  • In this video I will show you the types of house plans available, prefabricated houses, and kit houses Customers could buy from Sears, Roebuck & Co. back in 1921. These cute little houses used to adorn almost every town in America...they were inexpensive, and relatively easy to build as most came available in preassembled kit form. If you can think of anybody who might appreciate this type of content, please consider sharing my video with them.

    Classic homes seen all around Washington D.C. even today. I love the simplicity of the designs and the custom touches like built in and hidden cupboards for keeping household cleaning supplies in reac but not in sight. Mops on the exterior walluiu

    Very cool! I still can't figure out if my 1919 Craftsman is a kit home.

      Have you checked your city (or county) historical records? They might have a set of the plans for your house, that had to be approved for the house to be built. And, if they don't, at least you'll know that answer. Another idea, might be to check your attic or crawlspace, and look around with a good flashlight, for anything that might resemble "part numbers". And I guess, lastly, (that I can think of right now...) Take a few photographs on your phone of any existing, possibly original, door knobs, wood trim around windows and doors, etc. Then, see if you can find any of those same elements in research material. Might not give you a immediate answer, but perhaps a clue leading to another clue. Knowing the date of the home might help you zero in. Well, that's all I got for you. Good luck! Report back if it is confirmed. That would be pretty cool! All the best.

    I grew up in the “crescent “ model in Chicago’s Beverly area. Built in 1926.

    I own one of the hundred or so SEARS Vallonia's that was built in 1927 in Hyattsville Md. Most all are still standing and are on the Historic House Tours every year. We bought it off of the daughter of the original owners in 1996 who was raised here with her 6 siblings with only three bedrooms and one bath.

      That's cool! How are all the joints and seams holding up? Any issues with settling?

      @@KeithElliott We've had costly foundation wall repairs. But, I attribute that to the gravel driveway that is 2 feet from wall. These homes are only about 15 feet apart and were never meant to have cars driving between them. She's still tight other than very squeaky original wood floors.

      @@christophercaprio4983 Ahh, yeah I've heard of similar issues that's why I asked. Glad to hear you reinvested in the home and had the necessary repairs done. Should last many more generations.

    I live in Seattle now and found a book from a company in Seattle that did the same thing. The reason it may have been useful here is there were not a lot of roads yet and in the early days, mail was brought by boat to everyone. So the easiest way to build a house would be to box it up and put it on a boat to deliver to buyers Entire neighborhoods that were built by "kit" companies are always a treat to find. Thanks for taking the time to make this, a trill to see.

      Hi Sue, I have a few more kit home catalog videos on my channel...your home might be in one of them. Sears offered many different styles and floorplans.
      Also, perhaps out of curiosity, I made another which had just the building components in it. Check specifically that one to see if any of the interior trim, doors, fixtures, or bathroom items match.
      Thank you for the very nice compliment!

    $3,265 in 1921 is the equivalent, adjusted for inflation, to $51,625.00

    Cool I was wondering can't you order a Sears catalog build kit book right and still get a house built such as one of those from the catalog

    • @KeithElliott
      @KeithElliott  3 года назад +1

      Hi Paula, there are a few ways you could probably go about building one; 1) Locate and purchase the plans (perhaps, somewhere online). 2) Screenshot the image of the home you want built, and give that to a local architect and have him/her draw up the plans. 3) If you have a Sears home in your area, or maybe in another town that you really like, you might be able to contact someone in the records department, and see if they have a copy of the builder plans for that address. There may be other ways too, however this is all I can provide you right now. Best of luck if you decide to build one! I think it's very exciting and would be a great project!

    Lovely bit of nostalgia. But I prefer Federal or Georgian-style homes. Some of these homes unfortunately were torn down if built too close to the city center, if the city needed the land. Others remained and the city built around them. I wonder if there were any subdivisions of Sears homes, like Leavitt town?

    All the documents are terrific but I don't understand the point to the birds chirping, lovely as they are, but zero narration. If you could walk us through what we're looking at that would be a vast improvement.
