Happy New Year sumo fans! Thank you so much for joining us on SUMO PRIME TIME. We’re only about a week away until the New Year’s Sumo Tournament gets underway in Tokyo’s Kokugikan arena, the home of sumo. This time, all eyes will be on Ozeki Kirishima who won his second title in November and will be gunning for promotion to the top rank of Yokozuna. Recently, we were able to conduct an exclusive interview with Kirishima. He seemed confident and was looking forward to the challenge. We hope you enjoy the show, as the 27-year-old Ozeki shares his thoughts on the upcoming contest and his aspirations of reaching Yokozuna.
All I can do is SCRRRRRRRRRRREAM!!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH--I LOVE KIRISHIMAAAAAAAAAA!!!! AAAAAAAAAAH!!! YOU GO BOIIIMAY YOUR 2024 YOKOZUNA WISHES COME TRUE! I'M ROOTING FOR YOU-from afar
I hope all of Kirishima's wishes for 2024 come true. Thanks for such a fun interview. It's so good to see that the rikishi have a sense of humor as well as an iron spirit of dedication to sumo.
There's so many interesting stories coming in this tournament! Kirishimas way to Yokozuna, Kotonowakas fight for Ozeki, how will Atamifuji stand up as a Maegashira 1? Onosatos debut in the top division, Hakuohos comeback and so much more! I'm really looking forward to this one!
@@andrepaiva6654 he is makushita 5. They only fight 7 bouts in that rank so he will need at least a 6-1 record to advance to the Juryo division i would guess.
There's a lot interesting wrestlers this year to watch out for. I'm hoping by end of 2024 we will see a lot of movement of wrestlers going up. I'm predicting atamifuji will at least reach sekiwake or better still enter ozeki. Hoshuryu and takakesho will be next gunning for yokozuna and kotonowaka entering ozeki. Hakuoho entering sekiwake or better still ozeki. That's my crystal ball predictions! 😂
Thank you for the recent interviews with the rikishi. It's great getting to see them talk in a relaxed setting. Please consider interviewing Hokutofuji or Midorifuji!
I'd like to thank Japan Sumo Association and Sumo Prime Time for making this wonderful discipline accessible to a worldwide audience 💖 🌟Kudos and fingers crossed 🤞 for Kirishima and his dreams
I've been rooting for him for a long time, I always felt like he wasnt talked about as much as a lot of other wrestlers in the past, its nice to see him make it so far.
Same. With so many others being hyped over the last couple eyars, I barely noticed Kirishima (then Kiribayama) just consistently beating everyone and moving up the ranks.
I've never been more excited about a tournament than I am now, leading up to the January tournament - I'm really looking forward to it. There's a lot to be decided - Kirishima's promotion to the rank of yokozuna, the high expectations for Asanoyama's performance, Kotonawaka's promotion, newcomer Onosato and the others also. Wow - what amazing days are ahead of us!
My prayers have been with Japan since the New Year earthquake. Hoping the families of any of the athletes in that stricken area are OK. I, too, am looking forward to this coming tournament. This was a great interview. Thank you.
I hope he can do it and become a dominant Yokozuna, best of luck to Kirishima! Also this channel has never interviewed the current yokozuna Terunofuji, he's my favourite Rikishi I would love to hear what he has to say about his career and so on. Thanks for all the videos Sumo prime time!
I hope he beats Terunofuji in the last match of the basho, thus securing the yusho and his promotion to Yokozuna... throw in some special prizes for Onosato, Atamifuji, and Ura, and it will be a perfect basho for me....
Stop beating my man Daieisho. All jokes aside, Kirishima is a force and I think he can be a Yokozuna. He can fight going forward or backwards, he has belt work and has a razor focus.
Thank you, Hiro, for the interview with Kirishima Zeki! Sounds good! I feel he really can reach Yokozuna this year. One day at a time. One match at a time. Belief in yourself and practice/keiko! Gambattekudasai!
All eyes will be on him but only one of mine. Both of them will be on Ura and Kotonowaka. I hope the one gets kachikoshi and the other gets promoted. And I pray that nobody, nobody, gets injured in this tournament. Never seen that happen but it's something to hope for.
Thanks for interviewing Kirishima. Hope he makes Yokozuna this year. Looks like he's wearing Pantone's 2024 color of the year, Peach Fuzz. Lol, I hope it brings him good luck.
YOKOZUNA means KIRISHIMA GO GO GO!!! I love see'n him speak and wright English (thanks for this post Hiro-san) & rather he speaks or writes English or not, I'M ROOTING FOR HIM ALLLLLL THE WAAAY!!! I liked him BEFORE he was Ozeki-"TACHI-AI!!!" Kick ARS Kirishima!!! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Kirishima will be my Yokozuna. I would hope he is a good soul towards the spirit of Yokozuna. He is a fine gentleman, a very kind person, and the most respectful man. I would hope he comes to Texas one day, we could ride our Texas stallions, and I could teach him the proper way to ride and be thrown off a bull. Quite the challenge. My best wishes upon this new year.
Sorry to burst your bubble, Tex, but he's Mongolian, you won't be teaching him diddly squat about riding. Those guys learn to ride before they learn to walk.
Great interview as always, Hiro san. So Kirishima may be promoted to Yokozuna if he wins the Jan tournament or even if he gets 10+ wins without winning the basho? Anyway, he has 6 chances this year and it seems very doable! Let's see how Takakeisho, Hoshoryu and Kotonowaka do this year. Maybe two new Yokozunas this year?
Not quite so easy I'm afraid. He needs a win or at least a strong runner-up (think 14-1) performance now, if he doesn't get it it's back to square 1 because the criteria is two consecutive yusho. (If it weren't, Takakeisho would long since be a Yoko with his four cups...)
Teru beat Kotonowaka and Kirishima lost to Kotonowaka. The odds are with Teru winning day 15. Kirishima will try to trip Teru's leg or ankle. So Terunoffugi should win by frontal push out or an under arm throw. Good luck Teru!
Question: Wikipedia describes Kirishima Tetsuo (of sumo fame) and Ryunosuke Haga (of judo fame) as friends, but that description appears to reference two animated characters, rather than real-life human beings. Are the characters named in honor of the people? Are the given names and/or family names very common in Japan, or did someone create an alternative universe while I wasn't looking? (I'm equally fine with all those options. I just want to be less confused.) Have two humans ever even met? Wikipedia often lives down to its reputation for being unreliable, but now they're taking it a bit too far.

