Was Steelers' game plan too vanilla vs. Eagles? Mike Tomlin's clock management questionable?

    We need to get our secondary sorted next season. JPJ been getting cooked all season long. Najee won't be back next year, he's too inconsistent. And Tomlin didn't have these guys ready and Smith took way too long to adjust. Just bad bad bad all around. It exposed what I really feared and that is we're not as good as I think we are.

    The Eagles indeed have quality receivers, but most importantly, they scheme those receivers open. The Steelers don't do that. These are NFL football players. Just because a guy isn't a household name, doesn't mean he isn't talented. The Steelers offense remains unimaginative and archaic. There is only so much Wilson can cover up. The Steelers still neglect certain parts of the field, and create a lot of mano a mano mismatchs instead of scheming for success. All this is coaching and cultural. The coaching was my biggest concern coming into today, not the lack of Pickens as much.

      That’s not an excuse. They knew the entire off-season that they needed more wide receivers. They fail. And the Eagles went more than half of the game without their MVP candidate running back while he was out they still dominated us. No excuses. This team is not good enough to beat the big boys and they haven’t been for most of the last decade all you need to do is look at the record against those teams it’s dismal.

    It's not over yet, and they're probably going to lose at least one more. I don't understand the lack of creativity? Especially with the TEs? Washington, Muth, and Pruitt are capable and could be a strength in the passing game. I don't like the pitch play either. Those are for burners, because the whole defense sees it. Ugly, unimaginative play calling. Punting was accepting the beat down. I still love my Steelers. It'll get better. Hopefully?

    Our secondary SUCKS! It has all year, we have been able to disguise it by letting Russ and the offense outscore some of our opponent's, but overall it has sucked, We have proven time and again that we lack the ability of getting off the field on 3rd down at critical times. Geriatric Joe Flacco carved them up like a Thanksgiving turkey in Indianapolis, Dak Peskot did the same thing to us at home, using receivers outside of CD Lamb. Jamis Winston of all people took his team down the field against our secondary to win the game. The only 2 quality players in our secondary are Elliot and Bishop, Minkah is too old, Jackson is OK but lacks consistency, Pierre and Kazee have proven to be second string level talent, Cam Sutton hasn't been the same since he left and went to Detroit, which brings me to JPJ....This guy is the most overblown / overrated CB in the League, he is absolute garbage. The only reason he isn't on the practice squad is because of Tomlin and his daddy. He is lazy with no sense of urgency. He is scared to tackle. He is the King of missed arm tackles. This is every game, not just once in a while, and to compensate for his fear, he is subject to Major penalties at critical times. He sucks in the Zone package, and not much better in Man to Man. I hope he mans up and learns how to play CB quick because if not he will continue to contribute to a very under performing over rated secondary and you don't win big games with the level of play we have seen from them so far.

    Steelers excellence died with Dan Rooney. Zero playoff wins in seven years. They have beaten one starting quarterback, and two back ups, in the last 12 years in the playoffs. Mike Tomlin has never won a playoff game without at least one of Bill Cowher‘s players on the roster. During the last seven years multiple franchises have started over from scratch and won playoff games with new coaches while we have won ZERO. In the last 12 years we are near the very bottom of the league in playoff victories. That’s it. That’s all you need to know. This team is built to win somewhere between nine and 11 games every year and get bounced out of the playoffs almost immediately. They don’t even put up a fight against the elite teams. They’ll beat fringe playoff teams, they’ll beat wildcard teams, they don’t beat real contenders. They haven’t in a long time. They get killed in the playoffs. This overrated defense gets killed when they face an actual quarterback. To compound matters, they dumped all of their money into defensive players, most of whom disappear in the biggest games and at the worst moments. This team used to never give out giant contracts but still managed to win playoff games because their drafting process replenished their roster constantly. Since they have drafted TJ Watt their performance in the first round of the draft has been miserable. Guys like Terrell Edmunds, Najee Harris, Kenny Pickett, Broderick Jones, Devin Bush. And this year they drafted an offensive lineman who was red flagged for injury and guess what-he is out for the year. Art Rooney tolerates a lot of things that Dan Rooney would not tolerate. I like how everyone assumes the Steelers will just remain excellent even though the person that crafted every Super Bowl team we ever had died. Let’s not forget, Dan Rooney had way more to do with our 70s Super Bowl Steelers than his father. Unless Art Rooney gets his head out of his backside, this team will never win another title again.

      It did but Steelers are right here. Steelers just need a competent receiver at WR2. Not a superstar receiver at WR2. Just a competent receiver who can run routes and get seperation. Van Jefferson gets one catch per game. Van Jefferson had Zero yards yesterday. Zero production from the WR2 on the field in 4 quarters of football. A competent WR2 and Steelers can beat any team.

