Hello, sumo fans! Thanks for tuning into SUMO PRIME TIME. The September Tournament is now in the books, and we witnessed a dominant performance by Sekiwake Onosato, who claimed his second title and earned promotion to Ozeki. With Yokozuna Terunofuji frequently absent, we can assume the newly promoted Ozeki will be a favorite in every tournament going forward. At just 24, Onosato has already broken several records since turning pro. Given his impressive track record, we expect him to continue racking up wins and making sumo history. We hope you stay tuned for Onosato’s journey as he pursues even greater success. Arigato, and see you soon!

That Onosato Wakatakakage bout was intense. Sitting here wishing and wondering if Wakatakakage never had that knee injury, but his brother sure did pick up the slack with him out
onosato is still fast but already has the strength of a yokozuna. time will temper his sumo, he's still so young, reaching ozeki and injury free! his future is bright.
Yeah, odd that he has not picked up a cup yet. This tournament... was a bit lackluster for him. He had a hairy moment during the tour prep, where his ankle looked injured. Was he fighting on an injured ankle perhaps?
@@MarquePierreSondergaard Lackluster was right, especially that bout against Ura where he just seemed to give up at the reeds. All I know is that I'm happy that Ura got a kachi koshi! Although we lost more fighters that were regulars when I started watching sumo. I'm particularly gonna miss Aoiyama in the dohyo.
Onosato remains calm, he thinks during his matches, and he has youth, strength, technique and ability on his side. I think he will go all the way to the top job in the not too distant future - and he'll stay there.
So sad that the Battle Hamster had to retire :-( Onasato just looks so completely in command of the basics. It’s very clean. Yay for Ura! And Hiradoumi is becoming one of my favourite wrestlers. It’s like he discovered another gear of speed. Didn’t work out this tournament but so exciting to see him progress now.
If Onosato stays healthy and keeps on this path of winning, we may witness the birth of the next Yokozuna. If he were to win the next 3 tournaments like this one, he could be the fastest-rising Yokozuna in history.
The basho was good...but us overseas fans are really wishing to see more complete coverage of at least the first 2-3 tiers ( Makushita, Juryo, Makuuchi). Very impressive showing from Onosato. The rank of Ozeki certainly belongs to him now. I wonder if he should win the november tournament in similar fashion if he may be considered for the highest rank.
I'm glad that justice was celebrated. I was surprised by many people's wrestling. I didn't expect such good results from them. I think that Ono Sato is the closest to the rank of yokuzuna. Kirishima is not strong enough physically. That's why he lost several times. Kotozakura is also physically weak, so he obviously doesn't have the strength often. Besides, they understood the plan.He tries to raise his hands under his armpits and defeat his opponents in this way.Now it doesn't work with many anymore. That's why he loses. He must either perfect his technique or add another technique. All in all a few rikishi have shown the effectiveness of physical power well. For example, how Hoshoryu beat Kirishima. There are many who are big and heavy like Ono Sato, but due to lack of physical strength, they cannot achieve much.I watched the second sumo tournament and I am very satisfied. Before, I thought they were only fat men, but now I know that the fat is on the outside. On the inside, there are quite strong muscles and a body.
I'm pretty new to the world of Sumo and am still learning all the rules. If Onosato continues with his current path of victories, never falling to below 11 wins, would he be considered for promotion to Yokozuna by the end of the March tournament? Or does his first tournament as a newly promoted Ozeki not count towards his required victories?
@@internetpolizeiagree, even a 15-0 yusho wont be enough, but 2 yusho i think even if 11-4 and 12-3, thats 3 straight yushos (not that this yusho should mean anything) but thats still holy 3 straight... That shot we never seen since hakuho healthy days
Even though two straight tournament wins as Ozeki is a typical expectation, there are no strict requirements for Yokozuna promotion. Teranofuji was promoted to Yokozuna with only one win as Ozeki. Sumo is in dire need of another Yokozuna, so if Onosato wins the November tournament with a 15-0 or 14-1 record, he will likely be promoted to Yokozuna.
Two tournaments back to back is the benchmark, though in the past some have been promoted for less. For a newly minted Ozeki like Onosato it will definitely be two in a row, in a years time who knows. The JSA do not want a flash in the pan, we've already seen Kirishima on the brink of Yokozuna promotion only to fall right down to Sekiwake.
He may need his sumo skills to be a bit more dynamic otherwise other wrestlers will eventually deny him his style of sumo. We've seen competing in Ozeki has its challenges. I wish him continuing success 🙏
If Onosato wins another title in November, could he be promoted to yokozuna and if his hair is still not long enough for the ginko leaf will he be the first yokozuna without a ginko leaf?
I like the guy, but watching him tells me that smart opponents will figure him out soon. His main assets are his size, youth, and soundness; not his technical arsenal, which is not large. He has a big challenge ahead, to grow variations of technique enough to fight in multiple ways well enough to defeat other, more specialized rikishi; as would befit a Yokozuna.
Absolutely right. And that's why I love sumo, because it's so unpredictable. I would love to see Onosato rise to yoko soon, but as you mentioned, he will be figured out soon and will need to be more versatile. Can't wait for November!
You would think someone would have figured this out by now. He's had 3 tournaments with over 11 wins - that's a lot of matches. Plenty of matches with ozekis as well who haven't seemed to figure it out.
I am not really concerned honestly. His basics are very good, and there is no shame in losing to Wakataka. The Abi match was his only fluke this basho. His master was arguably less physically gifted and made yokozuna in a time with 3 other yokozunas. If you look at the shitty Ozeki performances, who is gonna challenge him next basho? If he wins it they will just give him the white rope and thats that, hes gonna win bashos without end.
Onosato has very solid fundamentals, has great ring awareness, and he's consistently fast and strong. He's been this way for several tournaments now, and everyone hasn't seemed to figure him out yet. I'm not too concerned about other rikishi finding an answer to his playbook.
Whats to figure out?? Your going to figure out that he's much more powerful than you? 🤣 He's big and strong and powerful... It would be like trying to figure out Terunofuji or Ichinojo... There's no secret technique that's going to suddenly unlock the way to beat Onosato... You have to fight him for better position and out power him... That's it.
I'm not quite sure when the official tally starts but there is more to getting Yokozuna than just getting the number. Basically, the JSA can do whatever they want and the council that decides is a closed affair that looks at a lot of things, not just number of wins. There have been incidents in the past where Ozeki or Yokozuna titles were not awarded after the official winning numbers were reached, for reasons that the council doesn't really need to make public. I doubt they would give it to him quickly in any case, and now thinking about it I think it starts from when you're an Ozeki anyway so he would at minimum need to win the next few. I would say they would likely hold off even if he does but all that said if he keeps winning it gets harder for them to justify not giving it to him. Then again Takarurfuji is is out of the lower division after his injury and given how he ran through the whole field last time he was in the upper division and that he wasted all of his lower level competition this basho the next basho is shaping up to look very interesting. Kirishima's looking good again, The Waka brothers are looking good too even Shodai and Oho put up respectable numbers. The next one could be a wild ride!
Weight is generally seen as an advantage yes, but remember, more weight means less mobility. The great Yokozuna Chiyonofuji The Wolf was not tall or big in bulk, but trained to build up his muscle mass to overcome his size, and became imho the greatest wrestler in living memory.
You will see a change in technique with some of the smaller fighters, like going for the legs and stepping to the side, that the bigs either can't get away with or aren't as good at. It keeps it exciting.

