      Thank you very much for your feedback! In think, in 1979 the OM-1 was also updated to the OM-1n. But the changes are so minor that maybe almost no one would care today about those updates.

    First things first. As a Porsche engineer, who I am, I can definitely and totally unbiased tell you, that you never ever need a Ferrari, when you have a Porsche. No matter what. 😁😁
    After using some rangefinder and lots of SLR cameras, my personal choice would always be the SLR.
    I did not follow all the Camera A and B examples, but there is always a slight shift in perspective especially for vertical shots. This is maybe the most obvious difference between the two cameras in terms of images quality. IMHO.
    😄🖖

      Hi Manu! I’m not the hugest of sports car guys but I know that as a child I always lusted for the Porsche 936 for my Carrera slot racing tracks, but admittedly I already had the Ferrari 312T formula one car 😅
      The perspective: maybe because the Leica‘s lens is offset compared to the viewfinder, that will introduce that slight shift in perspective. At least for vertical shots?
      I am with the other comments: the Leica lens (a 1990s Summicron 50 which is a 1979 optical design) will beat the OM Zuiko. But personally I don’t really care so much because I’m not after the very best technical result, I’m more after a certain „vintage“ or „classic“ look. If I had a Leica, it most likely would be an M2 with 1950s/1960s glass … not the M6.
      Having said that, I do get why some photographers would want that bit more technical quality than the 70s Zuiko‘s can deliver, and thus might opt for a Leica M with more current glass.

    I agree that most of the OM Zuiko glass was from the 70's. However, in 1995 a late entry OM zuiko 35-80mm F2.8 constant aperture zoom was introduced with the OM-3Ti camera. Featuring ED and anomalous dispersion glass, this is one of finest zoom lenses I have ever used. True the zuiko 250mm F2 and 180mm F2 lenses are unattainable for most, but this 35-80mm F2.8 still is.

    I had an OM1 in the late 70s to early 80's. Very good camera. The F3 and FA I got next were better. I liked the Zuiko 135mm f/2.8 a little more than the Nikkor though. The 50mm Zuiko MC and " Made In Japan" Multicoated versions became better than the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 when they were changed to a Summicron like 6 elements in 4 groups.

      Olympus never managed to produce a real "professional-grade" body, Nikon did. So the OM-1 and even the OM-3 and OM-4 never were a real match for the Nikon F3!

    I love my OM-1 (and OM-2). I grew up shooting film, and in my opinion the OM-1/2 are the best film SLRs out there. The OM cameras have the same body size as a Barnack Leica, and can fit in a large jacket pocket. If I shoot with a fine grained film, like Ektar, the scans are almost indistinguishble from a digital camera until you zoom in to 100% and can see the grain.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

    Thank you! I have a Leica and an Olympus. You are right about the limited choices of lenses, but for both. Especially if you are on a budget. For Leica, I find this easier, because faster lenses (more expensive) only help for darker conditions. For Olympus, they also give a brighter view and more accurate focussing. Furthermore, for a Leica, the longest focal length I find practical is 75 to 90. Whatever lens you use, only the frame lines change, not the image. Changing shutter speed while composing is easy with the Olympus. With the Leica I have to take the camera down. A great advantage of the Olympus can be that for travel I can use a mild zoom. With the Leica, I always take at least two lenses. Fortunately they are small and light. I cannot say which camera is my favourite. I wish I could, because it would save me from making a decision when I go away and after selling one camera, I could take pictures with the remaining camera of the wonderful dinners I could afford with the new money.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

      Thanks a lot for your comment. You are so right about the zoom lenses: that’s a concept that doesn’t really work with Leica even though they did make some efforts with their Tri-Elmars 28-35-50 and there also was the Wide-Angle Tri-Elmar. But those are very expensive while a OM Zuiko zoom is just a few Euro‘s … I am a bit snobby and never shoot zoom‘s but really, I should give it a try once!
      I guess as a serious classic camera lover you will always end up buying a Leica at some point and maybe so will I … but for me it is 100% mandatory to own a nice SLR system (like the Olympus) for my everyday use !!

