"She would have loved that joke, and THAT is why she was my friend"
Clearly, she could take a joke, and give equal parts back, understanding how jokes work, and being able to let clear jokes, that are in no way meant to offend, slide. RIP Daphne, the world needs more like you, not less.
nothing but facts I hear
I've heard this story several times and I never ceases to make me emotional. It goes to show that people judge others far too often and harshly without even knowing them. RIP, Daphne.
same my dude, the feels are so real
Myself.
Good riddance*
stop judging and i find peace in understanding..sad story..💔..started understanding why others dont understand..
Never fails to bring a tear to my eyes.
This is honestly one of the sweetest stories I've ever heard. The world needs more people like Daphne and Dave. RIP Daphne.
Indeed, Rest in Peace, Daphne.
Dave Chappelle is not a comedian, he is a philosopher who happens to be funny
You’re thinking of George Carlin
@@tarman2752 oh am I, my bad, I thought I was thinking about Dave Chappelle as I commented this on a Dave Chappelle video. Thank you for your incorrection
I think you mean that Dave is a comedian and also a philosopher. And he is good at both in my opinion
Agreed
…except that he’s not very funny anymore. Now most of his act is about trying to explain and justify things he’s said in the past
This is why Dave doesnt care about offending groups. Because he knows at the end of the day real people understand him and people like Daphne love him for making them feel like a real person
No one should worry about offending people unless they’re going out of their way to do so. At the end of the day, they’re just fucking words. Get over you fucking children.
I've been part of the LGBT for a long time and I never got so mad at my own community until they latched on to one word from this special and didn't bother to understand the context of his message. Every part of the LGBT that bashes Chappelle up to this day over the word "terf" needs to listen to this story and understand why he was upset. This is a rough truth but the LGBT has started to become the very bullies they hated growing up. Its all group think now and if you don't say all the same things and get mad at the same things they do you get hated on and "cancelled" and that shit isn't helping anyone. Remember if you are gay, bi, lesbian, trans, whatever its ok to have to have your own thoughts and individuality. You don't HAVE to latch on to the group and also just by doing your own thing that doesn't mean you have to cling to the opposite side that hates the LGBT either. Remember Americans we all don't really hate each other. We are being conned into hating each other by the very wealthy while they rob us blind and fuck up our country.
Online and on Twitter is an absolute fuckfest. Id gotten to know a few trans folk personally at my old job and it helped me understand them. If I never had that, and I only knew what I’ve seen online, I could very well be a hateful bigot today
They are what they hate. I'd respect them more if the group would call out the bad apples in the community
It's almost like everyone is an individual, with their own thoughts and ideas. Weird.
@@kylereinhold1386 I just did. not all of us, in fact I dare say most of us, don't give a fuck about the group think from the college aged brats.
@@NeutralGloomBot hopefully in time it'll get better
I can hear the anger in Dave’s last joke. There is really no easy way to cope with a friend’s suicide.
R.I.P Daphne goes to show that at the end of the day, it's not about how much you entertain an audience, it's about how much people connect to you as a person in this life and you only need that a few times to call it a day.
Absolutely, my friend!!!
He's right. Social media isn't a real place. What people are doing, it isn't really making a difference. It isn't really maintaining relationships. Its giving people the illusion that they are. It gives people the fantasy that they are actually producing or contributing something to the world, when in reality, they are just sitting on the couch getting potato chip grease on their keyboard
it's actually worst. what people are doing are just boasting ther hyper-narcissism, thinking themselves to be relevant if they go viral and get a lot of hype/RT/followes etc.
the idea of "making a difference" is just the virtous lie they tell themself to justify the online crusades, while in reality the real motivation is self-satisfaction
Yet they bear enough weight to tip the scale of making someone commit suicide. Is it actually not real? Who or what should be held accountable for social media becoming what it is? It's absurd to think a place that is "not real" is capable of destroying peoples' lives like that.
@@glaucogomes1116 I don't disagree, but one possible counter point may be that we don't hear too much about the times having a wider social group may have been what talked someone down from the ledge. I hope that at least, but with the rise /ease of trolling, hatred, toxicity.. I'm guessing it's just going to get worse.
