Try overseas. Russia and Ukraine used to be really affordable medschool options... the schools now may be in worse shape, but they have even more work for you!
Thank you Dr. Goodman for making this video! I'm in nursing school but this video still applies to me. I had a breakdown last night to my mom but thankfully I'm getting back into a good headspace. Mental health is SO important!!! Keep making videos like this! You are a huge inspiration to so many.
Lawyer who watches medical school oriented videos because I am a heavy user of medical services. Love your comment about med school versus law school. Far better ROI on a medical degree than a law degree. And, in spite of the frequent toxic environment you function in during training, you come out at the end better prepared to practice. Lawyers are just now trying to make a transition to this type of preparatory education. When I went to law school, you weee taught how to think like a lawyer and were expected to learn how to practice law on the job. If you didn’t find a good mentor in your first or second job or locate someone to teach you the ins and outs of practicing, you could potentially have a very difficult time throughout your career. Sad thing is, most lawyers I know, not all but the vast majority of them, hate practicing law. Even successful ones. That doesn’t seem to be true of doctors. I could never have become a doctor. And, though I enjoyed the academic exercise of learning law, I wish I had gone another direction in my education. Best wishes to you as you finish out your education!
Doctor Jake you are a AMAZING doctor and person in life life is hard but we all have to keep going and honestly it’s hard to keep going but your one reason I do Thank you
I was eagerly waiting for my question to be answered. And at 16:14 it finally came.Thank you so much for answering it.I'll definitely convince them patiently and tell them how passionate I am.And if they ask what inspired me to choose psychiatry I'll let them know that it's you sir. What you do is much appreciated. 💗
Hey to your channel! I really appreciate your honest content about medicine. I know what I’m going for isnt as “important” as being a doctor, but I hope by becoming a nurse practitioner, ill be able to make a difference. I contemplated med school for a long time, but as someone with a ton of past trauma, I wanted to save my mental health a bit. I really appreciate doctors and everything they put themselves through so they can save others. Your outlook on the importance of mental health is really inspiring.
Bro I love how you're so open and especially with the question about imposter syndrome, because I only know like one other youtuber in the med field who talks about it...maybe others do,...but yeah...YOU ARE AMAZING!! :)
Hey Dr Jake thanks for the videos man and I'm proud of you for your transparency with mental health I suffer with a fair few of the issues mentally , and it's Refreshing to see a pshychiatric Dr who understands the problems which the patients suffer from, you are amazing never forget that man
Dr Goodman just a thanks from a regular person trying to get through this crazy world! We all have issues, but listening to you , helps us just get help and get on with life...its not so bad!!!
Hello Jake!! I am currently in last semester of my Junior year at high school. At high school I am in the medical class which is anatomy and physiology class. I really wants to become a doctor and that’s my dream. I keep watching your videos and you alway encourage me to accomplish my dream. Thank you so much for your videos!!!!!
Thank you Dr. Goodman. Congratulations!!🎉 My daughter is starting her M2 this Fall. She also wants to be a psychiatrist. Last year she had quite a bit of imposter syndrome, but by the end of the year she was settling in. Thank you for making these videos so I understand more of what she is going through and I can continue being her coach from the sidelines. It’s been quite a journey so far!😅I am going to send her the link to your videos. 😊
Thank you for answering my question and a huge thank you for the message at the end of the video! I kinda had a rough day as it's finals season, that motivated me to keep going and realize that it's all worth it once you graduate. Great video as always! Wish you the best in life
Such a great video Jake! Thank you for making it and for everything you do Jake! I really look up to you so much and thank you for reminding me to never give up on my dream of becoming a doctor!
My child is a high school student and he’s considering medical school. I think it would be worth to make a concise video about the steps to follow. Pre-med, medical school, residence, etc. He has been reading about it and he gets confused about what is what. Also worth to mention that different medical schools have different requirements… Thank you for your videos and your positive attitude! :)
Dr Jake you are amazing. Thank you for being an inspiration for me. So there are so many people who always say that i should go for dental and not for a pulmonologist. They think that i have been getting low grades and will get a low grade too in my final medical entrance exam too. Even i had lost hopes too when i came across one of your shorts video on youtube where u had explained is becoming a dr worth it..and i was so inspired by it that i was like if you can do that i too can🤍so thank u so much for saving me from crushing my childhood dream🤗💓 wishing u all the joy in ur life🥰
Hey Jake, awesome video very inspiring! I see the guitars drums and bass on your wall from going into medical school, when did you have time to practice those instruments - from another musician considering the health field
@@JakeGoodmanMD Wow thank you! I first saw your viral stuff on Instagram and RUclips and I'm glad you're finding fun stuff to do online that can help people.
Becoming a doctor nowadays is becoming harder and harder as compared to decades ago, not just with academics, but cost, lifestyle, competitiveness. Medical school applicants are becoming more and more competitive, its crazy now that you need a top tier MCAT, great GPA, shadowing, research, volunteering, etc. to even be interviewed. Aside of the given fact of ~12 years of dedicating your life to medicine, tuition for medical school is hiking upwards of 200k-300k, not to mention cost of living and interest on all those loans. Residency pay has stayed stagnate at around 60k/yr, and is usually minimum wage once you account for the insane hours worked. Once you finally become an attending you are ruled over by hospital administration and insurance companies, plus attending salaries have become stagnate in recent years. Then if you go the private practice route, you realize its becoming more expensive to do that. On top of still having a quarter million in loans with interest racking up, not many doctors tend to open their own practice, as per the statistics of declining private practices. Becoming a doctor still may be worth it to a lot of people, but i worry in the future that, that life will soon not be desirable to enough people. This could really hurt healthcare later on.
Maybe is just my opinion but I think those stable jobs like doctors and architects couldn't be replaceable by anything today AI will make or coding and design jobs in risk
Hello Dr. Goodman. I don't know if you can answer this question. If not, that's okay. I went to the ER yesterday. During check-in the nurse asked me what year it was, who is the Vice President and where I was. I answered the questions and should have asked why they were asking me these things but I did not. However, today it is really bothering me. Is this something new hospitals are doing? They have never done that before. Also, the hospital never had a guard at the entrance before who had to check your purse and bags and make you walk through a metal detector before you checked in. If you can answer this I would appreciate it. Thank you.
I have a feeling the question from the highschool student could be me, but I'm not sure. It was worded very nice, and I word things pretty weird hajahah.
I disagree that you don't have to compete in med school. I left halfway through due to a serious diagnosis, but people are graded on a curve which is adjusted based on the class's performance. My school (University of New Mexico School of Medicine) was good at booting out first generation students and women who often had obligations outside of medical school.
but what if, my what if is, what if i am a scientist, what if i am a doctor, seems like being doctor alone takes up so much resources..is there any left for other what if, if one chooses to be a doctor..
I am sending the most genuine thanks to you Dr Igudia for saving my life from herpes. Your humility, kindness, and strength are greatly appreciated. A good doctor like you is hard to find, difficult to say goodbye and impossible to forget
Agh the tuition for the med school is INSANNEEE I really hope it changes when I'm ready to apply.
Try overseas. Russia and Ukraine used to be really affordable medschool options... the schools now may be in worse shape, but they have even more work for you!
But if you plan to practice in the us don’t study overseas

It's never too late to become a Doctor! I don't see why you can't be both a Lawyer and a Doctor.
Sounds like you need more experience. Well may suggest buying a newspaper. Sell yourself....there is Medical Law ❤
I’m currently debating medicine vs law 😮
May I email you?
