I have just inherited an Olympus OM1 and thoroughly enjoyed your review, I never realised it was such a good camera. The first thing I want to do is to get it professionally cleaned, after that I want to use it until it falls apart.
Hahahaha. Yes, it's very good. And if you can afford it, that's a right move to get a professional CLA. It's going to run like a champ and hopefully give you epic photos for decades to come.
Hi OC. I bought an M1 in 1973 when I was 20. Now have 24 OM film cameras and zuiko lenses. Its the handling that gets you hooked. Thanks for the vids. Regards
WOW 24!! that's crazy :) You're so right about the handling. So do you use those lenses with a digital camera or for video? I know that's quite popular.
Yep, the Olympus OM1n and the Nikon F3 HP, are amongst my two favourite SLRs ever, and being a film camera collector I have them both. Great review and some really nice photos. Brilliant.
Back in the mid 70's I had a black OM-1 for about two years then sold it and bought the even better OM-2, also in black. I had the autowinder on my OM-2 as I could not afford the motor drive. The adverts for OM's featured most of the top photographers of the time. Great video, brought back some memories.
The Olympus OM-1 is a masterpiece. All the controls you need are right where you need them and there on the lens. Once you’ve set the ISO for the film you’re using, you can shoot unfettered with your eye in the viewfinder, monitoring composition, focus and exposure, your right hand taking and winding the film on, and the left hand focussing, moving aperture and shutter speed. For a newcomer to photography, it’s superb. It’s shows you the ropes so you can understand speed, shutter and aperture interaction immediately. My late Father had one which I have taken on myself and it’s the only manual camera that I’ll use. I don’t want to use anything else! Great review.
I got an M-1 twelve hours ago, with 5 lenses, 3 x tele-converter, extension tube, filters, National flash, Olympus case/shoulder bag 'L' bracket with side grip & flash cold shoe, cable release, and two camera cases for small/large lenses. Amazing gear, I've never owned Olympus before.
Owned this camera since 1979, when I bought it used for $125. Never had a problem, and only retired it because of digital photography. I now own both the Em1 and the Em1 ii. Good to see that Oly never flagged. Always ahead of the game.
That was my first SLR about 1979. I loved that camera and the bright viewfinder was great. The I switched to Nikon 6 years later I really missed that bright finder. Now,I miss that camera, and Zuiko lenes are very popular with mirrorless shooters. The OM-1 is a classic, thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for sharing. Very passionate review and choosing B&W really send us back in time. The audio is also very well taken - your voice is also very relaxing making me want to listen to other videos on your channel.
I got one including lenses at a estate sale for $10. With the express acknowledgement that I take care of it and use it love it and don't keep it in storage. Mine is the om-1. And I have used it and the looks I've received are priceless in the day of digital and smartphones. And have received many compliments from said people while surrounded by them all wanting to hold it and look thru the lens. Many older people have nodded smiled and said this was one of their family cameras to shoot important events. What a wonderful camera. I'll keep it alive as long as I can per my instructions.
Such a fine review! Your presentation is excellent! I've used the OM-1 series, but never owned one. I've got Canon and Nikons in my "collection", but no Olympus. Guess I'll have to start shopping again!
Great video! I love your presentation style and the lack of using Ummms and ahhhs whilst gathering your thoughts. Clearly you thought this video through.
I really enjoyed this. It was my first decent camera 1972. Previously, I had used a Petri with their 45mm f1.9 lens from 1955-1972. I think I had an Olympus for about 20 years, before I traded in all my gear for a Nikon N90s (and then Nikon digitals). When I upgraded to the OM-2n, I gave my OM-1 to my son. It was his first 35. But, guess what? I am selling all my extensive Nikon gear to go back to Olympus and get the E-M1 Mark III with a 100-400 and a 12-40, plus a couple of accessories.
6:13 It's charming the way you actually showed the viewfinder. Olympus OM1 and OM2 viewfinder images were huge (97% versus about 85% on many SLR) and zi actually felt that I was looking over the top of the camera not through it. The high eyepiece mand small camera meant that the viewfinder image emerged in with what you could see over the top of the camera and your left eye would see right past the camera as well owing to the compact size. It was a triumph of design. The smallest pentaprism ever and the largest image! Then that lovely quiet shutter and mirror.
Excellent review, thumbs up. If I might add, you forgot to stress its strongest point, and that is the fact that it's one of the few cameras where you can compose, select aperture, shutter speed, and focusing without ever taking your eyes off the visor. p.s. The OM was originally called M for Maitani, and after Leica complained they decided to add the O for Olympus, hence OM (Olympus-Maitani) :) p.p.s. Re: battery. The camera voltage can be very easily changed from 1,35v to 1,5v, which will allow you to use nowadays batteries.
