Zach Edey Has More NBA Potential Than You Think | 2024 NBA Draft Scouting Report

- Zach Edey, for the past two seasons, has been the most dominant player in college basketball. Recently being named the 2 time Naismith player of the year, which has only been done two other times in history, Edey has an individual college resume that stacks up well with anyone in at least the past 20 years. However, he has always been perceived as the type of player that does well in college, but won’t translate to the NBA. Last year, after his first college player of the year season, he tested out the NBA waters and found that his draft stock was somewhere in the mid 2nd, to not being drafted at all. This led him back to Purdue for one more year, but after this year, things seem to be changing. Most mock drafts have Edey going early 2nd at the latest, with some even going as far as putting him first round or even borderline lottery. So what has changed? Edey hasn’t significantly shifted his playing style, as he still is the same huge back to the basket big man he always was for the most part. Scouts have clearly been encouraged by something in his game however, so today, we are going to break down his game, the positives, the negatives, and finally, how I see him translating to the NBA, and if scouts truly are correct to upgrade Edey on their draft boards over last season.

Biggest thing about Edey is that he hasn't been playing a long time, a few years in HS and 4 years in college. there is still a lot of ceiling for him to reach to. If he shows he can have a jump shot, even if not behind the arc, and as he said in an interview that he has more burst than it showed in college b/c he had to conserve energy to play 30+ mins a game, he might end up being quite a good nba player.
He be badass if he developed a mid range
His interior low post game is dictated by Purdue's offensive strategy and why he plays the ENTIRE game there. However look at the way he moves for a 7'4. People say he's flat footed but he does not move slow and several times in the tournament he covered guards from the perimeter and their drives into the paint swatting them easily. The only times he got into trouble is when he commits and leaves his feet guarding the 3. His low-post game is near top-notch so its a great base from which to add to his offensive game. His shooting mechanics are good and that means he can easily add a mid-range game. Add to the fact that the NBA-level guards will be able to run the pickNroll properly and dish the ball into the paint with better skill. Add to his work ethic and his trainability. Think about where he's at after only 7 years of BBall. He really is a man amongst boys. I would be VERY surprised he does not go in the top half of the 1st round. Is there really a difference-maker in the forward-center position who can turn around a bottom of the barrel NBA team? I think the only one in this draft worth banking on is Edey especially after seeing him dominate Clingan playing 38 minutes against a run-crazy Uconn O.
I think too many people perceive his game as having too many holes for him to go in the top half of the 1st. That being said, I see him going late first and potentially being considered a steal for where he was drafted a few years down the line. I think the things people are concerned about aren’t as bad as some people think
He will be a lottery pick and there is no doubt about it

Every other team should consider Edey specifically to attempt to guard Wemby.

@@themallonee No way Edey can guard Wemby. Wemby is too fast for him. Wembly has all sort of moves around him and does not need to muscle inside. Wembly can draw him out to the three point line. Edey will be cooked whether he follows out or not.
Would be a perfect fit for the Sixers, can come in to play backup C for Embiid and help Edey ease into NBA basketball and could possibly start on Embiid off days. Normally it takes longer for Big man to come into the league and adjust to the speed and pace without fouling out quickly. Edey is projected right around where the Sixers will be picking at 16 too.

Oh I 100% believe he is capable. Still not exceptional but his improvement has been very encouraging
Why doesn't the NBA change just it's ruling on the Defensive Three-Second Rule? Eliminating this rule would allow teams to play a traditional zone defense a la in NCAA and International Play. NBA players can therefore be in the key for more than three seconds and defenders can be positioned in specific areas for longer periods. Teams can now execute more strategies and adapt defensive schemes to the players and talent they have. Players like Zach Edey would flourish. Problem solved. This would also help offenses become more dynamic too, especially at the end of games. I am starting to get sick of watching the same two players on offense run the pick in roll while everybody else watches and stands around. Can't imagine what the NFL would look like if they banned zone defenses there.
I agree. I think the three second rule should be gone on both defense and offense tbh but that’s just me

The Pacers could've used him tonight. They went into double overtime against the Bucks after having a commanding lead when their 3pt shooting dried up in the 4th. They had zero post game. I would love to see bigs in the post again. The league needs something to happen.
To be fair, the Pacers did pull out the win. That being said I do think it would be nice to have a true big to back up Myles. Jalen Smith really is more of a 4 and Isaiah Jackson is closer but still a bit undersized as a 5. Edey coming in as a rim protector in certain situations would really be great for them imo
@@hoophierarchy Don't see Edey as a fit with a team that plays as fast as the Pacers, that being said I think he definitely can play in the league. His endurance and general movemnt is really fucking impressive for a guy that large.
@@kKlovn Valid point about the Pacers transition game. He'd have to be much more situational for the Pacers. His fit would 100% be better on a more slow paced squad.
He’s gonna be the best player in this draft. Especially if he goes to a team like Atlanta that has a PG that can get him the ball in the post or on pick and roll. Jokic and Embiid are traditional bigs and perennial MVP’s. So saying the league is going to smaller bigs or stretch 5’s is not accurate. He should be a starter, you can come off the bench with the smaller lineup when you want to speed up the game, not bring him off the bench. He wouldn’t work around less talented 2nd team players.
I love ppl talk about the new NBA basically the 5 out? I think if you have a good defensive forward teamed with Edey, it could work. Think of two 7 footers that can dominate 1on1 near the basket. There will be no help on defense. Or if they do double, you have an open 3 somewhere. Sometimes, instead of following everyone else, you need to do something different better than anyone else
Him next to Anthony Davis would be perfect. He’ll provide much needed O Rebounding and play the 5 with AD coming in to help. If teams go small we have AD and Hayes/Lebron/Vando. With AD being legit on the mid range and Dlo/reaves it won’t clog up the floor. Lebron at the dunker spot or off cuts. Occasionally at 3pt for catch and shoot since we have a better chance at the offensive rebound.
Pacers fan here. I think Zach would be a great compliment to Myles. Talk about a stacked roster. Fans here would love to see a Purdue guy succeed down in Indy. And if you could get him for a late 2nd…why wouldn’t you take that chance? You know that guy is going to work and work and work to contribute to the team.