There's an 'experiment' of sorts happening with social media. Moreso maybe in the younger age groups, but lower self-esteem among girls, increased rated of self-harm, a constant connection to the places refreshing a page to see like 'likes', the tiktok / shorts mentality etc. There has been a couple of good studies and books about it, but we're still in the early years.
@@glaucogomes1116 Yes and I’m saying that is an illusion. All of those individuals are lying to themselves that they’ve actually contributed anything to the advancement of transgender people. I’ll tell u what, try this out. If you visit your parents twice a year, replace your visits with “likes” on on social media lol. Report back and tell me if they felt the same way about it. And going to guess that they won’t. Why? Because liking shit on social media isn’t actually doing anything.
@@glaucogomes1116 No…it’s not real. How many people end their lives over internet comments? And Dave admitted himself that he doesn’t know what cause her to do that…”but I’m sure getting dragged like that didn’t help”. We are all fully aware that the majority of people who talk recklessly online won’t have the same energy with the people they’re talking to, or about if they were face to face with those people. How “real” is that?
I might be the only Trans woman who openly loves and celebrates Dave Chapelle. Trans jokes are hilarious because I can relate to them. And see a source of identity through the art of comedy. Fuck these people that think they’re speaking for our best interests. This is hilarious and heartfelt.
You seem like an awesome person.
Just know you're not alone, a number of trans people i've known appreciate trans humor and Dave Chappelle. Everyone else in this world gets joked about, its part of being a part of humanity. You're part of us, you deserve to get jokes to.
You're still a man.
If stand up comedians are making jokes about any group, it's a sign of acceptance by the general community and it really sucks that you clearly get that but so many dont. This bit comes from love, not hatred
You're not special.
All the shit the Trans community gives Dave, and when it comes down to it, he is better to their people than they are. It really shows the value of taking a moment to understand someone before you pass judgment.
Well, it is kinda because of all the shit the trans community recieves. And unfortunately, some of daves actions have given fuel to people who have given the trans community shit. He didnt intend to, but he cant control his audience. And the audience is dumb as fucking shit.
RIP Daphne. I pray you found love & acceptance wherever you are.
Daphne was right about Dave Chappelle, he is a master of his craft!!! I've been watching Dave Chappelle comedy since he started and I got hooked when he had his show that I used to watch everyday Saturday night in Comedy central. But just like the great comedians he got better and better as time went by. Like many comedians, Dave Chappelle tells jokes by making fun of everyday situations, which is known as observational comedy, but he makes it real funny and his punch lines never fail and carry a big weight. He is amazing. This guy is a legend on his own time and I bet he will make us laugh hard for many many more years to come. My prayers go to Daphne and may she rest in peace. 🙏😔😔😔
You cut off the part where Dave was gonna meet her child when they turned 21. To paraphrase roughly, "I knew your father, he was a wonderful woman."
The best quote ever. It recognises what Daphne was before without taking away a father figure in her daughter's life and respecting what Daphne turned into for her to live her life the way it was intended. I remember catilyn Jenner also said her children can call her dad.
Dave has always made me laugh. Tonight, he made me cry. RIP Daphne
How in the hell can Dave tell this story without being emotional or even a voice crack. Truly an amazing artist.
Oh it cracked. It was subtle but the emotion was there.
@@Lilmew0015 that and I definitely heard some resentment in his voice.
Cause its probably not true lol y'all gullible as hell if y'all believe a comedian every time he says "this is a true story" lol
@@ohh2752 nice try you failure of a human being.
@@ohh2752 you believe people when they tell you to hate someone instead of looking at the whole context?
Much respect Dave, to really honor the death of a friend like you just did!
Comedians 100 years into the future will look back at this man and know he’s the GOAT. no one tells a story or puts things across in the way he does. He’s brilliant. 👍👍
The king of comedy
I was too young to appreciate George Carlin back in the day... all I can do is appreciate his old material. Now I'm happy to have the opportunity to watch Dave - the man is a genius... and even a better storyteller than George.
