- Hindu Seemantham (South India)
Region: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala
Rituals: Seemantham is celebrated during the 7th or 9th month of pregnancy. The main ritual involves parting the mother's hair while chanting Vedic mantras. The ceremony includes bangle rituals ("Valaikappu"), where the expectant mother is adorned with glass bangles. This is followed by a feast, with prayers for the baby’s healthy development.
Focus: Spiritual well-being, protection, and blessings for the baby’s intellectual growth.
2. Hindu Godh Bharai (North India)
Region: Northern and Western India
Rituals: Known as Godh Bharai in the north, this is usually done in the 7th month. The expectant mother’s lap is filled with gifts, fruits, and sweets by family members. Women sing folk songs and bless the mother with good wishes for a safe delivery. Friends and relatives also give clothes and gifts for the baby.
Focus: Welcoming the baby, celebrating fertility, and ensuring the mother is pampered and nourished.
Sikh Tradition (Rakhri Ceremony)
Region: Punjab
Rituals: Among Sikhs, the Rakhri ceremony is performed in the 7th month. The expectant mother is blessed by elders, and prayers from the Guru Granth Sahib are recited for her safe delivery. Gifts and sweets are offered. Sometimes a special Ardas (prayer) is performed in a Gurdwara to seek blessings for both mother and child.
Focus: Community prayers, spiritual protection, and familial blessings.