I love Kirishima. I hope he accomplishes his goal of becoming Yokozuna!
It would be interesting if Hiro shared more of his history as a Sumo sportscaster.
I hope all of Kirishima's wishes for 2024 come true. Thanks for such a fun interview. It's so good to see that the rikishi have a sense of humor as well as an iron spirit of dedication to sumo.
You can tell he's trying and how cheerful he is despite being calm. Go Kirishima!!!
As an American fan I can really appreciate the effort to try to learn and speak English. Though the Japanese language is still amazing to hear!

We really need sumo on a channel in America.
I've not been this pumped for a tournament for a long time!

Ganbare Kirishima!
Kirishima bout to morph into his final form, power levels over 9000! Let's go!
Stop beating my man Daieisho. All jokes aside, Kirishima is a force and I think he can be a Yokozuna. He can fight going forward or backwards, he has belt work and has a razor focus.

I am so glad this channel came into existence. I wish there were a way to directly financially support it other than through RUclips.
This channel has to get more popular soon the content is too awesome!
This is going to be a great tournament. I’m really looking forward to it.
❤😊
I wonder if Kirishima will follow Otowayama Oyakata

Nice fan fiction you wrote

"Last year, you won more bouts than anyone else. What are your thoughts on this?" -Hiro
"Losers. They are all losers." -Kirishima, probably
☝️❤
