Nice! I also have a -85 DL with B200K engine, and what I usually do when starting it is get the choke all the way open, and the car always starts right away. After getting the car to start, I adjust the choke to a more appropriate state :D It has always started, even when it was -25 Celsius and no problems :D These things are great, and thanks to fact they were designed in the cold north like Sweden, they are also suitable for finnish winters :D
On my B230a I pull the choke 2/3 while cranking and 1/2 when it fires up. Even after storage for 3 seasons it starts after 2-3 cranks on a low battery. U used to have a dead battery that would only crank it once per second and only 4 times. Used it like that for a couple years, because it Always started
Thank you, it felt a bit hopeless the first few cranks but I was really eager and hopeful to see if it would start. Luckily it managed to start before my battery was completely drained.
Thank you for this sharing Good memories for fetish of cranking (like me) but .....bad memories for drivers having important appointments in winter ! Old time that young driver don't know today
your engine needs attention, I had one like that ( B21A) it never be difficult to start in cold weather, it started at the first or secons started pull,. A littel trick: if uou have a SU or stromberg carb, when you stop the engine, sa soon you cut the ignition, pull the choke fully on, the lasts engine revolutions will fill the fuel canals in the carburetor making it ready to start, this is not sufficient to flood the engine and a cold start will need much less cranking, usually, the engine starts at the first starter pull.
It definitely appears that something is faulty considering that it is a car designed for harsh and cold Scandinavian winters. Great tip, many thanks! I will give that a try next time I cold start it.
Is it a carb model? It surprised me how much effort it still took (although, naturally, it made it eventually). My 1988 360 GLT with the B200E fuel injected engine almost starts better at freezing temperatures like this than it does on a 30 degrees C summer day.
Yes, it has a carburetor (B23A engine) which might explain why it requires more effort to get it running in this cold weather compared to your fuel injected 360. Still, I am also surprised as it is quite hesitant to start even at 0ºC if I don't use my engine block heater. Carbureted cars are notorious for generally being more difficult to start but I doubt it was like this when new. I suspect it might have an issue that I need to look into - it being 35 years old with 382,000 km on the clock makes it a bit tired as well, I suppose.
@@Auto_Lore that could be true! I'm not sure if it's the case on a B230, but my previous 340 with the carburetor B14 engine had an electrically controlled extra idle jet for cold starts. If that doesn't work you're just relying on the choke and the primary jet. So either the temperature sensor or the cold idle jet being faulty could also cause a difficult start on freezing days.
I would've sprayed a strong shot of ether in the carburetor ahead of time rather than risk killing the battery or worse, burning out the starter. Worked like a charm for me 20 years ago, depending on an old carbureted F150 to get to work on cold New England mornings.
@@frisomeijering3270 Mine starts with no choke in extreme cold providing I do long cranks. Pull choke to full the second it fires up and it will run perfectly. Please try and do a video to show.
Låter som om snabb tomgången inte är ansluten. Min hade liknande fel innan jag hittade att jag inte hade kopplat choke kabeln rätt. Sounds like fast idle is not connected. Mine had similar problems before I found that I had not connected the choke cable correctly.
You have some serious issues with this engine for sure, a good red block engine should start easy in -14C, it would start even in -20C, at least all mine did. Even my old D24 Volvos start in -20 with a good battery and fresh glow plugs. Then with an engine heater there should not be a problem at all, but then it would not really be a cold start either.. :D
you need to learn how to start these old 240's, you stop cranking too soon i have driving these over 40 yrs and never had that much trouble starting one just by throwing a battery in on a by doing this your flooding the engine and will need to change the oil right away, these start at -35 or 40 here in Canada and get that starter fixed before you kill the rest of the car
It didn’t look like he was pumping. I’m not sure if it’s early fuel injection that’s having problems. Or a carburetor that he wasn’t pumping. I grew up with carbureted engines. They started up much easier when I would pump the gas while cranking.
It truly was a stubborn starting vehicle…. I couldn’t tell if you were pumping the gas as you attempted to get it started…. Were you giving it gas, as you cranked it?
You should not pump a Volvo while cold starting. Volvos have constant vacuum carburettors (Stromberg) without acceleration pump, so all you do if you pump the gas is lean the mixture. This is a general rule for all cars with constant vacuum carbs, such as SU or Stromberg. Also pumping the gas before starting has 0 effect in this case as there's no acceleration pump.
@@sietse9920 Ofcourse, when it runs you push in the choke until it runs nice and smooth. If you wouldn’t, the engine will start to run rough as it’s running too rich, and will start running uneven (misfire) after some time. At some point it would stall as either the mixture has become too rich, or the plugs became wet.
By the way, when the engine is cold the fuel in the fuel mixture partly condensates inside the intake manifold, effectively leaning the mixture as the engine isn’t receiving enough fuel in vaporized state. To compensate for this the fuel mixture must be enriched, which is what the choke does. Therefore engines with long intake manifolds and small carbs (so engines with relatively low power output) need more choke than engines with more or bigger carbs and shorter intake runners (usually engines with higher specific output). In the 80s some cars (like the VW Golf II) where equipped with an electric heating element inside the intake manifold, to promote the fuel vaporization, so the engine would need less choke, and improved fuel consumption in the warm-up phase. In fuel injected engines the injectors are placed much closer to the intake runners than a carb would be, hence much less enrichment is necessary (with the exception of single point injection systems).
Låt han försöka att sitta i lite längre, och inte ge allt för möe gas. Han vill ju dö, men mest troligt att inte kall starts ventilen inte vill kicka in riktigt va.
You almost destroyed the engine in this video. At the beginning of 6 minutes you hear all cylinders lose compression. Could have done some serious damage to it if you kept running the starter.

Lovely slow cranking sound, I love a car that’s difficult to start on cold mornings 😍
What kind of car?

I am glad that it finally started for you, but man did I enjoy that cranking show!

How much choke were you using? Try cranking it with no choke and pull it out when it fires up. It won't stall then
It probably wont fire up at all without any choke. It will probably keep turning over without any sign of life in this cold

How may type of Volvo cars available. Each other better than the other
Sounds like it's running a bit lean
That is possible, it feels as if the fuel mixture is a little bit off in general. I will have to look into that and do a tune-up.
