  • For many of you, it's quite cold this time of year. Let's keep our reefs safe and at the right temperature.

Good video!! I was planning on buying my very first soft corals for my tank. It's recently new been up for 7 months. I would watch my anemones and they will let you know when something is wrong, they are very picky. I usually ran my temp at 74 deg and my salinity at .023. The person who I was going to buy my first pack suggested I up my temp to 78 and the salinity to at least .025/.026. So slowly I have been working with my heater and UV light I finally got to temperature to hit 77.5 24/7. I'm slow raising the salinity as well.

A seney reef will track the temp as well. Budget friendly dosnt control but also is a par meter and provides notification.

Speaking as a Hobbyist: That is a very cool frag rack...
Speaking as a Conservationist: On the whole One-degree rise on annual surface temperatures, thing:
It’s not only in Celsius, it’s also an annual average temperature. The word “average” seems to be lost on people…
Weather as a whole is becoming less predictable and more erratic. We all get wilder storms, more extreme droughts, more severe winter storms, more dangerous heat waves, and crazy temperature swings. Summer and winter can be equally extreme. Scientists then parses all that “Weather” data and average it to track changes to “Climate”. And our Climate is experiencing a slow rise in annual averages, all things considered. It was one of the first trends noted, that’s why the term “global warming” came first. Even though Climate change is a more appropriate term.
But as far as Corals are concerned: It’s not the annual temperate that concerns us. Rather, most die-off’s occur during the warm season, usually during a heat wave on top of already higher than average temperatures. If you throw out the “average” and look at summer temperatures specifically, it spikes far more than 1C.
Take the Great Barrier Reef as a specific example. It’s normal average winter temperature (July) is 70-72F. It’s normal average summer temperature (February) is 84-86 F. That can vary depending on depth or local weather. But that is the very deference between “climate” and “weather”.
For the 2016 and 2017 bleaching events. They occurred after several months of higher-than-average summer temperatures, and then were hit with a heat wave. They didn’t have a 1 C rise in February, they had a 2-3+ C rise…
The frequency and severity of those summer heat waves is becoming more prevalent and regular, as the overall global temperate "average" climbs. 2020 was the warmest summer the Great Barrier Reef experience since humans started keep weather logs in the 19th century.
2016 saw a 30% loss in Coral, 2017 followed with another 20% loss. That’s a 50% loss of coral species in an area the size of the Appalachian Mountain range. Just imagine if the US lost half the trees between Maine and Virginia over two years… That’s the scale of loss from were discussing.
All due to higher temperatures and ocean acidification. Both stemming from an increase concentration of Carbon in our atmosphere.

I'm currently using the Hydros Controller for remote notification and the Innovative Marine Helios dual heater system. I have been very pleased with this combination.

I actually live 10 minutes from Coral Vue who designs and sells Hydros. How do you like it? I am looking for something that only monitors my tank so i can see that everything is good while at work or vacation. What sensors do you use? Temperature and ph?

Speaking of thermometers and temperatures, I have a JBJ mercury thermometer in tank and it reads 77 ish.
Now when I test my salinity with Milwalkee digital refractometer it reads
71.4 degrees.🤔 It's a big difference but the temperature with the in the tank thermometer is always stable so I am hoping the in tank thermometer is right and my fish are not freezing.😳

The Milwaukee might need more time in the sample hopefully? I like to use the glass thermometers (at your LFS or Petco) that cost about $6 to compare when I have doubts.

Great subject but I disagree. I surfed for 18 years and there are always cool currents coming through that last for over 6 hours. Also people up north keep their tanks cooler. In the south we keep it warmer because going from 76 to 84 is alot worse than going from 80 to 84 in the event of an issue.

nice to see you back. was fine with beard though.. my Q is why a water change is necassary when Chemi Clean/ Cyano rx is taken out by Fresh Carbon and Skimmer next day. I havnt Changed big water changes but all to replace whats taken out by Skimmer Cup drain connected to a Bucket with Pipe. (may be few gallons or half a bucket). I Dosed twice the Dose and kept for 5 to 7 days running without Skimmer Cup. Everything remained Fine. and its thrice i did in last 2 years. Any Comment oter then specified instructions by Chemi Clean/ Cyano Rx.

The water change is very important. Only once I neglected to do one after treatment and it took months for the tank to clean up.

I didn't hear anything about "accuracy" in this discussion. I've used several devices to measure the temp in my tank, and I often get different results. For example, I bought a 3 pack of those cheap digital thermometers off amazon. One said 75, one said 77 and one said 79. I checked with one of those laser thermometers and it said 76.5, one designed for cooking said 78, and finally I used a probe connected to a Raspberry Pi and it read 77.5. Finally, I gave up on accuracy and just went with the probe based solution because it would allow me to measure throughout the day and see trends.
But, I still don't know what my actual temperature tank is. I can give you all sorts of stats based on the data log, but the entire curve could be +/- 2-3 degrees fahrenheit up or down. Any suggestions for ensuring an accurate measurement? Or does it really matter within that range?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  2 года назад

Consistency is key. If your probe-based (my preference) is reporting 77.5°F, that's likely good enough to see if the temperatures trend around the same point, or vary greatly. In the restaurant industry, you calibrate a thermometer to 32°F using a slurry of icewater, but our temperature probes aren't designed for that. Perhaps if you used a cooking thermometer, you could establish the temperature of a glass of water, and then put the aquarium probe in it to see if they concur.