He's big and strong and powerful... It would be like trying to figure out Terunofuji or Ichinojo... There's no secret technique that's going to suddenly unlock the way to beat Onosato... You have to fight him for better position and out power him... That's it.
If Onosato wins in November, does he become Yokozuna? Or would he have to win 2 in a row starting in November?
So how long to Yokozuna if he keeps on healthy?
Onosato needs to win 2 yusho in a row, as Ozeki, for Yokozuna.
He's not even in his prime yet.
That was his 9th professional tournament, ever.
Does he hold the record for the fastest for attaining the rank of Ozeki? And the youngest to make Ozeki?
He is the fastest, but not the youngest. The youngest ozeki was Takanohana(20 yo)
Finally the video 🙏🏻
Onasato has that squarish build reminiscent of Yutakayama...I always felt that Yutakayama performed below his potential
I’m very happy for Onosato. My favorite is Kotozakura and I’m happy he got his kk.
Kotozakura actually lost to Tobizaru, but wrongly given the win, which means he had a mk, and should be 'katoban' right now.
@@ernienegrete5702 but he isn’t so yeah
Only at least, 8 wins for Kotozakura, next basho, would make it a *moot* point.

Wondering, is it fair if the wrestlers are not the same weight?? I once saw, a person weighs 145 kg and the opponent weighs 165 kg..
That's sumo. There are no weight classes.