    Excellent comparison review Tom. Thanks. I did clearly see that the camera B had clearer sharper pictures and I guessed correctly that it was the Leica. Was the difference 4000 euros to 200 euros different. No. The value for money is the Olympus. Most of us in the real world can’t buy Porsche or the Ferrari. We buy Ford, Mini, VW, maybe BMW etc. The Olympus or similar maker camera’s of that period (Nikon/Pentax) are what we do and should buy. Yes if we win the Lottery we can go out and buy the Leica and put it our Ferrari as decoration- but in the meantime we live in the real world ....

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

      Thanks Alan! I agree. Maybe I also should have pointed out that the way how we perceive "image quality" today might have changed a lot compared to when these cameras were new. I mean, if you really want perfect I.Q., you go digital anyway. All those analog 35mm cameras will never match the modern 40+ MP sensors in that regard. And also, if you want ultimate I.Q. in analog, you'd maybe rather go medium format than look for the ultimate analog 35mm camera
      ... nonetheless, of course, I enjoyed shooting this M6 a lot, and I appreciate its high quality. And yes, if money was no subject, I'd follow my own words and get the Leica, but not the M6. I'd rather go for the M2/M4 or (if money really was no object) for a new M-A. But I guess even then I'd still shoot my old SLR cameras instead for most of the time! Because they're such great and versatile cameras!

    My Om1n and Om2n have been taking a back seat recently as I have discovered the beautiful Asahi Pentax pre-Spotmatic SLR's. I have a K, H2 and S3. They are a joy. However, your video has reminded me why I fell in love with the OM's. The shutter sound, feel in the hand, viewfinder and sheer beauty of design. Also the Zuiko lenses are superb to handle.
    I have also started to re-use my Canon P recently and again your recent video is partly the reason! Possibly the camera that gives me a similar thrill in winding on and firing the shutter is the last Kodak Retina series from the late 1950's. These are so well made and compact.
    Look forward to more of your videos - I feel we have the same appreciation for classic cameras.

      About a month ago, a friend showed me his "new" Pentax S1a and it immediately made me shop for another Spotmatic and Super Takumar 55 and 135 lenses 😀
      I took my new Spotmatic for a photo walk and found myself constantly changing between the two lenses. M42 screwmount can get a bit time consuming and the OM-1 is just more practical. Actually, that day made me now start to browse for a Pentax MX, as I never had one of these so far and they're currently very cheap.
      Sometimes it seems that we camera collectors are all on an orbit that makes us pass any of these great cameras in a regular interval again!

    I bought an OM2 and some lenses off eBay. One lens that I wanted was the 24mm, so on a visit to Bangkok I started looking around the used camera shops in Chinatown. I found one - attached to an OM 2n. A second camera body? Why not. I love using these cameras. I tend to use them in aperture-priority mode and the exposures are always spot on. Yes, I'd love a Leica, but do I really need one? Probably not.

      The OM-2n is actually one of the best old electronic cameras I think. I am always a bit scared about reliability because we're talking 40+ years old electronic circuits, but the OM-2n makes up for that with that super-cool light metering and exposure system that can also take long-time exposures with high accuracy (if you factor in the reciprocity failure of your film ...). And it looks every bit as beautiful as the OM-1!

    My favourite cameras due to ergonomics, handling, and balanced optical qualities: Leica M3, Leica M2, Olympus OM1. The Zuiko 50/1.4 has a smooth rendering of light, the 50/1.8 (MiJ) has qualities similar to the Summicron, the 100/2.8 renders fine details similar to a 90/2.8 Elmarit and also surprisingly similar to the 50/2 Summicron DR on the rangefinder M3/M2. The Zuiko 135/2.8 reminds me of the Mandler lenses. Most OM Zuiko lenses are balanced in similar fashion to the Leica R glass in some areas. I have all these lenses and more… Most Zuiko lenses have a short focus throw - fast focus, quicker photo taker. They are simple, and help to focus on picture taking. A joy to use. Never sell my Oly OM1 with. 50/1.4.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  5 месяцев назад

      Many thanks for your comment! I just got the Zuiko 50/1.4 (silver nose) which is a perfect match to my first-generation OM-1. Apart from when I do reviews or check out more exotic cameras for fun, I use either the OM-1 or Pentax MX for my regular analog photography. Sometimes I prefer the more comprehensive information in the viewfinder of the MX and also when using a flash the OM-1 with its brittle plastic flash shoe is simply annoying. But then I always come back to the OM-1 after some time because they’re so simple and beautiful. Both to look at and in use! And as you say some of the OM Zuiko glass is very special (but some of the Pentax K and M lenses are as well!)

