Next time do the ANC comparison without music. Once the music is on, any of these top tier ANC headphones sounds the same in terms of ANC.
Pretty that's not how it works
Untrue
I bought a xm5 set yesterday and after updating all the firmware (which was obnoxious; the app kept crashing on me), I find them... ok. I didn't get them for music, I bought them because I live in an apartment next to very noisy neighbors and sometimes I just need some peace and quiet. I have a XM3 set at work and it's just as good if not better than these at noise cancellation. Considering the absurd price and the hype for the XM5, I expected better.
Holy moly am I impressed by the level of professional testing here. The info from this channel is gold for any shoppers.
Literally, after watching this video, I was deciding whether or not to buy it
Thank you, I was looking for a headphone with good noise cancellation and your tests helped me somewhat.
Hello! I bought these very expensive headphones based on a lot of reviews but mostly because of this video. The screaming pretty much gone after switching the ANC on, the subway incoming, the office noise gone. That is not my experience at all! The noise cancelling does not do pretty much nothing. Right now I have a bucket filling with water around 10 meters away and I can still hear it perfectly. I am so beyond disappointed.
Exactly the same here. All of these “professional” reviewers are either frauds or just plain incompetent. What you are experiencing is the “auto NC” of the headphones - it decides for you how much ANC you get based on how loud it is outside. I sit in an office and can hear conversations 20m away from me. I’m also VERY disappointed. The XM3s I had were better :’-(
@@HikarusVibrator agreed! I'm guessing all these reviewers giving good reviews are being paid by Sony.
I’m experiencing the same. What could be done to make NC more effective
@sumanin Make it more tight, but that would not be as comfortable as now.
Do you guys rather suggest getting the xm4's?
The first day I ever used my XM5s the noise cancellation made me speechless, I could not even hear a vacuum cleaner in the same room as me nor could I hear my significant other watching TikToks right beside me... a few days later I put them on again and the noise cancelation barely felt like it was there. I do not know what happened or why. I have been trying to look it up but have found nothing except some complaints about the optimizer. I don't know how it can be so good the first day and just never again after that. It makes me so sad because I was EXTREMELY impressed by them.
Same, I’m experiencing the same problem
Did you find any solution to the problem?
i am also having the same problem
@@zaywon I wonder if it is a problem with recently produced ones? When did you buy yours?

Thank you very much
I’ve got to be doing something wrong with my xm5s, I can still hear things outside my headphones, I can hear my finger snaps or etc, I thought it was automatic but how do you get the ANC to work?
Try downloading the Sony Headphones Connect app on your mobile device. You should be able to access all the ANC/Ambient Sound controls from there. Hope this helps!
I have also the same experience with my xm5 even after enabled Anc. I wear spectacles, I tried without wearing them , ANC perform better but I still hear the finger snaps ,fan sounds etc.,
Same to me as well!
@@powerfulkf2806 of course u still hear human’s voices and the sound when you snap your finger, that’s high frequency souds which can not be cancel by almost any heaphone even with anc
They are worse than the XM3s which I also had. In an office it feels like I barely have any ANC. Very disappointing.
No mention of the horrendous auto ANC that ruins the ANC for many users. These “professional” reviewers are simply blind to this issue. I can’t fathom this
Is the AUTO ANC OPTIMIZER A MESS? Is it good with the auto optimizer or does it ruin the ANC?
This is what I'm wondering too. I've heard loads of people on Reddit saying the auto ANC is a mess, and ruins the headphones. But then others saying it's the best ANC around??
Yeah I'm also trying to figure it out, I have a pair of them and it seems the ANC is adaptive.. it seems to not be that strong until it has a reason to be, like once it picks up a surplus of noise it will become stronger
@@DJRob10 thank you, is there a way to turn the auto optimizer off?
@@shauryaparasrampuria6217 I'm afraid there's not, which is why I hope this is something they fix soon. I think it would be ideal if the headphones went to max anc level when they detect constant higher levels of noise for about 5 seconds straight, then only lower back down to a lesser level when the detect lower levels of sound for 5 minutes straight
@@adamgreenhill110 I've had it for 3 days and I work in a loud environment. Gonna return them tomorrow, its actually awful.
I have the same but my noise canceling is just trash, i can hear everything
The XM5's active noise canceling is only for constant noises (airplane engine, car, subway and etc.) or it also works equally for variable noises (people talking in different voice tones randomly, ringing cell phone). In what sense does he perform better?
Oh wow AirpodsMax all the way. I was surprised the ANC was better than the XM5s
What ? I'm pretty sure the XM5 have better noise canceling than Airpods Max
@@jirou6228 xm5 is cancelling noise on its own wish, they are auto. APM or even in XM4 one can set ANC level to maximum. Definitely in different environment, xm5 gonna loose man!
@@amitabhshekhar2558yeah 100%. Unbelievably dumb “feature” and I’m astonished how these “professional” reviewers are so incompetent that they don’t notice
@@amitabhshekhar2558how can I turn this shit off? Put it on manual?
Yet another great review from your team and the comparison was spot on. Thanks for an amazing video
Spot-on what I wanted to know.,.
I appreciate the rigour of your testing but the music obscured the quality of the ANC. The music was also too loud after I had raised my volume to listen to the ANC-only sections.