Pacers try to play extremely fast, I think Edey is a tad too slow for that.
What I've learned from years of watching these draft videos is...NOBODY KNOWS SH*T UNTIL THESE PLAYERS PLAY THEIR CAREERS.
i always felt a player can show potential but you don't know how good someone is until they get into the league because college ball is way different than pros

You guys wanna draft a backup big for your first pick? Because there will be better players on the board and you are drafting a guy who will not get a start over Nikola Jovic or Bam Adebayo. He ain't good enough for that much. You can get size later in the draft, you don't need to go 1st round for a guy who is gonna be a bench rider all year when all he really gives you is size, no shooting, questionable defense, average passer.
I think it works if Bam gets his shooting up to a Draymond green type level. Then you run Bam at the 4 and let Edey run the 5 in a Andrew Bogut/Kevon Looney type role but with a better skill set and a taller build. You would still switch between Jaquez and Jimmy at the 3 and Jovic still learns his role at the 3 and 4.
I'd be surprised if he doesn't go in the lottery. Funny how people point out he has limited upside when I think he has more upside than anyone else in this draft. The upside being you can potentially get a 7'3.25" giant who can play competent defense while being skilled enough offensively that no one could guard him. It's actually weird how he's perceived. I mean Jokic is slower and shorter yet he get's no grief over his lack of defense. Another comparison would be Yao Ming

I could see that. I might be mistaken but I remember hearing from somewhere that AD plays a lot better when he’s not playing center. Having Edey would be very interesting

Going to be a solid back-up Center, like 10-12 mins per game should be his potential.
Can see him going between 25-30. As you said think he would be a solid bench option when you want a big body

Everything sums up to if he can defend the pick and roll. If so, hell have a long career in the NBA.
Edey's court vision and passing are suspect, despite what was said about his playmaking in this video. He could be absolutely dominant with those skills, but he doesn't have them yet.

I think with a lot of highly skilled , great college players - The situation and opportunity often are whats important & can make or break you.
If Edey gets a real opportunity to play he'll succeed. If a team simply doesnt play him because he doesnt fit the current trending style players , or because hes not an athletic specimen - he may rather unfairly be out of the NBA very quickly.
The way teams draft now its almost ALL based on youth + athleticism.
Teams will draft a guy who averaged 3 ppg and 3 rpg as long as he can jump out the gym , over a decorated , accomplished 4 year college player who you know you can count on.
Its like getting obsessed with gambling. A player thats rather well developed you kinda know what you're getting - and to GM's i guess thats not exciting. So they'll take a raw freshman player who didnt achieve anything hoping they can turn him into a home run.
I personally dont think its very smart team building technique. Like i said , its the high from the rush of gambling these GMs like. They wanna hit a home run & be looked at like a genius.
If I were drafting - Id be drafting for roles and fit. Id be drafting guys I know can help with my teams weaknesses. Gamble with your 2nd round picks - or even undrafted FA
There are only 2 teams I wanna see him on. Either have the Nuggets take him so nobody else can get him because frame wise he is the only player outside of Embiid who can physically stop him getting to his spots. So you would be taking him purely just to make sure if he pans out nobody can use him against you.
The other would be Minnesota mainly to help with joker. Luka Garza is too small to guard Joker which makes him kind of useless in the post season. I look at it kind of like a moneyball situation. You don't need Edey to be a superstar, you just need him to be better than Garza. If he can do that it's a great pick because just look at game 7. ANT had to sit for most of the 4th because he was on 5 fouls and Rudy fouled out. If that game went to OT and they got CAT to foul out they would have been screwed. If all Edey does is come in for 3-4mins a quarter playing 9-12mins means he can commit some hard fouls on joker and not be too concerned with fouling out and if down the stretch CAT or Rudy or both get fouled out you have someone big enough as back up. I know you have Reid, but you always have to consider injuries in the post season. Garza just doesn't help you so to get a guy that is not only 7 inches taller but 60p heavier will be an upgrade even if they are equally talented. If Edey is more skilled then Garza it's just an added bonus
Miami Heat draft Zach Edey or Devin Carter and in the 2nd Justin Edwards. Heat need size in order to win a championship. Edey and Bam would make the Heat unstoppable.

He is way better than yao in terms of neuromuscular ability and of imposing himself on offense also yao shot mid range without moving or posting up defenders, this guy pushes people until he gets close in shots he wants you dont notice how powerful he is (extra muscled in the legs) because he dont push until he dunks like shaq but the shots he settles for those are repaetable and hitable at %70 any leauge. On defense Yao was slow to react when guarding 1v1 i dont mean he moved slow he reacted slow an obvious result of his giantism, C. Boozer which is a shit player took advantage of YAo to eliminate the rockets for the jazz. This giant reacts quick, and no he dont need to run around or be athletic on Nba look at Nurkic jokic or valencunas, oh and do you realize he as tall as wemby this is a totally new classification called supergiant.
The comparison to BOban is laughable just for starters he dont have the abnormal growth on his face boban has. i would pick him 1st and i would not blink unless Jordan (23) is in there too
dude his ceiling is boban. all the good 7 footers leave college after freshman year. he is too slow. period