    Liked your compare. I learned to photograph on rangefinders eventually a Leica III and its Cannon sibling. Found the SLRs of the 60s and early 70s heavy and clunky. I bought my first new camera an Olympus 2n. I used that for most of my personal needs and professional needs. I use to take slides for myself, make professional presentations, do fashion work, and used for product shots. Loved using its flash system, so simple yet effective. The viewfinder was the best for slides, as it could register the slide perfectly; you need a good lab though as the poor ones cut the slides wrong sometimes then you needed to re-shoot.
    Now I use several OM-1s and a OM1n; they are like potato chips it is hard to just eat one, for pleasure. I am just some how attracted to its mechanical feel (If my eyes were shut it would be hard for me to tell the difference between OM1s and OM2s). Looking to get a Leica as it has its own joy to use most likely a III.
    If you want a sharper lens try the macro 50mm f3.5 (inexpensive) or the f2 model (expensive). I generally have a 3.5 with me when taken photos about. Use of long lens hood does help the older glass also, I use to have a picture of one of favorite landscape photographers using what look like a 12 in hood. The later 40mm f2 is exceptionally good, but too expensive for me to walk around with.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  4 месяца назад

      Many thanks for your comment and insight. I love to read about personal experiences with these cameras! The Olympus OM-2 introduced TTL flash, I think it was the first SLR camera that had it at all. I really don’t like using flash on the OM-1 / 2 though because the flash hot shoe adapters are so flimsy. And now (40+ years later) the plastics has become so brittle that they all will basically break into pieces when you use them. I have got the 50/3.5 macro as well and actually all the analogue black and white image scans you see in my videos are made using that lens on a digital camera!
      Just a few days ago I got an OM-2 and it’s currently at om-labor.de for repair / maintenance. I am really eager to shoot the OM-2 as well this spring and summer!

    Had a "don't meet your heros" moment when I used my friends Leica. Compared to my OM1 & OM2 the Leica had a worse shutter, worse focus element, worse ergos and I wasn't a massive fan of the tiny oddly placed focus lever on the lens. Also, the OM2/OM-g has the shutter speed read out in the display and has auto shutter speed as well!
    It was cool, sure... but it had me immediately missing my OM systems. The Zuiko lenses are arguably just as good, if not better, than some Leica lenses.
    Also, Porsche has 19 LeMans wins, and 108 class victories... Ferrari has 9 LeMans wins, with only 35 class wins 😉. The 911 is a cheaper vehicle, that out performs its more expensive competition, just like the Olympus!

    When I was at school in the 80s my older brother had left a photography gear book lying around the house. It had both the Olympus OM-1 and OM-2 but also the Pentax MX and ME. I just loved the style of these cameras and to me these were the classic SLRs even more appealing than the Nikon and Canons of that era. About 10yrs ago I got the Pentax MX with 50mm f1.7 and just love it. Marginally smaller and lighter than the Olympus OM-1 (and I mean marginally) but wit( the biggest, brightest viewfinder one could imagine, it’s a joy to compose and focus with. And I can used my Pentax Limited lenses from the 2000s as these have the aperture rings and actuator works the same still. 31mm f1.8, 43mm f1.9 and 77mm f1.8 so great lens options to keep using the MX and film

      Oh yes, the MX and ME are extremely nice cameras, and yet I never used either one of these so far. Only the K1000. In general, Pentax is a bit of a niche these days but in fact it's the last existing and actively supported SLR system out there! Compared to Olympus, yes, you have much more choice of lenses.
      Personally, I have a huge soft spot for the old M42 Pentax bodies but I agree with you that also ME, MX and others are extremely attractive and in a way I also understand why you'd prefer Pentax and Olympus over Nikon and Canon!