Thanks Matteo. Yes they claimed that, but the timing was all so convenient :) And yes that's a strong point. A few of the Olympus cameras were like that too, like the RC.
Most probably one of the top 3 35mm cameras of all time. Grew up using one, which I inherited from my father. Could never beat the pictures I took with the OM-1.
OM-2N is very good, I love my OM-1 but the OM-2N uses normal batteries and it has aperture priority that's very accurate. It still has an override though for a regular needle meter like the OM-1.
I just picked up an all black OM-1 with 50mm f1.8 lens in working order at a thrift store for $10 USD. What a beautiful camera, and it's built like a tank. For an SLR, the size is pretty small. I really like the fact that you can swap out the focus screen. Mine had a beat up 1-1 micro prism screen which I swapped out for a mint 1-13 split screen. I will never part with it.
+Old Cameras: the video is entertaining, informative, comprehensive, well paced, and just the right length. Your passion for this model is obvious and infectious. Thanks for taking the time to share the wonders of the OM-1.
If you buy a OM1, OM1n or OM1-md: you have to remove the top plate and clean out all of the old foam around the prism and hotshoe bracket. It's an easy endeavor but is a necessity. Otherwise great cameras, once you start with the OM system you'll soon collect them all.
The foam used as cushioning on top of the prism degrades and east away the coating on the glass reflex prism. The foam turns into a gooey mess, it can also migrate down into the mechanism and cause mechanical issues. It is not a hard fix even for someone who has no experience working with cameras, you do have to be careful tho. We if you have an Om1 om1n or om1-md that has been to a shop in the past 20 years it probably has been done already.
I agree, this camera was the modern marvel of the time. My step-father was drawn to purchase this back in 1972 due to the reasons you've mentioned. It has captured thousands of scenes, and has made it into my hands. It's a svelte beast!
Old video, but I came across this video haha. I recently bought the OM-1n as my first film/SLR camera. I started film photography 6 months ago and I borrowed a friends SLR (Nikon f3) but I saw the OM-1n at a second hand store and fell in love with it. I already shot few rolls and the results of the scans are amazing. I really love this camera and its simplicity and compact size❤📸🎞️ I use it when a Zuiko 50mm 1.8 lens.
I used an OM-1 in high school 1974/5 and bought an OM-2 in 1978 which I still use today (5 images yesterday 19th 03 2020). It is still slick in all of its functions though I must change the light seals soon. I don't know how many rolls I have put through this body over the years but it will run into the thousands. My digital is the OM-D E-M5
OMD EM5s are remarkably like the OM1 and 2 in looks, right down to the more pointed pentaprism. My EM10II s are more like the OM10 as you might expect. I had an OM10 when I was 15. Cheap as chips and the shutter sound was smooth as silk, just like the 1 and 2, making so many SLRs sound noisy and clunky. If I could afford it I would stretch to an EM5 I hope they don't take away the Olympus trade mark, would be a huge mistake.
Thats a legit thumbnail bro. and your last name is even more hardcore, at first I thought it was a kind of download lol. theres another great channel I like to watch that also bathes itself in black and white, "Ted Viera" a los Vegas photographer who shoots Fuji and Leica. very cool dude like yourself.
Great OM1 video. I have had an OM2n since I bought it new in 1980. It is also a wonderful camera. I like it so much I bought a second one a little over a year ago with a motor drive and a couple of lenses I did not have. I like the easy grip you get with the motor drive. But for portability you cannot beat the standard OM in a simple leather case. Thanks.
+Robert Nuttmann Absolutely. I don't like motor drive (or battery grips on digital) so much. I feel it messes up the cool rectangular form factor of a camera and turns it into some kind of square :)
A true gem. ( The camera is nice too. :-) ) Happy to subscribe. I'm four years late to this video so I'm off to see what you've been up to lately. Thank you!
I too own an MD from new and I want to praise the reviewer for pointing out ALL of the camera's features. additional items e.g 40 lenses,motor-drive .right angle viewfinder withe adjustable magnification. OLYMPUS make/made microscopes which may explain the 'scientific' accessories.
I got my OM-1 new 40 years ago. I just pulled it out of storage- I do not think I have used it since 2001. Some Ilford HP5 is on order. I have the 50mm 1.8, along with a 75-150 and a 85-250. We shall see if it all still works!