    Austin has no game plan, brings no pressure when needed most, declining a first and 30 WTF, leaving a mismatch Porter one on one with AJ just ridiculous. Arthur had no game plan, just ran out there and ran stock plays whole first quarter. Najee needs to sit, he stinks.

      Yes thank God we traded a first round draft pick for a safety. A safety that helped us win just enough to move that year‘s top pic out of the position to draft Justin Herbert. We basically traded an opportunity to get Justin Herbert to get a safety who helped us win an extra game or two and then disappeared off the face of the earth after about a year and a half. Awesome job guys. We don’t trade that draft pick and we don’t win enough to get out of the Herbert sweepstakes. That would be OK if it wasn’t for a safety, first of all, and for a safety that wouldn’t last. Terrific job. Look at their first round draft picks since they drafted TJ Watt. It’s a whole lot of mediocrity. I’m so glad they found bargains later in the draft but you can’t punt the first round year after year and keep up with other teams. You just can’t. You’re not winning titles if you keep drafting guys like Terrell Edmunds, Devin Bush, Kenny Pickett, Najee Harris, Broderick Jones, and then an offensive lineman the other teams passed on because they knew he would get injured, and now he’s out for the year predictably. This team has become mediocre from the top down and hasn’t won a playoff game in seven years. People keep acting like there’s no reason to it. Like it’s just bad luck. They blame everything else but the Steelers themselves.

    I do not know if the Steelers can win the next two games😢Arthur Smith is just to predictable and I hope he is not back next year.Toss sweeps are just to stupid.Do not have explosive wide receivers outside Pickens.Not enough targets to Muth.CA111 has improved but the best players are not always on the field..Van Jefferson is at best a fifth receiver.Refs need to be overhauled and certain rules changed for 2025.Mike Tomlin need questions to him to be harsh.Najee will not be back.The defense could not stop the Eagles passing attack.The Eagles exposed the Steelers even more in the secondary.I would rather see consistent pass breakups than interceptions.The defense needs to stop third and long.The Steelers unless they change some horrible tendencies will be one and done in the playoffs.I do not trust the coaching to have a winning game plan against the Ravens,the Chiefs and even the first round opponent in the playoffs.I hate DC Austin defensive scheme not just this game but for the year.Prefer blitzburgh not rush the same four 95 percent of the time.I hope a lot of players are not back next year.Khan I do not always trust.especially with wide receivers.Having faith in this receiver group like they said throughout the season shows the blind leading the blind.Yeah a lot off of topic but I am just venting lol.Momentum occurs however good teams can change it back.The season is about over.The excuse of not gelling is to little to late.Yeah I do not know if the Steelers can not or will not play their best game this year and they better or like they say what were you waiting for?

    • @enjoyer6201
      @enjoyer6201 4 часа назад

      Arthur Smith will absolutely be back next year. Don’t delude yourself. You are right about him, but he does exactly what Tomlin wants him to do. There is a reason why we had the same problem through multiple offensive coordinators. He wants yes men. That’s why Austin is his D coordinator. All of these outdated philosophies and backwards ideas are Tomlin’s. There is a reason why playoff victories started to disappear once Bill Cowher’s players started to retire. And we haven’t won a playoff game ever under Mike Tomlin without one of Bill Cowher‘s players on the roster. This is the longest we have gone without a playoff victory in the Super Bowl era, even the “terrible“ teams in the 80s didn’t go seven years without winning a playoff game. This team is just mediocre, that’s just the way it is. It has been mediocre for most of the last decade they are near the bottom of the league in playoff victories in the last 12 years and have beaten one starting quarterback in the playoffs during that 12 year period. That’s Browns territory. But Art Rooney is it his father so this will continue.

      Wilson literally outran the Eagles to the sideline to pick up a 1st down. Anytime the offense started picking up momentum, they incurred a very costly penalty. Without Pickens, they're not overcoming 2nd and 20.
      The issue is the game plan. Tomlin and Smith decided that Najee was going to run through the Eagles, so they ran the ball into a brickwall on 1st and 2nd down. When they realized that wasn't working, they opted for short passes, which were blown up by an outstanding Eagles LB who doesn't whiff on tackles.
      The Eagles put up a coaching masterclass, whereas Tomlin's team looked very unprepared.

      GTFOH. Van Jefferson had 209 total yards in 17 NFL games last season. Van had one touchdown in 17 games last season. That’s who he is. Had Zero yards yesterday. That is who Steelers knew he was and they put him on the team and at the WR2 position. Traded away the WR1 from the last 5 seasons. George Pickens is now WR1 and he was on the sideline. Playing vs one of the best and complete teams in the NFL. They scored 27 points. Russell had no good receivers on the field. Russell only has one good receiver on the field this season.
