  • As a doctor training to be a Psychiatrist, most in the field would advise me NOT to post this. But I didn't join this field to continue the status quo. My name is Dr. Jake, I'm a resident physician who treats mental illness, and I take medication for my mental health. And by the way, I'm proud of it.
I posted this on social media in December of 2021 and within 24 hours it had been seen by millions of people around the world. So why did I post this? Watch my first TEDx to hear why I decided to stand up to the establishment and fight stigma and discrimination.

I am part of a new generation of doctors, nurses, and healthcare students and professionals that are NOT afraid to be vulnerable and discuss mental health. WE ARE THE CHANGE. Welcome to my channel fam :)
*** Medications are not for everyone. But they can be a powerful tool in combination with therapy and other self care techniques to improve mental health issues.

Hi Jake, I've got a serious question. If you have family with mental health issues or that are verbally/physically abusive...how can you approach them to help them change/help themselves for the sake of others? Thanks brother!

You are so right about the stigma. We can be the change for the next generation for healthcare workers! 💕 Thank you for sharing your story, Dr. Jake.

I was shocked to hear that this could happen with medical licensure. Really, it shouldn't be allowed in any profession, but in medicine?! Even if it were limited to histories if opiate use disorder in anesthesiologists, i would have a problem with it.

I'm a registered nurse, and I go to therapy and when necessary will take meds for my mental health. I openly talk with my coworkers about my experience with depression that was triggered by working nights in the ICU. I do it fearlessly because I know that more people will find it relatable than not. I do it to help end the stigma. Thank you for fearlessly sharing your experience. ❤

I'm a Pre-Med student with multiple mental illnesses, who has suffered with depression and anxiety and OCD since I was in elementary school. I have been hospitalized, I have been give more that 10 different med combos. And sometimes I ask myself, "who am I to believe I have the capacity to be anything more than who I am now? Let alone be a Neurosurgeon one day."
But screw that. If I'm going to live this life, one I've struggled on and off not to end, I'm going to live it pursuing what makes me actually want to wake up every day.
So this has been an inspiring video. And I encourage everyone to aim hight and achieve your individual greatness, whatever that means to you. 💪😌

Wow this is super emotional for me, I have a mental illness and take medication, and I’m in PA school. Many of my classmates finally started therapy this year and got on medication. We are literally responsible for saving lives and there’s so much pressure to disregard our own!
I never thought I’d get to this point when I was in that low, but I did. Seeing you talk about this is amazing and I’m going to share it with my classmates ❤️

"I didn't join this field to preserve the status quo." My favourite sentence. Medicine will improve thanks to everyone who lives by this motto. Thank you for opening up.
I understood the impact of mental health only during postpartum, but my renowned and extremely sought after ob/gyn didn't even see my struggles or the need for checkups. The stigma is everywhere. People pay the price for devoting their lives to care for other people like patients, children, civilians etc. Why would they not struggle? Why wouldn't they need special support? It can only lead to them doing their job better.

I’m from Malaysia. As a girl from an Asian country, I receive multiple stigma for openly talking about my mental health & about going for therapy. People view me as damaged and would be prudent in talking and interacting with me.
The journey to seek mental health help has been brutal to me and I stopped since last year November. Because, I realise mental health professionals themselves are not entirely mentally healthy. They are burnt out with long working hours and other reasons.
This video really inspires me to find a mental health professional that goes for therapy. Thank you Jake💖
I know it would be hard to find a therapist that goes for therapy and is willing to be honest with patients about it, but all I have to do is to keep trying and keep finding, for the sake of my mental health conditions.
I’m lucid and stable now… so I’m writing this in a positive state of mind. I hope I could still agree with my above statement when I am in super low mood🥺

That’s crazy. I’m a psychiatrist (in Brazil). There is a lot of social pressure to go to therapy once you get into the field. Maybe it’s because we have a lot of influence from psychoanalysis. In fact, the first case you need to treat in mental health is your own…

