I think shutting them down was a good thing. Abuses were commonplace.
      However...
Are things better or worse today? (For the severely mentally ill)
I think we need to reconstitute them with some safeguards in place.

Crime is increasing everywhere. Everything costs more, people are struggling, and fewer consequences for these types of offenses in many parts of the country. I think a lot of addiction issues, most crimes are crimes of opportunity, and once criminals learn they can get away with certain crimes word spreads and they double down and commit more of the same crime.

Yeah you go ahead and run the hills run to the farmlands and see how long you stay afloat before they start moving out to the hills and the rural areas and the farmlands don’t you get it yet?
That’s exactly what they want us all to do is run to the hills run to the rural areas run to the farmland’s so they can run with us and build more mega cities around them and then they can force out all of the farmlands and all the farm animals and all the crops so we’re dependent upon them and their GMO food running only puts a bandage on the wound you’re still bleeding and you want to put a bandage on it like that’s going to be the answer.
There’s not gonna be any place to run eventually if more and more people ran to the hills ran to the farms ran to the rural areas those areas will get smaller and smaller and smaller because it will eventually get overpopulated.

I moved from Detroit in 1980, and was appalled at it's downfall. But the Motor City is coming back. Slowly but surely.
I love living in Lansing, Michigan's Capitol. My neighborhood feels safe, but criminals tend to travel to nice areas, so I'm always aware of my surroundings. I'm almost 66 years old, too old to be street fighting to defend myself out there.
I've been homeless, then worked for years at a shelter with homeless families that came here from around the world. These were good people who financially fell through the cracks, and were grateful for the assistance. I felt humbled to help them get clean, affordable housing, as someone had helped me.
I do enjoy your thoughtful conversations concerning things we Americans REALLY care about... without useless rhetoric. I wish for us all... peace, joy, good health, love and prosperity.

I live in Charlotte, and as school gets out for the summer theft and car break ins increase. Do not leave anything, including car registration in your car. Increase outdoor lighting. Lock your doors. I live in a decent neighborhood, but that can make you a target. Crime near us goes down once school is back in session. Teens are perpetuating a lot of it.

We have kids stealing cars in broad daylight in my neighborhood . Our next door neighbor had his back window bashed in and when they caught the people ( there were 4 of them), the youngest was 9 years old and the oldest was 16.
The police said people are going straight into people's houses, if their doors are unlocked and pointing a gun at them and shooting, if they don't get what they want. It's gotten a lot worse around here (Seattle/Tacoma). We have a pitbull mix, that alerts us, if anybody comes anywhere near our property. We have a six foot cedar fence around the entire property. It's scary. We live in a diverse neighborhood, where everybody's watching out for everybody.
I don't blame you for not wanting Lex to take your baby on a stroller ride by herself. On the one hand, we can't live in fear, the other hand, we have to do our due diligence to watch out for each other. Love your podcasts❤

Overwhelmed and inadequate family services, mental health help, addictions help, basic foundational education, and rampant proliferation of poverty level employment. The sad part of homelessness is that it happens fast and might not be your fault.
Look home many people in Maui just lost homes. They hadn't planned for that. Some won't be able to afford to start all over. They can't buy a house, even if there's one available. They might not have enough to secure a rental or a motel room.
    And that's how it happens.
They didn't do anything wrong. They lost their homes.

The area I am from is just as expensive as where I currently reside. I am not from the Atlanta area and my cousin just purchased a house in our home area because it’s much cheaper than renting. And the crime issue is just insane. I as a single l woman feel ssafer living with roommates than living alone. Inflation in housing pricing is a LONG term issue. I lived in NYC and my first one BR apartment in a nice neighborhood in Manhattan was $210/month and my salary was $12K/year back in 1977. Now that apartment would be $3-4K/month but it's unlikely a person's first job after undergraduate school would be $180K (the same proportion).

Detroit definitely still has some really bad areas. But parts of Detroit are totally cool, safe and rejuvenated. This is relatively recent - they're not areas that have always been that way. People are starting to put some effort in. It's never going to be back to what it was, but it's definitely better. Ann Arbor has seen a rise in auto theft (there are probably newer and nicer cars here) and judging from my own Next Door neighborhood, a ginormous rise in catalytic converter theft.

I'm in Detroit. We have our problems, mostly due to city authorities that still think it's the 1990s, especially with regard to development, but everywhere you go there are little signs of rejuvenation. The sense of community and the community activists are intense and dedicated to improving their neighborhoods.

