Glad to help with the challenge. Behind the scenes, I got really close to making a Gecko Code that made all Pikmin into Puffmin at all times, but ran into technical difficulties with how many things were trying to cure the Puffmin. When I tried to stub the code that runs after a Puffmin is flicked off an enemy, it would for some reason lock the Puffmin in an unresponsive state. After that setback, I gave up and went with Press A's original request: simply putting a Puffstool in every landing zone.

Heya, developer here. A possible reason your pikmin were dying off-screen to the lava spouts when you weren't looking could be due to how the game is optimized. My theory is that the game saves on resources by not running the AI of entities that aren't visible on screen, which explains why you aren't being attacked by off-screen enemies: their AI is disabled. I suspect that the game still keeps their collision and hit boxes in memory however, allowing them to be interactible. This includes objects being carried back to the onion/spaceship, and your pikmin. Since environmental objects do not have an AI state, that optimization might not include them, either as a side-effect or deliberately, meaning the lava spouts continue to spew fire and burn your very much still-intractible pikmin when you aren't looking. Or I could be wrong entirely, I'm not familiar with the code behind the Pikmin games, merely a theory. Excellent video as always, much love!
It's also possible because he's using puffmen, which he isn't supposed to have, they're treated differently. He could just be stacking undocumented behavior.
I know Pikmin 2 also has a system where if a captain or Pikmin is close enough to an object it'll be loaded no matter what, so I'm wondering if something like that also applies to 1.
I wonder if it's possible that looking away pauses the state of a fire geyser, so if you look away while one is active, it's permanently active until you look back at it
@@thinkingfubuki The best way to know for sure would be to inspect the memory addresses for these geysers while the player is looking at them, and while they aren't, and observing if there's a difference in behaviour between the two. That might not be too tricky to pull off either.

Sample (the guy who showed Press A the "Dumple flick") made that video already, unfortunately you need 1 of each color of Pikmin to beat the game. And technically at least 50 pikmin to pick up every part so that the ship absorbs it (but he still got the part to the ship without pikmin) since the game doesn't know to grab a part unless its being held, even if the part in directly in the spot in front of the ship. He also can't defeat the final boss without insane luck on bomb rock spawns points (though it is theoretically possible without modding). Great video!
When I was a wee babby I was convinced that there was some way to unlock purple pikmin (puffmin) as aa super secret op pikmin. I tried beating the game as fast as possible, exploring for easter eggs, etc but never got anything. Really wished I knew all you had to do was whistle... huh.
Speedrunning has taught me that enemies that are off screen can still get loaded back in if pikmin are too close to them (i think) if you lure them away from the pikmins path they will be too far to be loaded back in
26:49 this is the third comment i made where i tell i did the unintended harder way or the intended way that no one else does. I didn't know that throwing different coloured pikmin in a coloured flower thing made different pikmin. I got yellow and blue pikmin, threw the yellow pikmin precisely on the stone land. go on the stone land to get the yellow pikmin to throw to the island to the part, get the part of the ledge, get blue pikmin to grab the part all the to the ship and do the same process i did with my yellow pikmin to get on the island with the part to get off the island and back to land. I truly am a cool idiot
17:17 My guess is that puffmin and traps are always loaded; the former because they'd still count against your pikmin total since they can easily revert to normal, and the latter because they're part of the map (not moving and lacking a health bar) instead of the enemy count.
When I saw the title I seriously thought this was a joke video lol! But I was pleasantly surprised, great job as always!!! Also shout out to Minty Meeo he’s done some incredible Pikmin projects!
Yes... YES! Someone else who knows about the puffmin whistle glitch! I never hear anyone talk about it! Though I'm a little confused. I remember them just kinda dying after a set amount of time, which was frustrating cause I had a theory the puffmin were immune to all elements since they counted as enemies, but they kept perishing before I could get to multiple element hazards. Though maybe I just don't remember right since I was quite young back then.
btw, the English version of Zelda Minish Cap perhaps has a Pikmin 1 reference. The mushroom-like enemies that spread dust when they attack, in the English version of Minish Cap, they are named Puffstool, possibly a reference to the Puffstools in Pikmin 1. From what I've read long long ago from commenters online, the JP version of Minish Cap does not have this reference to Pikmin 1 with that enemy. I know the enemy is also named Puffstool, because me when I was much younger, if I remember right, 100%'d the figurine collection in Minish Cap. I went out of my way to grind Mysterious Shells to pull the figurine gatcha in that game to get them all
Technically the final number could be 4 pikmin and 2 throws, instead of using 10 blues to push the box you don’t push it at all. Throw a single pikmin on top of the ledge then clip out of bounds and walk up to the pikmin. Swarm the snagret every time his head gets stuck until that one pikmin kills him. Then push the part into the water and carry it back with your puffmin, would save 10 throws and 9 pikmin, regardless though great video always, keep it up:)
13:30 The pellet doesn't slide when it's close to the wall. It slides because it's on a slope and you're touching it with olimar. If you walk away it wouldn't slide. 17:12 Fire geysers, like other enemies off screen aren't just unloaded magically because they're off screen. When pikmin walk past enemies or fire geysers, they load again. So technically it's wrong to say off screening ACB to collect Radiation Canopy just works. It doesn't. It can fail even if off screen because pikmin reload stuff when nearby.
