The music is top notch in this game. I beat it way back in the day but its been so long I dont remember much. For me its like playing new and getting to enjoy the graphics update! The lower scores are probably from reviewers who have already played it 20 times on an emulator.
1st time Mario RPG player here and I'm loving this game! I was not a real big fan of RPG games growing up, so this game did not even cross my mind as a "must play" back in the SNES days. Great story telling with a lot of funny "Mario" interactions. Definitely one of my favorite games in 2023 (this year has blessed us with so many great games).
Your BOLD statement of "If I had to choose Mario RPG or Mario Wonder" sold me on RPG. I played it, but never finished it back in 1996 (pesky work and college getting in the way). I had planned on passing on this release, but you got me! My mind was changed. I have the game and I am THOROUGHLY enjoying it. I believe I am past where I would have been in 96. I have 4 stars thus far. Thank you!
I absolutely LOVE the Mario RPG. It was a huge childhood favorite of mine. I hope we get a true sequel one day. Such a faithful remake. I've been wanting this again for years. I played back in the day on a old CRT in the basement.
I could go without the frame rate drops at times, but other than that, it was an awesome experience. They made quality of life improvements that make it an all around solid game.
The frame drops are shocking at times... like the opening of the game with the castle cinematic--pretty much the first thing you see annnnd we're already stuttering, like wtf guys... Other than that, like you said: great game 👍
Mario RPG is a game from my childhood and I loved it enough to go back and play the game over a every few years. So I was ecstatic when they announced this and I picked this up on day one. I love the little tweaks they made to this game they feel like developer updates from your inventory not getting being so restricted to being able to switch out party members in battle. And for the game to retain its story so it still feels like the first real expansion to the Mario world all over again is nice.
Got the original back in '97, my last year of high school; and even though I had been a Nintendo fangirl since the age of 8, SMRPG (at the time it was subtitled Legend of the Seven Stars) was the ONLY game I had on SNES or NES that I finished FIRST. Then I went back and finished a couple of games that I had in my collection at the time (Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, the original SMB...etc.). That game made me go back to gaming at that time. So glad to see it's back, better than ever, got it launch day. I also got SMBW, but yup, I'm playing this more than that one even though I've played and beaten the original! SMBW is a beautiful game though, love the cute map. BTW, new subscriber because you really liked the game, shows you're a man of taste....lol!
Hearing somebody who has played this for the first time say they like it more than Wonder warms my heart. I'm so happy you enjoyed it so much. This is a yearly play game for me I adore it so much. You wouldn't know since it's your first time, but the QoL improvements and aesthetic upgrades enhance the original so beautifully. As somebody who generally prefers nostalgic originals, i actually think moving forward I'd rather replay this remake rather than the snes version. I'm THAT happy with it.
As great as this game is today imagine how good it had to have been more then 25 years ago. I was only a kid then and it blew my mind. One of the most memorable and nostalgic games for me.
Back then I had a friend with a snes. I only at that point had nes haha only getting to play snes at the boy n girls club, mostly mortal combat and rocky rodant, then someone brought LotP, my mind was forever blown but only watched others play. When I found out my friend had it, I started going to his house everyday just to watch him play and try to figure it out with him. He also had Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island which were awesome. He also had Metroid and Mario RPG, they looked sick but
I agree with that final thought. I was way more excited to see SMRPG finally come back than to see SMBW. While I did end up getting blown away by Wonder, RPG was always where it was at.
I remember playing this game with my family back in 1996 when it originally came out. I've played it many times since through a variety of avenues (SNES, SNES Classic, Emulator) so I've probably beaten it between five and ten times. I got this game day one and I've already beaten it. It holds up very well and I'm very happy to hear people are enjoying it. I think for me, the quality of life improvements made a great game even better, and they packed as much charm as they could beyond what they already did in the original. I really hope this leads to a sequel because I feel it would be easy enough for this game to translate into another. Make a new story, new spells, some new mechanics. I REALLY hope it sells well so Nintendo knows a sequel is needed. Great review. Happy you are enjoying it!
I played the original MANY times. I enjoy the additions to the mechanics and think they did a fantastic job orchestrating the soundtrack. My only complaint is how the frames struggle in certain zones of the game.
Have you found the cameos and Easter eggs? You can find Zelda and Metroid related stuff. Along with some other minor stuff. Such a great game. Would love a sequel

So super mario rpg in exp terms Is actually in itself easy overall you can just get away getting to halfway though the game without doing any serious grinding but once you reach star fields I recommend grinding for 2 hours if you do this the exp from the remaining bosses leading up to smithy should put you in the late 20s and in a comfortable spot to finish the game
I just about died when I played the original on the snes. The only part I had a problem with growing up would be that 3d maze. This game would be fun to take a trip down memory lane with a boost.
I only played maybe the first couple hours of the original on emulation. I had a Super Nintendo but never had this game. I'm really enjoying it so far I'm probably halfway through. I love all the Paper Mario and Mario+Luigi games so this is right up my alley. Not the hardest game in the world but really good so far Nintendo did a great remake job like usual.