When I was younger and lived in NJ I used 'The Club' to protect my car. It's a big steel bar that fits across your steering wheel and locks it from being able to move much. You can't drive with it on. It comes on and off with a key and they still make it. 'THE CLUB'. Looks like you can get on for about $60. Relatively cheap deterrent. Good Luck my Peeps.

Saw this going on a few years ago in Denver, it spread to the other communities and then most of the state. I grew up in Colorado and five years ago I left for good. I will not move back not even to any of the once-great mountain communities. I now live in Wyoming but this cancer of crime is even invading here with drugs and shootings occurring nearly daily in towns with less than 60,000 populations so yes it is everywhere.

I live in east TN in a relatively safe area. I’m just outside Gatlinburg. Car theft and break ins are a bit worse in the tourist areas like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge but the surrounding areas are ok. We’re an hour away from Knoxville. It’s a beautiful area too. If you decide to leave Florida you should check out east TN. It’s a heavy Republican area with lots of hunters (which I’ve never liked) but mostly people mind their business. I love the mountains so I’m very grateful for the scenery here. Just wanted to pass all that along. Love you guys!!

I don't know if it's really an increase or just me paying more attention to local news, but there are car thefts every week and they are almost always recovered shortly in the poorer city that's nearby. It seems to be young people for the most part.

I live in a park a bit out in the country... about 2 miles outside the city limits. Two minutes takes you to a freeway entrance, and it's 15 minutes to city center. No crime, no street people, no garbage, no graffiti. Cheaper out here too, my space is $600. Might be time to get out of the city.

Love this discussion. Would like more content like this (obviously not to hear that your neighbourhood is decending into hell!). Keep aware of your surroundings, but please try not to live in fear. It looks like the email is saying that steps are being made to keep the area safe, take comfort in that.
I was told once that I could judge people but not condemn. That's the balance I try to have to help me find understanding.

10 yrs of working night shifts at a remote industrial park in NY. Most perpetrators want a fast in and gone show. We'd disable our rides by removing the rotor from under the distributor. Put back in the am to leave. I'm sure something similar could be done with a newer engine set up.

Depending on the year. Almost all of them made in the last decade or so have individual coil packs controlled by the master computer, no distributor to disable. Your best bet now is get one with a manual transmission, kids these days have no idea how to handle one of those.

I was in a suburb of Wichita, Ks since they had a strike at the air plants a lot of people are still trying to recover. While I was there I stopped by Walmart they had 2 patrol cars out front, roving officers inside the store, and roving patrol cars outside. They keep saying they are going to tax the rich, if you tax the businesses the prices have to go up because of the taxes and they have to bump the employees salary to keep them. You are looking at what I grew up in, the late 70’s - early 80’s

I’m on Okla City . We still have a middle class. The federal govt is putting the squeeze and weeding out middle class. This is what happens when that occurs. You have a wider gap and only poor and rich and no middle class. This is what they are doing and that’s why they are flooding the borders

Greetings from SF bay CA. Sadly the homelessness problem is being shipped from cities to small towns where we currently live case in point someone towed a truck one day in our street along with a cutest dog and his owner who had diabetes...someone one paid to have this man towed...I called to let the sheriff know he wasn't bothering anyone but the heat wave was too much for them and a raised a stink that that was not a good place for him....And during the pandemic a paranoid schizophrenic camped in front of our home....dude clearly yelled at someone and cussed at random times after way to many calls to police who did nothing initially....he finally had to move due to the building being sold. He was clearly trespassing but police let it fly? I dunno man....didn't let me kids venture out during this particular time....

First off, shelters do require the people leave during the work hours. Also, I am from a city of about 16,000 people of all ethnicity.(North Carolina) In the past 2 years, crime has skyrocketed. Just in the past couple weeks there has been 2 shootings, car thefts, several breaking and entering and store thefts. Crime has gone up in all areas. It is all prophesied and will only get worse so hang on tight.

I had my car stolen out of my driveway once. Very confusing to walk out to go to work, and your car isn't where you left it.
    I was extremely upset.
Tweakers stole it. Stuffed it in a garage, sold the nice wheels and tires for dope, left the car sitting flat on the garage floor with no jack or blocks (not sure how they planned to ever move it again). When the dope ran out, they started fighting amongst themselves, and one turned the others in.
I had access to another set of wheels and tires. I got my car back, though not totally intact. At least driveable.
