Range Rover Sport - Best of Both Worlds?

- Matt takes the all-new Range Rover Sport for a little on and off-road testing. It's faster to sixty than a Boxster and has more ground clearance than a Wrangler, with all the luxury you'd want, but is it worth the asking price? Let's find out.

Can you do a bad review? I don't think so, haha. Love all the snarky comments to keep it lighthearted and funny while still giving lots of good information to make it a helpful and serious review. Bravo Matt!
One to talk, your videos have been amazing since day one! Also congrats on the 2013 channel review!
100% agree. The puns and jokes make the video less serious but also keeping it serious. I love them!
Great review. Really glad you guys do both this, and Tuned. Much appreciated!
@ 1:36 "On Rims" lololololol
Any car, specially a heavy SUV, will only do very low mpg if you are a heavy with the right foot most of the time. Even a small car can surprise you if driven sporty all the time. Those mpg numbers from all factories are done by applying gas ever so slowly with lowest possible rpm.
Thanks Matt for the reply. Continue telling great stories and not going to jail. We enjoy watching your reviews. Especially involving that super cherry DeLorean. The OD still blows my mind.
Great video Hopefully we'll see more frequent posts!
I like this voiceover review style. less initial impression and more time for carefully worded review. keep it up!
Awesome review Matt! Happy Holidays to you and the crew.
New TST always look forwards to these videos. Keep it up guys and Happy Holidays.
Yes, as a retired TV commercial producer, (for Toyota) Amateur filmmaker today and 'Full Fat' Range Rover owner, congratulations on a nicely presented video, carefully shot and cleverly edited!
Nice, quick, and informative. Well done sir, thank you.
I think these are pretty cool. Not exactly $170,000 cool (at least in Canada) but cool nonetheless.
nice dude...where is the rebel version?
Matt Farah version of the Range Rover piece.
The review started, I loved it, and it finished. Really was expecting one of your 8-10min in depth reviews. #keepemcoming
Wait, at 2:44 the tachometer is physical.but I thought the range rover sport had the same TFT monitor gauge like the big range rover?
I really like the Range Rover brand but I'm not entirely sure if I'd buy the Sport over a Cayenne. The Full Size one though is like THE SUV to get
Full size rover is so game over its ridiculous. Best four wheeled vehicle money can buy.
In your words, sounds like a fantastic car. Great review as always, Matt.
AWESOME review Matt.
"When I drive it my life is better" haha brilliant. Yeah we make some brilliant cars in Britain.
Where were those off road segments filmed exactly? Looks like an awesome place for some Sunday off-roading.
Yeah, it was on a private ranch north of San Francisco.
uhg you made giving up my dream of a 14 RRS next year even more bitter! Love the video :)
Excellent review Matt
If I lived on a ranch in Monterrey or Carmel, this is what I would buy.
Fuck. I need to figure out how to get more moneyz.
The smoking tire is the shit! I just wish they uploaded more vids frequently.
Between this channel and our show Tuned on Drive, we upload at least one video every single week, and that's a full time job.
Matt, can you do a review on the g63 or g65, please?
I love rovers, if I had one it'd be muddy n dusty 90% of the time, cuz i'd actually use it for what its for.
If I had the money for a Range Rover, it would be super clean on the outside, but dusted with cocaine and pussy juice on the inside. Because I'd use it for what it's for.
A fellow I work with has a new Range Rover Autobiography with the 4.4 liter diesel. Many Monday mornings he has pulled into the office with his beloved RR covered with caked on sand, mud and clumps of various vegetation...and a lot of interesting stories :-)
Matt, quality video. I was wondering if you knew how Rover can have such fuel inefficient vehicles but pass all the average fuel mileage requirements that supposedly all car companies have to pass in US markets. And how is it that you said 140 mph in this video when you tend to never say actual speeds?
I would like to see this Rover drag race a boxer then out perform a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in the same take. That would be a very impressive thing. Regardless it is a very capable and well built machine, for big $$.
1) I never say actual speeds while I'm driving the car; that's called evidence. If, on the other hand, I say "yeah, this morning I went 140," but don't actually show it, I'm just telling a story. 2) I don't expect any actual owners to drive the car the way I drove it on the launch. Heavy footed, as fast as possible, is not how most people drive when they have 510 hp.