I have two Olumpus cameras; OM-1 and OM-1n, I have not tried to photograph with Leica cameras because their prices scare me, it is a cult of luxury, they really do not interest me. I could go out of my way and buy one, but I'm so happy with these Maitani jewels that it doesn't leave me room to try other cameras, as the saying goes......The best camera is the one you like!!! !

    Hi Thomas, I agree every thing you said in the video. I own the Olympus OM-1 as well as the Om-2n , both in black and brassed after long loving use. They are beautiful cameras and a joy to make photography with. Last week I picked up a Leica MP black paint. The moment I handled the Leica I can feel the superior quality of its construction and materials ( a mint Olympus might gives a different feel too). The movement of the mechanical parts is indeed 'Perfect'. It is not difficult to tell which photo was taken by the Leica or the Olympus, for me the 50mm 1.8 gives away the clue. It is a good lens but still very basic. I would not hesistate to invest an expensive lens on my brand new MP and I will not forget to give some love to the Olympuses.

    What a wonderfully useful video - thanks! I use Olymnpus OM cameras but have been wondering about whether or not the extra expense of a Leica would be worth it. As I always have two cameras on the go - one with colour film and one with black and white - the expense would be great. Your explanation of the differences and comparison of images from both cameras convinced me to stick with what I have! BTW, I have used the OM1, OM2 and OM4 - every one of them a great camera, but in my view the OM2n is the best: it has more advanced features than the OM1, but no fancy stuff that I don't need, like the OM4. And although 1980s Zuiko lenses can be expensive because of the collectors' market, they are a lot cheaper than Leica equivalents. The 90/f2 Macro is my favourite - worth every penny I paid for it.

      There are some gems in the OM Zuiko lineup and the 90/2 Macro surely is one of them. I've been shooting a lot with the 28/2 recently which is also a great lens ... it's a super versatile focal length, it's fast, small and very good!
      And I agree, the OM-2n is super comfy and easy to use and has that gorgeous off-the-film metering! I also tried the OM-4 but it didn't really appeal to me that much. Well I love it for its unique design and features, but it's not a camera that I'd need for my day-to-day shooting!

      It’s a good question how much the light meter will be off when using the wrong batteries. Frankly in my short non scientific testing with a not converted OM-1 I didn’t notice much of a difference but I am told that linearity of the metering will suffer as well, meaning that at the very ends of the spectrum (extreme ISO settings, very long shutter times and open aperture; and opposite …) it might be off more. I didn’t check that …
      All my OM cameras I have serviced and the light meters converted at OM-Labor in Frankfurt, Germany. It’s om-labor.de … I don’t know where you come from and if this helps. I don’t know any current addresses of similar services in the UK, US or elsewhere, unfortunately. If anyone else reading this can help out there, that would be great!

      @@winc06 Yes. My camera was modified internally. There are also adapters available that just fit in the battery chamber where you place a modern 1.5V battery and inside the adapter there's something integrated to convert to 1.35V.
      I've got three OM-1 bodies and actually two of them were recently converted and also adjusted by a repair shop specialized in servicing OM cameras. Still, the readings are a bit different between the three bodies. I guess you can't compare the whole meter design with modern ones in terms of precision. Having said that, I always get good exposures with my cameras. But then, I only shoot black&white or color negative film.

    Nice video as usual (high quality and honest) but a little bit apples and oranges, SLR vs rangefinder, they are too different in shooting style and operation. Maybe Leica M vs Bessa or Z Ikon. I think it more boils down to shooting style preference, SLR or rangefinder. Also, there is so much more to the Leica M system that is a reason for buying into it. E.g. the lens availability (which is huge, including LTM and other brands), the quality and durability of the lenses, fast operation with zone focusing etc. And you'll be able to service it for the rest of your lifetime. Anyway, cool comparison, OM is really a classic too!

And that happened because the buyers of 35mm systems back then directly compared these offerings as well ...

