  • Step by step video on how to make an epoxy resin table mold. Learn how to make a form for your DIY epoxy table and not have to worry about leaks. If you don't know, anyone who works with epoxy long enough will spring a leak in their mold. And since the epoxy takes days to cure, you can potentially leak hundreds of dollars of epoxy on your garage floor. One drop at a time.

Stephen of The Palazzi’s Custom Creations here- my question is this: does the Alex caulk alleviate any and all leaks and what do you do in the even of a leak springing to save the project from disaster. This is my main fear of building bigger forms. I’ve been using a mold from crafted elements for my charcuterie boards but I’m ready to move on to bigger projects 😊

Johnny here. I've used mold release on a test epoxy mold but the melamine stuck to the epoxy in multiple areas. I noticed that you spray on the mold release then used what appears to be a paper towel to buff in or wipe in the mold release. Is using the paper towel the secret?

I have an extensive question/conundrum with a project.
I’m a Firefighter and my crew and I are building a firehouse dinner table. We are well into it and I have just found your RUclips channel. I wish I had found you two months ago...
I am realizing that we have made quite a few mistakes/things we should have done... oh well at this point. I was hoping for some advice on how to proceed since we have significant time and money involved as well as our names/reputations on this table that will long outlast our careers.
We built a metal frame for the table and dropped it into the frame before we did the epoxy. I see we have done the exact opposite of what you have done with the way you build yours... 🤦🏻‍♂️ We did hand painted, hand turned gold leaf graphics for a custom emblem on top. We are at the point of pouring a final pour to cover the gold leaf artwork but was not sure how to proceed with getting the final edge around the table. I know we have done things not the way you do or would recommend but at this point I was hoping for out of the box thinking on how to make this look as good as possible and to hopefully save the project.

I've been watching your videos for months now and appreciate your helpful tips and tricks. I was wondering if you have built your own HDPE moulds from HDPE 4x8 sheets? I'm considering doing that because the molds last longer and can be used multiple times. I know you mentioned not building the same size often enough and I can understand that but do you have a size that you find being built more often than other sizes? Could that be one you would make a stronger longer lasting mold for?

I absolutely love this channel. I've heard you say about talking but realized we like hearing the narration. What you do is art and to have someone who can tell us his process and what your thinking was, one takes balls bc I know for me I've never liked hearing my own voice bc I am not used to it. You've created a channel from the ground up and I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to begin as you once did. That said wanting to and actually doing it is a big difference. The tools alone are so expensive, but everyone has to start somewhere. Thank you for sharing your art with us. I like how honest you are, it builds trust with the viewers. You aren't afraid to make fun of yourself especially when lifting stuff. I believe you said this, but you had no experience with tables or woodworking, epoxy etc? Or had you had some experience? When you first started your RUclips channel was there ever a time you thought in the very beginning you weren't gonna get enough views and doubted yourself? Having the space to work plus the tools are so expensive but everyone has to start somewhere. Thank you for sharing what you do. Screw the trolls, I give anyone credit who has the balls to come on RUclips take a chance and believe in themselves. Some people give up the minute they hear some mean people out there not understanding how hard it is to put yourself out there like you've done. Thank you for sharing what you do.

Hey there So just wanted to give readers/watchers a heads up. As a certified associate at Home Depot to cut on the panel saw, these cuts are not guaranteed an exact measurement. They are meant to only be rough cuts. Associates do try their best, especially when people approach them with respect. There's a lot of people out there that abuse Home Depot associates. It's not nice. As my grandma always used to say, "Honey attracts flies much better than vinegar.. I used to tell Grandma I didn't want flies!🤣 But hopefully you get the point. Be nice to the associates, they are often pulled in multiple directions from customers, they don't always have the training for something you need help on, and I don't know about all stores; however, every HD associate I ever met has been a pretty good person. Just take time to ask them how they're doing and if they're already helping somebody else, before you start trying to get an answer for something you're there for.

When you pour our epoxy, are you covering the wood, as well as the voids, with the epoxy and if so, does that epoxy on top of the wood get planed off. It boils down to, when you are putting the finish on your table (Rubio?) is that product putting a finish on the epoxy, or the wood or both? Thank you in advance. Gary

What temperature would you recommend to a pour in? What would be to cold to be more specific? I'm in pretty cold upstate NY and although I can and do heat my garage I usually don't heat it for several days. My wood boiler that is out there tends to keep the garage around 50*-60*. Just not sure if this would be to cold for the epoxy to cure properly, etc.. Thx in advance.

