- This video shows you how to remove the slack in the steering wheel caused by gear wear over time/miles.
Sloppy steering
Adjust steering box.
You only need to tighten 1/8 turns (very little) then keep on checking.
Most cars have this nut and tightening screw located on the steering box.
Absolutely the best video steering slack repair. Your effort was not wasted. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thant you, it is not that hard to do.
Gentleman and scholar...from his ass to his collar.
Good tutorial video
Great video just adjusted my bronco and it’s no longer a boat.
That was pretty easy
lmaooo a boat
Sir, you have saved me 350+ quoted on a new gearbox. thank you very much
Made my day.
When tightening, ideally you'd want to hold the adjustment with the screwdriver and tighten with a wrench. Or, loosen the adjustment a bit, and tighten with a socket. The reason is the adjustment screw will turn with the nut, and can over tighten
Yes
WOW!!!! That was AMAZINGLY simple! Thank you, David!
See how some things are easy if only someone would tell you.
Have a nice day.
Watched this video then did same thing to my 92 f150. Worked great, thanks.
And it is not hard to do
Got the same year, haven't done it yet cause I have to drive to appointments but I think I can fix it now. The play is baaad.
If you tighten the screw too much, the recoil when you turn around corners will not come back on its own. Which means you’ll need to go back and loosen it some. Nice video though sir. 👍🏻
Thank you
Good comment
Just enough to take slack out. First make sure steering shaft doesn't have play between upper and lower half ,which is a common slack causing problem on 87 -96 f series .
@@randallcarney1216 Thanks - good information
Great information really helped and now I learned a lot from you
This is not hard to do.
Just trying to teach people.
FRICKIN AWESOME video bud.....you taught thisnext gen or ours a great video...i especially liked how you referenced other steer boxes....great job again brother.....
I am trying to revile the secrets. Some things are so easy.
Thanks sir! I'm glad that is so simple. I was frustrated a lot with my truck.
The hardest thing it to get access to the screw.
Thanks man ! It just sucks how hard it is to get to. Good video.
But it worked.
Good presentation, thanks for the tips & info - thanks Dave !!
Little tricks save a lot of money.
Thanks a bunch!! I’m gonna tackle that once my truck is nice and cool.
Thanks. Not hard and doesn't take long.
Have a 94 F150, I'll try this. Thankyou!!!
Same truck.
I don't use mine in the snow so I keep it away from the salt on the roads. It will probably last longer than me.
Great video bro! Thank you
Not that hard, just have to know the tricks.
I still have that 1995 F150 pickup. Keep it at my mother's house in Upstate NY. Use it 3 weeks Memorial Day and 3 weeks Labor Day. I will be long dead before that stops running.
Brother, you're a freakin hero
Thank you - I guess it helped you
Thank you!
Not hard
very insightful thanks heaps mate
Thank you
Going to give it a try
Give it a try. Let me know what happened.
You are a wizard.
No. My dad showed that to me 50 years ago.
Hi David, can this screw bottom out? I have an old camaro and can’t tighten it any more. Feels like I’m constantly correcting the wheeI while driving. I think your videos are great, keep up the good work!
May I add something? When you make the yellow mark, also mark the the adjustment screw. Great video.
Good idea
Good info.
Not that hard
thank you david!!
Not very hard and your steering wheel feels better.
Thanks
Not that hard to do.
My 96 drives straight wheel is straight but you can move the wheel maybe 3-4 inches before the wheels move. Will this fix the issue Thanks.
No
I believe you have a bigger problem like ball joints.
Get someone to turn the wheel side to side and look under the truck at all the steering joints. Most likely you will see one or more that are wear out and move a lot. You should be able to see it without a problem.
Let me know what you find.
@@davidlis6709 Hey thanks for the info. I'll definitely do that in the next couple days
Thanks! Hope this works for me
Yes it will unless the steering box is completely wear out. 500,000 miles
Don't know the miles. I just got the truck and most of the dashboard gauges don't work lol
@@herculespoopable Just need the speedometer and gas gauge.
Just looked yesterday. The guy that had the truck before me took the speed sensor out and never replaced it. Yay more work lol
But i think the miles are around 144,000
Lot easier than shimming the colum
And your frame that holds the box as a huge crack ik been 3 years just look at frames it a things with F 150.
Good information
Thanks
Bad idea. That is not to take slack out! Read the book
Will it work for 2002 avalanche?
Works on everything with an adjustment bolt on the box. I also adjusted my 1970 Chevelle, same process.
Avalanche is rack and pinion steering i believe.
SHOULD call the video how to adjust the steering box. The play can come from lots of sources...ball joints, tie rods and oddly, in that truck play in the collapsible steering rods separated by a bushing.
Sometimes I struggle with the title of these videos. Good suggestion.
@@davidlis6709 Small potatoes really, keep up the content.
Thank you!
You are welcome.
It is not hard if someone shows you.
