    I drove old Loadstars for the Illinois Highway Dept in the 80’s, I believe they were 1850 Loadstars. 392 V8 engines. They were fun to plow heavy wet snows with, our mechanic put dual exhaust on them and big open truck mufflers, they sounded sweet under a heavy load pushing snow. Ours never started hard like this, not normal for a binder

  • @SuperKONR
    @SuperKONR Год назад +3

    Might want to change the oil now that you have a half tank of gas in the crankcase lol. That's sure a nice truck! Love those Loadstars.

  • @michaelchan8915
    @michaelchan8915 Год назад +3

    Old 70s era International Loadstars have a special place in my heart. They bring back memories of my childhood, riding in the buses. Only the Loadstars had that distinct "whine" sound to them that I remember so clearly. How I would dream of being able to drive one, just to relive those memories!!! Let alone own one like you are so fortunate enough to!!! That said, I can feel how hot those battery cables and starter must be getting as you're cranking on that engine so long. One last question. Why oh WHY is the engine painted yellow, instead of the OEM red?!!! Nice truck by the way. I still remember the shift pattern too. If it's a five speed, 1st and 2nd should be at the top if I remember correctly.

    • @saltolamachs
      @saltolamachs  Год назад

      Thanks! Yeah, I now know what it did wrong in this video, I was flooding it with too much choke. This is my dads truck which he had the heads redone many years ago. He said he repainted it caterpillar yellow cause he thought it may give it more power! It’s a 5 speed with a two speed rear end, it’s reverse is top left but the rest of the gears are in the typical pattern.

    • @michaelchan8915
      @michaelchan8915 Год назад

      @@saltolamachs Ahhh the good old Cat engines. That explains the yellow colour. Interesting that reverse is to the top and left while 1st is to the left and down. That's the pattern used by Clark transmissions if I'm not mistaken. I always remembered the Loadstars having 1st to the top and left. So if you were to start off in 1st, you would be going down into neutral and to the middle gate and back up again. But if I'm not mistaken, 1st is geared so low that the engine is screaming its lungs out before you even reach 5 mph that you almost always start off in 2nd gear anyways. The school buses I remembered riding in had the more square shaped body than yours. I also remembered them being equipped with the 345 V8. Given that they were my favorite buses to ride in because of the whiny sound of the engine, I've always wanted to get the opportunity to drive one, one day just to relive those memories. I don't think I would have any problem driving it either, since I've now been turning wrenches at a dealership for a living for almost thirty years. It's nice to see trucks like this still on the road.

    • @saltolamachs
      @saltolamachs  Год назад

      @@michaelchan8915 Well 1st gear is extremely low in this one. One odd thing tho is that 4th and 5th are basically the same ratio and the truck only tops out at 45mph. So there could have been something changed when it used to be a highway plow. It has the 404 V8, and what always stands out to me is how low or bassy the engine rumbles.

    Those IH V-8s were always cold blooded. I remember in the early '70s being late for school because they couldn't get the buses started. It is probably even worse now because the gasoline is formulated for fuel injection and doesn't atomize as well in a carburetor when it is cold

    • @dwi189
      @dwi189 Год назад

      Back in the early 1980's, the school district that I attended had a fleet of International S series busses with the 345 V8.
      One windy rainy morning, our bus was late picking us up....The driver told us that the ignition systems on a number of the busses had gotten wet and the busses would not start.
      Our driver and some of his coworkers convinced the district to start buying diesel busses which they did going forward.

    It just started and I caught a glimpse of that Accel coil that needs removed and tossed into the trash and a stock coil put back in its place. You'll get more spark out of a stock coil and a hotter spark too. Quit pumping that gas peddle while cranking the engine. That's why it's not starting.