21:30 i didn't know that you needed to do that. i thought you had to be precise with yellow pikmin on the tight bridge and continue to grab the part off the ledge with blue pikmin. in hindsight i should've realised that.
My theory on the fire geysers is that the game needs a way to have enemies be able to attack pikmin on their way back if the return trip isnt safe. Maybe the presence of enemies causes things to stay rendered around them for this purpose, and since Puffmin are technically enemies, they render the fire. The reason this works normally is because, in all other circumstances, there *are* no enemies there. Of course, Im a newer player, so I'm only going on preexisting game design knowledge.
@@peco595 y’know yeah, when I played Pikmin 1 I didn’t even encounter them once…and I had to play the game twice and I was surprised I shouldn’t be talking
My educated guess as to why the fire geysers weren't unloaded perhaps has to do with them being treated as environmental obstacles, thus are always globally-loaded instead of locally-loaded like the enemies and plants. I don't know for sure without looking into the files, but that's my best guess.
23:45 When dealing with these and other sherwigs near water I bait them into just crawling right into it. They start to drown and will take off to survive. However, you can have Olimar start slapping them as soon as they get in the water. This will stack the two kinds of damage and they won't manage to avoid becoming blue pikmin snacks.
Geyser theory: maybe the reason the fire geysers weren't safe when derendered is because they were derendered in the 'on' state, and thus just active while invis, rather than just being truly off, and in fact in such a state likely never TURNING off because they're not rendered to update that state?
I’m not 100% sure but I think that the puffmin don’t work when their off camera since they are considered enemies so they don’t have the same function of staying functional even when unloaded like normal Pikmin.
Speaking of the whole unloaded enemies trick- do Bulbears not count for this? I remember a while back replaying the game and since I was across the map getting a piece, I figured if I didnt follow my pikmins, the bulbears wouldnt eat them all- but unfortunately it wasnt until the very end of the day that I spotted all the pieces I had picked (2-3) close to the base with zero pikmins around so it seems they were all eaten without me realizing it. Does that mean it only works if I never spawned them to begin with with the camera? The most I could think of is that since they were already loaded in from when I walked past them earlier in the day, they just stuck around the entire time?
I really liked this video. I've been watching your videos for some time now and really liked the series and am glad you continued it. Anyways, I really like your videos.😊
To get past the rock wall, you tricked a Bulborb... into eating a Pikmin with a bomb rock next to it. I feel like you'd be able to lockpick my front door with an egg or something if I told you I was holding onto the Gluon Drive.
17:25 If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say that that one time you got it to work you just so happened to time it perfectly for your Pikmin to walk through without being burned.
I started the Video right now, so idk if this will come in the video, but i know that as i played the Wii Pikmin 1 as a child that sometimes the Puffmin was not bad and not good, they had a mushroom but they color was the same as before the transmotation, but in this state they don't attakc you, but you also can't controll them. :o (Edit, they looked like the Pikmin version they was before they was a Puffmin, but in idle) Edit edit: I am not sure anymore how this process was, but maybe i will try this in the future again)
I don't know, if this will be interesting or possible, but how about a sorta "enemy-nuzlocke"? If you defeat an enemy-species once, you aren't allowed to beat it a second time. Making you decide, when to kill a bulborb, when to ignore it or when to distract it.
Awesome stuff, a challenge i really didnt expect to see!!! i will say, now that you did a challenge with a not real pikmin type for Pikmin 1, i kinda wanna see you tackle Pikmin 2 as the pikpik carrots (yes thats a real pikmin type that you can spawn in the game)
17:10 Off screen enemies are loaded back in when pikmin are close enough to them. I assume what happened in the previous video is that the fire geysers loaded in and out with perfect timing.
My cat was screaming at the EXACT same time yours was at around 24:20, I thought I was having a stroke hearing double for a second 😂 Excellent video as always!
17:10 @PressA the only thing that makes sense to me is that the geysers are on a global timer while the enemies are not. A global timer would help them stay in sync so it would make sense for them to implement that into the game. This is how it works in Mario Maker 2 with the fire bars :)
@@Themacattack1209you'd only need 5 new models, and you could reuse the animations from the normal pikmin. 1 model also would've worked fine, since all puffmin in 1 use the same model
If you want to try a challenge that focuses more on the routing side of things than on raw execution, I think it would be interesting if you tried to grow the absolute maximum amount of Pikmin possible (and still escaping the planet) within the 30 day limit. That isn't to say that the execution will be easy, since you'll basically have to collect every pellet and corpse on the map every single day for maximum Pikmin yield, in addition to the usual ship parts, but if you have a good enough route it ought to be possible. It'd also be really insightful when it comes to learning the ins and outs of the game's enemy spawning and respawning mechanics, building the best possible route based on what day certain enemies first show up, and how many days it takes for certain enemies come back to life once killed, if ever. Edit: Though you'll probably want to use savestates, otherwise pellet RNG might screw you over at a bad time.