Better storyteller - Norm Macdonald , GOAT - George Carlin.
no one will ever be as good as George Carlin but Bill Burr is getting there, and Dave isn't far behind.
Richard Pryor, man was a born comedian, a natural, the Goat all round...Keeping shit real.
RIP DAPHNE!! It's NOT easy being "HUMAN" anymore. I give a moment of silence 4 DAPHNE! As "ROBIN WILLIAMS" once stated, "BE kind to others. You don't know what they've been through."
Dave Chappelle is the only comedian to this day to make me experience great laughter and great sadness together almost at the same time. . . . His love for humanity and people’s differences is unmistakable. “DownPunchers” are just plain a-holes
Poor Daphne……How sad. The hardest thing a person can be is courageous and……being courageous……alone.
8:45 was VERY powerful... brought tears and chills...
I think this is why comedy is so important. In one line you can shed light on the ridiculous expectations of society, the ridiculous demands of one persons path and then bring everyone back together, reminding us why we are not so different after all.
To silence language artists like this is to do all of us a disservice.
I did not watch the special and I have heard about her several times but this is the 1st time I had heard that she committed suicide....That just breaks my heart....But the way he responded and the way he treated her and remembers her is no shock to me......He is a man with class, standards and honor......We need more people like Dave in this world
The world needs more Daphnes and Chappels in it.
I don’t always like what this guy has to say but it’s always the truth.
I respect and admire him.
Cheers…
From South Africa
The world needs more people like you people who can understand that just because something has their feelings doesn't mean it isn't true you sound like you're an amazing person
RIP Daphné; you were a beautiful soul
The worst part of this whole thing is that we'll never get to see Daphne when she finally got good at comedy and earned her own 'Dave Chapelle presents' special somewhere.
The story sadly never comes around full circle.
The horrible, grim, and unfair reality of suicide is that, in the process of putting a permanent end to the things that trouble you, there is also the loss of any and all potential you had in your bones. We're all fully CAPABLE of greatness, be it as a comedian or a musician or whatever in the fuck. But this world sees fit - especially in society - to stunt that potential in any way possible. To dehumanize anyone that looks, thinks or acts differently than we do, instead of lending to others a small semblance of grace that may be the nudge they need to seek "win" that potential over.
Some of us lose the battle, but sometimes the ones that lose get immortalized for it. I don't think Dave is ever going to let her live down stealing the show from him that night. It must've been a sight.
Thanks for sharing Daphne’s story with us. I get emotional every single time.
This is probably my favorite story from him. It never fails to get me emotional
You have a true friend in somebody when they will back you up against others when your not there.
I got bullied plenty in middle school over dumb dave chappelle jokes, but it really did teach me, you cant be mad at me for trying to lighten things up. I dont knoe if i will ever be part of any society, but it makes me happy even in the worst of times to be able to laugh at myself. Dave you will always be the goat
Dave has an excellent way to articulate his thoughts and jokes.
This was probably the most powerful stand up act I've ever heard. Just wow.
“I knew your father. And he was a wonderful woman”
The end of that story is so good.
Wow….that was both heart warming and funny. Dave Chappelle is a master of his craft.
Social media is toxic as hell. RIP Daphne.❤
So NOW the full story comes out. Just wow. Dave is literally so straight up the man to not be scared to tell the truth.
That was respect, Dave, and that is how it should be from both sides. It’s great example of how great ideas are learned even when everyone is laughing.
This will always remain a beautiful story……I love the final words about daphne in the full vid it’s a beautiful send off
Dave Chappelle is on a whole different level. I've always thought he was one of the funniest people alive. I never knew he could make me laugh histaricly, and touch my heart so deeply that o cried
I love how he teaches us life lessons while make them funny at the same time.
Dave Chappelle is really one of the greatest writers of satire. The man is brilliant.
When you refer to yourself as the GOAT, and everyone agrees❤
FACTS 🤣🤣🤣
- Hitler
Well, it WAS his show. So whose fans would be there? Why, Dave's of course!