Can somebody please explain to me the "on riiiimmmms" reference? I've heard him say it several times.. is he quoting somebody?
7. I'm glad he repeated it because I was thinking,
Me: "Man there's no wa..."
Matt: "7"
Me: "DAAAAAAM"
Did he mean 7 mpg????????
@@amerywalker3063 yup. F*cking 7
Wow $22K for an 03 M3 is a LOT of money, a decent M3 over here would be achievable for £10K ($16.5K), not sure you'd get a Fiesta ST for close to that... Makes the rain and lack on canyon roads almost bearable!!
Have to congratulate you on your reviews, you really get some nice modded cars over there, i particularly like the modded 911's..
Keep up the good work.
No mention of the srt grand Cherokee
The thought this review was going to be NC-17 before you were done.
great review
Great review.
the burger in my hands would not taste as good without watching matt's reviews. and also its not easy typing with one hand
You got 7mpg during the highway or going up hills? That's terrible if it was on the road.. I really doubt it gets 7 from normal driving.
RR Sport (off-road ability) vs. ML63 (luxury) vs. new X5M (handling) vs. Cayenne Turbo S (acceleration) vs. Grand Cherokee SRT (price)
Which one would be the best?
Depends entirely on your priorities. Personally, I think the RR Sport offers the best balance between all those aspects. Great on-road mannerisms, fast enough to make any driver happy, as much luxury as you'd ever ask for, and plenty of off-road chops.
Off-road battle, a regular RR or your Raptor
ready....GO!
I might object to the wrangler comment. The LR is fairly pricey, compare it to the top spec wrangler and take into account almost all wrangler owners will put more aggressive tires on it whereas the LR owners will likely not, the average top spec wrangler on the road will spank the new LR.
I didn't say top-spec. I said "Wrangler."
Driving this and a number of rubicons. Id choose this. Far better quality, feels less tinny, more control, less understeer, less oversteer on slippery surfaces, far better acceleration, it is an all around better package. The only thing that I may take over a rover is thw cherokee srt8. Awesome machine, didnt want to let off the throttle in it. But it is more competition for the cayenne
I have learn that this is my future car next to the Porsche panamara turbo S
That was 4min 45sec well spent, although I'll probably never make it to buy one of these
bold move with the better than a wrangler comment
I apologize if you have answered this before, so please forgive my ignorance, but how do you guys decide on the length of any particular video? I notice this review is shorter than most of the others that you have.
This one, I went on the press launch by myself, so the only footage I had to work with was what I could shoot on two GoPros and what Range Rover was able to provide in corporate B-Roll. So to answer your question, if we have enough footage, we'd rather be longer and more thorough, but it wasn't really an option this time.
TheSmokingTire Your insight is very much appreciated.
Range Rover are one of my favorite cars but they need to do something about the price
Or a grand Cherokee SRT 8
You earned a like and a favorite
This was awesome.
When it comes to off-road comfort and on road performance, the hummer H2 wins hands down against any car in my opinion.people hate on it for its looks or gas etc but those arguments make no sense, because we all say we care about gas consumption yet the most popular videos are those of cars, that do 8mpg
On road performance lol. Plus the interior's crap, and cramped. Still, they look kind of cool, and drug dealers drive them-just like RR's.
On road is great.......I dunno We had an 03 H2 for many years and it was fantastic. HAHA the drug dealer part is true.
Keep it up Matt. You and C.Harris post the best car vids out there by far. Everyone else can GTFO on their rimz as long as you guys keep making videos. Need more with both of you together though. :)
Im not trying to be a dick but i doubt that it is more capable offroad than a wrangler...
It has more ground clearance, a more advanced traction control system, and better wading depth. It may not be more capable off-road than a heavily modified Wrangler, but stock for stock, the Range wins.
Superman The "premo" rover is the full size Range Rover. This is the "sport" which compromises off-road ability for on-road dynamics, like the standard Wrangler Sport does.