I played it on the SNES back in the day. I honestly found it really difficult and never was able to get past crocko. Thankfully the controls resonate with me perfectly in the remake! I also really appreciate how all the environments have gorgeous backgrounds! The blue void in the original is a bit ugly to look at nowadays, and can even ruin the immersion if you focus on it too much.
I remember back in the late 90s like 98/99 I would go to the local game trade store and they were selling this game for like $100... I was like who is going to pay that much for a game on last Gen console?! It was an expensive game at release
@randybobandy9828 Old games age like fine wine. ( In terms of value and depending on quality. ) I'm just glad Nintendo is remaking RPG and thousand year door for those who missed these amazing rpg gems. Especially since they're crazy expensive right now.
What makes you the best Nintedotuber is the fact you played sega back in the day. Your realistic at what Nintendo is, and has to do TODAY. Not having played the Snes wont makes you live in the past, likes Nintendo does like doing.
A True Honest Review! Unlike other Reviews online it’s nice to see a honest review and unbiased review. Someone who see this game the way it’s supposed be seen as true classic. A Remake that is well done. A 10 out of 10.
Just beat this game's main story for the 1st time a couple of hrs ago... I hated NOTHING about it, & LOVED everything (from the stunning visuals, to the fresh & funky bangers, to the actually damn good game-play, & the genuinely greatly written characters & story) I mean, I feel like this game managed to strike the right balance between everything...which is rare to see nowadays due to the larger scope in games Also, the battle theme in this game 👏S 👏L👏 A 👏P 👏S 👏hard ngl TLDR : Super Mario RPG fucking rocks
This game was the first time I played it, and I have beaten it. The game is not too hard, but when you start fighting the bosses on post game, they are very difficult. I beat them again and I am on my way to fight Culex a 2nd time. My husband has played this game on snes and said there are some good major changes.
I was a Sega fanboy at first then Nintendo fanboy. I played a little of the original and loved it. Definitely am enjoying this one! Nice 8bit Eric jab! 😅
Wasn't expecting much, but this game is great. I've played the og version so many times as it's one of my favourite games, but I still loved playing through this remake: the visuals, the redone music (and the option to revert to the og if desired), and the quality of life additions. The frame drops in this new version are a bit jarring at times, though thankfully not too frequent. For anyone with a hacked switch, overclocking the CPU and GPU to their max settings takes care of 99% of the stutter. Not that we should have to do that, but that does work. Super nitpicks from a mega fan: the dialogue font looks completely generic and boring relative to the og game (didn't think I'd notice something like that, lol), and the renaming of certain characters/things is just odd: Frogfucius is now "Frog Sage"--that's boring, and the "Koopa Troop" is now "Bowser's Minions"?... ok. That's not as cool. Obviously these aren't very important, but those were such weird changes to make imo.
@9:36 - #RGT, to appreciate the remake even more, I HIGHLY recommend playing the SNES version as well (especially if you've [still] yet to play it): Not just to obtain a more holistic perspective historically, but how well the game has technically progressed!
i’m not an RPG guy but i totally get why it’s better than Wonder to you. the humor, visuals, characters, charm and such are great. Wonder is also great but it’s still just basic Mario, with weak bosses
It came out in 1996. If you were lucky enough to get an N64 at launch or for Christmas, you were most likely playing super Mario 64. If you did not get an n64 that year, you had most likely played super mario RPG that year as a consolation prize. But if you’re a sega kid, you probably had a Saturn.
I was a Sega kid growing up too. I played Mario RPG when I was older on an emulator (like over 20 years ago ). I'm still shocked you went this long without playing it though haha
In the old game you can feel been under level mostly in the volcano but this game they make it pretty easy so that everyone appreciate the update visuals
I had a SNES growing up but got a Sega Saturn in 1996, so I didn't buy Super Mario RPG because I was busy with my Saturn- the last game I remember buying for SNES was Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Quest (awesome game, btw). Super Mario RPG came out in the tail end of the SNES' life. I remember seeing Super Mario RPG in Kmart and my 8 year old self thought "what the heck is RPG?" Lol. Fast forward 10 years later- I was in college and came home from winter break. I decided to replay some of my classic SNES games. I replayed all the Mario games, A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid, to name a few. I then remember I had a list of games I wanted to play- Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG were on that list. So I went to craigslist and got into contact with a dude that sold me both games (in the original boxes and original artwork) for $40 each, which was a lot for me back then. But wow, I had such a blast with Super Mario RPG. Everything was smooth as butter. It was actually my first foray into turn based RPGs.
Good video. I've never played this either growing up and grabbed it on sale for $40. Looking forward to the experience. Can't wait for the paper Mario remake that's another one I never played either.
11:30 If people loved the original game they'd be very happy with the new cutscenes. But it's true that $60 for the first official portable version of the game, cutscenes, graphical polish like the reflecting marbled floors and the dynamic lighting inside caves might be a bit much to ask. It's not exactly blood from a stone but still maybe a bit much.
I haven't pre ordered a game in over a decade. I pre ordered this one because that's hose much I loved it as a kid. Especially when I found out the didn't "fix" for the modern player.