Something tells me I'm going to do a headpalm here, but I have a small desk that is going to be 41.5" w by 22" d This would seem to be making the bottom of the form 43.5 + .75+.75 by 24+.75+.75. This leads to a 45" by 25.5" base. If I attach the sides at the edges of the base, as in the video, won't the form be 2 inches too big? I'm sure I'm being a dummy, but that's one of my core competencies... 8^)

Thanks for all the amazing content! I followed your videos and successfully pulled off a pretty amazing tigerwood dining table, but now I’m onto my epoxy river pour walnut desk and I have a question about the mold..
You recommend adding 2” to each dimension for the interior of the mold… now what? There’s either a 1” gap around the wood, or if I push the wood to the edges then there’s a larger gap in the middle than intended. Either way it seems like wasted epoxy and $$. My mold is built but I haven’t poured the epoxy yet.
2nd question: What do you do to get all of the excess epoxy off of the sides? I think I’ve only ever seen you run it through that wide belt sander, but never the equivalent task on the sides.
    Thanks!

Love you video. Just finished making a mold with wood and lined it with mat tape and caulking. Super nervous for the poor. It’s for my friends coffee table 58” x 30. 2.5 inch thick. First time doing a piece this big. Suggestions on the mold?

Where do you find the wood insert like you have here to complete resin tables like these? 🤔
I doubt places like Lowes/Home Depot/Menards have epic wood slabs at their stores like the one you've got here. May we have some ideas?
I'm in Illinois - not sure if that may help or not.
What was definitely insightful was seeing the process of your making this and how much epoxy resin is needed for just this size of table... let alone an eye opener too! 😮😅

Jon here. Thank you for your videos. I am about to start my 1st ever expoy pour. Wanting to male a dining room table. I am using Western Red Cedar, 2 inch thick. Thinking about a finish size of 96x42 inches. Thinking of a river style since I have 2 sister slabs. What colors would you suggest with the cedar and would you go thicker on the finish coat to seal it for food use?

First off, great video! My question is, you added 0.75x2 on both the length and width walls. Since two of the sides are going to be placed inside the other, is it necessary to account for the 0.75x2 on all 4 walls, I thought just 2 of walls should account for this increase. Thanks

@Cam Great video mate! Just curious as to how much alcohol ink I should use to get the darkest black possible? Is there a rule of thumb that I can follow per the amount of ML/L of epoxy resin used? How much would say 50ml of Jet black alcohol ink get me if I want a super dark black resin? Cheers!

Lorelie - I have worked with epoxy on a small scale for quite some time but not yet on a large project like that gorgeous table (and all of your work that I have watched thus far - btw that void- gorgeous). Anyway back to the question - why cant you like your frame with vapor barrier plastic sheet - I keep thinking epoxy doesn't stick to it so why wouldn't it work in lieu of the typical steps I see people taking when doing tables? I am sure there is a super smart answer but I can't come up with it and before I start my first large scale (for me) project I thought it best to ask the expert Thanks for your time and videos

At 6:50ish when explaining the sanding of the edges you mentioned a word I'm not familiar with. Also I have never made one of these beautiful tables but I have researched in depth before I decide to stick my toes in the water so to speak. Could you please get back with me on the word you used and it's meaning Thank you so much for this wonderful video. It was not boring, drawn out, and didn't skip anything. I really appreciate that. I'm going to get my husband to build me a mold. Well one day lol

Morning! I've just started doing these projects as I have time on my hands and don't do well sitting idol. I did make a small epoxy charcuterie board as an initial project to see how everything worked. I'm quite happy but had two air bubbles on each side where the live edge must of released air bubbles during the curing process. What epoxy do you use to seal the islands of wood and live edges to prevent this? Thanks for your time.

Zona, I stumbled across one of your other videos earlier today and to be honest I don't usually watch the whole video but kinda skip through them. Your videos though! I completely watched it and I subscribed. I've wanted to do a resin table for awhile now, but I am teaching myself all the things I need to know. I'm starting with learning resin and little things, making tons of mistakes, learning along the way. Your videos are entertaining to me, but no nonsense too, and I really appreciate it. (I am looking forward to your 3 hour video of making a table from start to finish!)

Home Depot no longer will cut melamine boards (at least the one in San Jose won’t). I cut it outside the store with a portable circular saw, making sure I’d brought lengths of 2x4 to raise it above the ground.

In the video you say you like to add 1-2 inches per side to allow for cutdown but in the video it looks like the slab is snug up against the walls of your mold all the way around. Do you also try and have a tight fit between the slab and mold wall or is it better to have an inch or so of epoxy all the way around and then cut it down? Sorry if that wasn’t super clear.

I am looking at planning a Table with drink coasters, it will be fairly large, we have about 200 coasters but may have to cull the worst of them.
    Questions i have
Do you have to treat the drink coasters before you put them in the resin?
Would you do a double pour, by that i mean, pour some put the coasters in then pour more over the top or is it best to have a timber base attach the coasters then do a resin pour over that?
    Thanks