Superman This sport isn't based on the Discovery anymore it uses the Full Size Range rover chassis,
TheSmokingTire
You can't just look at ground clearance when off roading. And do you really think submerging a RR in 30" of water isn't going to cause problems? You submerge an ECU in water, even in a properly designed vehicle, you're going to have problems. Not to mention the starter, alternator, and all the other damned wiring bits. You may be able to pull in air thanks to hood intakes, but you're going to ruin a lot of stuff. You also need to look at axle articulation and approach and departure angles. Let's see the RTI scores for the RR... Tire size also makes a difference. Also, IS is SOOOOOOOOO much worse off road than proper solid axles.
TheSmokingTire
And just because the Wrangler Sport has on-road compromises doesn't mean this is the accurate comparison to the RR Sport. The RR Sport costs more than TWICE what a RUBICON costs.
I like this Range a lot but it isn't more capable of road than Wrangler. Maybe a base one but not a Rubicon. Btw, nice to the point review Matt.
... which is why I said Wrangler, and specifically not Rubicon. Statements such as that are all about the subtlety.
I like this Range Rover a lot. And it's a lot of things a Jeep could never be. But I don't think "more off road capable" is one of those things. At the very least, due to the mandatory wheel size. Not to mention I wouldn't want a rock within 2 feet of my 100 grand luxury SUV.
the range rover sport is an excellent off roader but its not better than a wrangler lol when it comes to off roading you don't care about ground clearance but approach departure and brake over angles and the range rover has independent suspensions the wrangler has solid axles and the range rover comes with street tires the wrangler comes with 50%street tires 50% off road tires and I'm talking about the base model wrangler because you can't even compare any range rover with a wrangler rubicon with front and rear lockers
Very luxurious and cool car, but way too pricey. Still, I will dream of owning one someday!
Question is, how does this compare to a Porsche Cayenne ?
The Cayenne is really a "sport tuned" car. It's focus is towards on-road driving dynamics, not off-roading. While it's true that a Cayenne can handle some basic off-road driving, it's really not the proper choice for it. The Range is much, much better at that stuff, and comes with much more hardware oriented towards it. Plus, driving them back to back, the Cayenne does feel a bit overpriced for what you get compared to the Range.
TST did the new RR? Where? I subscribe and i haven`t seen it....
The Next Range Rover, On and Off-Road Review
TheSmokingTire ANY chance of seeing a Singer 911 on TST?
very cool!
more capable offroad then a jeep wrangler? i doubt that
Stock for stock, absolutely. Granted, there are more options to build a Wrangler into a rock-crawling beast, but the data says that the Range has more ground clearance, wheel articulation capability, wading depth, wheel travel, and a better traction control system designed for off-roading than the Jeep.
So I had the experience of getting in one, riding in, etc, and honestly the interior was not 100K nice. Without question I would be bringing my 100K elsewhere in terms of interior. Kind of dated and uninspired, I don't know why everyone raves about it.
7 what??? OMG
I wonder who wrote that and how much money they got paid for it.. and who was paying them.
1) Matt, 2) Zero, 3) No one, since no one got paid. These claims are so hilarious because we'd all LOVE for manufacturers to pay us to review cars. I'd be living like a fucking king. But that just ain't how shit works.
On rims!!
7mpg?!? pretty thirsty, eh!
Matt, what back surgeries have you had?
I've had two discectomies. Don't recommend it. Take care of your spine; you only have one.
Wow, that's brutal to hear. I am a car nut, but I believe I have the early signs of Ankylosing Spondylitis…Sure doesn't help when all I love to do is drive like you. Great reviews though - you are living with the dream job, I can only imagine how much fun it is. Keep them coming.
2 major back surgeries? What happened man?
Loved the video. Love the rover. However saying it's better off road than a wrangler is ridiculous and proves your a city boy that has never been anywhere without cell service..
Or, it means I look at data, which shows the Range Rover has more ground clearance, better wading depth, a more advanced traction control system, more power, etc. I never said it was better at rock crawling, which is a very specific type of off-roading that Wranglers, with their dual live axle setup, happen to excel at. But in all other types of off-roading, the Range Rover has more ability.