I agree. I owned the Nikon F3 which was very costly at the time and owned a Olympus OM1n & OM1 with motor drive. I am still using Olympus Zuiko 28mm F/2.8, 135mm F/3.5 & 50mm F/1.4 on my Panasonic GH2 with incredible results.
Wein zinc/air battery is a direct replacement for the unavailable Mercury battery and needs no exposure compensation. Side effect is it lasts about 4-6wks from the second you pull the tab off, no matter how little you use the camera.
Nice informative video! I have the Olympus OM2SP (Spot Program) film SLR! Marvelous camera! Just got into film photography a year ago. I now have 5-film SLRs!
My first SLR. Build quality not quite up to Nikon, the timer lever was known to fall off and my film advance failed and had to be repaired but IQ was certainly excellent and it was a lot less tiring lugging around. Nice review.
I had one and practiced a lot with it. I wouldn´t change an "imaginary digital" OM-1 for any other modern digital with lots of features: the OM-1 was extremely compact, simple and fun to use. The available cameras nowadays are somewhat confused to deal with.
I picked mine up at a thrift store for $10 with the 50mm lens and a 70 to 300mm lens. Rather clean little camera and seems to work perfectly. When I seen what was in the bag, I couldn't get my money out fast enough. Great video! Thanks.
I recently took one of these in, and have been using the lens on my Canon EOS T4i while I wait to get film, and those lenses really are just amazing. Better bokeh and just as sharp (if not sharper) of an image than the kit lens that came with the Canon, plus a way wider aperture
Fantastic review style. My granded owned this camera in the 70's, and I plan on getting it as my first film camera. I already shoot manual with my DLSR, so I am really looking forward to this!
I plan on getting B&W film for it, but I have been recommended so many different ISO's. Can I ask which you would recommend for street photography/landscape shots? I was thinking ISO100 but someone told me 400. I live in London (England), and the weather is rather overcast and rainy at times, but we do get the odd bright cold day. Thanks in advance, I keep watching this review! :)
Hi, it's a nice choice indeed. I think 100 is not ideal for London most of the time, especially in winter. 400 is a nice compromise. Also for street photography, you probably want a relatively fast shutter speed, so the higher the ISO the better (so you can still use a reasonable aperture to ensure you're in focus). I'd go for 400 too.
Your making it possible for me to enjoy a tech vid like I would enjoy a short film. Beautiful images, good music and very very well done. Thank you :-)
I'm a bit late with my comment my but here goes... I owned an OM1md but regrettably sold it many years ago. However I now own an ON2n and an OM4ti as well as a selection of Zuiko lenses and absolutely love them, they are so portable and I can trust the metering with them. I actually prefer them over my Nikon FM3a.... Love you're channel, Regards, Alan
Hi Alan, Never late :) Those zuiko lenses are amongst the best there are. Apart from the Helios-44-2, the other lens I use very frequently is my Zuiko 50mm f1.8. Very sharp and pleasing bokeh.
For me my 50mm 1.4 stays on the camera most of the time, i carry ( If i need them) 24mm 2.8, 21mm 3.5 and a 135mm 2.8 all but the 135mm have the same filter size. All beautifully crafted lenses, i feel blessed and privileged to own them....Long live film photography (Although like most people i use digital as well) :-)
Thank you so much for making this video. I just bought this camera yesterday in an amazing shop here in Chicago. I am not a proffesional photographer and was very confused by having the speed in the ring and not as a nob on top of the camera as my Canon one. Thanks again, really useful video.
that video made me wanna go with olympus film camera :) still, not sure about OM-1, maybe OM-2 will be better for beginner as it provides auto options. great video! subbed

I own both OM-1 & OM-2 spotprogram. Yes, the OM-2 is better for beginners, but with increased confidence, you will want an OM-1.
Yes mine started jamming half way through a film , the idler gear had not sprung back a small screwdriver and moving the cam on the grey wheel so it aligned with the cam on the left saved the film🦉
As a collector owning over 100 cameras including a whole Leica collection of almost all Barnacks + the M3 and M4, Rolleiflexes and Hasselblads, the OM-1 is the only SLR I really like, it's small, beautiful, high quality, fully mechanical, reliable, and has in my opinion the best lens system, I use them on my digital S5 exclusively. Hands down the best SLR of all time!
Nice review of a great camera. I have the OM-2n, its close cousin. I used to shoot with it frequently until the shutter became off/sticky. I am tempted to open it up and see if I can fix it. The cost to repair was more than getting another one on eBay unfortunately. Cheers.