I'm still on the XM3s. The sound and ANC were pretty equal on the XM5 and the Airpods Max. I think I'd get the new Sony headphones over the Apple headphones simply because of the price difference.
I'm still on the XM2s 😁 Haven't 'needed' to upgrade to date but the XM5s are really tempting me to give in to consumerism.
@@TinyShnutz I'd say do it, or get XM4's. Even the XM3's are a big step up from your XM2's! Basically, the XM3's onwards are all great
@@adamgreenhill110 are they good for gym use?
@@needsomewater Never used them at a gym, but they'll be bad if you're sweating. The cups get pretty warm, the drivers + fabric touch your ears. For gym I'd say maybe Bose QC45s? They have spacious earcups that don't touch your ears

I bought them yesterday on a black friday sale 330 euros. I can't wait to try them!

You should do a test where someone is just yelling at the wearer or having a loud argument near them.

Are the earcups too shallow? Causing the ears to touch the inner part of the earcups making it uncomfortable?
The ear cups of the Sony WH-1000XM5 are actually quite large and deep.

Amazing! Will be buying this for sure!
I need them for lawn cutting, will they block that out
how are they around power tools? especially loud things like band saw or table saw
Just got them and with ANC on I can still hear a sneeze from tne next room. Very disappointing as I love the multiport capabilities.

