SWFL Eagles ~ Stop That Mom!! Harriet's Long Grooming Session ~ Allopreens E17 & E18! 😊 3.18.21

  • Harriet gives both E's a long session in allopreening or grooming of their feathers. The eaglets are acquainted with preening themselves but not with Mom allopreening them. This is a natural grooming instinct of birds to keep their feathers in good shape and to distribute oil from the uropygial gland located at the base of the tail to distribute to their feathers to waterproof them.
Harriet starts allopreening E18 who ends up moving around to get away from her grooming but is trapped on the nest lol Harriet will then start allopreening E17 and she goes back and forth between her E's! This is another rite of passage as Harriet has allopreening all of her eaglets! Thank you for watching!
Video captured & edited by Lady Hawk
Thank you SWFEC , hosted by Dick Pritchett Real Estate, for allowing us the opportunity to view these amazing eagles.

Allopreening or grooming of the feathers is an important instinct of all birds to keep their feathers in good shape and to distribute the oil from the uropygial gland located at the base of the tail to distribute to their feathers to waterproof them. Birds personally groom, smooth and care for their feathers with their beak or bill. It involves three different actions, stroking, wiping and nibbling. The act of preening returns the feathers to their correct position and reattaches the barbs that separate (called zipping). The bird will also wipe the feathers with their beak - pressing the feathers together and working it into the feathers, spreading the oil they squeeze from the uropygial gland. The eagle will extract oil by squeezing the gland. While this oil doesn’t actually waterproof the feathers, it does condition the feathers and makes them subtle so the tiny barbs will form the tight bond of the feather which helps keep the water out. The oil cleans and also helps to deter feather parasites & destructive bacteria. The oils from the preen gland help the feathers stay shiny and resist ultra violet radiation from the sun. (As a side note, the oil contains vitamin D and is converted through ultraviolet exposure from the sun into vitamin D3, which the bird ingests when preening.) In addition, Harriet is the Queen of Preen so naturally she will want her eaglets to be in tip top shape as well!

Naturally she will - no matter how much the E's hate it! 😁 Oh Harriet, you are the best, you beautiful Queen of Allopreen😊🥰