+Shawn Brezny Yes I know what you mean. I only pay to repair if the camera has sentimental value like, say, if it was given to me by my dad or uncle or something like that. Sometimes its best to just get another one.
Just found one at a thrift shop for just a few dollars. Looks like it's still in fine working condition, so I think I'll pick up some film this afternoon!
Just found one at goodwill. Forty bucks. 28-105 lens. It's in great condition. Previous owners address is on the bottom of the camera. They took good care of it.
I'm almost done with the first roll through the camera. I'm hooping to get a 50mm 1.4 lens for it if the photos come out. Awesome video by the way. I learned a lot from it.
Lovely overview, thank you. This was my first SLR camera. I wish that modern DSLR's provided focus aids like the OM-1 did (split screen, as I recall, with a prism option). Anyway, if you ever get the chance, try the 50mm f/1.4 which is even sharper with better rendering than the f/1.8!
I have one I may sell soon. It has an advance issue on occasion that creates a double exposure.. So many years of BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, Hope to see it go to someone who understands it's ability! I shoot video now more on my Sony Z5U GREAT VIDEO & COOL SHOTS!!!!!!
The M 1 is not quite as rare as you indicated, About 52000 were produced in the first year and most were sold in Japan and surrounding countries. I recently acquired one on E Bay for just under $ 200 including a 50 mm f 1.4 system M Zuiko lens.
Great video! I am interested in getting an OM-1 or an M-1. Although the battery is an issue for me. I think in place of the battery availability, an exposure meter will help. Thank you for this information.
I have an OM-2n with Zuiko 50 1.8 lens which I bought from a guy on facebook for about $250 and I can say mine is in really good condition, it looks like new

@@OldCameras I bought my OM2SP from a small camera repair shop, all refurbished and like new. It cost a bit more but well worth it, IMO.
This camera made me fall in love with photography. I bought first OM1 at the age of 15.
It's such a nice camera. Do you still shoot with one?
Nicola Neale I’m waiting on mine to be sent to me. I’ve heard nothing but good things

You'd think this day and age we could come up with something to properly replace the slow-drain capabilities of those old mercury batteries.
+Old Cameras the Wein cell does, there is no gradual drop off. But the 'life expectancy' is very short.
Ah, I see. That could get expensive over time. Thankfully, one could just use an external meter with this camera. Less convenient but much cheaper :)
You're right. Nikon F3 is built to survive a nuclear explosion :)
I had one and practiced a lot with it. I wouldn´t change an "imaginary digital" OM-1 for any other modern digital with lots of features: the OM-1 was extremely compact, simple and fun to use. The available cameras nowadays are somewhat confused to deal with.
Part of it's beauty is it's simplicity. I love the OM-1 more than all the other OMs because of that. As long as it doesn't jam up :)
A common fault with Om10s
I picked mine up at a thrift store for $10 with the 50mm lens and a 70 to 300mm lens. Rather clean little camera and seems to work perfectly. When I seen what was in the bag, I couldn't get my money out fast enough.
Great video! Thanks.
Stellar video. I feel the GAS bubbling inside me like crazy now.
LOL. Don't do it!!!! there's no end to the bottomless pit of GAS
Hey man. This just showed up on my YT feed :) I’m a subscriber of you channel but this was a nice little go back in time to Ade’s b&w videos.
LOL. I do remember your comments from the old times haha.
There is no question - BEST ever
I recently took one of these in, and have been using the lens on my Canon EOS T4i while I wait to get film, and those lenses really are just amazing. Better bokeh and just as sharp (if not sharper) of an image than the kit lens that came with the Canon, plus a way wider aperture
Those lenses were so well made ☀️
Fantastic review style.
Thank you :-)
Its my pleasure and I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
:-)
great, I remember this camera very well, so light , light years ahead of its time. Very popular with climbers.
Ah, I can imagine. I also took it up a mountain once :) [I'm no climber though, I took a cable car]
It still kicks butt today.
Love you're channel,
Regards,
Alan
Hi Alan,
Never late :) Those zuiko lenses are amongst the best there are.
All beautifully crafted lenses, i feel blessed and privileged to own them....Long live film photography (Although like most people i use digital as well) :-)
Nicely shot. And a fine camera.
Thanks.
Great camera. Great video. Great voice. Nicely shot. Thanks.
My sister just gave me an early birthday present. An OM1 with multiple lens. Loving this camera!!!
That's great! enjoy it :)
Great channel! I wonder how I did not come across your videos until now.
Thanks for stopping by :)
Very Very Very good review/postview… Keep up the good work Bro.