Not everyone. He’s good, used to be a lot better, but the GOAT is still either Richard Pryor or George Carlin (take your pick)
@@gregbors8364 There are no GOATS; It's whoever is at the hottest part of their career at the time. We've seen it with Cosby, Pryor, Murphy, Louis CK, and many others. My dad had seen Buddy Hackett, Rodney Dangerfield, Morey Amsterdam, Redd Foxx, and so many more from the 1950's and earlier, and more live back in their vaudeville days when they could tell all the off color jokes and how funny they were.
We're lucky that so much is available in recorded media. Check out some of the audio only stuff released on records back in the 40's, 50's and 60's which weren't censored. It's incredible. Lots are on youtube.
I truly never have understood how people ever thought Dave was transphobic. It's like did you ever really listen to him? In sticks and stones he came across as very supportive if you ask me. He also possesses a keen insight into the LGBT community likely because he has so many from that community that love him and are friends with him.
He understood that the different groups under the banner have their own challenges and goals which seems common knowledge when you hear it but I don't think anyone outside the LGBT bubble ever once considered that progress for one doesn't always mean progress for all. With transgenderism being relatively new to the public spotlight and the country's divided views on all things I think trans people probably have had it the hardest in the recent past. Lots of stories of violence surrounding that, even heard there's a trans gang essentially since no one else will fuck with them (meaning they only have each other, no friends or family that accept them)
You made the mistake to think that those people try to listen to you. They don‘t listen to understand you, they listen to be offended by you because they are extremely self-centered
@@Oliver-2103
I never said trans people listen to others I was talking about Dave not being transphobic. He had never given me the impression that he ever hated anyone for something as trivial as gender or sexuality
@@Oliver-2103
Kinda ironic looking back on this considering you said I made the mistake thinking that those people listen when you totally missed what I was saying. Oh that made my day
I don’t usually play that game but I will say Rest In Peace Daphne your spirit is missed by people who didn’t know you and don’t always agree. I wish you nothing but greatness in the afterlife
Chappell is this generations Carlin.
Absolutely
Not at all. Carlin always punched up, not down. Carlin would never have paraded a plutocrat like Elon Musk on his stage, for instance
He might even "eclipse" the "Hippy, Dippy, Weatherman."
@@gregbors8364 absolutely! My comedic hero's like Dave and Ricky Gervais unfortunately get "boomer" when they age. Humour turns into "I understand the youth these days". George Carlin was always fuck the system! Rage against the machine style.
No. Chappelle Is Chappelle

Never take a community of people seriously if they are willing to instantly turn on their own for having a differing opinion.
So humans... That's all people do since the beginning of time. That's all we ever will do until there's none of us left. The last human will have become the last human by betraying the second to last human.
My feelings toward Daphne are encapsulated in a quote by the very person Dave was defending here in "The Closer": ""It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."
That's a Dumbledore quote 😂
@@widexawake_ But Chapelle did defend Rowling in this special, and, as she wrote Dumbledore, it could be called a "Rowling Quote", one she just put in Dumbledore's mouth
@@LangThoughts That is what we call semantics. You COULD argue, that it is/was a Rowling quote because she is the author and therefore she IS the voice of these characters, but you could also argue that she "isn't" Dumbledore, she's only bridging the gap and scribing "his" words for us to read. Both arguments have merit, and neither is completely correct nor false. Although, I lean more towards it being Dumbledore's quote because he "said" it.
@@widexawake_ That's some real mental gymnastics right there. Dumbledore doesn't exist, Rowling does.

Very magnanimous of you to encourage her. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. I know your belief in her meant a lot to her Dave.
I have to admit I judged Dave Chappelle without knowing anything about him. I just took it for granted that he must be a hate-filled person because I heard he was transphobic. Then I stumbled across this act. I don't know much about him, but based on this I find it hard to believe that he hates people who are trans. Perhaps we need to be a little slower to write people off because big groups of people get together on the internet and decide that they are bad. I have a nasty feeling that a lot of these folks didn't know any more about Dave than I did.
most poeple that hate on Dave have never heard his routine and if they have never, they have never listened to the full story they take a line or two and get outraged
Welcome to the big lie; Capitalist propaganda; misdirection.