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +1

      Thanks for your comment! I normally shoot the 28/3.5 at f/5.6 or f/8. It's certainly not as super-sharp in the corners of the frame as some of today's high-quality lenses, but I find that especially on analog my photos with it are sharp. I don't notice any particular problem with field curvature. But again, I'm almost never shooting the lens at open aperture - all these 1960s/1970s wide-angle designs are not as good as modern glass there!
      Having said all that, there is a big possibility for sample variation. These lenses are 40-50 years old. If you're really worried about the image quality of your sample, it should be very inexpensive to look for a second lens.
      There also is the later 28mm f/2.8, but I don't have a lot of experience with that lens. What I do know is that most (if not all) of the f/2.8's are mulit-coated, whereas the old f/3.5's are not, and in situations where you are shooting against the sun this really shows.

      I guess the reason for this is that especially Nikon was much more successful in the pro / advanced market in comparison to Olympus, so today there's just a bigger pool of used lenses that you can still buy, which keeps prices a bit lower.

    Errrr.... good video, but just a little arbitrary thing you missed out, image quality. I had 2 OM2s but went to Nikon FE2s because the Zuiko lenses just didn't cut the mustard for my black and white printing. When buying cameras lense (image quality) should be the main priority, then camera body.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  10 месяцев назад

      I absolutely agree that lenses are very important yes, for sure. If you want the best modern glass there is, Leica M is the way to go.
      But I actually don’t agree on that OM Zuiko lenses are worse than Nikkor‘s per se! Maybe you’re using your Nikon with high quality modern 3rd party glass like Voigtländer or Zeiss? That’s of course not available for the OM system, true! But my Nikons with the typical AI or AIs Nikkor lenses (most of which are 1970s optical designs just as OM Zuiko lenses) don’t give images that show any discernible differences to what I get with the OM Zuiko lenses.
      Olympus also updated some lenses a bit over the years, there are many photographers who prefer the "MC" versions even though I personally love the ones with older, simpler coatings just as well. But, sure, when buying Olympus you're basically locked into 1970's / early 1980's lens tech.
      Nikon made some more modern designs such as the IF-ED 300mm f/4.5 (just one example) which are not available for Olympus in the same quality ... but most AI / AIs lenses were also very "classic" designs right to the end of production. Again, I don't see any general difference in lens quality. Choices for NIkon are bigger, though. That's true.

      Hi! Are you looking for an ultra-wide angle lens for Leica M or for Olympus OM? In the latter case, I cannot really help you because the widest lens from Olympus was the Zuiko Auto-W 18mm f/3.5 (note they also had a 16mm fisheye).
      In the 1970s, super-wide was the one area of lens design that was really far behind today's standards!
      If you're looking for Leica M glass, then there are a few modern options, amongst the more affordable ones there are the Voigtländer superwides, they offer some lenses with 10mm, 12mm and 15mm!

      aaah, okay. It depends on which focal length you really want, and on your budget. The widest native Canon lens is the 11-22 zoom. So that's maybe the only option with auto focus for the Canon M mount.
      Sadly, there are much less lenses released for the Canon EOS-M mount than for Sony, Fuji etc. but still there are some manual focus options. For example:
      Laowa 9mm f/2.8:
      www.venuslens.net/product/9mm/
      7Artisans 12mm f/2.8:
      7artisans.store/products/12mm-f2-8
      Samyang 12mm f/2:

      Samyang 10mm f/2:
      www.samyanglens.com/en/product/product-view.php?seq=343
      (note I would NOT recommend this lens cause it is originally designed for DSLR cameras, so the version for EOS-M is very bulky and also the other options above will be a bit better in terms of optical performance)

    I recently purchased an Olympus OM-1N. I added a Zinc-air battery and tested the lightmeter against two other cameras and a cellphone app. The lightmeter appears to be 2 stops off. I took a reading outside with the external lightmeter set for ASA400. I set the OM-1N to the f-stop and shutter speed from the external lightmeter and in order to get the needle in the center, I had to raise the ASA to 1600 (2 stops). Has anyone seen this issue before?