How would you guys say the XM5's sound quality rates against the B&O HX, B&W PX7 and Sennheiser Momentum 3?
whats with the statics while there is no music playing while ANC is ON?
What's with that annoying popping sound at 1:00 when ANC is turned on. Is that normal? If so, yikes...
Thanks for the test and comparison btw!
From my experience that could be from moisture getting trapped inside. I seen people put silica packets in theirs to get rid of it from happening.
How does the xm4 and xm5 stand up against a next door construction?
xm5 has an auto optimizer in the anc that will drive you nuts and can't be set to manual. Don't get it until there's an update for it that lets you choose your level of ANC manually.
@@Sapreme thanks for the headsup!
Hey man Did they finally fix it or noo?? PLease help me. i am looking to buy this one. @@Sapreme
@@Sapremehas such an update been released yet? If not should I rather get xm4's ?
Have you actually compared it since bose did software update. Here they give them real run for the money !
How come when I use the noise canceling and record, it still records all the background noise 😢
That's contet I needed
For someone who finds XM4's sound too boomy and muddy, Is XM5 any better?
I think slightly better..you can hear the comparison in ThisIsTechToday channel..
Based on our testing, yes! And you can find out more in our comparison article: www.soundguys.com/sony-wh-1000xm5-vs-sony-wh-1000xm4-71945/
@@SoundGuys Thanks. The frequency response graph comparison is really helpful. Interestingly XM4 has more highs, but also more midbass bleed which is not good.
This was my biggest complaint about my xm4's sound quality wize. Bass in xm4 is quite sloppy. Xm5's bass is much much cleaner. Didn't expect the sound to improve so drastically
Omg mute the children! Yes!
i more curious about what will break the anc
Great video!
Something is telling me these will be forbidden in many workplaces 😅
Great review, guys 👍
Edit: BTW, the 4th iteration sounds pretty superior to its successor.
After seeing this video I simply had to buy them
How are they wired for lossless music? Is there such a thing as noise cancelling and wired high res ?
Yes it is. I have had these XM5’s since July 2022, and I love them. I have Apple Music, and the lossless audio sounds incredible with wired connection. Give them a try.
And yes you can still have ANC and lossless audio wired.
1:30 what song is this?
Your microphone quality for the headset isn't good to be honest. Listening from my 1000xm4
Anyone know the name of the track that's being played over the headphones?
'We Will Never Die' by Par Hagstrom
This what i wanted, thanks
Hi,
First of all, sorry for the annoying question, but I've been looking for good open headphones for a while now.
Will use the headphones primarily for gaming. Mostly I play competitive games so locating footsteps is the most important thing.
Do you perhaps have a recommendation for me, I'm a bit overwhelmed with the selection.
(I don't need a headset and the price is okay up to 200€)
LG and thank you in advance
Perhaps you should keep an eye out for a sale or used set of Audeze Penrose. They are currently $300, but you might be able to find a deal.
I really like your measurements of ANC and isolation and I find the resulting graphs highly informative. But I didn’t find this video that informative.
As I read your graphs at you site, Apple actually performs better in the lower frequency range. While XM5 berforms better in the higher. So it would be very interesting to hear examples such as loud nearby bassy music, noisy office with loud conversations, Both with and without ANC for XM5, XM4, Bose and Apple - but without playing music.
Upto which point in DB this can cancel the sound..
In Random sounds situation like construction..
In repeated soud situation..
What you think of bass
The sound quality of the Sony WH-1000XM5 is certainly an improvement over its predecessor. You can check out our full review here: www.soundguys.com/sony-wh-1000xm5-review-71783/
Good job.. This I'm looking for
Loved the XM5 ANC quality!
Have you not had problems with the auto ANC?
Could you try to get the persistent rumble that occurs after a really high energy infrasonic noise occurs? (Hint, roll down a rear window in a car at highway speed. This triggers it every time in my experience. The annoying thing is that it does not go away without a full hardware reset.
That's basically just pushing them well beyond their limits, they're not magic
I am still on Marshall Major II bluetooth from 2018, still works like first day. love to get new headphone like this Sony which looks so awesome and great product but I don't know when. This major II seems like last forever
I'm looking for some earphones that won't make me regret the purchase. I am currently viewing the Huawei freebuds Pro, Xiaomi buds 3 and the 3T Pro version. Therefore I would like some advice from you
XM4 has a noticeable hiss compared to the XM5.
You shouldn't do these with music, especially because the crappy little microphones make you think the headphones sound crappy while playing music.
how tf does this have 7k bro went all in on this
music titles please 😁
what is the song title when you tested in the train station ?
how about compare to beoplay h95 for noise cancellation ?
For people who work in an open office environment are the xm4 enough for anc or is worth going for the xm5? Thanks
You will notice the difference of the XM5's improved ANC over that of the XM4. It's not a dramatic difference as the XM4 was already amazing, but it's quite noticeable in terms of reducing chatter, typical office noises from copy machines, shredders, phone calls etc. You won't hear yourself or anybody else typing. If you plan on making phone calls or video meetings, the XM5 is in a class of its own. It completely eliminates any background noise, something the XM4 or Bose's QC line can't do.
@@azuremain thank you so much for the detailed answer!:) ,😊😊
The XM5s SUUUUCK in the office due to the “auto NC” which decides that there isn’t enough noise in the office so it won’t turn the ANC up all the way. These reviewers suck too.
@@azuremainwhat are you on about. It reduces almost no “chatter” in an office. I have had the XM3/XM4 and they are better because they don’t have the idiotic “auto NC” that the XM5s have so ANC will never be on full blast in an office.
4:50 sony xm5
I'm born with a little autism and asberger and have ocd. I dislike labor workers being noisy so i rather listen to my own stuff. The worst is when they alwwys come without warning with a big smile on their face and troll neighbors. Especially weekends too. Those people are toxic in the eyes of autism spectrem people.
Yeah I feel you man. The XM5s don’t do the trick at all for me. I had the XM3s before and they were better. I’m super sensitive to noise - it’s a real part of my life, and I was very disappointed in the XM5s. Unfortunately I gave away my XM3s as soon as I bought the XM5s :’-(
The bose qc 45 are even better since the last firmware upgrade. Only few more from being perfect :-)
Did we listen to the same video? Or just watched...?
the biggest problem of sony xm5 is it auto switch of noise cancellation strength... it's extremely annoying and there's no way you can turn it off.
Will there be firmware upgrade to manually control them ?
@@prince_stark6501 i don't think so...
Hey man how is the auto switch noice cancellation strength problem now?? Did sony finally fix this issue??
@@ramprasath1552I'm also curious ?
Is it possible now?
I got both xm4 and xm5. Constantly comparing their ANCs while there's a loud TV in the next room and not listening to anything on the phones, I find that my xm4 have better ANC than my xm5. Bloody deja vu. I already experienced the same with Anker Soundcore Q20 vs Anker Soundcore Q30 (q20 had better ANC while being cheaper previous version). I paid 5-6 times more for SONY xm4 and xm5. They got better ANC than Ankers', but somehow xm4 ANC beats xm5 ANC in my experience. I'm not buying those overpriced Apple Airpods Max. I guess I'll wait for BOSE new ANC phones, perhaps they will be able to surprise me and finally block that annoying loud barking of the neighbour's german sheppard.
did you disable adaptive Noise Canceling ? in XM5
@@techbasics6142 Yes. Tried it with and without. My further weird experience: at higher levels of external noise xm5 is better, at medium and lower levels of outside noise xm4 still does a better job of cancelling that noise.

Absolute deal breaker. I had the XM3s and I used to blow people’s minds with them. Nothing about comfort. Is it comfortable to wear? Does it not pinch your ears? Does it press on the head? And so on. Robotic made for robots.
This wasn't a full review. Read the title maybe?
Hi there! The XM5s are quite comfortable to use. The relatively lighter design, coupled with soft, deep ear pads allow for extended use without any discomfort. Clamping force is also good and the headband doesn’t exert any excess pressure on your head. In fact, I’d personally put it on par with the Bose QC 35 II and 45.