I’m almost done with Super Mario RPG, and as a first timer as well, I think I prefer this to Wonder as well! I loved Wonder too, but this game is a great time.
As someone who played the original to death day one buy was a no brainer for me. I’ve beaten this game 100 times before and I’ll beat it 100 times again.
I was a sega kid, too, so i never got a chance to play this game either back then. Glad it came back on switch . It's pretty good, a little too easy but good.
Was on the fence about buying this one, especially since I already got SMB Wonder, but after watching yours and a couple of other videos on the game, you knocked me off of the fence. I'll be including this one on my Christmas list to myself.
Love this game, loved the original, it’s simple and fun. Too many complex games these days, it’s a breath of fresh air to have a minimal game that still has depth.
11:29 _"You might want to... wait for a price drop or something."_ Ah. So he wasn't kidding about not being a Nintendo RUclipsr, I see. Any Nintendo nerd would know that that price drops _never_ happen
I got my copy today at Target for 39.99 before my 5 percent discount so all in all worth it and I missed this one back in the day so glad I’ll get to play it with a new coat of paint

RGT Has proven by not having player mario rpg that he truly isn't and will never be a nintendo youtuber
Truly. Not having player Super Mario RPG solidifies him as not a Nintendo RUclipsr🤣🤣
So true
lmao imagine being so salty that people associate you with the fanbase that you built your entire channel off of
There was that time in '85 ;-)
I mean bro didn’t even own a Super Nintendo growing up what!
As someone who DID play it as a child, you don’t need a review because you already bought it
I just about died when I played the original on the snes.
This was one of my favorite snes games, and the first snes game I completed back in the day. I'm looking forward to hoing through it again.
I still play the original game all the time. I actually played through it right before they announced it. I will keep playing it over and over 😊
I'm loving the game, as I knew I would, having played the original. It's my GOAT and I'm so pleased to get to experience it again on the Switch.
I'm glad you finally "player" it
Just beat this game's main story for the 1st time a couple of hrs ago...
I hated NOTHING about it, & LOVED everything (from the stunning visuals, to the fresh & funky bangers, to the actually damn good game-play, & the genuinely greatly written characters & story)
I mean, I feel like this game managed to strike the right balance between everything...which is rare to see nowadays due to the larger scope in games
Also, the battle theme in this game 👏S 👏L👏 A 👏P 👏S 👏hard ngl
TLDR : Super Mario RPG fucking rocks
Indeed it does😊
I loved it. I remember playing the original. I loved both of them. Money well spent IMO.
I always wished the paper mario series played more like this. I hope Nintendo makes another Mario RPG in this style.
Right
The NINTENDO RUclipsR that isn't a NINTENDO RUclipsR "wink"
As an owner of the SNES version of the game, I can defiantly say I love this game!
I just started mario rpg last night. I'm not really into that kind of game but I'm having fun so far
Just accept the fact that you are everyone's favorite Nintendo youtuber.
I think keeping it faithful was the right approach personally. Fun times. Good review.
I played the original and just finished the remake. Trust me it is SO MUCH worth playing.
Nintendo has put out more 1st party bangers this year than Microsoft has put out on Xbox in the last two console generations
Charm and personality are far and away SMRPG strongest suits. Thats why its close to so many of our hearts.
Mario Rpg is a classic and one of the top rpgs I’ve played. Fight Culex, the secret boss.
Finally player ? You mean played ? And I agree it has so much charm about it like older Zelda games compared to the modern ones
@@Ihatevideogames334 keep taking the meds dude 👍
I've been a subscriber for about 4 years now, and my opinion you're most definitely are a Nintendo youtuber.

My favorite Super Nintendo game, I’m happy you’re enjoying it. I love some of the new changes in the game. For example you can carry over 999 coins.
@@Ihatevideogames334. you hate having sex with women
It 9999 coins
Glad to see the return of RPG85, I didn't play the original either but I will for sure get this.
i’m not an RPG guy but i totally get why it’s better than Wonder to you. the humor, visuals, characters, charm and such are great.
Ah yes, "i finally player" indeed
As someone who hasn’t played the original and was toying with buying between this and wonder this review was really helpful 👍
I'm super impressed with it. I has it on the SNES back in the day, but didn't remember it too well.
Great job on it. Glad you enjoy it...✌️
I haven’t played the game in decades, and I’m pretty sure I still remember every trick in the game!
If this game wasn't a mario game made by nintendo this wouldn't get more than a 6 out of 10
Duh
You’re Nintendo RUclipsr, but you’re Nintendo Dog, you’re following every Nintendo fart
Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite games of all time. I had to jump on this once I found out they were releasing it
I was a sega kid, too, so i never got a chance to play this game either back then.
This 💯
May I recommend another simple, short experience like this with depth and replay value?

Ah. So he wasn't kidding about not being a Nintendo RUclipsr, I see. Any Nintendo nerd would know that that price drops _never_ happen
Make sure lock your door tonight. You do not want Nintendo come knocking.
I got my copy today at Target for 39.99 before my 5 percent discount so all in all worth it and I missed this one back in the day so glad I’ll get to play it with a new coat of paint