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  19 дней назад

      So the OM-2n reading is 2 stops too low? Mmh it could be that the calibration is off, it could happen when someone took the top cover off and did some mistake when putting the camera back together (yes I did experience this same fault once on one of my OM-1‘s and it was corrected by re-assembling the camera correctly) … or, of course, also the meter cell itself could be faulty. Hard to judge from a distance.

      @davidsanderson3693 19 дней назад

      @@tomscameras Since it would cost more to have a camera repair-person open it up than what I paid for the camera, my solution is to not use any filmstock with ASA greater than 400. That way I can do the two stop shift without going beyond the end of the dial. I have other Olympus cameras (OM-10FC and OM-2SP), that have light meters that work correctly, which I can use with faster film. This illustrates the risk with the purchase of used equipment.

    I am sorry. You make great videos and thank you for that. But you cannot compare any range finder camera with an SLR like this. The quality of the images is not at stake, but the different things both types have to offer. Zoom lenses, macro, filter correction, easy pol filter adjustment, speed of focussing, cleat view finder, etc. I have an Olympus OM4 and a Leica MP. Both with excellent lenses, but completely different cameras.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  Год назад +2

      Thanks Robert, I'm always happy also to read more critical comments! And yes, comparisons sometimes are made between apples and oranges. Even though I think that in this case, there are enough reasons why it's not apples and oranges:
      (1) the OM-1 was really designed by Maitani and as with his previous design, the PEN-F, he took the Leica M as an inspiration.
      That's why (2) the size and weight of the OM-1 really match the Leica M, and not the much bigger / more heavy SLR cameras of the time. So, in my opinion, if you went to a store in the early 1970s and were looking for a "compact" camera system, both OM and Leica M were real possibilities! (I think back then the price difference was already big, but Leica wasn't as outrageously expensive as today.)
      (3) all the differences between SLR and rangefinders that you point out are true! But especially Leica really stuck to the rangefinders for a long time and tried to market them as a real SLR alternative until maybe well into the 1960s. In the end, we know that this strategy didn't work out, sure!
      (4) and also there's the question about how we use analog cameras today! I mean, who's gonna shoot an analog SLR with a 300+ mm supertele or a real macro lens today. Most people would rather stick to (super-)wide, standard and maybe portrait lenses when shooting analog SLR cameras. So a part of the extended possibility of SLR vs. rangefinder is not really used anymore, because in those cases (like macro, supertele) you'd go digital anyway these days.
      So those are the reasons why I think it's okay to compare the Olympus SLR vs. the Leica rangefinder. But as with all comparisons, maybe just take it with a grain of salt.

  • @StanNoteboom
    @StanNoteboom 3 месяца назад +2

    You should restate your question, not is the Olympus 20 times worse than the Leica, you should frame the question as, “Is the Leica really 20 times better than the Olympus?”. (Hint: I think not.) Remember, Leica can’t find enough working photojournalists to sell to, so their alternative is to sell luxury goods in the form of a camera. They may be good, but nowhere that good to justify their price. They may be 1-2% better in SOME things but other than photo aficionados, no one can tell the difference. Buy a Leica as a status symbol, but as a good working camera, keep your money and keep shopping. ( I had an OM-1, a good place to start. ) Also, don’t overlook the huge market of used recent cameras, like since 2010 and newer. Plenty of great previous “flagship “ cameras for sale used.

    • @tomscameras
      @tomscameras  3 месяца назад

      I don’t blame Leica on being a luxury brand these days. In the end, they wanted to kill the M line back in the 1970s and concentrate on their SLR system. But even back then it was demand from customers that led to the relaunch of the M4 made in Canada at the time … the rangefinders are a niche today but even though it’s not really “mine” I am very happy that the M system still exists, now 70 full years after its introduction! I am currently shooting the original digital Leica M8 for a review and I have to say that the digital M makes more sense to me … it recreates the experience of shooting a beautiful analog camera, something that no other digital camera can do. (No, also not Fuji or the Nikon Df or Zf.) Now if there were a digital version of the classic Olympus OM-1 … 😴