One of the greatest story tellers of all time
Dave Chapelle is the GOAT. His job is to make us laugh at ourselves and him too. I have watched his routine as far back as his first tv appearance on Letterman. I have always thought of him as a kind, funny goofball who can be very serious when he has to be. I doubt if he has a hateful bone in his body. Most of his comedy points out the obvious things that make others uncomfortable to talk about.
Funniest man I have ever known looked a lot like Dave Chappelle. His name is Joe. We worked night shift together at a warehouse for 3 years together. We would take lunch at 2am. The breakroom was his stage. The 8 of us became very good friends. Joe knew just when he had you gasping for air from laughter how to really pour more gas on the fire. We used to beg him to stop. For 3 years my Abdominal muscles hurt. Joe could go clean and wholesome, or he gould get down and dirty. It was like his sole purpose in life was to make people laugh until they couldn't breathe. He had us all on the ropes one night talking about fishing, we were all begging for him to stop so we could catch our breath when he said the fish was so big that the picture weighed 5 lbs.......That one sent us all over the edge. Joe made drinks shoot out of peoples noses on a regular basis. Now he is a Deputy Sheriff and has even more comedic ammunition.
What an absolute beautiful human being is Dave.
This society is way too cruel; rip Daphne….you were beautiful and the world couldn’t see it
The fact the world attacked this Daphne , brought her so low in hate to make self delete her only escape is just awful. I suppose it’s fitting he uses it for a joke so she can live on having the last laugh on those who attacked her. The fact that defending a friend could cause that level of hate is absolutely sick. This is a twisted world and that’s no joke there. I hope all those twisted people reap what they sow and we all have a good laugh when they fall. True people are needed more than ever , we need not one twitter outrage warrior.
My God hardwood floors!!! That killed me

I hate stand-up but I confess that this is genius. It takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. So, yes the punchline is a killer and It makes me wish I was there.
This was both hilarious and touchingly human.
People, we never know what someone is going through. A high school girl just committed suicide after being beaten and bullied in school, which was recorded and put up on social media where more people bullied her. Are we too selfish to be able to be empathetic?
i love this man, he's so awesomely funny
That was AMAZING. Even the GOAT doesn't ring the bell every time, but he rang the living fuck out of it with that bit.
And the people that bullied her into that position that she’d kill herself will still sleep fine at night while saying that they’re the tolerant ones and the good guys, fucking sickening.

Wow, I wish I had known her. She seemed like a heck of a person. I wish she hadn't suffered till to the point of tragedy. I mean she seriously seemed like a cool person from his description. It's cool that she still gets to speak through Dave Chappelle. I'm sure millions have heard of her.
Dave, I watched this and laughed till I cried then cried at the end till I laughed. So sorry you lost a good friend that way.
That hit me like a damn truck...
There was Red Fox, Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy! They are in a class all by themselves! I'm a 60-year-old white dude and I don't mention these black comedians because they are black but because they are and were the best! These are the guys I grew up listening to! Now days for me it's Dave and Bill Burr! I can relate to Bill because I pretty much have the same deminer. I have very little patients waiting in line. Waiters work in restaurants and patients are in hospitals. And I can only take stupid for a few seconds! But Dave Chappelle is on a level all by his self! He is not only very, very funny, be he is a storyteller. He just told a story of a transgender person (which I will never understand) who committed suicide and made it funny. Not funny because they committed suicide but because as a story in its entirety was pretty funny, sad but funny. And pretty much everything he says is right and true. Like Daphne said he doesn't punch down he is just being funny. And we should all learn something from that! Between Dave and Bill, I'm understanding the trans thing a little better. I mean you've got to understand with my generation, this thing snuck up on us we weren't ready for all this! LOL! That's a brand-new concept it takes a 60-year-old man a while to get his brain wrapped around! You're like wait what? What did they do? No! Are you sure? Stay lite, stay funny and try to be understanding!
I just ordered Bevery Hills Cop 1 and 2 and Coming to America DVD's.
Damn, I wasn't expecting that...
