  • Join us, Carol & Ken, on our first ever trip in our new Consort Nova Motorhome called Snoopy, as we continue to get used to driving and living in a larger van.
In this video, we visit Caerlaverock Castle and see how it was transformed into a stately home in the 1600’s. Then we head to Dumfries and get swept up in the commemoration of the murder of Red Comyn, 718 years ago to the day, and visit sites in the historic market town with connections to the poet, Robert Burns.

It’s channels like yours that makes me more than happy I don’t have a TV Licence anymore! Natural, relaxed, honest - and all delivered via some tremendous production values. No need for Michael Portillo or a crew of camera operators, sound engineers, researchers, editors, producers. Just Ken and Carol being themselves. It’s a magic formula! Thank you both.

Hello to you both again . Lovely to meet you yesterday at Laurieston. Regarding your question of what the 'old building used to be' as at 16.23 this is Rosefield Mills. The Rosefield Mills buildings are the last surviving large-scale Victorian industrial buildings in Dumfries, and are therefore of key cultural and historic importance to the town. The former mill buildings are listed, Category B and are located within the Dumfries Conservation Area. The buildings are derelict, and are included in the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland.
Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT) has acquired the most prominent and significant of the former mill buildings, having a colossal Venetian palazzo frontage to the River Nith, a prominent and attractive architectural landmark in the town, much-loved by the local community.
The river-front building was completed in 1886 as the first part of an extended building programme between 1886 and 1896. The buildings were designed by the Dumfries architect Alan Burgess Crombie (1845-1904), whose architectural practice is part of the cultural legacy of Dumfries through his design of villas, manses, schools and church work mostly still in use. The mills were designed and built for Charteries, Spence & Co. Ltd., manufacturers of Scottish tweeds and worsted fabrics, which were exported across the world.
Rosefield Mills is of great significance to the community even as a derelict building, and the possibility of its re-use for community benefit has received spontaneous and widespread support from the public, both locally in Dumfries, more widely across the region, and even from Norway, as the building housed troops from Norway during WW2.
The wider former mills site extends to around 10 acres, much of it derelict, yet within the town centre, just five minutes’ walk from the High Street. There is huge scope for both the preservation of the remaining architectural heritage as well as for an outstanding piece of new urban design fulfilling a multitude of purposes. The aspiration is for the restoration of our building to act as a catalyst for the renewal and urban regeneration of the wider 10-acre site. Hope this answers the question.

Having lived in Dumfries my whole life, I enjoyed your tour of it and the slightly exotic pronunciations 😊 the derelict building you asked about is an old woollen / textile mill, ships would come up the Nith and unload over the water at dock park and it would have been quite the busy place back in the day, sadly now only one fire away from demolition, however, there is an effort underway to renovate and preserve it. The suspension bridge has always been known as such, perhaps being a technological marvel in its day and requiring no further extrapolation. The street beside it is called Suspension Brae which I always thought was nice. The high street is struggling at the moment and it was nice of you to show its finer side. Hopefully with local initiatives and investment from nice tourists like yourselves we will be able to build it up again.

Another great video Ken and Carol. We had family living in Scotland until recently, they have after 16 years now returned to Australia. It provided the reason for many trips to see them. We to, visited Dumfries - a nice market town but must have been very hard living when Robert the Bruce was around, not the nice convient power we now have at our finger tips. We traveled extensively through the UK every year during that period. You bought back many memories. Hoping I’m not offensive but wondering what camera do you use? The picture quality is excellent with your very steady hand.

I apologise but naming a track I have used is not easy. I have a library of thousands of tracks which I have sub divided into groups of emotions.
When I need a piece of music I decide the emotion I am trying to create and skip through the tracks until I find something that fits.
We used to log them all but gave up as it was too much work to manage.
To find the name I have to guess the emotion category, skip through each track until I find it. It takes too much time so I don’t do it anymore.
Often you can identify the track using Siri, Alexa etc. Sometimes that will not work.
I licence all of my music from Artlist.

Thank you for the informative video - for me I’d prefer if you linger on some on the interesting sights you stumble on - example past visitors carving their names in the castle walls. But none the less very enjoyable.

That was a great vlog with plenty of history and beautiful sites. The castle and the grave yard with those elaborate grave stones were a little bit creepy.

As always, an informative and entertaining venture. Loved the Castle, structures and buildings of South West Scotland in the very prominent red sandstone, goes right back to Carlisle, and is very warm and attractive. Loved your Burns interlude as well. Presbyterianism is past centuries and old graveyards have marvellously carved and narrated headstone, and where you can get to see the rear of the stone, they usually had skull & crossbones carved to maintain your own (viewers) and the incumbents' mortality. Take care & stay safe. Kia Ora from New Zealand. 💜💜 PS: One of the best preserved pot prisons is in inside Dunvegan Castle on Skye, also used as entertainment of diner guests, who then could end up in the pot, which I recall was also tidal.

I always get a lovely cosy feeling after watching Lifeistooshort on a Sunday morning over a mug of coffee. I visited Dumfries recently and sadly I was shocked by the poor condition of the town centre. Such a lovely place deserves a good clean up. The old building is Rosefield Mills. Thanks for all the interesting facts during your journeys.

YOur LITTLE RED had some great features, yet what I sense you're enjoying to the full, with your new camper van, is the ability to kick back and relax on those blustery days with the numerous windows, to view your surroundings with a good cup of hot tea

In elementary school, we had to memorize a poem and recite it in front of the class. I did Robbie Burn's, I Think Mice are Rather Nice. Or more simply, "I like Mice."
I still think they're cute, but don't like them getting into my kitchen drawers. My cats love to play with them. Catch, gently carry, then release to play again.
That graveyard did look spooky. Not a place to walk through in the dark.
    Cheers,
    Jon in rural BC, Canada