17:27 it might be because those fire geysers are always/every other frame loaded in. some entities can have special priority to always remain loaded regardless of olimar's camera and distance.
Funnily when I first played Pikmin 1 I never encountered Puffmin as Puffstool never did their…well “Puff Smoke attack” attack when I first fought her so it was funny to watch someone else get attacked by them for the First Time
I'm pretty sure enemies, treasures, etc dont despawn since of something in the code, but pikmin do for some reason, and since puffmin are considered enemies (since they're normally hostile) they wont despawn.
I feel like one of the most annoying things would have to be random puffmin deciding to cut the grass, turning themselves back to pikmin. Fucking hate the grass in 1

I’m not 100% sure but I think that the puffmin don’t work when their off camera since they are considered enemies so they don’t have the same function of staying functional even when unloaded like normal Pikmin.
bro says you can beat the game with *only* puffmin after literally using *normal* pikmin to help in some parts
actually, mushroom pikmin count less as a type and more as a status effect, akin to being lit on fire
With all this brainwashing I'm pretty sure the Pikmin are having an identity crisis! 🤣
this could've been a good Halloween special
I really liked this video. I've been watching your videos for some time now and really liked the series and am glad you continued it. Anyways, I really like your videos.😊
THIS MAN HAS A CHILD I HEARD IT
The Council is pleased with this one, Press A. You are lifted from the punishment to be sent to you for your prior crimes against Pikmanity.
Yay! Suffering!
:o (Edit, they looked like the Pikmin version they was before they was a Puffmin, but in idle)
Edit edit: I am not sure anymore how this process was, but maybe i will try this in the future again)
My immediate thought in response to this title: Sir, are you insane? You JUST did red only-
*gets my ass kicked*
Finally, a task checked off my to-do list!
I can’t wait for puffmin 2!
Wait there’s no puffstool-
I don't know, if this will be interesting or possible, but how about a sorta "enemy-nuzlocke"?
If you defeat an enemy-species once, you aren't allowed to beat it a second time. Making you decide, when to kill a bulborb, when to ignore it or when to distract it.
press a does the impossible not matter what
No way! I had no idea you could control puffmin! I will try this glich if I play Pikmin again
My cat was screaming at the EXACT same time yours was at around 24:20, I thought I was having a stroke hearing double for a second 😂
Excellent video as always!
Even more pain than Reds Only.
Maybe the fire geysers need to be off when they are off camera ? Maybe it doesn't change "states" if you can't see them. Idk, it's just a theory
Puffmins under Olimar's control are like gliched invinsible pikmin in pikmin 3
39:11 *video stops as a low quality image of luffy slowly fades in
its 5am and i had 0 sleep
W sample coming in clutch
I didn't even know about pikmin and now I am binging all of the challenge videos
Sadly Nintendo didn't bring back puffmin in later games 😞
That’s a good thing
@@Themacattack1209how?!
Closest you'll get is the pikmin on *drugs*
17:10 @PressA the only thing that makes sense to me is that the geysers are on a global timer while the enemies are not. A global timer would help them stay in sync so it would make sense for them to implement that into the game. This is how it works in Mario Maker 2 with the fire bars :)
It's a shame puffin weren't brought back in 4 :,(
Eh I’m not a fan of them. Besides, creating new models and animations for all Pikmin types would be unnecessary for such a small part of it.
@@Themacattack1209you'd only need 5 new models, and you could reuse the animations from the normal pikmin. 1 model also would've worked fine, since all puffmin in 1 use the same model
What’s so special about Puffmin again?
@@gboogie3257 they're the only enemy pikmin in the entire franchise (not including battle mode in 2 and 3)
@@TruGamer1127 so?
Assuming you mod it so each pikmin has infinite carring capacity, I wonder if it's possible to beat the game with one pikmin
Probably not 100 percent because emperor bulblax has a BEEG health pool so it would be hard to take it down.
14:18 why would having more blue pikmin specifically do anything when in the end they will all be turned too puffmin?
Continue watching the video.
Kinda funny to think the one pikmin type that's the most useless also makes you pull out your dandori skills more
Inventions come from laziness
@@Yababaina_hands_or_orb_hands that is fact
17:27 it might be because those fire geysers are always/every other frame loaded in. some entities can have special priority to always remain loaded regardless of olimar's camera and distance.
15:26 cat
Funnily when I first played Pikmin 1 I never encountered Puffmin as Puffstool never did their…well “Puff Smoke attack” attack when I first fought her so it was funny to watch someone else get attacked by them for the First Time
I ❤ Puffmin!
"No you cant- wait....WHY IS THIS VIDEO SO LONG????"
Fucking hate the grass in 1
Puffmin is just a state that pikmin can be. Kind of like burning pikmin. Puffmin still have obillity of the original pikmin.
This would’ve taken me an entire school year to attempt
Me who gets the the spring the regular intended way... as well as every other part.
