
all these comments saying I didn't get free lunches that's because of the fckn prices back then, your parents could afford the basic bread, milk, cheese, ham, marmite shit gone changed for a lot of people struggling, the cost of living in this country is fckd up. the government will look into petrol, prices have gone up, food has gone up, rent has gone up, unemployment is at an all-time high, youth suicide has gone up, gang membership has gone up, the prison population has gone up, crime out the gate, people leaving this country highest ever this three Ronnie government is o for awesome welcome 2025
Why should the onus of cuts be on our tamariki, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the current programmes, and it was small kiwi businesses supplying the food which was a double benefit, read about Compass track record of food delivery and how they have been sued in the past , more profits going overseas (UK company), why aren’t the politicians getting their expenses cut, their food allowances and meals downgraded, travel costs, salaries, David Seymour had the gall to post his lunch online two days ago probably $30 for his one lunch serve. Other countries such as Italy and France invest in incredible meals for their school kids. This is all about punching down on our most vulnerable. Food costs a lot in New Zealand, we are getting ripped off so of course school lunches are expensive. Why is that the kids fault? Why do they deserve food you wouldn’t even give your animals. Stop embarrassing yourself with “ in my day” we also had better social housing, benefits, job pay relative to housing costs. You didn’t need free food because the systems were better. The cost of food was lower, everything was cheaper.
Enough of your ‘up-bringing’ diatribe, you only embarrass yourselves delving into how ‘hard’ you were when young and how soft the Tamariki are now, the truth of it is that we do live in different times and diet, tastes and consciousness have evolved, the moko want something better and premium Kai is how we teach them to be better men, easy-peasy
I had 2 sandwiches only ,thinly spread jam or fish paste that you could smell but never see. An apple was a treat and home cooking an anzac biscuit for playtime. In my school, kids who had nothing would steal others' food. You cried, stayed hungry and got on with it. My Dad has a massive veggie garden, and he wore out his shoes and stuck floor lynol as in inner sole again and again as it wore out. Those school lunches I would have died for. Times and expectations have grown

It was just normal. Normal to go to school with no shoes. I only got shoes when I had to wear a uniform. People today say that's tough . I didn't know it was, and I was happy . When someone says you are opressed ripped off and the world owes you a living, you could, if you have a weak mind ... believe it. Just do your best. Work hard and be kind to people and teach your children to do the same. People will always have an opinion and, in some cases, be mean. I don't think they are mean. Just their opinion. I grew up with no shoes running on the roads.now I have a home paid off with a solar power system battery. 40k . I'm saving for my retirement now and hope to have 500k . Not bad for a kid who had no shoes but listened to good people .

look after the down and out we can do this independantly of the goverment, what are they at the end of the day except lots of speeches, they broke, we will have to take alot of control for what is needed ourselves. My first focus is the amount of food waste lets feed our people

10,000 meals every day were wasted. 3800000 a year. That's over 30 million bucks a year - so yes prices needed to be reduced.
loved the 80s and 90s at school, was great days
I thought that they were gonna make it yuck so people would say they will just give their own kids their own lunch. so they can say .. this or nothing and when ppl go nothing.. he saved the whole lot.
Also the teacher brought pizza because they showed hour and a half late, what do expect the kids to stop their very important learning. your talking some mad shit man. Im going to call in monday and call you out on this
And of course it falls on the teachers right? It wasn’t the politicians running around using their own money to scramble together some food for hungry students, it always falls on the teachers who are already busy, It’s abhorrent.

I'm 57 and I remember days of no lunch this is not new bud, I was lucky well sort of, gratefull to be able to provide lunch for my son, the other kids loved what he got, wasen't expecting that