Damn Dr. Goodman, who's cutting onions? Maybe you're not strong in the way you envisioned as a young guy pursuing your dreams, but this takes quite a bit of courage to admit. To try and break the preconceived notions of what it means to be a doctor and openly relating with your patients to me is another way to be strong.
I'm not a doctor nor am I pursuing a medical career, but my mom is an RN who subjected me to these traditional ideas that being open to how I feel would label me mentally ill and keep me from making a career for myself. She basically aimed me to be focused on school and getting into a career. Because I was only focused on those two things, I didn't have many real friendships, I could never open up, and I spent a lot of my time alone growing up. I worked on a math degree while also working for a research group focused on computer-vision and image processing techniques in real-world applications. It was very stressful for me to finish up during the pandemic because sometimes the lectures weren't enough, so I spent a large amount of my time studying by myself unlike I had before because tutoring sessions weren't an option for me. Maybe it's not the same level of stress, but upon graduation looking back onto my life, I can say I regret not taking any time to really enjoy myself, pursue meaningful interpersonal relationships, and get out of my comfort zone. With the next chapter in my life, that's what I want to do.
Good luck with your practice, Dr. Goodman. I think you are doing a courageous and very good thing here. :)

I had a child with a pretty bad injury a few weeks ago and it really hit my mental health with my anxiety being unbearable for a little while. I remember thinking about the doctors and nurses who were smiling, calm and peaceful as they worked on my child. And as I was freaking out later that night as I processed what had happened, I thought about those medical professionals and marveled at how they could be so calm and kind and wondered how they process the trauma they see every night. I thought to myself, "wow, they must just be so much stronger than I am." But I appreciate this talk for opening my eyes that doctors may do superhuman stuff but they are regular humans just like me. I know how much getting help for my mental health has saved me throughout my life. I want my doctors and nurses to have the same care for their own mental health too! Why wouldn't we want our heroes to be getting that kind of help? We wouldn't look down on a doctor who had a cast on a broken leg.

My sisters is in her 3rd year of medical school. As much as what you are doing is great and I commend you. The pressure is similar to becoming a commercial pilot (what I’m doing). For my sisters sake, she goes to therapy+psychiatrist under a fake name and pays cash. Especially with her looking at becoming a neuro surgeon. Myself, I’ve been raw dogging, besides weekly therapy. It’s rough, mental illness is no joke and if you aren’t in either of these fields I strongly suggest you get meds since a lot of people are in fear of the consequences or getting help. Now I don’t want this to take away from what this video is about. Times are changing. Pilots are slowly being allowed a few meds and doctors like himself taking the courage to risk his license will help continue the progress.

Why isn’t this the standard? My mental health journey inspired my passion for going into psychology, and eventually medical school to pursue psychiatry. I’m being told not to speak about my mental health in residency interviews or on personal statements. Would they say the same to a student with Grave’s disease, who wants to go into endocrine? I’m not so sure.

Hey dude I’ve been a fan for a while and I have a question. Have you ever heard of MCAS ( mast cell activation syndrome) I’m 12 and I’ve had it my entire life. Basically My stress and depression is very high along with my anxiety. I’m also allergic to all fruits and vegetables and I can’t really eat anything without getting sick. Im always in the bathroom and I hate it so much. If you know about it, do you have any recommendations or tips? It’s just a horrible way of living life I’m so done with it.

You might be able to do a Facebook or google search for a support group. I've seen people talking about it in other medical video chats before

Look at that cutie 🥰 I think most patients avoid (old school) docs because they act all condescending or act like they don’t understand mental illness. I have some good pcps here in New York State, I had one who literally immediately said he’d do any paperwork to help me keep my Wellbutrin Rx (name brand). ❤ Honestly I forgot his name but I wish I’d gone more before he moved.

Hi Jake, I've got a serious question. If you have family with mental health issues or that are verbally/physically abusive...how can you approach them to help them change/help themselves for the sake of others? Thanks brother!

They say only crazy people become Psychiatrists. I know if I had the right mentors when I was in school that I would be in Doctors without Borders. I was intimidated that the suicide rate of Doctors was so high. I was afraid I would let down my patients, that I was unreliable. I hope aspiring doctors are getting the right kind of advice now.

I'm an IMG doctor seeking to get residency in the US and I take medications for depression and anxiety. Should I give up this road as I won't be able to get the license?

I have Bipolar 1, but it doesn’t have me! I live in fear everyday that someone finds out.