"postview". nice :) thanks. haha.
I have an OM 1 with a no 50mm 1.8 lens that I bought new in 1978 & it is still talking great photos.
I hope it gives you many good years to come. 👍
Thank you so much for making this video. I just bought this camera yesterday in an amazing shop here in Chicago. I am not a proffesional photographer and was very confused by having the speed in the ring and not as a nob on top of the camera as my Canon one. Thanks again, really useful video.
I'm so pleased to hear that. Thank you. Enjoy the camera.
that video made me wanna go with olympus film camera :) still, not sure about OM-1, maybe OM-2 will be better for beginner as it provides auto options.
great video!
Brilliant video. I have a OM1 bought at auction coming next week. Fingers crossed it works.
It’s a great camera and a pleasure to use
very clear and well done, music ok and black and white very appreciated thank you for your video.
lovely camera, though I haven't owned one, friends have. Nice picture examples too. Thanks. I still love the looks of the Photomic FTN.
+jumbosilverette Thanks for watching. yes some people really like the FTN :)
I just got one of these. ^^ Looking forward to taking it out this weekend!
Congrats :) Enjoy it.
So informative. loved it
What a beauty of a camera! Cool vid.
Just found one at a thrift shop for just a few dollars. Looks like it's still in fine working condition, so I think I'll pick up some film this afternoon!
Hope all was well with the camera and that it actually works. Have fun.
Great video. It is one of the cameras I love most because of the concept and the ergonomics
The shutterspeed ring around the bayonet
was first introduced in 1965 on the Nikormat
which had a X-synch of 1/125 sec and a vertical shutter..
Just found one at goodwill. Forty bucks. 28-105 lens. It's in great condition. Previous owners address is on the bottom of the camera. They took good care of it.
Nice. If it's in great condition, that's a good deal. The very good condition ones go up to 200 bucks with a great prime lens.
I'm almost done with the first roll through the camera. I'm hooping to get a 50mm 1.4 lens for it if the photos come out. Awesome video by the way. I learned a lot from it.
doing it in black and white is cool
Great review! I love my OM-1.
Had to check out your channel, I say, you've got a fine channel sir! Subbed and looking forward for more!
+Jason Barlis Thank you so much. Looks like I'm our first subscriber :)
There are OM4's , flea bay for around 200 and they got an awsome metering system.
Another excellent video, Ade.
your voice is soooo soothing!
hahaha. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the informative video. I love your video style, it's creative!
That's so encouraging, thank you :)
This is a fantastic and informative video, I really enjoyed watching this video.
Thank you for watching :). I remember really enjoying making it haha.
Nice history behind the product. Thank you.
I love this video! Thanks so much for making it!
+Adam Keck Thanks for watching. Much appreciated :)
I have one I may sell soon. It has an advance issue on occasion that creates a double exposure..
So many years of BEAUTIFUL PICTURES, Hope to see it go to someone who understands it's ability! I shoot video now more on my Sony Z5U
GREAT VIDEO & COOL SHOTS!!!!!!
The OM-1 was my first SLR camera back in the late 70s, it is the coolest and easiest camera to use!!!
100% I love it
The M 1 is not quite as rare as you indicated, About 52000 were produced in the first year and most were sold in Japan and surrounding countries. I recently acquired one on E Bay for just under $ 200 including a 50 mm f 1.4 system M Zuiko lens.
The 1:1 viewfinder on 50mm is wonderful.
Great video! I am interested in getting an OM-1 or an M-1. Although the battery is an issue for me. I think in place of the battery availability, an exposure meter will help. Thank you for this information.
Thank you. Yes I basically shoot manual mode with most of these. The external meter will be more reliable anyway in most cases.
You can buy Wein cell batteries on EBay.
@@crispin8888 i just got one for my OM1. Meter now gives the same exposure reading as my OMD, so that battery is perfect.
@@rickbaker1431 Excellent. Wein cells aren't so long-lasting but they are accurate.
My dad loved the OM1 system. My mom refuses to part with her OM1 and lenses. She’s 84.
Aww. I can imagine
I just saw a M system lens on Ebay. 50mm f/1.4. I was really surprised!
Great video! You have a fantastic voice.
+Marcus Portelli Agreed
+Marcus Portelli Thanks. What a nice thing to say.
You don't need to press the depth of field preview button to take the lens off.
You're right.
I have an OM-2n with Zuiko 50 1.8 lens which I bought from a guy on facebook for about $250 and I can say mine is in really good condition, it looks like new
Great presentation. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Thank you.