Im pretty sure its not as good as a Wrangler Rubicon offroad..... Sure is better ON road tho lol
Short and sweeet
More capable than a Wrangler my ass. It's still an independent suspension setup, ain't no way in hell you're going to be able to perform as well off road than anything with front and rear solid axles. Even with a swaybar disconnect, there isn't enough articulation in the IS to avoid going on 3 wheels on obstacles. Plus, the approach and departure angles on the RR are awful compared to a Wrangler. 2013 Wrangler Rubicon - 44.3* approach angle, 40.4 departure. On the RR you're looking at 33.0 approach and 31.0 departure - you're gonna rip some shit off of that body.
How much did you get paid to do this review Matt?
It would be so awesome if I got paid by manufacturers to do reviews. But anyone with any knowledge of the situation knows how laughable an accusation that is.
Great review…maybe you can teach "The Fast Lane Car/Truck" guys how to do a proper review.
it kind of looks like the rogue :/
I find that you often praise US cars a little too much. This time however, it's nice to hear that you think the Range is better than a Jeep. No offence Matt, but your love for America can sometimes make you seem a little dumb ;)
AND TO EVERY US VIEWER, Yeah I know you are gonna hate on me now. Go ahead.
He doesn't praise American cars a little too much. Unlike others, Matt doesn't hate American cars simply because they are American and "overlook" the massive flaws in European cars in an attempt to be hip and cool.
It's much more likely that you, as an audience member, hear what you want to hear, rather than I over-praise American cars. I can't think of a single American car I've reviewed where I gave more praise than was due, or where I gave something extra credit just for being American. Every company, every country, from Ford to Ferrari, from Germany to Korea, makes good cars and bad cars.
As a viewer from Europe I can say Matt never over praised a US car. I've seen all his videos and seen him criticize US cars, the last one was Cadillac ATS. And remember that these videos are his best estimate on the cars as HE sees them, just like we all have our own preferences, as obvious in all the RUclips discussions. Maybe you have a very different way than Matt of seeing cars. But I find him a real car enthusiast and that is a assurance for him praising good cars, no matter where they come from.
I think Matt is about as unbiased as you can get reviewing cars. Maybe you're lack of knowledge surrounding American cars makes you seem dumb. American cars have gotten SO much better in the past ten years and people like you just hate on them because they are American(definition of bias) without actually taking the time to inform yourself about the car.
Matt is the exact opposite of top gear uk. Top gear uk is biased, ignorant, and far from funny, yet theyre being worshiped just cuz they hate American cars and insult the US and Americans whenever they can. TheSmokingTire is for realists. This show should get millions of views, while top gear uk (and all top gear shows since theyre all paid off and scripted to be anti-US) should close, quit, stop making videos. And despite my youtube name, you heard this from a European who lives in the EU.
lol range rover on "remiss" (rims)
haha "on reems"
That's a bad Bitch!
lol better off road than a wrangler, hes funny
Obviously if you can afford one of these you don't care about gas prices. So, 7mpg isn't really relevant in the real world. What is relevant is the tank size. Even if it's 25 gallons you're only getting a range of 175 miles.
But most people wouldn't drive the Range the way I drove it. I had 4 hours with the car, I'm going to drive the hell out of it. I'm going to go flat where normal people don't go flat. I'm going to go heavy into the brakes to see what they can do. I'm going to squeal tires, launch, and climb shit. If you owned the car it wouldn't be that bad, it's just funny that it was such a low number for my test.
Better than Rubicon off road? ridiculous!!!
I sense the end of JEEP is near...
:(
ollllllo
7mpg average? Wtf thats awful
It's not more off-road worthy than a wrangler
witty review. 7 mpg? 7? really? ho-ly sheeeee-it.
biased towards RR
I love your stuff Matt, but if you think the Range Rover is better off road than a Wrangler Rubicon, you're on crack.
Rob Ford style crack. The crack you clearly don't remember that you did.
I didn't say Rubicon. I said Wrangler. A subtle, but in this case, key difference.
Rubicon is a trim level of the Wrangler. Considering the comparison to a $100,000 (ish) vehicle, I assumed you'd be comparing to the top tier of the Wrangler. My mistake, and this makes the comparison much more reasonable.
GTFO or RTFM?
more capable than a wrangler? no shit, my lancer is more capable than a wrangler, gone to shit these days
I love rovers, if I had one it'd be muddy n dusty 90% of the time, cuz i'd actually use it for what its for.
2 major back surgeries? What happened man?
